Really, I can't believe how well Pandora Hearts progresses from volume to volume. I expected the story to start dwindling a little at this point from lack of character development or poor interaction with others, but really everything keeps building up to create a phenomenal plot with meaningful and wonderfully built characters.

Although there was some things in this volume that weren't revealed that I would have liked to see, there was plenty of character development and plot structure revealed that kept me from losing too much of my patience. Some of the plot twists were obvious, but others gave me a tingle of excitement and delight, despite the gore involved in the scenes. In the end, the story rounded out nicely to the end of the manga, giving just enough of a cliff hanger to warrant buying the next volume, but just enough information to keep the reader from losing their mind.

Each character seems to develop something unseen in previous volumes. Even the minor characters show bits and pieces of their characteristics that make them fuller and far more believable than even the volume before. Reim Lunettes, who I figured for a minor, unimportant character with a name, makes a much heftier appearance in this volume and shows that he's not just a name and a face. Major characters, such as Oz, even get an interesting twist in their personality. Odd, defining moments for characters emerge from the pages, especially for Gilbert, who gets more and more delightfully heavy as the story goes on.

I can't wait for the next volume to come in (though I've already read the chapters online). To be able to read the next four chapters in the actual manga form with be such a delight.

The series really finds its footing here; the narration is much more consistent in spite of the somewhat convoluted timeline and relationships between the characters. It is both a sign of Mochizuki's development and growth and laying of good foundations paying off.

With the help of Jack, Oz finds out what happened 100 years ago, in the tragedy of Sablier. Apparently Gil, Vincent and Alice are people from back then and the deeper Oz goes into the memories, the more disturbing images he finds. One of them being the murderer of the human we now call Alice.

We’re still not sure of who was the responsible for all the killing, but perhaps it was a young, disturbed, Vincent, who was covered in blood and with a pair of scissors in his hands.

Moving on, Oz saves Alice and tells her that being a chain or a human doesn’t matter as long as she remains being herself. Then, Jack Vessalius, the so called hero, kind of takes control of Oz’ body and tells everybody that they have to stop the Baskervilles, who want to provoke another catastrophe just like before.

Anyway, what I liked about this volume was seeing those hints Jun gave us all the time. And of course, Oz protecting Alice in his own way. He may not have powers like the rest, but I think he’s the only one who truly loves her despite her flaws.

Still, I have a complicated relationship with Jack because I kinda love him for being good to Alice, yet I kinda hate him for making everything more complicated than it already is. The dude knows the true identities of everyone yet he remains silent for the time being.

Though this is a re-read for me, I can’t wait to read the next volume, where we see Ada and a couple of new characters!

This volume contains Retrace 19 – 22.

Read volumes 1-5
First read, 2009

First reread, I'm so not ready, and I can't believe it's been 9 years since the last chapter came out 🥲 Mochizuki is not simply one of my favourite writers, she's one my favourite storytellers, and that's a subtle distinction I don't give easily.

I was following along with the publication during my teenage years, basically growing up with this story making it oh so, so very important to me. Which is why I don't understand why I haven't done a rr before now. That said, I have already cried twice during chapter 1. Is anyone surprised? I'm not. First time was at the narration at the beginning as it caught me off guard - I had forgotten that's how we begin, my heart can't take it; and then again when Oz and Gilbert find the grave 🥲

All my notes are just me trying to recall all the details, and tbf I'm surprised so much is coming back to me as I read. So many details and foreshadowing. So yummy. So sad.

The way Mochizuki is juggling all these characters and all these elements is immensely satisfying. The way she directs your attention toward one, false, direction while also showing you the truth. Amazing 10/10

Some thoughts and things:

Alice. Alice is an icon. She is the moment. I love her so much. The first time we see past ‘Alice’ with Cheshire is another time I got teary eyed. And Alice with the stuffed rabbit… “Alice's existence is like the sun… I guess? She cries when she wants to, gets mad when she wants to, and is always true to her feelings.” 😭 in comparison then there's Oz, my poor neglected child…

I don't think I had fully realised how much shit house Nightray is eating lol there's Gilbert working as a spy, Vincent working for the Baskervilles, and then all the things that will happen later 😭 rip house Nightray

