Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst, has always scorned the supernatural—until a head injury left him with the unnerving ability to see visions through touch. Though he loathes the curse, it’s proven invaluable in solving murder investigations alongside Miss Matilda Wren.
When Hadrian’s mother hires Tilda to investigate a medium who claims she can contact her late son, Tilda and Hadrian are drawn into a deadly game. Mediums across London are falling victim to the “Levitation Killer,” and the murderer’s chilling focus soon shifts to them both.
Forced to rely on his visions as never before, Hadrian must fully embrace the gift he despises—and risk everything to keep Tilda safe.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The Spiritualism movement has interested me (how widespread it was and how many famous people were believers), and I enjoyed reading a mystery about it. (sidenote: I read the invention of electricity over candlelight was part of its demise). Be sure to read the authors notes. The book can be read as a stand-alone, but it will be much improved if you read the previous books. The Earls special talent plays an important role in the story line, and it was well done. The pacing of the book started off strong slowed a bit in the middle and ended with a bang. My thoughts on Hadrian and Tilda are that I wish they would either move it to a romance or drop it and just be colleagues. I rate it 3.75* and look forward to the next book.
Matilda Wren and Hadrian Beckett, Earl of Ravenhurst, once more find themselves in the thick of events, this time prompted by Lord Ravenhurst’s mother, the Dowager Countess. Lady Ravenhurst wants to consult a spiritualist. Shes desperate to be in touch with her youngest son Gabriel who died in an accident, to ensure he’s alright and at peace. However she’s somewhat sceptical of mediums. Lady Ravenhurst hires Tilda to investigate the London Spiritualist Society whom the medium is associated with as she attends her first séance. Ravenshurst and Tilda accompany her. A day later the medium she consulted, Mrs. Frost is found dead, hanging from the stairs looking as though she’d levitated. The Leviation Killer becomes the talk of London, particularly as two more mediums die in the same manner—helped along by prussic acid. What’s more Lady Ravenhurst has not been deterred. Shes convinced Mrs. Frost skills were genuine and is even more eager to resume contact with Gabriel. Hadrian is concerned and furious. Tilda’s investigative skills aided by Ravenshurst’s special gift unravel many aspects of the case, including a deep dive into the Society and its organisational peculiarities. Along the way Ravenshurst learns more about his gift or curse. Tilda is still off center after the kiss they shared, but moves forward putting their Investigation first. Another triumph for Burke with this unusual duo’s team work and abilities giving Raven and Wren’s third mystery based around the Victorian occupation with mediums and séances a lively sense of reality.

Twists, Secrets & a Lord Who Can Read Memories — What’s Not to Love?
I’ve just finished the Raven & Wren series by Darcy Burke, and honestly, it’s a solid 5 out of 5 stars from me. These books are addictive! What I love most is how original the mysteries are. You never quite know who the real murderer is until the very end. There’s always someone arrested halfway through but then the real twist hits. The writing is great detailed and atmospheric. You can really picture the world and the characters. I also love the bit of supernatural with Lord Raven being able to read memories. That’s such a unique touch, and it really adds to the story without being over the top. Now, I do have a couple of small gripes. It’s a bit of a stretch that a lord would team up with someone of lower class in that period. And having a woman run the whole show? Yeah, probably not very realistic for the era either. Also, Miss Wren is fantastic, no doubt but the constant praise she gets from other characters felt a bit much sometimes. She proves herself through her actions, so I didn’t need to be reminded every other chapter how amazing she is. The slow-burn romance between Lord Raven and Miss Wren has a great chemistry, but wow, it really drags in places. At times I just wanted to yell, “Hurry up already!” Still, their dynamic is great, and when things finally happen, it’s satisfying. Overall, I absolutely loved the series. The mysteries, the twists, the banter, the touch of magic. It all works. I’m hooked and really hope there are more books coming soon!
Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst, has always scorned the supernatural that is until a head injury left him with the unnerving ability to see visions through touch. Though he loathes the curse, it’s proven invaluable in solving murder investigations alongside Miss Matilda Wren. When Hadrian’s mother hires Tilda to investigate a medium who claims she can contact her late son Gabriel, Tilda and Hadrian are drawn into a deadly game. Mediums across London are falling victim to the “Levitation Killer” The third book in the series & yes it could easily be read on its own, I have to read a series in order as I love how the characters develop & how relationships deepen & grow & this series is no exception. I love both Tilda & Hadrian they compliment each other & she takes the lead in their investigations, even though his input is invaluable. An intriguing case & I was kept guessing until the end as to who was killing the mediums. A very well written engrossing murder mystery with a very, very slow burn romance. I look forward to the next book I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
The author did an excellent job with the characters and storyline of this novel. I really enjoyed reading it. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This series has become a "most read" for me. I love historical mysteries with a slow burn romantic subplot.
