Complex and twisty yet also easy to follow, Photograph was a palpably tense thriller that delivered in spades. Both fast-paced and well-plotted, the storyline within this starkly original premise served up a taut game of cat-and-mouse with a healthy dose of poignancy on the side. You see, in addition to the action-packed scenes, there was a found family element that made me smile with glee from the riveting start until the soul-satisfying conclusion despite the fact that it had a mildly open ending. A quick, easy read even with the serious themes, this 300 page read was everything I look for when awarding the full five-star rating. After all, there was even a compelling, root-for-able sleuth who occasionally broke the fourth wall while narrating, which is a trait I always adore in the books that I read.
All said and done, between the ratcheting sense of foreboding and the evocative prose, there wasn’t a thing not to love. Perfect for fans of Mary Kubica and Lisa Gardner, the domestic suspense that percolated in the background easily went toe-to-toe with the propulsive crime thriller core of the novel. I mean, there was even a series of jaw-dropping twists towards the end that had me holding on for dear life until I reached the last page. Did some of them require me to suspend my disbelief? Okay, perhaps just a bit… But in spite of that, I was happy to throw my doubts out the window and let the supernatural feel take over instead. Hypnotic, ingenious, and sharp, I’m now a brand-spanking-new fan of yours, Mr. Freeman, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Rating of 5 stars.

🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 Once again Brian Freeman delivers an incredibly twisted thriller that will have you guessing throughout.
Shannon Wells is a private investigator in Florida. Recently, a woman named Faith enlisted Shannon’s help to answer one question…who am I? Huh? How do you not know your own history? But ok, let’s see what skeletons Shannon can dig up. Short answer…none. That’s how many!
Now her daughter Kate is looking for answers too. She is asking what her mother was trying to uncover and why. Shannon is now diving down the rabbit hole once again. Will she find answers this time for Kate? Maybe a few answers about her own life along the way too.
Gripping and suspenseful, this book had me pointing my amateur detective’s finger at everyone! It was as though the author was leading me down a path and knew who I was going to suspect next. He would then instruct me why I had to cross them off my list. (So cruel!) I feel tutored in crime solving! Well played!.🙌🏼
And yet, by the end I still didn’t guess correctly, even though all the breadcrumbs (I mean hints) were there for me to discover🤦🏻♀️. But I do feel it improved my sleuthing skills and I’m ready for my next challenge!🕵🏼♀️
✍️ Brian Freeman ⏳ 320 pages 🗓️ October 7 2025 📈 4.5/5 👉 Thriller, crime fiction
Its official, Freeman is one of the top 3 Authors for me, The man can write!!!
A woman is dead and her daughter visits the PI her mother saw for answers!! When their lives seem to be coming for a collision; PI just might find that family she's always wanted. Then a photograph seems to spark the reason as to why woman may have been killed!
3.5-Stars - for "Photograph" by Brian Freeman "I (almost) Really Liked It!" NB: Edited to 'round down' to 3-Stars: 17 Dec 2025 The fact that I listened to 89% of this book across just two days means I cannot rate it at 3-Stars, because I think it was a better book than that. However, miserable Stars-rater that I am, I didn't want to award a full 4-Stars, so I chickened out on allowing the rounding-up rule do it for me!
Despite some of my "listening activity" comments to the contrary, the story did seem to become somewhat complicated in a "who's up whom and who's paying the rent?" fashion. It is fairly obvious that my enjoyment waned in proportion to the increases in 'twists' and 'turns' (including some 'supernatural' moments😳), and questionable implausibility throughout the last quarter of an otherwise enjoyable book.
I must add that the excellent narration by January LaVoy almost saved this book for me. LaVoy's vocal range and character interpretation are characteristics of her being one of the best female narrators of audiobooks.
