CeCe Campbell wakes up two years after her eighteenth birthday to a new reality. This post-apocalyptic romantasy is somewhat different and pulls on the emotional heartstrings. A parasite causing violence in humans changes the world. Then she meets the guy who bit her and made her one of the undead.

CeCe’s feelings, vulnerabilities, experiences, and strengths play large roles in this novel. While the story gives readers a great feeling for CeCe’s new reality, I wanted to know more about what the initial cause of the parasite was and what was happening in the outside world. Additionally, the pacing was a little inconsistent at times. Despite this, the story had plenty of angst, some suspense, and even some action. Several themes are explored including understanding others, coping with a changed world, having a purpose, concern and worry over loved ones missing or in another location, grief over those who died, extremist groups, and optimism versus pessimism.

Overall, this novel has both heartbreaking and heartwarming moments with a likeable, but flawed protagonist who must navigate a world where friends and most family are dead or missing. While the suspense level is relatively low, the emotional tugs, a little romance, and the action at the end provide a solid read. The characterization was excellent.

Boroughs Publishing Group and H. J. Ramsey provided a complimentary digital copy of this novel via Booktrovert. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was February 20, 2025.

A must read!

Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead is a captivating journey into a world reshaped by a devastating virus that turns people into zombies, with only a rare cure holding the power to restore them. The protagonist, Cece, struggles to find her place in this new world after being cured, but with half her family left to return to, the weight of loss is heavy on her heart. The story takes a compelling twist when she encounters Derrick—the very boy who turned her. The tension between hatred and an undeniable attraction creates an intriguing push-pull dynamic, making their relationship both complex and heartbreaking.

This book weaves a beautiful love story alongside themes of grief, survival, and the complexities of family dynamics. With engaging action, heartfelt moments, and witty dialogue, it’s an emotional rollercoaster that keeps you turning pages. The delicate balance between romance and the scars left by trauma makes this novel a truly special read, full of both sweetness and suspense.

Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead opens to our narrator CeCe waking up to the end of a zombie apocalypse as the cure is being dolled out in waves. CeCe was a very likable protagonist who wakes up to a world in no way resembling her before. Reading along as CeCe navigates her new normal while missing her mom and brother as well as her friends kept me turning the page as this new world builds. More a dystopian story than zombie apocalypse only as the cure has been found and distributed to most people. Suspense level low due to this, but I still enjoyed from start to finish. Just don’t expect hear pounding suspense.
Thanks BookSirens for this ARC, I’m leaving my review voluntarily.

Wow, this was really great! I had been expecting something like Warm Bodies, but this was very different! Not Zombie and Human fall in love, but more along the lines of culprit and victim do. But that's not entirely correct, either. There is a much bigger story behind those stomach butterflies, and the butterflies have teeth!!

Wow , what can I say about this book apart from the fact that I loved it and it’s a must read. At first I didn’t think I would enjoy this book as it’s not my usual genre and not one I’m familiar with but I instantly fell in love with the characters and the whole plot of the story.
The story is set in a post apocalyptic world where a deadly virus has wiped out civilisation and caused mass devastation and turned the general population into zombies.
We meet our main character Cee Cee who has woken up 2 years after being bitten by derrrick who will later be her love interest.
I really wasn’t ready for the raw emotion in this book as Cee Cee tries to make sense of the new normal and as she battles with her emotions , complicated feelings and her new reality.
I really connected with Cee Cee throughout this book and could relate to the character as the world in which the author had created was reminiscent of the post Covid 19 pandemic .
I throughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it and would like to read any other books by this author.

At its core, Love & Other Cures for the Recently Undead is a gritty, emotional, and strangely tender post-apocalyptic coming-of-age tale. We follow CeCe, a teenage girl who wakes up from a two-year blackout only to discover she was among the Infected, essentially the undead, during the downfall of civilization. As she tries to rebuild a life in a world that has changed beyond recognition, she confronts loss, trauma, guilt, and, unexpectedly, the guy who bit her. It’s not just a zombie survival story, it’s about identity, healing, and navigating the ugly mess of grief and rebirth.