As any Victorian-era series should, this book deals with the spiritualism movement and mediums. MMC Hadrian's mother employs FMC Tilda to investigate whether the medium she wants to visit is legitimate. When a murderer targets the mediums, our sleuthing duo investigate.
The added layer of this is that Hadrian's ability to see the past when he touches people or objects might not be unique to him. It's an interesting addition to the story and the door is open for more developments in this area. It's an interesting twist!
The will they/won't they is so good here and I like that the relationship is complicated by a class different and staunch opposition to marriage on the female lead's part. We're still peeling back the onion on the backstories of each main character, so we don't know why Tilda is opposed to marriage. There's a great line from Hadrian's mother which is followed by an interaction which is followed by two interactions with police detectives (one Scotland Yard, one Metropolitan Police) that point to things getting more complicated in future books.
The class difference between the characters is on display again as Tilda has to explain her financial situation time and again. Hadrian is still having trouble understanding just how tough her financial situation is, but he's trying.
I'm delighted that Darcy Burke seems to be releasing these books rapidly. I can't wait for the next!
Reviews are for readers. I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book, the mystery and engaging and kept me wanting to read, however there was lots of different characters that made it a little hard to care about any of them, and even why the killer committed the crimes was a bit of a let down. Love the focus on Hadrians ability and a bit more behind that. However the slow burn is a bit too slow for me, I get the difficulty for Wren and Raven in their classes and their different wants in life, but I needed a bit more between them to keep things engaging.
Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion....
I am loving this series. I quite enjoy Raven and Wren's dynamic together as friends, and investigators, with that underlying spark of growing awareness, attraction, and wanting. But this is tempered by each of their fears and uncertainty of breaching those barriers, and perhaps ruining the accord and friendship they have found. This is a delicious slow burn romance, which is the warm oozy sweet centre of the delicious chocolate that is the Victorian murder mystery around it.
In this one, Tilda Wren's services are hired by Hadrian Beckett's mother, the Countess of Ravenhurst. In her grief over the loss of her youngest son, a soldier, she is seeking to connect with him again with the aid of a medium. Spiritualism is a growing movement, and one that Hadrian is quite skeptical of, despite his own undeniable experience with the paranormal, and he is conflicted because of his own secrets and fears, being confronted again by his own grief over the loss of his brother, and anger that his mother may be duped and hurt. Tilda is of a more open mind as they embark with the countess into the world of seances, mediums, and spiritualism.
But then as mediums of the spiritualism society they are introduced to start getting murdered, Raven and Wren become embroiled in the murder investigation as well.
This explores the Victorian movement of Spiritualism, as well as moves along the storyline of Raven's paranormal ability, and how he feels about it. Tilda Wren is the sole person he has trusted with his secret so far, and her support of him has become a strong part of their bond. But this story forces Raven to consider other aspects of his ability and how it fits into his life.
This continues to be a very slow burn series, with Tilda and Raven having taken a few steps back, with Tilda reaffirming to Raven her desire to not marry and continue her pursuit of her career, and Raven wanting to continue their friendship, so respectful of the boundaries Tilda has set. But both secretly questioning if perhaps they could be more, but also not wanting to threaten a loss to their friendship - some delicious tension alluded to frequently there (and one I can empathize with). There continues to be the class difference as well, with Raven's mother stating the obvious to Ravens, and discouraging any idea of a relationship with Tilda besides a casual friendship. Also, Tilda is an anomaly of her time as well, a young woman pursuing a career and one in investigation as well. She is good at her job but disregarded because of her status and gender - Raven is helpful in partnership with her because he helps to overcome barriers because of his status, wealth, and gender. But while Tilda and her successes have earned her the regard and respect of some of her peers, others still look askance at her, and not take her seriously, or her involvement has to be off the books, and unacknowledged officially.
Wonderful slow burn historical mystery series with great characters, a touch of the paranormal, with great historical context. I do love Tilda and Hadrian, and their growing friendship, respect, and support for each other, but I also love the supporting cast of characters as well, and I do wonder about if some introduced in book 3 will show up again, especially those who can maybe help Hadrian understand his own abilities better. I do also sincerely hope when Wren and Raven do come together that what is a slow burn becomes a hot roaring fire! I love a friends to lovers story....
