This particular nonfiction book is an informational nonfiction book. By combining a number of nonfiction text features, this book provides facts about different types of sharks, and their senses. One factor that makes this book interesting, is that the facts are presented in a narrative fashion. That being said, a fiction book that pairs well with this is a book called, Shawn Loves Sharks by Curtis Manley. Shawn Loves Sharks pairs well with Sharks Have Six Senses because both are written in a narrative fashion. So, students have the opportunity to make connections to the sharks in the fiction book, to the sharks in the nonfiction book. Both books are intended for primary grade levels due to the basic vocabulary and content displayed as well.
Sharks have six senses. The sixth sense makes them deadly hunters. This informational read tells about how sharks use all of there five senses, with their sixth sense to track down prey in the ocean. It is a bit wordy for its reading level but that is to be expected for something as informational as this. Shark lovers will definitely love this book.
This was a great book. I would have rated it highly except...it chose to state that sharks have evolved their senses over millions of years. Sorry, folks, but the age of the Earth is strictly a theory. Address it as such or LEAVE THAT OUT! Ugh.
Lots of different types of sharks are illustrated, including the bull shark, hammerhead shark, and thresher shark, but not with specific features. Providing illustrations could be helpful for some readers who feel too scared to see the authentic photographs of sharks. However, illustrations could not portray the details of the sharks’ features. Sharks Have Six Senses provides websites and a glossary for readers who would like to study sharks further.