Extracts from my Listening Activity: November 11, 2025 @ 29%: "Quite an interesting start to this Brian Freeman book, an author familiar to me via his Jonathan Stride novels. Looking forward to hearing more tonight!" November 12, 2025 @ 54%: "I am really enjoying this different, "sort-of-complicated-but-not", private investigator novel by Brian Freeman, expertly narrated by January LaVoy!" November 12, 2025 @ 89%: "Just an hour to go and as usual, I still haven't worked out who is the ultimate bad guy. Although few aha! moments have made my eyes roll, this is fiction, so the author can write whatever he likes! All quite enjoyable listening with the final hour to knock off tonight!" November 16, 2025 @ 99%: "Well, after some procrastination, the book is behind me and I am feeling somewhat ambivalent about my rating and review. Did I enjoy it?.. Yes, but with reservations. Mostly it was the "uncomplicated-complications", plus the "unsurprising-surprising 'reveals' " that I found annoying."
With a Goodreads rating like that…. I had to read it as soon as it arrived in the mail! In most cases, the numbers don’t lie.
Before I start, I thought I’d share that this is a thriller with supernatural elements. Those were elements that I hated together. Guess what… times have changed. I think fans of Simone St James will love this!
Shannon Wells is a private investigator after a tragic event changes her life forever. She specializes in cases with victims or women who have nowhere to go.
A year before, she is hired by a woman with an odd request…. Who am I really? Shannon will soon discover that she has no idea.
I was so gripped to this novel! A cold case investigation that becomes increasingly intricate and spirals down a rabbit hole. I really really enjoyed Shannon as a character and what a badass she was! Loved it and definitely recommend!!!
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Huge thanks to Blackstone Pub for my gorgeous gifted copy!
One photograph. That’s all it took to set into motion a series of twisting and turning events.
Shannon, a private investigator in Florida, has just discovered that one of her previous clients has been murdered. Asked to dig into it further by the woman’s daughter Shannon discovers this woman may not have been who she said she was. What appears to have been started with a photograph snowballs into a mystery from Florida all the way to Michigan. Some of the revelations hit closer to home than Shannon expected.
While this was 99% more of a crime mystery there was a hint of supernatural elements. The mix of the two genres were done, in my opinion, subtly and then how all the things tied together were done really well. Each time I thought I knew where the novel was going it took another turn and while not all of the revelations were super surprising there were some that were. This is one of those novels that relies heavily upon coincidences, some more plausible than the others. But all in all made for an intriguing read.
The definitely wasn’t the typical crime mystery and had some good twists and turns. I may have to check out some of the authors backlist.
This 2-star audiobook boasted a 5-star cover and narrator.
The book's "Find Out Who I Really Am" premise? This also earned all the stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
OUTLIER ALERT: Although the book's initial setup promised eerie tension and emotional depth, as the book progressed, the pacing dragged with a narrative padded with scenes that failed to move the plot forward.
I was not the right reader for this book. I am not a fan of books with paranormal elements.
Had I known about the book's paranormal elements, I never would have selected this book.
I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by January LaVoy.
As always, January LaVoy's performance was outstanding.
✨ Rating: 4 ⭐️ 🫧 Vibes: a haunting, slow-burn thriller 🎶 Song: bad dream - ruelle 📖 Favourite Quote: "I'm not one to believe the justice system always delivers justice." 📚 Would I recommend? yes! 💬 tldr thoughts: a great twisty read!
In the package: 📦 badass private investigator 📦 mysterious photograph 📦 converging storylines
Plot: Shannon Wells is a private investigator for women. When her client gets murdered, she is hired to help the daughter discover what happened to her mother. However, the only clue left behind is a photograph of a young girl outside a rundown motel. As Shannon begins to unravel the truth, she discovers long-buried secrets that tie the photo to a decades-old killing—and to the darkest corners of her own past.
Thoughts: This was a really well written psychological thriller! I am actually quite proud of myself to figuring out one of the twists because that very rarely happens 😅 The mystery was juicy and thrilling. Every chapter ended like, “Oh good, another secret so now I have to keep reading.” and I was side eyeing every single character. Obviously the person I least suspected was the culprit 🫣 The converging storylines between the murders from decades ago and the present murder was very well done. Someone has had a secret for decades and they've been working overtime to make sure nobody figures it out 👀 Shannon Wells deserves a vacation, a really good therapist, and maybe a hug from someone who isn’t hiding a felony.