I wasn’t prepared for how raw this book would hit. The opening chapters aren’t action-packed in the usual undead thriller way, but they are claustrophobic and gut-wrenching. CeCe waking up in darkness, confused and crushed under bodies, is horrifying, not because of gore but because it’s so human and real. Ramsay doesn't rush the emotional recovery, and I appreciated that. You really feel CeCe’s pain when she realizes her mother didn’t make it, that her best friend and boyfriend are missing, that she’s been gone for two years and everything she loved (tennis, high school, her future) is shattered. That kind of slow-burn horror hits harder than any jump scare.

The writing style is simple but effective. Ramsay keeps things clean and fast-moving, even when the plot slows down. There’s a lot of introspection, especially in scenes where CeCe returns to her old school as part of the Rehabilitation Program. Those moments of being surrounded by other damaged kids with missing limbs, haunted eyes, and weird silence hit me like a punch to the chest. And the subtle tension with Olivia, the hostile Survivor, is quietly terrifying. But where the book really surprised me was Derrick. The boy who infected CeCe? It turns out he's been cured, too. And somehow, this book manages to make you feel something when they meet again. Confused anger. Loathing. Maybe even curiosity. I didn’t want to root for him, but I found myself leaning in.

What really stood out was the emotional weirdness of returning to something familiar that’s now unrecognizable. Ramsay captures that eerie feeling of trying to go back to normal when “normal” is gone forever. When CeCe walks through her school, sees her old tennis team photo, or opens her ex-boyfriend’s locker. Those moments are small, but they carry so much weight. And it’s honestly heartbreaking how she’s just expected to rejoin society, do her homework, eat her weird canned spaghetti, and pretend everything’s fine. It’s not. It never will be. And that tension between survival and actual living is what keeps the book from falling into cliché.

Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead is for anyone who’s ever felt like a stranger in their own life, or tried to rebuild something that doesn’t quite fit anymore. It’s not a light read, but it’s oddly hopeful in its own way. There’s still love. There’s still friendship. And there’s still that weird human ability to keep going, even when everything’s broken. I didn’t expect to care this much about a girl with a zombie bite. I’m glad I read it.

it was a really interesting read, the blurb had me hooked, romance set in a zombie apocalypse? i mean hell yeah! As someone who loves the zombie genre this sounded well up my street. We are introduced to Cece a young woman who has just turned 18 when the world around her starts falling apart. Bitten by someone she assumes is a drunk man in need of help, she becomes the infected and we start our journey with her as someone newly cured and ready to be integrated back into society. it’s a really interesting concept and did make me think of warm bodies in the clashing of the genre. i thought it was really interesting to think about what life would be like for those affected by such a virus if a cure was found and how those who fought for their life would react against those who had previously been a threat.

The love story between Derrick and Cece was sweet, it grew from a chance meeting, maybe they were destined, though what a weird meet cute to tell the grandkids! Although i did enjoy the book it wasn’t without its flaws. there were times it felt too rushed and i had many unanswered questions. i feel like this could be a two parter to delve into more detail as the way the plot is often rushed made it very unbelievable at times, and yes i know i’m saying that about a book that includes zombies!

The book tackles some really interesting topics, including loss and trauma and dealing with the aftermath of not just our own actions, but the actions of others. The extremist group serve to remind us that even when the world is falling apart there will be those out there that relish the opportunity to say ‘i told you so’ and they made for great antagonists. The story itself is fairly short and an easy to read in one day book. i found myself not wanting to put it down. As the title suggests love is the cure, love invites hope within our heart that things will get better, even in adversity.

