Chef Angie Turner of The County Seat—Idaho’s finest farm-to-table restaurant—is preparing a private dinner in the mountains during ski season, but the trip’s about to go downhill . . .
It’s a rockin’ New Year for Angie and her crew as they cater a bash for a famous band—and as a bonus, they’ll get to stay at the singer’s Sun Valley house for a whole week once the party’s over. But there are hints of discord, and the event hits a sour note when one of the musicians is found with a drumstick in his chest.
Is this a case of creative differences turned lethal or is there another motive at play? Angie’s jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire as she and her fellow foodies try to solve the case before the killer comes out for an encore . . .

Have a Deadly New Year is the 4th book in the Farm-to-Fork Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon. It is more of a long short story or a novella, and it might not be the actual 4th book since it's intended to be a fun caper around the holidays this year before the next full-length mystery comes out in early 2020. I am psyched given Lynn Cahoon published the title of the upcoming release just this week! But let's focus on this one first...
The series takes place in Idaho. Angie runs a new restaurant that has taken off in the last year. She's shut down the place for the week between Christmas and New Years for a few parties and events that will bring in more income. One includes catering an event for her bestie's former college friends, who are in a rock band. During the event, one of the band members is bludgeoned to death. There are 4 to 5 suspects, and everything moves quickly since it's a short novella. In the end, the culprit confesses before Angie has a chance to decide whom she thinks is guilty.
When I first read the story, I hadn't realized it was intended to be an in-between novella... once I realized that, I was much happier with the product. As always, it's written well and full of great characters, dialog, and humor. I didn't expect the big reveal to happen as it did, and while it was a good one, I thought it was a little too quick and didn't pack as much of a punch as it could've. Still, the characters are incredibly well developed for less than a thousand Kindle lines (~75 pages). I loved visiting some of the restaurant's cooking staff, as their relationships are one of the best parts of this series.
It's served its purpose well... I can't wait to read the full-length novella coming out in 2020. Thanks for the opportunity to visit the characters again for a mini-mystery.
3,5 stars. Continuing my Project Learning English by myself. Scribd text + audio. My second cozy mystery book!

Have a Deadly New Year by Lynn Cahoon is a companion novella that goes along with the full length books in the cozy Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. This one is best read between books three and four however, as with the rest of the books in the series it does contain it’s own mystery and could be read and enjoyed as a standalone if choosing to do so.
In this series Angie Turner has moved back to her hometown in rural Idaho after her grandmother’s passing and opened up a new restaurant, the County Seat. Angie’s restaurant has really taken off in the small town offering fresh ingredients straight from the surrounding farms. Angie has also gotten pretty good at solving the murders that keep turning up in the area although she keeps hoping to be done with her crime solving.
I’ve followed this series from the beginning and really enjoy the characters and the mysteries they get involved in solving. With Have a Deadly New Year being novella length the story goes rather quickly of course but you still get that glimpse of the character development from the fuller novels along with a quick mystery with limited suspects to help move along at a faster pace making this a nice addition to the series while waiting for the next full novel.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
This new Farm-To-Fork novella is an exciting read. I love the comraderie of Angie Turner’s County Seat restaurant’s staff—What a great group of people to work with and to have your back in any type of crisis.
Catering an event for an old school friend of Felicia’s (Angie’s partner) on New Year’s in a private, secluded cabin; the County Seat gang is horrified when one of the guests is stabbed! Then, everyone realizes that they’re trapped in the cabin with a killer. Sticking together, Angie and her trusted crew make short work out of identifying the murderer amongst them. Great short story!

This is a short novella that gives readers a quick visit with Angie Turner and the rest of the characters from the Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. This was a quick, fun, enjoyable read. In my opinion, Ms. Cahoon writes terrific novellas for her series. She has created such wonderful characters that I enjoy any chance I get to visit with them. Angie and her employees are hired to cater an event for an old friend of Felicia's who also happens to be a famous rock star. Unfortunately, murder just seems to follow Angie. The characters in this story are all well rounded and diverse which adds to the enjoyment. Ms. Cahoon continues to develop and grow them even with the limited amount of space the novella provides. The mystery was well done. Given that there were not a lot of people around when the murder was committed, the small suspect pool does not detract from the readers attempt to guess the killer's identity and motive.
I enjoy all of Ms. Cahoon's cozy mystery series and will be back for more in this one. I voluntarily read a digital ARC provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through Netgalley.