Side note, I really like the cover art for these stories. This one was a slow start for me, because I looked at the blub for the next book and it looked like the relationship between Raven and Wren had NOT advanced so I was not nearly as invested. Don't let that stop you! This book drops right into the next one, so we don't have months apart- whew!
It also didn't prick my interest to be reading about the séance thing, but I have to say the author brought the story around and it became more interesting, especially when they are trusting each other, dealing honestly (but not touching the attraction). I had 10 highlights, so some things were very well done but mostly after the middle of the story.
Highlights & Spoilers:
I appreciate the compassion demonstrated: "Hadrian met Tilda’s gaze across the coach. It suddenly seemed as though it didn’t matter whether the medium was authentic or not. He wasn’t sure his mother cared. And yet, she’d hired Tilda and asked her to continue her investigation. They would forge onward."
As they attend: Hawkins’s eyes opened. “The circle has been broken.” He looked to Tilda. “You did not wish to speak with your father?” “No. My apologies for ending the séance so abruptly, but I was not prepared for that. I did not realize spirits would come and speak to anyone in the circle.” “Oh yes, that happens sometimes. I’m sorry for your discomfort,” Hawkins said kindly. “I understand that it can be overwhelming. We can try again next time when you are prepared.” The hell they would. (HA!)
Raven is so patient with Tilda:
“Forgive me for ruining the séance.” “You did nothing of the kind.” Hawkins gave her an encouraging smile. “I hope you’ll stay for dinner. Crocker is pouring wine. That may settle your nerves.” He departed, and Tilda resisted the urge to glower after him. “I do not have nerves,” she grumbled. “Would you care for wine anyway?” Hadrian asked. “I suppose.”
It was weird for Mallory to go from SO arrogant to this in such a short time: “You and Miss Wren appear to care deeply for one another,” Mallory observed. “You hail from completely different classes. Are you able to wed her?” Able. As if there were something that would forbid Hadrian from doing so. “I can do as I bloody well please.” Mallory laughed softly, his lip curling as he finished. “Of course you can. You’re an earl. I shall congratulate you now then.”
And are these hints for them moving forward together??? They are universal truths “Sometimes people aren’t able to confront difficulty. ---------- “Fear keeps us in check,” he said softly. “And perhaps from pursuing the truth or even happiness.”
I appreciate his forthrightness and it melts Tildas heart: “You have been incredibly supportive and considerate,” Hadrian said. “I am fortunate to have someone with whom I could share this distressing malady. Someone who has not judged me or been frightened of me. Someone without whose encouragement and support, I would have surely been lost.”
This is the 3rd book in the Raven and Wren series and it did not disappoint. I continue to enjoy how well they work together and respect one another. Hadrian respect of Matilda is front and center in this book and I loved it. He respects her knowledge and ability to investigate but he also respects her as a person and does not push her further romantically allowing and respecting her boundaries she puts in place. You can tell from their conversations she likes her a person (when they discuss her maid for example) Matilda is a very quick thinker on her feet when investigating and knows when to play the "Earl" card showing how smart she is. I also like that I wouldn't say this is a cozy mystery but it is not explicit. I thought the mystery was really interesting, I did not guess who it was at all in this one.
April 1868 Mother of Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst employs Matilda Wren to investigate medium Mrs Deborah Frost of the London Spiritualism Society. Is she a genuine medium or a fraud. Soon mediums are being killed. Who will be next and why. What of Becket's secret gift, or is it a curse. An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable and interesting characters. With its amiable supporting cast. Another good addition to this enjoyable series. An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A few things are needed. There is chemistry. There has to some action. Or at least a conversation around inaction. This plot point didn’t move along very well in this book. Don’t get me wrong. Her other covers look like she is more accustomed to the bodice ripper; don’t get me wrong as I’m not interested in that level of detail, but….well….nothing more than the brush of a hand and wondering from both sides if they will share a carriage seat? It is a weird counterpoint in books both 2 and 3 that the cases involve a fair amount of salacious detail to solve them. Also…just a ton of characters here that don’t stand out and are hard to keep straight. A year before the next.
Séances and murder make for a captivating and thrilling mystery.
I was drawn in by the plot. Hadrien was very skeptical of the mediums right off the bat, and Tilda would, every once in a while, remind him to keep an open mind, especially considering Hadrian's own gift. I liked the balanced view that she brought to her investigation. Hadrian and Tilda had an abundance of strings to tug and each one led down an interesting path. The evidence was revealed gradually, at just the right pace, and kept my interest thoroughly piqued.
