#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery writes heartwarming and humorous novels about the relationships that define women's lives—family, friendship, romance. She's best known for putting nuanced characters into emotionally complex, real-life situations with twists that surprise readers to laughter. Because Susan is passionate about animal welfare, pets play a big role in her books. Beloved by millions of readers worldwide, her books have been translated into 28 languages.
Critics have dubbed Mallery "the new queen of romantic fiction." (Walmart) Booklist says, "Romance novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and RT Book Reviews puts her "in a class by herself!" It's no wonder that her books have spent more than 200 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list.
Although Susan majored in Accounting, she never worked as an accountant because she was published straight out of college with two books the same month. Sixteen prolific years and seventy-four books later, she hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time with Accidentally Yours in 2008. She made many appearances in the Top 10 before (finally) hitting #1 in 2015 with Thrill Me, the twentieth book in her most popular series, the Fool's Gold romances, and the fourth of five books released that year.
Susan lives in Washington state with her husband, two ragdoll cats, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Her heart for animals has led Susan to become an active supporter of the Seattle Humane Society. Visit Susan online at www.SusanMallery.com.
Christmas in Whitehorn is a book by American author, Susan Mallery the 40th book of the Montana Mavericks series. When Darcy Montague, baker and diner waitress, invites her new neighbour, Mark Kincaid to a Thanksgiving dinner party, she doesn’t think he’ll come. Mark has returned to Whitehorn after some very stressful years as a New York cop, and he is not at all sure he wants anything to do with sweet, well-meaning Darcy and her healthy food options. Yet he accepts the invitation, and when unforeseen events reduce the party to dinner for two, their proximity leads to unexpected intimacy. But both Mark and Darcy have elements of their lives that they are reluctant to share. The stars of this romance are an appealing pair; the book also features characters and some intriguing happenings that lead into the subsequent books of the series. A sweet romance.
A heartfelt, small town Montana romance reissued on audio and number 45 in the author's Montana Mavericks series. It can definitely be read as a standalone and I really enjoyed this next door neighbors romance that has the local baker and the former city cop falling hard for one another over the holidays. It's spicy, has a bit of a mystery and great emotional depth too. Perfect for fans of Hallmark after dark stories with tons of heart. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
I read this book on my nook, and really enjoyed it. I liked the storyline concerning one of the main characters brother. There was a little bit of mystery in this book as well!
I didn't really like this one because I find one night stands, and friends with benefits arrangements to be really trashy, skeevy, and utterly unromantic. Actually they aren't even friends with benefits, it's more like benefits first then they grudgingly decide to be friends after a few fucks but he's not really keen to know anything about her. Oh be still my heart.
I don't understand why Mark is such a 'catch', as we are told repeatedly. He's got no friends and is estranged from his family, he lives in an empty house and eats trash off paper plates, he had the emotional maturity of a teenage boy and spends half the book ghosting the heroine because it's too much hassle to actually talk to her, he had so much baggage and hang-ups its crazy, he has a deep seated mistrust of women, and his 'love making' is of the 'quickie' variety that's all done in 15 minutes then he's gone bye. Again, of be still my heart. Mark is hands-down a massive loser. I do not see the appeal.
I can see why people like Susan Mallery, but at the same time this book had me struggling to see what all the fuss is when it comes to her books. Granted this is one of her earlier works and I'm sure she's grown as a writer, this book was just okay.
We're introduced to a mystery that never gets solved. I can't tell y'all how much that irked the hell out of me. This mystery played such a huge part in the MCs falling out that for it to not be more fleshed out in the plot, it really did a disservice to this story.
I didn't hate this book but I didn't love it. It was just ok. Again if the mystery would have been solved and had an actual ending, I think this could have been a really solid romantic suspense book. I'm interested in reading more Susan Mallery to hopefully find a book that lives up to the hype she gets as an author.
Mark Kincaid, NYC detective, has returned to Whithorn to heal from his past. He has no desire to even date let alone fall in love. But here he is!
This is very predictable and bit basic in my opinion. There are a lot of places that you can insert your eye roll. 🙄. But, it is festive and will get you in the holiday spirit! I just wish the characters had better communication skills!
This is narrated by Tanya Eby. She is one of my top 20 narrators. And to be honest, she is probably the reason I finished this book and didn’t DNF it.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Darcy started life as one of the wealthy people and ended up struggling at 25 to take care of her handicapped brother. Can not imagine where she found the strength to do all she does for him. Mark comes home to lick his wounds (both physical and emotional) only to be hounded by do good-er Darcy. Got a little mad at him for some of his thinking but in the end, it worked out. Hope they have a couple kids and Dirk (Darcy's brother) makes it on his own. Once again, I was not disappointed by Susan Mallery.
There was nothing wrong with the story as I enjoyed the book that follows neighbours Darcy and Mark's interactions, especially when she tries to improve his eating habits. However, it was formatted incorrectly so instead of the correct punctuation, there was strange text throughout the book that was most annoying. Although l removed it from my phone and downloaded it again as suggested, it didn't remove the problem. Surely these problems should be picked up prior to offering books for sale.
Sorry I usually love Susan Mallery books but did not even finish this one. Not sure what happened to the actual text but every couple of lines there were weird hieroglyphics instead of actual letters. The € and £ featured mostly along with brackets before and after. It was all the way through the book when i skipped chapters to look. Please can we have a normal version that we don’t have to work to interpret.
The book was okay until unprotected sex by the third chapter. It went downhill from there. I skipped to the last 2 chapters. Then you get a mystery that was not solved by the end of the book. I guess it will go the length of the series which I am not reading. Not for me. I want a book to end, not continue on. This was definitely not standalone.
I really liked this book but I'm only giving it four stars because it left you hanging. There is a mystery but it doesn't get solved. It's like they stopped in the middle of the story. It doesn't make sense.
Christmas in Whitehorn originally came out in 2001 and I was excited to dive into this story of the small towns detective and local baker. I love Christmas and holiday reads and this book was right up my alley.
I enjoyed the characters and their history that shaped who they were for each other and I loved all the festive feels that poured from the pages. I appreciated the importance of what the characters stood for but I wasn’t a fan of the lack of communication and the reasonings for it. It felt very juvenile and unnecessary in the end. There were also several moments that made the story feel too pushed which made it feel rather fake. In the end, those moments were tamed down a bit by the sweet story and holiday vibes.
I love Susan Mallery's books, but I could do without all the sex scenes. I mostly skip them but some times there is something important and I missed it.
3 1/2 stars. Good story about two people who find love when they least expect it. Their road to a happy ending has obstacles, but they are able to surmount them, although some are easier than others.