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

I’ve always joked that if the world went to hell, I’d go to Costco haha and that’s exactly what they did. I felt very emotional reading the beginning because it’s serious stuff, a zombie infection/virus, the author does a great job at depicting the world around as well as the emotions of what’s happening around everyone. It really makes you think, what would really happen during a zombie infection, how once their is a cure, how it slowly has to go back to somewhat of a civilization, that’s what this book is about. It’s hard to come around to her dad being a veterinarian to being the one who saves the world with the cure for the virus, what’s his story and history to have been able to do so? It kind of reminds me of warm bodies where there’s some serious parts (cause duh) and then some tender parts as well. It can get a little slow at times, nothing that’s driving the story other than them hanging out. The first s*x scene felt off, she never really mentioned being intamate before so now suddenly having this urge and it just happens so fast, the book , their relationship seems more sweet, innocent, it just felt like it came out of nowhere. I need closure with her ex boyfriend!!!! Everyone else got closure. There could have been a love triangle or a surprise ending for a book two! Ooooh that would have been good haha.

Overall, I loved it! I’d give it a 4-4.25 haha. I’ve never read a book like this before and I’m so happy I went out of my comfort zone because I ate this book up <— see what I did there haha. I’m so excited to see what else this author comes up with.

A line I liked:
She almost wants to laugh with the irony of it. The guy who took her happiness is bringing it
back to her.

This book is excellent. It is so much more than a romance novel. It touches on many heavy topics including religious fanaticism, post-traumatic stress, and complex family dynamics. This book kept me awake at night, reading chapter after chapter.

The main character CeCe is in a coma for a few years. This causes her to have a complicated dynamic with her father because they live emotionally in two different timelines. For Cece, her mother’s death happened last week. For her father, it was two years ago. He treats her like a teenager one minute and then expects her to act like a young woman in her early twenties the next. The family drama is believable and relatable.

I hate dark, abusive, shadow-daddy male leads so I love it when I find a romance novel with a well-written, mentally healthy male lead. Derrick is a great character. He is loving, supportive, and protective. He is such a great guy, I found myself getting angry at CeCe when her post-traumatic stress caused a rift between them. Her actions are believable and understandable due to everything she’s experienced, but I still wanted to lecture her. You know it is a great book and you are sucked in when you want to have a conversation with one or more of the characters.

I hate it in Zombie movies when the stupid characters hide in a mall and wait to be picked off one by one. It is refreshing to see humans organize, rebuild, and try to make the best of an impossible situation. This is the best zombie romance since Warm Bodies. I want a sequel involving CeCe and Derrick crossing the zombie infested US to get back to his family.

H.J. Ramsey's "Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead" is a delightful and surprisingly moving exploration of grief, identity, and the enduring power of love, all wrapped in a charming contemporary fantasy package. This isn't your typical zombie apocalypse story; it's a tender and witty narrative about finding humanity, and perhaps even love, in the face of the impossible.

In the book, Ramsey skillfully navigates the complexities of CeCe's situation. The story isn't just about romantic love; it's about CeCe reclaiming her sense of self after experiencing profound loss. The struggle with her altered body, the fear of losing control, and the alienation from her former life are all handled with sensitivity and nuance. The author avoids sensationalism, instead focusing on the internal turmoil of a character grappling with a new and frightening reality.

However, the book isn't without its minor flaws. At times, the pacing can feel slightly uneven, with certain plot points feeling rushed while others are drawn out. Some secondary characters could have been more fleshed out.

Despite these minor criticisms, "Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead" is a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking read. It's a refreshing take on the undead genre, offering a compelling blend of romance, humor, and poignant reflection on what it truly means to be human, even - or perhaps especially - when you're not. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy contemporary fantasy with a touch of gothic romance and a whole lot of heart.

I like to think of myself as a zombie connoisseur. Fast, slow, dead, they all generally work for me in one way or another. This was a new take for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it! This isn't the first post apocalyptic romance, I've read, but it is the first from the other side.