Hadrien's slowly evolving ability brought an extra edge, especially when you take into account everything that was revealed about the spiritualists and their organization. Tilda and Hadrian's friendship is firmly back on track and they work extremely well together. So, still not a romance. The ending definitely left me wanting more of these two and their investigative prowess.
If you like your historical fiction with murder and suspense and a touch of the paranormal, then this is for you. I’ve been enjoying this series a lot so far. This book can be read on its own, but I think it’s worth reading them in order.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was invested in this book before I even cracked the covers open. The ending of the previous one hooked me and had me salivating to find out more. As it was, I was so thoroughly caught up in this story that I only got it half right, and completely missed the entire other half of the solution. I’m in awe of Tilda’s investigative skills and I’m utterly fascinated by all the new facets of Hadrian’s ability that he’s discovering. I love that while Hadrian’s gift/curse is helpful during their investigations, it’s not a crutch, it’s not the ultimate problem solver, and it’s just as likely to produce a fat shiny red herring as it is to give them valuable insight. I adore seeing that Tilda’s talents are being more widely recognized and appreciated. Though, the twist to close out this book has left me howling: “how can you leave us there?!” I need the next book in the series immediately, if not sooner. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book through NetGalley.
This murder mystery is another page turner, with a lot of suspects and a surprise ending. Neither Tilda or Hadrian can forget their electrifying kiss, but fearing the loss of her independence if she would marry, she has pushed Hadrian into the friend zone- best friend, but not "special" friend- and fearing losing her, Hadrian has gone along with it. Hadrian's mother asks Tilda to investigate the medium that she hopes can communicate with her youngest son, Gabriel, who died from cholera in India 5 years prior. But the investigation turns into a murder and then a serial killer. And someone dares to send her a threatening letter as their investigation continues. They face danger, but with Hadrian's power and Tilda's quick intuitive mind, they find the killer. Really like this series.
I was gifted with an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher via NetGalley.com. This is my honest, unbiased and voluntary review.
What an intriguing investigation for Matilda Wren and Hadrian Lord Ravenhurst. It all starts when Hadrian’s mother wants Tilda to find out whether a medium is real or fake. From there it leads to a sensational case involving murder and so much more. I really enjoy this series and I enjoyed this book especially so. What fun to revisit that time when spiritualism was all the rage. How clever these mediums were to convince their clients that their gifts were real. I do hope that our two main characters will continue to build their relationship and see what’s plain as day to the rest of us. A surprise twist involving one of the mediums and a link to the special talent that Hadrian has. Omg what an ending! I eagerly await the next adventure for Raven and Wren!!.

Darcy is a good storyteller and I enjoy her books very much. This series is very good. This was another good clean book, a great mystery. The characters are interesting and engaging. I sincerely hope that Hadrian and Tilda give in to their feelings for each other.
It is a good mystery. The solution is very clever. And, now, Ravenhurst knows a little more about himself and his special talent. The mediums were generally horrible charlatans who prayed on people during their grief. But. the author recognized something very important about grief and shared it well.
Someone with grief is not necessarily looking to have the grief completely relieved. Sometimes grief just needs something, or someone, to lean on. By allowing that Ravenhurst’s mother needed to feel her youngest son’s comfort after death, even if it weren’t really coming from her dead son, the author recognized grief isn’t a fact to prove or disprove. There are those that would absolutely need their loved one’s body to rise from the dead, and tell them they are fine, before feeling even the slightest relief. There are also those that simply want to sense the comfort of their loved one wherever we do after death. If spiritualism helps, it may be the perfect solution. The problem comes, as it did in the book, when “spiritualists” abuse their relationship with the grieved in order to extract payment, of whatever type, for themselves. This book addressed that very well.
This series is fun for me since the rich wealthy man is the sidekick in this investigative team. Tilda leads the charge and Hadrian is just so happy to be there. I look forward to more development of his “curse” and him learning how to use it.
Sometimes the spiritualist movement element in a historical mystery is repetitive, but it was well done here as it ties in the Hadrian’s ability. I hope we see Captain Vale again. I just struggled with the pacing and an underdeveloped villain.
I’m always a sucker when he falls first. I had hoped to see Tilda bend a little, at least in her own mind, especially with both of them thinking about it so much. Her reasons are a little weak for someone so smart. If we’re strung along with no romantic development, I’ll be disappointed. Fingers crossed she starts to consider him in book 4 and it’s just not Hadrian being jealous.
Darcy Burke delivers another spellbinding tale in A Whisper and a Curse, the third installment of her Raven and Wrath series. I am loving the blend of historical mystery and paranormal intrigue in the series and this one adds even more with the addition of the spiritual world of mediums.
Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst, has always dismissed the supernatural—until a head injury grants him the unnerving power to see visions through touch. Though he despises his curse, it is how he meets Miss Matilda Wren and they become a team investigating murder mysteries, his “gift” becomes invaluable in solving cases.
Hadrian’s mother seeks out Tilda to investigate a medium who claims to communicate with her deceased son. As they delve deeper, they become ensnared in a perilous situation. Across London, mediums are being targeted by the "Levitation Killer," and it isn’t long before the killer sets their sights on Tilda. Initially, Tilda is tasked with determining the medium's legitimacy, but the murder of a medium soon thrusts them into the hazardous realm of the Spiritual Society.
Once again, this dynamic duo are pulled into solving a string of murders. Hadrian hasn’t come to terms with his ability, and is still trying to understand if there are others with the same skills. Regardless, he must embrace the visions he loathes to keep Tilda safe and solve the case. As they investigate, much comes to light regarding the power of seeing visions that enlightens him about his abilities but so many unanswered questions remain.
Hadrian and Tilda attend a séance with his mother, to contact Hadrian’s deceased brother. The séance is unsettling, especially for the Hadrian, who is skeptical of the supernatural and is determined to see if there is any validity to the medium or its all smoke and mirrors.
Amidst the chaos, Hadrian learns to value his gift and his growing affection for Tilda. Though frustrated by Tilda’s reluctance to admit her feelings, both instinctively protect each other during perilous moments. I had been so hoping that Tilda would consider the possibility of more with Hadrian, surprised but not really that his mother thinks she is beneath his attentions, but am still holding out that she will reconsider. It is obvious Hadrian is struggling with his feelings for her.
In this thrilling tale with two ruthless killers, the story reveals the depths of Hadrian’s feelings, challenging Tilda’s resolve never to marry. There is so much going on in this story—blackmail, fraud, deception, and multiple murders. The intrigue and danger had me holding my breath more than once. With nonstop action and emotional depth, I absolutely love the author's captivating writing style in crafting these mysteries.
I love Darcy Burke's ability to write stories with intricate plot development and rich character portrayals. Darcy Burke’s writing not only entertains but kept me, eagerly turning the pages, yearning to uncover the intertwining fates of Hadrian and Tilda. I'm already anticipating the next installment in this enthralling series.

Darcy Burke has just released book three of her Raven and Wren series entitled “Whisper and a Curse”. Murder, mayhem, blackmail, tables that bump, and cold breezes that blow are all combined to provide Tilda and Hadrian their next investigation. “A Whisper and a Curse has our intrepid duo lurking about at seances, interviewing mediums, and checking out London’s newest fad, spiritualism. Are these mediums really communicating with the spirit realm and the ton’s deceased loved ones? Hadrian’s mother has hired Tilda to answer these questions. Tilda Wren and Hadrian, Lord Ravenhurst, make a great team, they are both strong, likable characters. Tilda is smart, exceptionally insightful, observant, and intuitive. She is a great investigator and can think on her feet. Tilda is also ahead of her time and in a profession dominated by men, private investigation. I really enjoy reading a story with a strong, unapologetic female lead. Tilda has opened her own investigation services against the odds. I also like Hadrian. Even though he is a born and bred noble, he respects Tilda and admires her strengths as an investigator. He is not ashamed to admit he is the assistant. Hadrian has an ability that has aided in their investigations, when he touches a person or an object, he sees memories. These memories have helped them in their investigations. As Tilda and Hadrian collect information, the spiritual mediums are murdered one at a time and left in a position that appears they are levitating. This is a great story that combines a murder mystery with supernatural elements. The elements are blended seamlessly in this page turner set in the Victorian era. In book three of the series we see Hadrian learning to accept his ability as a gift and gaining more control over it. We see the friendship between Tilda and Hadrian strengthening. There are also cracks in Tilda’s resolve to remain in the realm of friendship. Their touches are sparking desire. Both yearn for the other when they are apart. Hadrian has developed a deep sense of protectiveness when Tilda is near. There are many secondary characters that add to the flow of the story. Tilda’s grandmother, Hadrian’s mother, Scotland Yard’s Teague, and the household servants just to name a handful. And of course the story has a reporter with flashy pants! This world has been carefully built and maintained by Ms. Burke. As a reader, I wanted to discover all this world had to offer as I turned the pages. A great plot within a well paced storyline. Unforgettable characters that have me wondering what case they are going to stumble on next. I recommend “A Whisper and a Curse.”.