The chills I got when they first mentione the Tragedy of Sablier??? All the things I immediately recalled and made me sad and I had to sit down with my thoughts for a while

The way I started crying when I remembered (how did I forget this, hello??) the stuffed rabbit's name… I can't

Jack saying “This is our first time meeting each other face-to-face like this, isn't it… Oz?” is diabolical. 'like this’? 'Oz?’ ?? Mochizuki 🙃

The cover of volume five and all I can look at are the damn scissors…. I hate them, so much. And at the same time, the story is well woven around them, and around Vincent. And then the inside art of Vincent with the two stuffed rabbits and the scissors…. The scissors plunged into the black rabbit fuck

Mycket avslöjanden och den har vol hade en bra takt och den hanterade lagom mycket saker. Det blev aldrig tråkigt men det var heller inte så mycket att det blev svårt att hålla reda på allt som det enkelt kan bli med manga.

You know how I said I was going to try to avoid superlatives so that I could use them later? I think I'm going to start using a few now.

This volume is stunning!! I'll try to avoid spoilers but I'm not sure I'll be able to do that and make this review coherent.

As I was saying, stunning!! The most mind-bending, mind-blowing, just heart-breaking--are there any other hypenated words that apply? Oh, who knows, let's move on to the story.

We start with Oz wandering through one of Alice's memories (this is a continuation of the previous volume). Now, keep in mind, everything in Cheshire's Lair is twisted. The memories aren't quite right. But still, we see Oz wandering through a massacre. And a character he knows is there, going insane. I mean, total breakdown/psychosis here. And pretty scissors.

In an earlier volume, Break hinted at the destructive nature of extreme loyalty. He warned Gil against it. The beginning of this volume brings back that theme and shows the consequences of it. (Or at least, we think it does. Does it?)

We also get a reminder of time, and that Oz doesn't have forever to figure out what's going on. This is compounded by the horrors he sees, one of which reaches deep into his heart (and at the same time the incuse moves forward, too).

And all this happens in the first frickin' chapter.

In fact, time is a factor in many of the scenes in this volume. It binds Jack as much as Oz, and time is the gap they can't seem to bridge. (It brings to mind the White Rabbit in Carroll's Alice always exclaiming that he's late.)

The rest of the volume is spent dealing with the consequences of what they found. That's one of the things I love so far about this series: that there are consequences to actions taken. There's rarely an easy way out for anything. In fact, when Oz and Alice leave Cheshire's Lair, they end up in an even worse situation, if you can believe that. And in spite of all the revelations, it definitely doesn't feel like Oz is getting any closer to the truth he needs to find.

However, that frustration is off-set by all the things we do learn, or think we learn. Not to mention Break. Have I mentioned him yet? I have? Well, I'll mention him again. XD

I looooooved him in this chapter. He's become my favorite out of the whole group so far. I think the moment I was finally won over was the moment he showed so much concern for Sharon, the young daughter of the family that took him in. He completely shifted from the crazy Hatter to a character I was hoping I'd see. In fact, I'm hoping to see a lot more of that side of Break in the future.

Vincent is also introduced more fully in this volume. The similarities between Break and him are interesting, though I very much prefer Break. Vincent seems to be missing more cards in his deck. Plus, he doesn't seem to have any strong moral sense guiding him, whereas there are glimpses of that in the fantastic Break.

Anyway, if I say much more, I'm going to give away a large portion of the plot.

Highlights:

* Oz in a trance in the Cheshire's Lair and how he reacted after he came out of it.

* Alice looking vulnerable in Oz's arms.

* Break's chain.

* Jack's possession of Oz.

* Break's devotion to Sharon. (I know I've already mentioned that, but it really made me smile.)

* Oz having tea with Break.

One final note: it was at this point in the series that I began to really examine the pictures. So, if you're reading it for the first time, I recommend slowing down and really letting the images sink in. This is some very tight writing/drawing; a lot of information can get packed into scenes that don't look like they're all that important.

Next time, volume #6.