Thank you Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC!
Wow…January Lavoy is the narrator and she is going to do an event on TalkShop.Live with him tonight Mon 8/11! Can’t wait and definitely do an encore on audio!
A new standalone from my favorite all-time author. What a great cover to complement the perfect title and intriguing plot. His books are timeless page turners for me. This book kept me guessing throughout and I was very happy with the ending. It’ll be interesting to see if this standalone continues into a sequel or blend with another one of this author’s series. Thank you to Netgalley, Edelweiss, and the publisher for the opportunity in exchange for an honest review
This was a fun one, kept me invested and occasionally flipping off characters haha 😄.
The narrator did a great job bringing everything to life and that extra something ✨️ ✨️ to the story.
The twisty threads that were spread out and eventually connected (some in unexpected but also not surprising ways.. to me at least) in a way that had me looking back on everything and wondering if it was all inevitable and if anything could have been changed if some events had gone slightly differently.
My heart ached for people and sad/angry at how/why lives were cut short.. and how close one character
Brian Freeman is one of my all-time favourite authors and his Jonathan Stride series is on my list of favourites. Photograph is one of his stand alone novels and it is both unique and thrilling. PI Shannon Wells, known for helping women due to the trauma she experienced in the past, is hired by a young woman wanting to uncover the truth about her mother who was recently murdered. Full of twists and turns and a intriguing touch of the supernatural, this novel is fast-paced, gripping and a great read! Author Brian Freeman has done it again!
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Another solid stand alone from Mr Freeman. An intriguing case is at the center of this body-littered mystery, and guessing correctly who the killer was - incredibly early in the reading..it ain't a hard one to figure out - didn't spoil the fun. At times it threatened to get pretty silly, but it always managed to snap back to solid ground. An entertaining read for sure!
The Photograph is my book of the year. The book I will tell everyone to read.
It's a complex story linking crimes decades apart.
I was invested every minute of reading this book. The writing was fantastic and the characters were so well developed.
One of the twists was a bit of a stretch, but also a bit magical and I absolutely loved it. The emotions in this book were palpable, I often found myself choked up, experiencing the loss and struggles of the characters.
This is an intensely gripping, mind-blowing mystery that spans decades. An old photograph sets in motion a series of events that take a private investigator (PI) from sunny Florida to rainy Michigan on the trail of a cold-case that has just become hot!
To say I couldn't put the book down is a gross understatement. I stayed up WAY too late to finish reading, because it was just that gripping. Moving at a pace that increasingly picks up speed, the twisty layers kept me guessing the majority of the time.
Told entirely from the perspective of Shannon Wells, the PI, she's compelling, empathetic and full of moxie. I paired the audiobook with my read and January LaVoy is a pure delight to listen to! Not only is her tone that of honey, she sounds like a full cast and masterfully performs the nuances of a vast range of emotions for each character.
While I was able to figure out a few reveals before they happened, others took me by surprise in the best way! Brian Freeman leans into the metaphysical with aspects such as possible reincarnation and visions that affect Shannon's decisions, which isn't for me. Though the majority of elements are logically sound, I prefer more pragmatic reasoning. However, all the puzzle pieces click into place with subtle clues along the way for a discerning reader to pick up on. I couldn't help but be fully engaged and invested the entire time!
This multi-layered plot will absolutely keep you on your toes and your mind spinning, all the way to the electric and emotional conclusion! If you enjoy tales that blur lines between the past and the present, this one's for you. PHOTOGRAPH is an intense ride full of twists, secrets, and hidden truths perfect for armchair detectives and amateur sleuths alike! ____
Thank you Blackstone Publishing and LibroFM for my gifted copies. All opinions are my own.
Shannon, a private investigator, has an odd request from Faith Selby: Find out who I am. When she turns up dead months later, Shannon delves deeper into the story and finds out a shocking connection to past and present murders.