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review, my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Book three in the Raven and Wren series, A Whisper and a Curse continues the association of the Earl of Ravenswood, Hadrian Becket and Matilda Wren, private investigator as Hadrian’s mother has acquired Tilda’s services, to discover whether the medium she has hired to connect with her deceased son is legitimate. Hadrian, who is less than impressed by this, even though he has acquired ‘special powers’ after a head injury, is concerned this mother will be badly distressed if she discovers the medium, Mrs Frost, is a charlatan. The séance is conducted to strict rules, and even though she failed to contact her dead son, remaining somewhat sceptical, the Countess is willing to keep trying. After the séance, Hadrian is absolutely convinced trickery is involved and Tilda is simply gathering information. When Mrs Frost is found dead in a most dramatic fashion, Tilda and Hadrian find themselves becoming involved in a very dangerous situation and one which will lead them to investigating the recently formed London Spiritualist Society and their charismatic leader. Another medium is murdered and then another in the same fashion, leading the papers to coin the phrase the Levitation Killer. As Tilda and Hadrian try to find the link to lead them to the killer, Hadrian is also learning a lot more about his gift or curse and beginning to understand that is may not be as fearful as he first thought. But there is one issue that keeps troubling both Hadrian and Tilda, and that is the kiss shared at the end of their last case. While they eventually become easy with one another once again, Tilda realises she needs to decide what she wants in their relationship; Hadrian already knows what he wants and that is Tilda. After a successful completion to the case, all-be-it a slightly sad one, Hadrian and Tilda are enjoying a delightful afternoon tea when the door is flung open and a man from Scotland Yard appears with a request for Tilda which will make a very exciting book four in the series. Once again Darcy Burke has done her research into the world of Victorian Spiritualism and Mediums which developed into a subculture during the 1850’s, catching many innocent people with their trickery. The Research notes at the conclusion of the book are very well worth the read as they flesh out what was a most lucrative business of spiritualism for many years. not just in England, but the USA and Europe.
I have read all the books in this series and enjoyed then all. This one was very exciting and hard to put down. This series is best read in order as each book has information about Hadrin and Tilda. Tilda is the daughter of a Sargent in the London Police dept. He was killed ten years ago in the line of duty. Hadrin Becket is the Earl of Ravenhurst. Hadrin was attacked and suffered a concussion and knife wounds. He was able to take a ring off the person and when he put it on, he saw visions of that person. Now when he touches people with his bare hand, he can see their memories. Tilda is a private investigator. Hadrin has been very helpful with his visions helping her solve cases. They enjoy each other company and working together. When Hadrin mother hires Tilda to check out the London Spiritualism Society he is upset. She wants to visit a medium and talk to his brother, who died while abroad. Hadrin doesn’t want her hurt and they go with her only for the medium to be found dead the next day! She was hung in a very upsetting way. Hadrin and Tida are drawn into the investigation due to his mother's just see her. As they research the society and other mediums an evil plot starts to show as more people from the society are murdered. With many twists and turns and tons of unforeseen danger our couple is now in the eyesight of the killer or killers? Working with Detective Inspector Teague again they close in on who they think is the killer. Both Hadrin and Tilda have been attractive to the other since they first meet. Both work at not showing their feelings. There was a kiss in the last book, that is still on both their minds. Tilda never wanted to marry but can’t hide her feelings and worry about Hadrin and him her. This is a very fast paced story with lots of twist and turns. I love the stories but really wish this couple would move on. Either admitting their feelings or decide to just be friends. The class difference is a problem but as they say “The Heart wants what the Heart wants”. We are given a hint what the next book will be about and let me tell you Hadrin is not going to be happy at all! I can’t wait. Grab this book or the first on and get started. You will love then am sure. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
An absolutely amazing mystery with a slow-burning (will it ever really happen) romance with private investigator Miss Matilda “Tilda” Wren and her assistant Lord Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst, beginning an investigation for his mother, Lady Ravenhurst, to determine the legitimacy of the spiritual mediums associated with the London Spiritualism Society who she had contacted to perform a séance in order to speak with her deceased son Captain Gabriel Becket. However, just as soon as the investigation begins, one of the mediums is found murdered and then another and soon Tilda and Ravenhurst find themselves investigating a murder case involving some very sketchy happenings and to people with very similar abilities as Ravenhurst possesses. This book is amazing because the author is able to lead the reader along on a long, windy investigation that takes many twists and turns but never allows the reader to lose interest. Just entirely too many interesting angles going on. First, there is the murder investigation along with a blackmailing motive and a lover’s jealousy lead to keep the pages turning. Second, Ravenhurst’s memory reading ability gets more detailed and will be extremely helpful in the investigation while he gets answers and finds a common bond while investigating. Third, is Tilda’s and Ravenhurst’s denial of their love interest conflicting with their special friendship and their deep care for each other while their daily investigations bring them closer together. The romantic in me just screams for them to throw aside all the class restrictions and their so called restraints and declare their love for each other…but will it ever happen? This book brings out Ravenhurst’s protective side and Tilda’s caring side even more. Absolutely wonderful character development with these two and the murder mystery kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this series and I can’t wait for the next book…oh, I can only imagine how put out Ravenhurst is going to be!.