Oz, Alice, Gilbert, and Break continue their crazy odyssey through the Cheshire Cat’s mirror world, learning a little more of Alice’s past, catching a glimpse of a very young Vincent Nightray’s secret, and meeting a mysterious man like and unlike Oz. For this man is Jack Vesalius and he has a startling revelation to make about the Baskervilles and their leader, Glen.

Chaotic and mad as a dream, yet told in an exquisite art style, everyone remains enigmatic, while showing a little more of themselves. Oz, Alice, and Gil’s relationship deepens while Break and Vincent’s adversity grows, along with a sense of Vincent playing several sides against each other. Jack Vesalius makes his presence known as a hero from long ago, yet many mysteries surround him as they do Alice, Oz, and Gilbert. A lot was happening at once and it was hard to keep up with. At the same time, this book was exciting, engaging, and a treat to look at, leaving me wanting more. For all of these qualities, I give this four stars.

Oooooooh, so Cheshire was Alice's cat?

This was an interesting volume. Break is growing on me all the time, and I am really curious as to what the relationship between him and Sharon is. They seem very attached to one another.

Also, I did observe that Vincent has a broken chain on the cover, whereas Gil, Sharon, Break, and Oz all have connected chains on their covers. I remember Echo being a companion of Vincent, and she seemed to be a chain. However, she was apart from him, and she sorta takes care of him... maybe she somehow severed their contract? Freed him from it?

And can I ship Alice/Oz? Pleeeeeeeease?

I've noticed that almost all of my sentences in my Pandora Hearts "reviews" end in question marks. :D Not that I mind. Even though the mystery keeps getting murkier, I am starting to pick some things up.

2.5 aha moments.

I am actually writing up a list of characters and how they relate to one another. I've done this with one other book/series. ONE. But hey, I think it's helping out a small bit.

So, once again, I find myself mimicking Oz.

"...no...NO!!! I don't...understand anything yet! About Alice. About the tragedy of Sablier. And...about the identity of that man! I don't want to end without understanding any of that!"

But besides that, most of which I have a better idea of now that I've read a few more volumes, what is up with starting sentences and finishing--!! It's very -! It truly is...!

Review for complete series

I'd like to start by saying that with my two decades of manga reading, Pandora Hearts has recently earned its way to being one of the best manga series I've ever read - and to think I almost didn't pick it up!

There's actually a bit of a story to it: Pandora Hearts was being released around the time I knew I would be moving overseas. At the time, I had no idea how moving to the other side of the world would affect my manga buying. Also at that time, I was working at a comic store with staff discounts at my disposal and I never had to worry too much about picking up whatever I fancied. When I first saw Pandora Hearts, I thought the art looked beautiful and this just might be a really good manga. It also struck me as a manga series that could go on for quite a while [which was a reasonably accurate assumption as 24 volumes is not a length I could commit to lightly]. Not knowing how I'd get my hands on manga or how long this series would be let me to putting it back on the shelf. And I confess, it was filled with quite a bit of regret.

When I finally did move overseas - a family friend had a good bye gift. The shape was easy to discern: it was undoubtably a manga volume. While thankful for receiving a gift, I was also nervous: having worked in a comic store, I knew for sure: I either already own it or am not interested in it. In addition, the friend in question doesn't know the first thing about manga. To my surprise, it was the first volume of Pandora Hearts which was probably the single only volume she could have taken from the shelf that wasn't already in my possession and did interest me. How she managed to pick out that one I don't know, but it's a coincidence I feel thankful for and, in some cheesy way, made me feel like it was just meant to be that I read Pandora Hearts after all.

Fast forward to 2023, I finally found the time to read this 24 volume series and am absolutely delighted. My original observation remains: the art is absolutely stunning. With the exception of a oneshot debut work, it's hard to believe that this is quite close to being a beginner's work - you'd not believe it just looking at the first volume's art.

My other thoughts are largely around how hard it is to praise a story you think is so thoroughly good as this one is. It's not really a plot you can explain to someone, it's a story you have to read for yourself as even the latest volumes will throw some surprises at you. But I think, besides the art, what really contributes a lot to this work are the characters. Oz might be our main character, but we have a large cast and they are all lovingly created. There's hardly a character you won't be able to like in one way or another, even the most broken of them. It's quite a feat to create a story that makes you care and worry about almost every character's fate.