Chef Angie Turner closes her restaurant, The County Seat, for a week to work a catering job for the New Year's holiday week where they are to cater a few meals for a band getting back together for a new tour. After the catering job, they have worked out a plan with one of the band members who is hosting the get together to stay in his home for a retreat. Felicia, who runs the front of the restaurant while Angie runs the kitchen, is friends with band member Cliff and worked out a deal with him. Sounds like a great plan until Dane, one of the band members, is found dying on the dining table the morning after the big dinner. Cliff and Dane had a big fight the night before so he is the main suspect but Angie, Felicia, and the restaurant staff work together to find out the truth after the Sheriff arrives and has to leave when a child goes missing. The weather doesn't cooperate as a snow storm hits the mountainous region of Idaho. The restaurant crew has to deal with some wacky self centered wealthy band members, girl friends, and managers. Short and twisty, Have a Deadly New Year has a great mystery to solve by the usual characters of the series. I received a complimentary ARC from Lyrical Underground and Kensington Books through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
A novella set in Idaho' Sun Valley at New Years. The Country Kitchen is catering a private party at a ski lodge in the Valley. All is fine until one of band members is found injured in the dinning . The sheriff is called and he oversees the victim taken the hospital. Before he can set up to find the prep, he receives word that a child is missing and they need to find her before snowstorm arrives. He leaves the ski lodge and Angie and Felicia are left in charge. As all are concerned about a killer in their most Angie begins to explore the situation. Will Angie find the killer before the sheriff returns? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.

”Have a Deadly New Year“ A novella from the Farm to Fork series by Lynn Cahoon, is a fast, enjoyable read.

There were plenty of suspects and plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. The book is engaging from start to finish, grabbing you from the very beginning.
I would recommend this novella to all my friends that enjoy cozy mysteries. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from Kensington Publishers and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This quick novella is perfect for an afternoon reading while the weather outside is frightful. Angie and the gang have closed the restaurant for a week to cater a private event for a famous band that is getting back together for an upcoming tour. The owner of the house, a college friend of Felicia, is throwing in a week at his house after the event. Angie and Felicia have planned a retreat, full of cooking and planning. Of course, whenever Angie is around, you know there is bound to be a murder. When one of the band members dies from a drumstick thrust into his chest, everyone is worried. Is there a murderer in their midst?
I enjoy this series and its characters. They are a close-knit group, who joke around with one another and the dialogue is well-written. I am still not sure about all of their backgrounds, but that is something else that keeps me interested. The mystery had a few red herrings, but it was quickly and easily solved. There was not a big reveal, but rather and confession during a questioning period. It was a well written story and there was a full story packed into those few pages. It definitely did its job of keeping me interested in this series while waiting for the next full length story to come out.
What could be better than ending the year with an exclusive catering gig and starting the new year off in a gorgeous mountain home in Sun Valley? Well, maybe not finding one of the guests dead at the dinner table, but that's the way the soufflé falls when you work with the County Seat gang! Once again they are on the hunt for the killer, but this time it is imperative that they find the killer quickly since they are most likely sleeping in the same house as they are all snowed in together. This series is a must read! Excellent characters that are well developed make you feel like you are visiting old friends rather than reading a story, you are living through it with them! I do recommend that you read the entire series as that will help you enjoy the stories more and get to know the characters more fully. I will warn you that you may find that you are hungry for the food as the descriptions of the events are not the only thing the author brings to life for you. If only the County Seat were a real restaurant, I'd definitely be making reservations!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corporation for a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.
In this Farm-to-Fork Novella, Lynn Cahoon has once again brought together our favourite characters from Angie Turner’s County Seat restaurant. When her business partner Felicia Williams accepts a catering job for an old friend – Cliff Henry – lead singer of the Postal Mutiny band, little do they know that they will be in for a New Year’s Eve that they will not soon forget.
Travelling with Angie and Felicia are Hope, Estebe, Matt and Angie’s dog Dom. The deal they made was to cater one dinner party and they could spend a week at Cliff’s luxurious home which they planned to use as a retreat to brainstorm ideas for the winter menu at the County Seat. Missing for the most part from this adventure is Ian McNeal, Angie’s boyfriend who stayed behind at the farmhouse to take care of Precious the goat and Mabel the black & white hen. Ian is the nephew of River Vista Sheriff Allen Brown who is well acquainted with Angie and her ability to attract murders.
When the dinner falls apart into a shouting match and everyone heads off to their rooms, little does the group realize that soon they will be investigating another murder. All the dinner guests have left except for Cliff, Bailey, Dane, Suzie, Steve, Carolyn and Robbie. Who gets killed and what is the motive? Could a tell-all book be at the heart of things? At one point the County Seat bunch wonder if they are stranded by a blizzard in a house with a serial killer.