Having dived deep in the middle of this series, not having read what came before, I was surprised how much I connected to the leads instantly. A sweet underlying chemistry, sparked by the awkwardness of a kiss, and bound by an evergrowing deep affection, laces, this mystery focus tale, with a slow burn romance. Strengthened by this harmonious partnership that compliments their relationship and seems to bloom so brilliantly and effortlessly between them. Interwoven with a 'will they, won't they, admit they may want more" love, a mystery is born to unpick and untangle. Forcing our duo to face some personal home truths, painful memories and unsettling insecurities that really make you come to care for the pair as they struggle to put themselves on even footing. With séances, suspicious mediums and the allure of supernatural intrigue to explore... as murder seems to quickly dog their every step...really hypes up the urgency to follow each thread and make you want to hunt out those elusive answers always just out of reach. I enjoyed this engaging trail of 'follow the clues', as it focuses upon their journey to uncover the secrets at the London Spiritualism Society and solve the murders that are plaguing them. The fact they are from different classes, adds an extra layer to the drama that unfolds beyond the mystery we become glued too as unexpected yet perfect pairing in lady investigator, Tilda and her charming sidekick, vision seeing Earl, Hadrian, work seamlessly together to solve one case distorted by so much more than the not so simple request put before them from the start. . A fun read, with a clever murder mystery to unravel, secrets to uncover and a whole host of characters to pull you in and keep you reading! As the leads so effortlessly wrap themselves around you and will have me coming back for more!

A Whisper and a Curse by Darcy Burke Raven & Wren #3
Excellent addition to a delightful series that stars a female investigator and a lord that assists her in solving murders ~ Can’t wait to find out what will happen in the next book!
What I liked: * Miss Matilda “Tilda” Wren: mid-twenties, lives with her grandmother, father was a detective and taught her his skills, caring, responsible, frugal, inquisitive, bright, capable, marriage-averse…or has been, rather intrigued with Hadrian * Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst: early-thirties, wealthy, paranormal psychometry ability post near-death experience, assists Tilda in some of her investigations, drawn to and intrigued by Tilda, needs to marry in his social group…or does he? * Detective Inspector Samuel Teague: appreciates Tilda’s abilities and shares what he can with her but can’t hire her * The plot that centers around a case to prove or disprove the validity of spiritualism and then ends up with murders to solve * Following the clues with Tilda & Hadrian * Some of the supporting characters that I wouldn’t mind seeing again…and the addition of a few more in this book * That the writing felt “of the period” as did the characters dialogue and behavior * The descriptions that engaged all of my senses * The slow growth of the potential relationship between Raven & Wren * The way Tilda’s household has more household help after each case is solved * Wondering if/when Tilda & Hadrian will make a move and if Inspector Maxwell will throw a wrench in the relationship that may be developing * All of it except…
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * The twisted mind that must have existed to resort to murder

Thank you to the author, Oliver Heber, NetGalley and Booksprout for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Absolutely loving this series! (Is this connected to the fact that we only get 6-episode seasons of Miss Scarlet? Maaaaaybe...it's probably not not connected--I mean, six episodes???)
Tilda and Hadrian are back with a mystery that is perhaps their most personal yet when Hadrian's mother hires Tilda to discover whether or not the medium she's hoping will connect her to her deceased son (Hadrian's younger brother) can really do what she promises. Hadrian is more than skeptical that the London Spiritualist Society is anything other than a scam, though Tilda is determined to keep an open mind as they begins their investigation.
Of course once our two favorite investigators are involved, mediums across London start dying in highly suspicious ways...
I'd read some in the past about the spiritualist movement and early mediums, so I found the focus of this book's plot particularly interesting. I loved tagging along with our protagonists as they attended séances, talked to mediums, and investigated the Society. The murders were a bit OTT (especially with the staging of the crime scenes) but it absolutely fit with how the Society operated and the people that made up its membership.