And worry you can indeed: it has light and beautiful moments, but it is essentially a dark tale and you'll constantly worry whether the characters will make it through. Needless to say, there are losses throughout the story. There are plenty of twists and turns, things that will surprise and shock you.

I will also add that the plot is complex and not always easy to follow. Some characters have multiple names - this becomes even more difficult for some characters who also have multiple personalities who also have multiple names. Not everything in the plot made entire sense to me - it's hard to say whether they were plot holes, not explained well enough or I was simply missing something - a reread might answer that. But regardless, when these moments arose, I decided to just go with the flow and it didn't disrupt my reading experience at all.

Besides a bit of confusion here and there, I can't fault this series with anything. The pacing is well done, the 24 volumes were neither too long nor too short [something I often complain about] and it wrapped up nicely. For such a dark read, there's also a lot of soft story telling which just concludes this with a very wholesome ending. There is close to no romance but I wasn't missing it [and I'm a big romance reader] - the friendships and bonds between the characters were absolutely beautiful even without much romance thrown in.

I'm glad I did read this series and it is definitely going down as one of my favourites. Highly recommended.

probably my favorite volume as of yet

.*.*.*.*4 stars roaming an abysmal city .*.*.*.*

THE ONLY REVIEW I TRUST IN THE GOODREADIAN WASTELAND:

chapter 19

i really love the Sablier city plot. if you know me, fucked up weird cities is my thing. dropping an entire city into an eldritch abyss is delicious and delectable.

baby vincent is so traumatized and unhinged but he smol and cute, feel bad for him

omg the dots are connecting in my head and it's insane! my current theory: baby gil and Vincent are from sablier, been dropped in the abyss passing 100 years, that might explain the memory loss and the terror gil experience in the real world.
i actually love this so muchhhhhh

o h m y g o d vincent killed alice? that little babyyy???

chapter 20

offf this chapter goes hard, destroying Alice because she's afraid of herself. i love this. Oz possessed by Cheshire is a freaky bitch indeed.

chapter 21

imagine the memory and spirit of your cat will literally annihilate anything to protect you and make you happy, be your lone knight. Cheshire is best boi. got me in the feels not gonna lie " Alice is Cheshire's precious."

i love how vincent and break, two freaks interact, like guys i think you're in the same leauge

chapter 22

can't take Jack/Oz's speech seriously with them white boy Bermuda shorts to be honest.

the scene where Oz draw back his hand from touching gil when he remember gil and alice were calling for "jack" before he collapsed is crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy omfg the DRAMA i'm eating that shit up. the fact that they both knew jack long long before they ever knew Oz is WILD. i'm clapping with my hands and feet. fingers and toes bitch.

my current theory: gil and Vincent are glen Baskerville children, and this is why gil knew jack and why jack is so warm to him.

Oh my God, this story is gonna be the end of me.

There was so much new information unveiled this volume. We finally got a glimpse of what happened 100 years ago during the tragedy of Sabrie and we also found out that both Alice and Vincent were there as well! Further, Jack Vessalius revealed that Glen Baskerville is still alive!

I am so curious to find out what happened between them 100 years ago. How did these best friends turn on each other and cause such a tragedy? How does their story intertwine with Alice‘s and Vincent and Gil‘s?

I also wonder when we are going to see Break‘s backstory as we have just gotten glimpses of it so far. He is also going to have to make a tough decision, considering Sharon has been kidnapped by Vincent who is also apparently working with the Baskervilles.

There is just so much to still unpack and I wonder how the story is going to progress further.

Oz and Gil's quest to save Alice from the Cheshire Cat and Break's quest to discover what happened a century ago come to a head as we learn more of Alice's origin as well as the residents of the Cat's realm. When we do finally break out of the prison, we learn more about the Pandora organization and the reader discovers a traitor in their midst.

A solid volume, though nothing too surprising given the clues in previous volumes. The story is not complete by any stretch, but we're making solid progress in unraveling the mystery.
