Most of the time when I’m reading I can absolutely assure you it’s nothing that will in any way shape or form enrich my brain 🤣 however in the case of Andie Holman’s the Mermaids Wrath I feel like I learned a gajillion ocean/ pollution/ plastic facts while happily reading along to a life /death with some yearning thrown in story. She’s mastered educational games for adults in book from lol I can’t wait to see what comes of Jelly and Mackos story and their fight to save the ocean and planet. You can tell how passionate Andie is about the topic while still weaving an excellent story.

This book is an absolute masterpiece! I adored the authors writing style and it kept me on edge every chapter. For me there were no boring parts. The underwater world is magical, but there is also a darker side to this story. How we as humans are slowly destroying our planet and the effect is has on underwater life. This book activates you to think about this and remind you what is happening in real life as well. This book had fae, mermaids, witches, shifters and more magical creatures. It had a kick-ass female main character, amazing side characters, lot over character growth, funny and sad parts. It was sexy, without being it being smutty. The book also had a lot of fun facts which I really enjoyed. If you like a good fantasy book, an action packed story, a book with a message and an overal magical experience: this book is for you!

Books are such interesting things. When I picked up this story, I expected a typical mermaid romance book. It had those elements of course but it went so much deeper. The devastation caused by human in this made me so angry and hurt with how Jelly's people were being affected. While the story is fictional, I see how real the damage we are doing to our own planet. The trash, destroying the environment, and not caring about the repercussions. Very real consequences. This book, while fiction, shows exactly what could happen in a way that makes you think. I love Jelly. I love her passion, her righteous anger, but also her desire to fight and fix things. With it being about 450 pgs, it was a lot to take on. The story was dense and complex. Fiction mixed with unfortunate reality but I loved it so much. I know its only the beginning of the year but this is one of my favorite reads so far. I think this story will stick with me for a long time.

Jelly, a kick ass warrior mermaid, vows to rid the ocean of plastics. With the help of other magical beings, she also fights a Fae for the lives of the humans destroying the planet.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I also have a passion for getting rid of plastics and other harmful substances killing the earth.
Jelly was fierce and loyal. She was not afraid to stand up for what she believed. Her anger got her into trouble more than once. Friends and her strength of body and mind saved her.
This book was action packed and kept my attention.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is a fiercely original eco-fantasy that blends mythology, rage, and activism into a sharp, heartfelt narrative. What I loved most was how unapologetically raw and angry Jelly is. She’s not your typical wide-eyed mermaid. She’s a warrior with scars, fire, and purpose. Her voice is sharp, sarcastic, and laced with grief for a world drowning in human apathy. The worldbuilding is immersive and gorgeously detailed, especially the tragic contrast between the magic-protected underwater city and the polluted surface.

If you’re a fan of The Deep by Rivers Solomon, Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan, or any story featuring angry girls, eco-warriors, and magical rebellion, this one will be right up your coral-lined alley. *wink*

I received this via Goodreads Giveaway. It took me a minutes to get into it, but once the story took off, I found myself fully engaged. Two Mermaid warriors take to land to try and save their world as an angry Fae wants something that does not rightfully belong to him. This novel also sheds light on the issue of plastics and its affects as it pollutes our waters and its woven throughout the novel.

A mermaid mythology with modern-day consequences, that was an emotional and hauntingly relevant read. I like the idea of eco-fantasy, and the beginning of this book is really good. And then… oh well… let’s be bold, why not… it turns into a ridiculous story about a mermaid desperately wanting to get laid. Sorry, but the sex talk in this book reminds me of a bunch of horny, drunk teens from the ’90s. DNF at about 50%.

What if the creatures of the deep rose up to face their fears and saved themselves since us land dwellers are the problem?? I went into this with a bad @ss Ariel in mind and I wasn’t disappointed. Because it soon became what if Ariel was from Wakanda?? Insane but awesome, right? Right! But! Jelly (great name) is her own worst enemy sometimes but such a headstrong warrior for her world. A feeling of protection us humans should have.
This sort was not disney inspired spin off. No, that’s just my comprehension. The spice of the romance aspect is not family friendly. This novel is over 400 pages but reads fast as there is so much at stake, and when jelly’s visions start the anxious feeling keeps you reading past your bedtime. Everything from names, to concept, to pace, imagery, is all at 5 star level.

I was definitely drawn into this story. The characters were complex and the sheer amount of magic/magical creatures kept my attention. I look forward to seeing where all these characters wind up. my biggest complaint would be the repetitive use of "she bit her cheek/lips" in one form or another. While it does feed into the story at certain points, I feel like it was overused a bit.

Torn between saving the ocean and the humans above the surface, warrior mermaid Jelly must make the impossible choice. The Mermaid’s Wrath is a debut romantasy I couldn’t read fast enough. The descriptive narration is immersive with intricate world-building. The characters are relatable and leap from the page and into your heart. This is not the little mermaid you grew up on but a fierce warrior mermaid with a righteous temper. The Mermaid’s Wrath brings topics such as environmental pollution to light that will make you think about what happens long after you finish reading.

Let’s talk about the characters, specifically Jelly. I adore strong female heroines. Jelly is strong, fiery, and fights for what’s right. She hates what’s happening to the ocean and blames it on humans. But when she is forced to interact with humans, her viewpoint changes. Yes, she’s a mermaid but she’s also tired of the rules enforced. I connected with her on so many levels. I swear, I want her in my corner and as a best friend.

The rest of the characters are intriguing and well-written. Each character has their own voice and personality. Together, they add depth to the overall story.

The world-building is intricate and makes this story come alive. Andie Holman takes her time building the world she’s created, layering in detail as one would do in building a foundation for a house. After reading just a few pages, I was hooked.