I was hoping that we'd eventually get some kind of an explainer for Hadrian's "abilities," and this book didn't disappoint--he finally finds someone else who has similar skills and can give him some guidance. There is of course still a lot of unknowns there, but they--and we--got a bit more information about how it works and there is hope that Hadrian will be able to hone his skills a bit more as he continues to use it in the future.
And of course we got a bit closer to what I'm really hoping for here--an actual friends-to-lovers scenario! The kiss they shared in the last book was slightly obsessed on here by both of our MCs, and I may or may not have been chanting, just kiss again, already! while I read. ;)
Can't wait for the next installment--the teaser blurb sounds so good!
Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This series is a murder mystery slow burn romance and although I personally wish the romance was moving along faster than it is, I still find these books intriguing and engaging.
Book number 3 has proven to be just as good as its predecessors.
Tilda is hired by Lady Ravenhurst, Hadrian's mother, to investigate a spiritualist that claims she can connect with the afterlife. Specifically Lady Ravenhurt's late son. Lady Ravenhurst would love to connect with her son but she has doubts of the woman's abilities. She plans on meeting with Mrs Frost to conduct a seance and asks Hadrian and Tilda to join her.
Hadrian of course is very skeptical of those who claim they have paranormal gifts. It is ironic as he himself has a special gift that he is grappling with but Tilda encourages him to be open minded so they join Lady Ravenhurst who only becomes a true believer after the visit.
After visiting Mrs Frost with Tilda and Hadrian they are shocked to find out that she has died and not naturally. She was found in a manner to appear as though she were levitating. This is no coincidence as more mediums are found dead and in the exact same method - this is when the Levitating Killer is "born".
As things progress with our murder mystery and our fantastic duo continue working together to unearth the killer, there are more complications and thrilling twists that arise...
This series is great, it really leaves you wanting more and looking forward to the next book because there really is so much to it. As much as it involves mysteries, murder, and the paranormal there is something else building along all this. Hadrian and Tilda are good friends, 2 people who respect one another and work with each other but underneath all that, there is definitely more and I'm looking forward to that.
I received an ARC - all opinions expressed are my own.
Hadrian Becket, the Earl of Ravenhurst and Miss Matilda Wren aka Tilda are on another case! This one involves mediums and a so called Spiritual Society! Hadrians mother invited Hadrian and Tilda to participate in a seance to contact Hadrian’s baby brother who is deceased and died in India! The seance is very disturbing for all involved especially Hadrian with his own special gift he is beyond skeptical and considers it a farce! Tilda is hired to verify the authenticity of the medium not to much afterwards one of the mediums is found hung in a manner that definitely spikes of murder! This alarming event keeps happening and drawing Hadrian and Tilda deeper into the society and lives of the remaining mediums! They also find their esteemed leader of the society advises the females to sleep their way to the premier status with him! Hadrian makes several critical discoveries that aide in a greater acceptance of his gift and his growing feelings for Tilda! Tilda I get very frustrated with as again when their lives are endangered when getting so very close to the truth and the murderer! Tilda knows she cares deeply for Hadrian when both their lives are in danger they immediately move to protect each other! In this story others who are truly gifted “see” how Hadrian really feels and vows to keep his secrets! Tilda fights her feelings and keep saying she will never marry! She will never find Hadrian equal as a partner or a spouse! Hopefully this next story will also reveal how deep her feelings truly are! Also what is more important when they have faced murderous villains multiple times! This story has nonstop action with two killers without a conscience and no remorse! Bravo! Outstanding! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased opinion!
Being the third installment of the Raven & Wren series, this story is taking place, as expected and announced in the previous book, a few weeks after the second one fished. So, the “incident in the carriage” is still very much on the mind of the main characters and we get to participate in their thoughts on this matter. There is a lot of contemplating on both sides. As well as the mentioning of Hadrian’s headache. It is the subject of Tilda’s apprehension on nearly each page. It turns out that this is also closely related to the plot of the mystery, but really, it is quite a lot of concern. Let’s hope, these lavender sachets will be stored in the carriage and do their job. The mystery is not easy to guess and deals with a context that Is not often bridged in Regencies- the mediums and the world of spiritualism. Also, we get to know Hadrian’s mother and her stance on Tilda a bit closer. The read is entertaining and cozy, with the growing camaraderie adding to the plot as a welcome respite. The secondary characters are drawn in a pleasant way that does not clutter up the story and provides rather a vivid background to the main story. It would be nice to meet Captain Owen again, as he would fit nicely in the cozy bond of the main characters. The end of the story, though… makes you anticipate the next installment all the more! Can’t wait to see how this thread is woven into the different aspects of the series.
