Saddle up for a wild ride through the Old West You’ll find a wide variety of western horror and dark fantasy in these pages. One story skirts modern times as it tries to deal with ghosts of the Civil War. Another has an African tie-in to an Arizona adventure. There’s a haunted mine, complete with a very unusual ghost hunter. There are plenty of vampires. Need gunfights? We’ve got ’em, including Joel Jenkins’ popular Native American gunfighter, Lone Crow. Also featuring stories from Kenneth W. Cain, J. A. Campbell, Vivian Caethe, Sam Knight, Kit Volker, Jason Andrew, Dakota Brown and David Boop.
I liked it. A mixed batch of spooky haunting stories. Most in the old west. My favorite was, "Brown and the Lost Dutchman Mine". ya gotta love a ghost hunting dog. All were well written and detailed. thank you Mr. Riley and goodreads for the free book.
Purchased during a binge-reading phase of weird westerns, I found this collection to be moderately good. There were some creepy and well-written stories, notably the Lone Crow story from dependable Joel Jenkins (Blood for the Jaguar) and the rather atmospheric J.A. Campbell story narrated by a dog (?!) (Brown and the Lost Dutchman Mine). Rest of the stories were mostly ho-hum, devoid of charm or humour, and following their own formula. Good time-pass. Nothing more.
This is what's known as a weird western--combining the horror and western genres. These have become popular in recent years. A few things stand out in this one. The stories are on the long side, where a lot of these anthologies have rather short tales. And the cover is one of the best I've seen. Most horror covers are black--this one is bright red and absolutely awesome.
I won this novel in the First Reads giveaway! A modern story of the horrific Old West. I was completely enthralled to receive the novel and thoroughly enjoyed the story.