If you’re looking for an original romantasy featuring a warrior mermaid whose wrath knows no bounds, pick up The Mermaid’s Wrath. A brilliant read from start to finish.

I found The Mermaid's Wrath both enjoyable and disappointing, but what underwhelmed me might be perfect for another reader, so here goes...

The story follows Jelly, a warrior mermaid desperate to save the oceans from pollution and humanity's negligence as a whole. When an even darker presence threatens her and her loved ones because of a mysterious pearl she inherited, Jelly joins forces with a vibrant cast of characters, including mers, fae, shifters, and animals, to thwart it. The journey also forces her to embrace her traumas, powers, and desires.

The world-building of The Mermaid's Wrath is detailed and vivid in terms of the mer and fae societies and how they fit within civilisation and history as we know it.

There's also intriguing depth to key characters, especially Jelly, a dynamic female lead embodying very familiar and poignant feminist and ecological rage. Even animals are woven into the narrative in delightful and exciting ways.

Another element I enjoyed is the use of real-world facts within the plot and character development, further merging fantasy and reality in an immersive, action-packed adventure laced with romance.

Unfortunately, this is where The Mermaid's Wrath lost me. I'm all for sex positivity, but romantacy just isn't a genre I care about. My interest gradually dips when romance takes over a plot unnecessarily, someone rips their shirt off in every other scene, and almost every character is depicted as a staggeringly beautiful model. Some forewarning in the Discovery blurb or tags would have been appreciated.

Additionally, even though the writing style is generally good, there are moments where the description or dialogue is awkward or redundant. A lot could have been cut out. The depiction of English and Scot characters also felt a bit too focused on stereotypes. I wasn't sure how to feel about that.

Overall, I was captivated by the book's first few chapters, particularly its ecological and societal messages and Jelly's character development. As the plot unfolded, however, I struggled to stay on top of the plot because of the unnecessary details and romantically themed noise obscuring it. While I appreciated some aspects of The Mermaid's Wrath, I'm sad to say that I didn't fully enjoy it from start to finish.

"She saw plastic and just lost her temper."

The Mermaid's Wrath follows Jelly, a mermaid warrior tasked with getting pregnant to a human and instead gets pulled into an interspecies war over a magic pearl. This may sound like an absolute direction change, but in the context of it's Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch setting and recurring theme of survival, it does fit together.

At times, the 'eco' part of the eco-fantasy can be shoe-horned. Characters, particularly the mer-folk, openly discuss the plastic they find and what do the humans do with it and why don't they recycle when it's so easy? These conversations play out rather like a PSA performed by hungover college students; cheesy and wooden. Fortunately, these conversations are sporadic enough to avoid becoming preachy.

The story itself was predictable at times, and the sheer amount of magical creatures leant for some bizarre plot armour. Grudges are dropped, time is travelled, the Mother talks and just 'is'. While it would have been interesting to explore any of these points in more detail - and these were just the ones that stood out to me as the most abrupt - I was ready for an action-packed story that didn't feel the need to overexplain itself.

The first in a new series, this novel confidently stands alone as an unflinching reminder to stand (or whatever the swimming equivalent would be) for what you believe in, and to bloody recycle.

I picked this up because the premise sounded interesting, but I ended up staying for the characters and the worldbuilding.

Jelly is such a refreshing protagonist. She's strong, stubborn, curious, and far from perfect, which made her feel real and easy to root for. I loved that she questioned things instead of simply accepting them, and her voice brought a lot of personality to the story.

The underwater world was one of my favorite parts of the book. It felt imaginative and distinct, and I enjoyed discovering more about the different races, histories, and tensions that shape the story. There was always a sense that there was something bigger happening beneath the surface.

I also appreciated that the book blends adventure, fantasy, humor, and emotion without losing momentum. There was enough mystery and intrigue to keep me turning pages, and I found myself getting invested in what would happen next.

If you enjoy fantasy with a strong female lead, immersive worldbuilding, and a story that offers more than a typical mermaid tale, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.

2.5, but I’ll round up because I appreciate the message.

This is an eco romantasy, and honestly maybe the first of its kind. I have to give credit for the research that went into this, which was good and pertinent. The message is also good and important and I appreciate it. The climax and ending was pretty good and page turning at the end.

However, this book needed some editing. It didn’t need to be as long as it was. There were pages of content that could’ve been cut with little impact on moving the story forward. And even with so much dialogue, there was a lack of real character development beyond Jelly and maybe Mori. I’m not convinced on Jelly’s age here; 27 is too old for some of the behaviors she engages in. There is a lot of this that felt juvenile. Also the sex talk? Too much. There didn’t need to be all of that, and there’s not even a proper spicy scene?? It really cheapens the book for me.

What a fun adventure! I don't typically read Fantasy but I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. As a newbie to the genre, it took me a bit to get used to the "anything goes" plot which was a bit drawn out but once it got going it had a very inspiring finish. I especially loved the land and aquatic animals of all kinds working together to help save the world. Favorite quote: "Remember that every small creature matters." It was well-researched with lots of detail on endangered and invasive species.

There are beautifully written, unique and endearing passages throughout the novel. With the author's ability to command the English language so well, I give this 4.5 stars because for me far too much time was wasted talking about the men's physiques in a somewhat crude way, to the point where it made me feel uncomfortable. If women's bodies were discussed like this the feminists would be in an uproar so I'm not sure if this is satirical or included to make it extra enticing for young readers. If that's what it takes to get their attention about the plight of the oceans and encourage them to campaign against single-use plastics, thank you!

Few authors manage to present an eco based story that leads the reader into caring for the environment more that they do when they start reading what is offered.
