Anne Rouen

Anne Rouen—the nom de plume of Lynn Newberry—is the award-winning author behind the successful historical fiction series, Master of Illusion and, more recently, a set of standalone contemporary historical fiction romance and suspense novels set in the Australian Outback.

Lynn is a retired Australian country woman, currently living in the north-west region of New South Wales. A graduate of the University of New England, she is a former teacher, dressage rider and cattle breeder. A life on the land, including eleven years in Outback Queensland, has mixed nicely with her penchant for writing romantic suspense in historical settings.

More recently, Lynn exchanged her farm for a delightful small acreage on the edge of a village, where she writes full time. As horses and writing are her greatest passions, Lynn now embraces an idyllic lifestyle, since she has time to delve into the historical research she so loves.

Writing as Anne Rouen, Lynn self-published her historical romance/mystery series Master of Illusion with great success, winning four literary awards across the entire set. Book I (Master of Illusion Bk I) and Book III (Angel of Song) achieved Silver (2014) and Bronze (2016) respectively in the Global Ebook Awards for Modern Historical Literature Fiction. Book IV (Guardian Angel), the final in the series, was awarded Silver (2018) in the same category and Bronze (2018) for the Global Ebook Awards Best Ebook Cover.

Lynn has seen continued success in the Global Ebook Awards with her Australian Outback romantic suspense novels. In 2022 Winter at Medora Downs achieved a Gold Medal for the Best Ebook Cover, Silver for Best Suspense Fiction and Bronze for Best Modern Historical Literature Fiction in a contemporary setting. Wild Kingdom scooped the pool in the 2023 Global Ebook Awards with four gold medals (Best Ebook Cover, Best Historical Literature Fiction—Contemporary, Best Romance Fiction Historical, Best Western Fiction) and the prestigious Dan Poynter Legacy Award for Best of Fiction. Again, in 2024, Secrets of the Rock followed in the footsteps of its predecessor Wild Kingdom and achieved the same four gold medals across the same categories.

Lynn also achieved a Highly Commended in the 2011 Rolf Boldrewood Literary Awards for her short story The Scent of a Criminal and a Commended in the 2018 Thunderbolt Prize for Crime Fiction for The Min Min Light.

Bush Angel is Anne Rouen's fourth Australian Outback Romantic Suspense novel. And like its predecessors, it doesn't disappoint.

Angela Owen is a young nurse from Tamworth. She's heading up to North Queensland around Cloncurry area to become a private nurse for the Brooke family on Wyrangi station. The Brooke's have experienced a lot of trauma. The owner, Drew, had a terrible horseriding accident and is now a paraplegic. The youngest daughter, Petrina, was born with mild spina bifida and is also a type 1 diabetic. On top of all this, the previous nurse was met with foul play and the previous housekeeper disappeared without a trace. But Angela doesn't know that last part, or she may have never agreed to the job!

It doesn't take long for the drama to affect Angela. On her way to the station, she comes across a motorbike accident. Being a nurse, she was the best type of person to be first on the scene, and she assisted the handsom victim and saved his life. She also fell for him on the spot. And he felt the same about her. It was a magical soul connection moment. She was his Angel.

Angela doesn't realise that this accident was all orchestrated to try and kill her in the same way in which the previous nurse was murdered. She eventually works it out, and the family give her the option to go, once she learns the truth of her situation. They desperately needed her so the manager, Sonia Brooke, kept the information about all the trouble on the station from Angela when she gave her the job. She later apologises, but the woman is absolutely desperate. In any case, because of this, the family go to extreme lengths to ensure that Angela doesn't succumb to the same fate as the previous nurse.

Angela decided to stay. Logically, she realised the murderer already knew who she was, so no matter where she went from here, she wasn't safe. Besides, it turns out the handsome gentleman she saved (John) works at Wyrangi, and when he comes back and surprises her, that really seals the deal.

Throughout the story, Angela experiences a lot of near misses as the family and staff of Wyrangi do anything to protect her. It feels like the clock is ticking and the inevitable will eventually befall her. But in the interim, she develops beautiful relationships with the family, particularly little Pet and Drew who come ahead in leaps and bounds with their health because of Angela's loving care. Also, because they all share an absolute adoration of horses, and that passion brings them all together.

Eventually, it all catches up with Angela. For the sake of spoilers, I wont reveal what happens. Needless to say, the suspense will keep you glued. As does the promise of love behind it all.

Again, 5 out of 5 for Anne Rouen. She is a genuine master at characterisation and clever suspensful storylines.

I am always excited to read a book where it takes place in a country that I have never been to. The story takes place in Australia where a nurse wants a change of scenery and pace and will be looking after a father and daughter. As she is getting closer to her destination, she happens upon an accident where a very good looking man is injured. When she finally arrives at her new employer’s home, she learns that there is a Nurse serial killer on the loose. I must say, I found this book in a lot of ways predictable and redundant as far as how the protagonist felt as being the target for the killer. I did like some of the characters specifically the housekeeper who is actually undercover. About three quarters in, I figured out who the killer was.