I really liked Shannon, a character shaped by a tragic event that made her strong and fierce! The story had many layers and a little bit of a supernatural element, and I was thoroughly invested in the outcome! A totally bingeable audiobook!
I’m a big fan of January LaVoy’s narration and as usual her performance was wonderful! She seamlessly performs all characters, male and female, a range of ages, with right on emotion bringing the story to life! I voluntarily listened to an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.
Shannon is a fantastic and compelling protagonist. Her life has been marred by personal trauma, but that hasn't stopped her from doing all that she can to help other women in need. She's determined to solve this case even as the impending danger around her builds. I desperately wanted her to find closure from her past as well as her estranged relationship with her father.
There are some reincarnation-themed elements incorporated into the story which served the plot's exploration of fate. However, I'll be honest that I wasn't fully into this aspect for the majority of the book, though I did come to appreciate it better as things fully came together in the end.
𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 is a fast-paced cold case mystery that's full of suspense, hidden identities, and tension. It's both twisty and predictable in parts. At times, it was a little confusing to follow all the threads and characters, but I enjoyed how intricately things unfolded and how the storylines converged. I also sincerely hope Shannon gets some actual therapy and perhaps a vacation; girl needs and deserves it! [3.5☆]
🎙️ January LaVoy is the sole narrator, and I have no notes for her. The story wasn't a full 5 star read for me, but the narration is absolutely flawless and wellworth the listen. If you read this one, choose audio!
While “Photograph” is 180-degrees afield from his usual novels (i.e., Jason Bourne and Jonathan Stride), Brian Freeman still hit it out of the ballpark. The story follows Shannon Wells, an intuitive and somewhat damaged private investigator, as she attempts to solve the murder of a mysterious client; which, ultimately, ties back into several other murders more than a quarter century ago. Added into the mix of suspense, mystery and an array of fascinating characters, Freeman touches on the paranormal by including the notion of reincarnation and past lives being bound up in the murders.
As with Breadcrumbs left on a forest path, Freeman has a gift for leaving an array of clues leading up to the final climax of the novel. Better yet, with an endless number of unexpected twists and turns continually coming down the pike, I often found myself thinking, “…I never saw that one coming.” All in all, this is a great read and a hard book to set aside after the first few chapter.
Worth the read but, gosh I hate an ending that’s tied up nicely with so many coincidences. Very hard to believe. I also felt like there were too many characters to keep track of.
Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Brian Freeman, one of my favorites, returns with an enthralling new protagonist, PI Shannon Wells—fingers crossed for a series! In this captivating crime thriller, PHOTOGRAPH, Wells embarks on a relentless quest for truth that transports her from the sun-soaked landscapes of Florida to the stark realities of Michigan.
As she delves deep into a chilling cold case, Shannon navigates a labyrinth of concealed identities, unsolved murders, and dark cover-ups, all intricately linked to a current triple homicide. Along the way, she finds herself grappling not only with external dangers but also confronting the haunting echoes of her own past trauma. The stakes are high, and the journey promises to be as tumultuous as it is riveting.
About...
Shannon Wells, Private Investigator Nestled in the sun-drenched landscapes of coastal Daytona Beach, Florida, Shannon Wells is a seasoned private investigator with a profound mission: to help women navigate the troubled waters of their lives. Beneath her tough exterior lies a past marred by trauma—a haunting memory of a horrific assault and rape that scarred her soul. The man responsible for her suffering was never brought to justice; instead, he was released, only to go on to commit more heinous acts, including the rape and murder of another innocent victim. Shadowed by this experience, Shannon is plagued by relentless nightmares that she believes are symptoms of PTSD. Yet, her therapist suggests that these vivid dreams may hold a deeper, more unsettling significance.
The Investigation One fateful afternoon, Shannon receives an unexpected visit from Kate Selby, a woman searching for answers about her mother, Faith Selby. A year prior, Faith had sought Shannon's expertise to uncover her true identity. But why? Was it merely a precautionary measure to ensure there were no hidden records in case someone came looking for her? What was she hiding from? It soon becomes clear that Faith’s mysterious past, which she had fought so hard to conceal, has come back to threaten her. A dark shadow looms, with someone determined to keep their secrets buried.