CeeCee wakes up two years after an encounter with an Infected (this book's name for zombies) that lead to her getting bit on the hand. Her dad is the only person in her family that didn't die or disappear during those two years. The government found a way to help some of the Infected regain their senses. With help from her dad, she navigates the world that is left. What happens when she meets the boy that started it all for her?

This was a quick read with deep, complex characters that acted in a way that was believable for their age. CeeCee learning her way through a very different world than the one she knew was analogous to what teens go through while learning societally appropriate for the beginning stages of adulthood.

There's quite a few other things that I want to touch on, but I don't want to spoil anything. In my opinion, this is one of those stories that going in as blind as possible.

A great young adult book that I think even the picky readers will find something to like. 4🌟

Thank you so much to the author and @lovebookstours for providing me with a copy of this book for the purposes of review. My thoughts are, as always, my own and honest.

This is a coming of age tale set among a post-apocalyptic type situation that explores family dynamics, love, growing up, and moving on.
Cece wakes after 2 years of chaos in the world and has to learn to adjust to having lost friends and family in a great unknown. Theres so many moving parts to this that it keeps you gripped all the way through.
I loved the complexities of the virus, survivors, infected, and Revies. It was a really fascinating world that the author carefully constructed.
My one issue was the length of the chapters, I like a short snappy chapter that deals with one thing, and then in the next chapter, the next thing occurs. This wasn't like that, with long chapters covering multiple days, weeks, and events. This meant I sometimes got a little lost as so much happened, and there weren't many natural stopping places to take a pause and recount what I'd just read. As someone who reads quite quickly, I find this is something I need, and I just didn't get that with how this is written.
Overall, this was a fast-paced, really interesting read with a real mish-mash genre that it's quite difficult to categorise. I'd definitely recommend it and I'd love to read more, I think there's definitely room for this to grow into a duology, maybe even a trilogy, as there's still so many things I'd like to know.

💭 Thoughts-
I honestly really enjoyed this book and thought it had such a unique story to it with the whole “what would your story be if you got turned into a zombie but then got “cured” and was supposed to go back to normal?”. The only real thing I didn’t love about this book was that I felt that it needed more of a plot plot and not just the romance plot because it’s a dystopian and I felt they could have done an equal split of romance and plot to add more balance when instead they almost completely focused on the romance aspect of it. Yes, I do get that this is a romance book , but it’s also a dystopian novel, which means it also should have some more backstory about maybe where the zombie virus came from? Or what’s going to happen afterwards with the whole thing? And just things like that, that could have really added to it and made it more than just a romance book without much of a plot, and add more depth and character to the book.

Oh my gosh! I read this book in 24 hours! I could not put it down. Definitely a shelf trophy. I loved every second of this book. Let’s start with what I didn’t like, first, however.

This book needed more thorough editing. There were random and weird typos, and the chapters gained titles briefly around 70%, and then ended just as quickly as they came. And I understand we had a flashback in there, but the titles were still not there, then there, and then not there again. It was offputting and confusing.

What I did like: Cece’s story. Her development throughout the book, especially when it came to her father, Lauren, and Derrick. I cried with her at each new stage of becoming and cheered when she had successes. I wept like a baby when I thought all had been lost at 70%, and then again later in the book. This book had me seriously believing that it would not end happily ever after and I was there for it in every word.

I read this book digitally. I will be reading more books by this author, for sure.

I got a free digital copy of this book from BookSiren and these are my honest opinions of the book.

I do love a good zombie book, but this one was a different tale on the zombie read. Rather than going into the apocalypse, we were dealing in the aftermath, with people having recovered from it, with a cute, and now having to deal with or find coping means for the after.
I really liked that the book still had a true zombie ring to it, with the virus and cures and losses of people and pretty much a loss of humanity, and then having to rebuild all of that.
I was really moved by the way the book dove into the feelings of loss, grief, survivors guilt, in a way, and finding new things like love, but not knowing if you should feel it, both in the situation and after what you have just been through. It touched base on the return of feelings and emotions and how that affected everyone in waves, as it hit them, and in very different ways. All this, whilst dealing with the underlying, what to do if you feel something for the person who turned you in the first place. I found this whole book brilliant.

