Is speed-dating okay when you're in a relationship? It is when you're looking for a killer, especially in Avery Shaw's world. A naked body has been discovered in the nearby Clinton River, and while Sheriff Jake Farrell is keeping his cards close to his vest, Avery has another avenue of Eliot. It doesn't hurt that the medial examiner seems to have a crush on her -- and verbal diarrhea -- and she keeps stumbling on information that propels her ahead of the pack. Unfortunately for Avery, when she discovers information that no one else has -- and she finds herself on top of the media game -- she has to make a decision, and that decision is going to tick off everyone she knows. Between Jake's anger, Eliot's worry, and Grandpa's insistence that you can't force a handicap parking space on a business owner, Avery has her hands full. Lexie has a new place to live, Carly is adjusting to married life and Avery is trying to convince the men in her life that she's not in danger, despite all evidence to the contrary. It's a busy week -- kind of. In actuality, it's just a normal week for this hard-headed reporter, until someone's eye focuses on Avery and she finds herself in real danger. Again. Jake is angry and Eliot is torn, but Avery has an idea on how to solve the case. The only problem is, when all is said and done, someone is going to be shot ... and Avery is going to regret every move she's made on this case when it happens. Will someone survive to see another Avery Shaw catastrophe?
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE AVERY SHAW SERIES - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!!!
If you have read the other 4 Avery Shaw books, then you are in for a real treat! This is the best one yet!!! If you haven't read any yet, What are you waiting for?!?!? Pop some popcorn, settle in, & make it an Avery Shaw marathon. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. They have humor, murder, romance, & more humor!
This time Avery is trying to unmask a serial killer, one who loves blue-eyed blondes. Hmmmmm.... just like Avery. She of course enlists hunky boyfriend Eliot's help, blackmails cousin Derrick, torments Sheriff Jake, & cons the creepy medical examiner for info. Comic humor is of course still provided by Avery's mother & grandfather at the weekly mandatory family dinners. And what would an Avery Shaw book be with her tormenting Tad, the slimy politician. Avery, of course, still has her flippant attitude & sarcastic mouth (which I personally love!) but she has a heart of gold, especially when dealing with the victims' families. The only one missing this time is cousin Lexie, who has finally moved & is too busy unpacking & setting up her yoga studio. Oh, & make sure you have tissues handy at the big finale! I defy you not to shed a few tears. Another great book in a great series! Now, Ms. Lee, when is book 6 due out?
That was a serious read, for sure. Toward the end Avery actually had me crying about Jake. My heart and stomach were aching with anticipation of what was going to happen next and whether the killer would hurt Avery, or not. I honestly didn’t expect anything to happen to Jake.
I’m so glad that’s all over now and all is well again. Phew.
another winner in the Avery Shaw series. this is a great chick lit/mysteries series with a persistent reporter as our heroine. she has a knack for getting into strange situations, then getting out with humour. a perfect summer read.
This is book five in the Avery Shaw series and I have been sticking with it in the hopes that the series got better. The first couple books i just found the main character to annoying, rude and just not nice for the sake of it and nearly gave up. But now on book five things have improved, okay she can still be annoying and everybody shouts at each other without listening but I actually enjoyed this instalment. Avery is just a big kid that doesn't like to be told what to do- who does ? But not so great when your boyfriend is trying to stop you from getting killed but she does have some good qualities in the form that she is loyal and does care about doing the right thing. She can have a funny way of doing it and as for the family meals, glad they are not my family but what a hoot. The mystery was good, although you could guess who the killer was despite the red herrings. Going to check out book six. Avery is helping her cousin move into a new home, when her cop cousin gets a call. Sensing a story Avery is quick to follow sending her into another murder investigation. The dead naked woman found in the river is not the first and Avery's investigation sends her into the world of speed dating. Is the killer one of the men from the group? Somewhere along the way Avery picks up a stalker and despite her boyfriends and the sheriff demands that she stay out of it and play lego marvel computer games Avery just can't let it go. I like Angel Clark as a narrator, I just wish she wouldn't make all the characters shout when they got emotional. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Avery is one of the most interesting characters I've read. She has atitude coming out her pores but is also really good at what she does on the newspaper.
Lexie has moved out and has her own yoga studio. The book starts off with a woman stabbed multiple times, her body found in the river. There's a pattern found so Avery ends up going to a place to check on a possible lead.
Another murder happens and things get really tight for her in her own house.
While all this kind of thing goes on one of the funniest parts of the series is when she has to go to a family dinner. Her grandfather is quite a character and what he does in this book is rather illegal.
We learn about Eliot's rough background. The ending of the story is quite dramatic.
So far I'm really enjoying this series, which I am surprised about. I'm normally a supernatural/paranormal type of reader, but this books caught my attention. I read the series only bc it's a mystery series, and found a very to be hilarious, and kind of remind me of me a tiny bit. I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 only bc I was able to easily predict who was going to get shot and about 25% in the book figure out who the killer. She does put some suspects in their that seem like idea candidate but it was pretty clear who the killer was. Overall still an awesome book can wait to finish the rest!
Not my favourite, so far, but Avery will be put through the wringer before the book is over, so while all the main characters seemed to annoy me, you know, more than usual, watching Avery go through the ‘thing’ - no spoilers - made up for any frustration I was having with the characters.
Again, she gets herself in trouble, there's a serial killer on the loose, and as usual, Avery Shaw is in the thick of it! Leaving the killer after her. Elliott and Shaws' relationship is going great, but there's jakes confession on love. What will the next story tell us?
I am enjoying this series. Amanda Lee knows how much snark needs to go into these books. And the comic relief with family dinners and grandpa is a welcome break when the book starts getting heavy.
Enjoyed this one, the mistakes in the reading really are irritating, the reader obviously picked them up and reread them but the errors weren't removed. I am enjoying these, I hope the others are proofread
I can’t stop binge reading Amanda m Lee / Lily Harper Hart! This book was funny as usual, made me cry, and makes me want to stop writing this review because I need to go read the next book!!!
I had seen these but had thought about not reading them. I started reading them over a week ago and I love them, The characters, the story lines and the especially the snark.
I was LOVING these books, but I couldn’t finish this one and will not be reading the rest. I can’t stand the way Elliot treats her. His attitude absolutely ruined this series for me.
The main character is snarky, petty and tenacious. She is also fun, loyal and a good reporter. Amanda gives another fun romp, with a surprising twist at the end.
❤So much crazy wherever Avery goes. She is like a whirlwind of madness. Her sarcastic spitfire tongue is pure magic. I love her quick wit and her cynicism.
I love these books the main character is great. Her attitude is so snarky and crazy you can't help but want to read more to see what trouble she is up to.
This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