An Old Photo Connection As their conversation unfolds, Kate reveals the tragic news that her mother has been brutally murdered. This devastating revelation sends a chill down Shannon's spine, and all she has to cling to is a cryptic photograph—an old image from 25 years ago. The haunting picture captures a small girl standing alone in the rain at a Midwestern motel, a grim backdrop for a chilling murder that once transpired. This photograph may hold the key to unlocking the truth behind Faith Selby's hidden past and the darkness that now surrounds her daughter.
Decades-Old Mystery: Decades ago, a haunting photograph captured by Faith found its way into the pages of a glossy coffee table book. The image, forever frozen in time, features a young girl standing in front of a dimly lit vending machine at a desolate motel—a site that became infamous for a gruesome murder that transpired that very night.
Connections to Past and Present: As the investigation into this long-cold case unfolds, it unveils a thread that binds the past to the chaotic present. What begins as a search for the truth takes a chilling turn with ties to a recent triple homicide involving a respected prosecutor and his family. This revelation uncovers a sinister present-day threat, suggesting that someone is desperate to keep dark secrets buried beneath layers of time.
Shannon's Personal Demons As Shannon delves deeper into Faith's troubled past, she is compelled to confront her own haunting demons, unearthing a violent scar that has long overshadowed her existence. The journey becomes not just about solving a mystery but about wrestling with the shadows of her own history and the fears that have shaped her identity.
Get ready for a wild, thrill ride mystery filled with suspense and unexpected twists!
My thoughts...
PHOTOGRAPH is an intricately woven tapestry of suspense, skillfully guiding Shannon through a whirlwind of twists and revelations. Beginning in Florida, her journey takes a curious turn during a surreal visit to Cocoa Beach, where she encounters Maro, a mysterious psychic. This enigmatic figure seems to penetrate Shannon's carefully fortified defenses, unlocking a floodgate of visions that lead her to a quaint yet unsettling town in Minnesota—an unsuspecting backdrop for a long-buried crime.
As the narrative unfolds, the pieces of this intricate puzzle begin to snap into place, revealing unexpected twists and turns that expose dark secrets hidden beneath the surface. The stakes rise with each revelation, and the narrative’s tension escalates, propelling readers into a gripping exploration of danger and deceit.
Freeman’s masterful storytelling immerses readers from the very first page, introducing us to the compelling and flawed private investigator, Shannon Wells, hailing from a bar/office in Daytona Beach. Though initially intended as a standalone novel, I find myself yearning for it to spark a new series; Shannon’s talent for digging into unresolved investigations hints at a wealth of stories waiting to be told.
I particularly appreciated the nuanced relationship she shares with her father, a dedicated doctor in Jacksonville, and her collaboration with Kate. Their interactions add a rich layer to the story, expertly intertwining past and present in a way that feels both authentic and heartwarming.
Florida...
As someone who has called the East Coast of Florida home for the past 23 years (from north to south), I hold a deep affection for narratives set in this vibrant state. The author, who shares my area as well, captures the essence of the area beautifully, drawing readers into the familiar sights and sounds of Florida.
Shannon Wells evokes memories of Willow Rose's (a favorite Cocoa Beach author) riveting and flawed Detective Billie Ann Wilder series, navigating similar Florida thrilling terrains in locales I know so well. Wells is also reminiscent of Lisa Gardner's Frankie Elkin and Flora Dane (DD Warren series)—all favorites.
PHOTOGRAPH is a mesmerizing, emotionally charged character-driven thriller that expertly weaves together the intricate threads of crime, mystery, and psychological complexity. It gracefully peels back the layers of memory and identity, revealing the shocking secrets that lie hidden beneath the surface. This captivating narrative is a superb must-read, guaranteed to keep you engrossed and turning pages deep into the night, as each twist and turn pulls you further into its enthralling depths.