This was another quick read for me (which is a good thing!) I can read books fairly quickly when I get drawn in, as I just keep coming back to it! This was one of those books. I received this book as a giveaway from Booktrovert (go check it out) and immediately dove in.
This is a book written for entertainment and escape. The characters act as if you think they should, with the main character being a girl who turned 18 on the eve of the Infected outbreak, and waking up two years later as a cured person. This is new viewpoint on zombies that I can’t remember seeing before, so I enjoyed that aspect of it. The focus isn’t on the zombies, however, so if you’re in it for fighting and surviving in that aspect, you should look elsewhere. This book focuses on the human condition and resiliency, even in the face of horrible things. Also on how difficult those things can be, with one taking two steps forward and three steps back at times. I enjoyed this story and am wondering if there are/will be more!

Love and Other Cures for the Recently Undead by @hjramsay is the story of Cece who is just recovering after having been bitten by the Infected. Cece’s world has changed in the two years that she was recovering - everyone she cared for is either missing or dead, except her father, who is a veterinarian who has been working on a cure for the virus. Complicating things is the presence of Derrick, who Cece feels drawn to, but ironically, is also the one who infected her in the first place.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the characters were likeable and realistic, and that the storyline was well-developed. I thought the premise of the book was also very creative and interesting. This feels like the kind of story that could be turned into a Netflix series. My only critique was that I wish the book was longer because I enjoyed it so much.

So Cece is now back with the living after being cure from the disease that turned people into zombies. Okay now follow me the guy who turned her Derrick is all here in her presence. The dislike she has for him combined with the attraction she is fighting I was here for it. Here’s the thing right okay he did a bad thing by bitting her but I mean it turned out okay she is alive yes she lost some people she loved but she lived. The dynamic between the characters in this book was good we have some struggles to deal with old and new feelings, unfinished relationships that are just needing to be healed. The FMC has definitely been through it from the way she woke up ( think dark and twisted) to having to return to find yourself in the places that cause you so much trauma but is needed in order to heal. Great story great relationship great reading journey.

I was initially intrigued by the title of this book. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down! CeCe’s story is unique and engaging. Waking from a deadly virus, CeCe finds herself in a world transformed. The Kill Virus has devastated human existence and created an almost post apocalyptic world full of Infected, Revvies and those who have been cured. Her father is pivotal in the recovery program and is determined to keep her safe. I thought CeCe was a great character; conflicted, angry, guilty and human. She is well written and completely authentic. Her relationship with Derrick, with its hidden secret was interesting to see how it played out. The detailed descriptions of the world and the infected were totally believable adding to the plausibility of the story. This was an easy, engaging read that had me completely invested all the way through.

This was a good book. I enjoyed the story and felt the concept was wrong. Virus epidemics are so relevant at the minute what with COVID-19 taking hold.

The cover wasn't really for me. I'm not a big fan of real people on covers. It did however work well for the book and I'm certain others will love it! It is designed really well! Cover has no impact on rating or review!

The book is written well and flowed perfectly. The descriptions are excellent. It gave me the Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian vibes which I loved.

I loved the characters. They all worked well. I really liked CeCe. She was brave and her story made me so sad. Derrick was a good guy. I liked him a lot. I loved the story between CeCe and Derrick. It unfolded beautifully.

The book is written in third person and is from CeCe's point of view. This worked well for me.

I loved this book so much! I definitely recommend it. Love can cure everything in my opinion!!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great story, interesting characters and zombies. This being my first read about zombies, I didn’t know what to expect beyond the undead.
The beginning was hard to get through, dark and depressing. Understandably our FMC has just woken up from a two-year coma, after becoming a zombie, bitten by a guy, Derrick, she’d tried to help. As she adjusts to her new life as a recently not-undead, cured by her veterinarian dad, she meets Derrick, also cured from the Kill Virus. He befriends her not realizing he’s the guy who infected her, but she knows it was him.