A great end to this novella is Hope’s idea to do a Vision Board for the New Year, to illustrate their hopes and dreams for the coming year. Angie realizes that she already has everything she could ever hope for or dream of – “friends, family, career and a home.”
As a reader, another in the Farm-to-Fork series would be a wonderful addition to the New Year as well!
This is the first book I've read in this series. I enjoyed this just as much as the series I usually read -Tourist Trap Mysteries. While I didn't feel lost reading this, I would like to get more of the background on the characters. They mystery kept me guessing and I did like the main characters.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. I'll be looking for others in this series.
Have a Deadly New Year earn 5/5 Drum Solos...Easy Entertaining Fun!
Felicia contracted a well-paying catering gig for an old school chum and rock legend Cliff Henry with a bonus for The County Seat restaurant crew to have the run of his over-the-top Sun Valley residence an extra week for a business retreat and maybe some R&R, too. It also gives Felicia an opportunity to show off and prove “what an amazing woman she’d turned out to be.” Cliff Henry has gotten the band back together to celebrate their upcoming contract for a reunion, but everyone’s attitude make this gathering an “8” on the awkward meter. It rockets to a “10+” when one band member with whom Cliff has argued, is found stabbed with a drumstick. Worse, yet, there’s a storm delaying the police’s arrival trapping them in the house with a killer!
Drum roll, please! I highly recommend Lynn Cahoon’s new novella with a clever drama keeping me guessing with several viable suspects, and the connection with Felicia makes it personal. With several main characters having equal importance, it is understandable that Lynn used the third-person narrative. Although I miss the “I” insights, she did an excellent job with descriptive language, dialogue that illustrates well the tone and personalities, humor, and a realism to the reactions and investigative techniques that I enjoy. I like these shorter cozies, easy and to the point reads, but I found I missed some of the details, depth, and side story excursions, and the big, perilous reveal usually found in the full-length version was just a confession. Personally, I am a “spud,”, born in Idaho with immediate family connections to all things Boise, so those references are beyond enjoyable. Lynn Cahoon is a master at putting her characters into short holiday mysteries...so ring in the new year with her, Angie, Felicia, and The County Seat crew! Two bonuses are included: an easy-to-make appetizer recipe for NYE Sweet and Sour Chestnuts with a spiced up sauce, and a sneak peek of the full-length book four, “Deep Fried Revenge.” Oh, I’m hooked!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kensington. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
Have a Deadly New Year by Lynn Cahoon is the fourth A Farm-to-Fork Mystery. Angie Turners, chef and co-owner of County Seat, along with Felicia Williams and the rest of their staff are at Cliff Henry’s house in Sun Valley. Cliff is the lead singer of the newly reunited band, Postal Mutiny. County Seat has been hired to cater a party that evening, and they get the opportunity stay at the cabin until New Year’s Day. During this retreat, Angie wants them to work on new recipes for the upcoming season. Angie’s plans fly out the window when band member, Dane is found dead at the dining room table the next morning with a drumstick protruding from his chest. Sheriff Pearson suspects it is an accidental death from Dane overindulging in alcohol until the test results come in. Unfortunately, Angie and the gang are stuck at the house with a blizzard raging outside and a killer on the loose inside. The group from the County Seat attempt to identify the guilty party in between whipping up delectable meals. The mystery was simple with little investigation (seemed like Angie was avoiding it). The focus of the book was on food and not murder. Avid cozy mystery readers should have no problem pinpointing the guilty party before the first course is served. I suggest reading Who Moved My Goat Cheese? Before reading Have a Deadly New Year. As it is a novella, you do not get the opportunity to know the characters or their background. I found the story to be disappointing and not like Lynn Cahoon’s A Tourist Trap Mystery series. The characters felt flat and so did the story. I felt Have a Deadly New Year was a miss and not in tune with the other books in A Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. This will not keep me from reading the next A Farm-to-Fork Mystery this spring titled Deep Fried Revenge.
Have a Deadly New Year by Lynn Cahoon is the 3.5th book in the Farm to Fork Mystery series, and another great book. Angie Turner and her restaurant, The County Seat, staff are catering a dinner then spending the rest of the week having a retreat. The catering client is a famous rock star, who knows one of the staff. Unfortunately someone is murdered, and the house is snowed in. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I can not wait for the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. Thank you.