If you haven't yet ventured into the world created by this author, consider this book a fantastic entry point, but don't forget to explore his backlist—you can thank me later!
Recs...
PHOTOGRAPH is a gripping tale crafted for devoted fans of the author and anyone who appreciates intricately woven crime thrillers that balance intense suspense with deeply emotional resonance. This novel will particularly appeal to enthusiasts of renowned authors such as Mary Kubica, Lisa Jewell, Lisa Gardner, Michael Robotham, Tami Hoag, and John Hart, inviting readers into a world where every twist and turn reveals not just a thrilling plot but also profound human experiences.
Thank you...
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for graciously providing me with a digital advanced reading copy in exchange for my honest opinions. I am eagerly anticipating the experience of listening to the audiobook, narrated by the incredibly talented January LaVoy; I have no doubt it will be nothing short of spectacular.
📝: “If you find my business card on a bulletin board you’ll find that it says one thing: when nobody cares about you, I do.”
Private Investigator, Shannon Wells opened her own company serving only women shortly after being brutally attacked, assaulted & almost killed. After the way the police, emts, lab techs, lawyers; everyone expected to protect her treated her…she knew she had to help those in similar situations.
“You never think it’ll happen to you, until it does.”
“I learned to fight. I learned to shoot. You come at me, I will kill you.”
Is this perhaps a bit of foreshadowing? Maybe…
When Faith Selby hires Shannon to find out who she really is the search comes up nearly empty. That is until her daughter comes to her begging her to provide her with even the smallest puzzle pieces she found out. For someone murdered her mother & she has no one else to turn to for help.
Together the two women set out on a dangerous journey from Florida to Michigan armed with only a picture from 25 years ago of a little girl in front of an old hotel. But someone doesn’t want them digging around bringing cold cases back up.
Will they both make it out alive? What will Shannon find out about herself in the process?
“We go where we’re destined to go in life.”
This was a slower paced suspense novel that kept me guessing until the end. The part that shocked me the most wasn’t even finding out who the killer was.
Thank you @angiearoundwonderland for buddy reading this one with me.
💭 If your therapist had heterochromia , which eye would you focus on—the blue or the green?
Once again Brian Freeman writes an outstanding standalone book. This is a complex book with very engaging characters and filled with many twists. Shannon is a private investigator and is hired by Kate Shelby, who’s mother was recently murdered, to find out why her mother was murdered. To make matters more complicated, not too long ago Kates mother, Faith, had hired Shannon to find out who she, herself really was. Shannon determines Faith changed her name and started a new life 26 years before. Obviously she was running from someone, but what happened 26 years ago? Shannon determines that 26 years ago Faith took a photo of a little girl in front of a coke machine at a motel, and because of that picture things get really complicated. Now Shannon’s investigation really begins and with more questions than answers, where should she turn. I tell you, Shannon was on quite a journey discovering answers to this puzzle with so many pieces.
Thankfully, this author has written many books. He has leveled up from mystery to thriller, taking on the demon of Devil Creek, destiny, drugs, diamonds and dreams.
Unputdownable! I'm an instant fan. Following Brian Freeman on GR now. It would have been 5 stars, but at 60% in, I already knew who the killer was. Nevertheless, it was still a great execution.
Brian Freeman is a master of suspense! This dark & twisty thriller will take you on a thrill ride from Florida to Michigan and keep you guessing until the very end. There were so many twists and turns, I was starting to get whiplash. I especially like when he brings a little bit of woo-woo to go along with the intrigue.
This was a very engaging, multi-layered mystery. As one layer peeled away, another one appeared. The mystery had a supernatural thread that wandered through the story. It reminded me a little of Simone St. James’ books. The story featured PI Shannon Wells, whose office was a Tiki shack on Daytona Beach. She gets involved in a cold case mystery from 26 years in the past. From the beaches of Florida to a small town in Michigan, we follow Shannon as the layers are peeled away. I do have to note that there were several sections in the book that were hard to believe would really happen. Even stretching my imagination, they were pretty far fetched. I tried not to let them ruin the great parts of the book.