No more spoilers….i loved the story. Restored my faith in humanity, and in how, together, we can get through anything, even a zombie apocalypse.

This was a really fun, zombie apocalypse book. Having said that there weren't many actual zombies, but that's what I liked about it. It was more about love and finding a cure, than actual zombies.

I really liked the writing style which felt accessible and easy to read. The characters were well written and genuine. I really liked CeCe and was desperate for her to have some kind of happy ending.

I think this book would be perfect for older teens/young adults, or someone who is new to the zombie genre and doesn't like too much gore in their fiction.

I can see this being turned into a film, sort of like Warm Bodies was done. I feel like for me it did leave me a little wanting, to want to know more about what happened to the world, how it became the way it was, etc. I think sometimes it was very straight to the point, they did this, then did that. Like a little rushed through on some areas and others were slower, however, I think that the overall story was good.

I did like that Cece was vulnerable and raw with her experiences about her mom and how it was good to see her being able to move forward.

Good post-apocalyptic book by H.J. Ramsay. We meet CeCe who wakes after being infected, and everything she’s known and understood has changed. Her struggles feel real, her grief over lost friends and family very emotional. There is also little bit of romance that kept story interesting.

Good overall book, but I was waiting for more action, something big and dangerous to happen, and I got it in the end but was to short for me.Still I'm happy that I read it,it was good and different then other
post-apocalyptic books that I read so far and would recommend.

CeCe wakes up from dreams of teeth and blood and zombies only to discover her dreams were memories, she's been in stasis for two years, her veterinarian father discovered the cure for the "kill virus" and the boy who bit her may not be the monster she thought he was.
Love and Other Cures is more than a zombie romance as not just CeCe, but the world learns to adapt to a new reality, with a few twists and turns along the way. Highly recommend.

Book Review: Love & Other Cures for the Recently Undead by H.J. Ramsay

Cece wakes up in a Costco (yes, you read that right) — confused, disoriented, and found out she had been one of the undead. A deadly virus 🦠 has swept through the world, leaving people either dead, infected, or fighting to survive. After 2 years in a coma, Cece is one of the “lucky” ones cured — but what does it mean to live again when you’ve already been a zombie?🧟

This post-apocalyptic tale filled with zombies, survival, and second chances, Cece navigates a strange new world and the unexpected emotions of falling for the guy who once made her a monster. Yes, she falls for the young man who bit her and made her a zombie!

This is a fast fun read!

This was an exciting read, fast paced living through and passed a zombie apocalypse. finding your way and then finding love could be tough so nice to read about it.

The world building and character creation was well thought out and created so it did feel real reading it. It kept me intrigued, and it wasn't too lovely dovey / romantic which was nice, as its off putting for me when it gets too much.

I really did enjoy this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I did like Cece and Derrick. Cece was my favourite character. I really did connect with her.I really didn't like Olivia or Rob at all. I did like Cece's dad. I loved the writing style and the story. This was an emotional rollercoaster of a read. I would definitely recommend this as a must read. I will be keeping an eye on this author.

Love & Other Cures for the Recently Undead is a thrilling blend of heartfelt romance, quirky humor, and just the right touch of the undead. H.J. Ramsay creates a world that’s both imaginative and relatable, with characters you can’t help but root for. The balance between love, friendship, and family makes this story so memorable. If you love romance with a twist, this book is a must-read!

I was curious about this and the cover intrigued me. I have to say it was much better than I imagined. I thought it would be an interesting Zombie love story, but it was a lot more. Love is key, but it plays second fiddle to a story of overcoming and finding your way in a new reality. It was fresh and unexpected. I ate through the book in a day and really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.