Review:
Any time I get to spend with Angie and her friends is time well spent. Her and her coworkers get along so well, they are like a family. When they get a job catering for a famous band, they think they are in for a real treat. They expect to have a great New Year. What they are really in for is a murder and mayhem. The characters are well developed and well rounded.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me right into the story. It was great that the murder took place on their working vacation, it added a new setting to the series. The mystery was well plotted and evenly paced, and not easily solved.
I would recommend this novella (and series) to all those who enjoy a well crafted cozy. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
A very enjoyable novella. Angie and her crew are catering a group and plan on a working retreat after they are through, however they are hindered by finding the body of a guest. Add a snowstorm which leaves them trapped with a killer which keeps everyone on edge. The mystery was good, with solid characters and the story wrapped up nicely. I will continue on with this series. There is the bonus of a yummy sounding recipe in the back.
Angie and her staff are excited to cater a sit down meal for a famous band and their people. The main band member has offered them up his house for a week after the party. Angie plans to spend that week working on new menu items, letting her crew have some relaxation time and enjoying the time off. Things are going well until right before dessert the band member get into an argument and everyone leaves, going their own way. Angie, excited about the out week is disheartened when one of her crew members finds a band member dead, a drumstick protruding from his chest. Who hates the man enough to kill him in such a way. Things aren't going the way Angie had hoped, they are stuck at the house with the band and their people while the police investigate. It doesn't help when the weather turns bad and the police aren't able to come to the house, who wants to be stranded in a house with a murderer. Angie keeps her crew together hoping to keep them safe until the police can find the killer. Will every one make it out safely or will the weather give the murderer a chance to kill again. This is a fun series with a great cast of characters and it always includes a fun mystery to follow and try to figure out!
I love this series so much and I am so sad that this book was really a novella - I wanted SO much more of Angie and her crew, but am happy we got this while we wait for the next book!!
This was an interesting story that shows what entitlement can do to you [though not everyone who is entitled ends up murdered] and how difficult, even when you are in the food business, to deal with them. I felt bad for Felicia as she is brought back to a world she had left behind and has to see what life might have been for her if she had done what her parent's dictated.
A quick read, I am looking forward to the next full-length book!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books/Lyrical Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
No one would wish their worst enemy to Have a Deadly New Year. However, for the employees of the Country Seat restaurant and the reunited members of a 1990s band, it looks to be a dangerous holiday season!
Angie and Felicia own a small farm-to-fork restaurant. Felicia has a college connection to the recently reunited band Postal Mutiny. When she works out a deal to cater one meal for the band at the remote ski vacation house of the lead singer in return for a week of free lodging, it sounds like a win-win. However, the band’s constant fighting results in one member being “drumsticked” in the chest. When the sheriff is called away to search for a missing child, Angie steps in to solve the crime.
Angie, Felicia, and the other restaurant folks in Have a Deadly New Year feel like long-lost friends already. This is the first book in this series that I’ve read but it won’t be my last. The characters act realistically and feel genuine. The mystery was good too. 4 stars for this engaging book.
One more thing. Just a call out to the dedication to band members everywhere—you were the first friends I had who practiced mindfulness before it was even named that. Thank you for all the great life lessons.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this short story. It was the perfect length. It's fast-paced and the crew is all there cooking up good food to a rock band reuniting at a retreat. Until something goes wrong and one of the band members is murdered with a drumstick. They sent to sleuthing since they're snowed in and just an the last minute are able to get a confession from the killer with nifty questioning. #HaveADeadlyNewYear #NetGalley
The County Line crew is catering a private party for a Rock Band. While Felicia grew up with the rocker who owns the house, Angie can’t bring herself to trust him or anyone in the party when another member of the band is murdered.
A short novella to tide me over until the next entry in the series. Always welcome when you’re stalking the author’s page to see when the next full length book is going to be released. Love all of Lynn Cahoon’s series, she is a talented writer.
In the manor of a Christie classic, this cozy has all of the who-done-it twists with a revealing ending.
Catering a dinner party for a rock star band seemed like a great way to earn a retreat week with the County Seat staff to create meal plans for Angie Turner & Felicia William's restaurant. At least it seemed good, until one of the rock stars dies of a stab wound to the chest. Locked into a cabin by a blizzard with a murderer has everyone looking over their shoulders until the police can get back there.
Interesting characters had me turning the pages until I finished it in a day.
The pacing of "Have a Deadly New Year” is perfect for a novella, maintaining a steady rhythm that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish without feeling rushed. And while the murder mystery is the central focus, the exploration of the characters' personal relationships adds depth and richness to the overall narrative. I only wished it was a little more festive.
