Bridal shoe company owner Lori Hanover is in way over her head. First, her designer sister has fallen head over heels for the rock star fiancé of a client - talk about bad PR! Now her business is falling apart. Lori's only hope in saving her company is making the world believe it was true love, even if she's not so sure herself. Her best bet? A song. For this she turns to the most frustrating musical recluse in America, Dash Mills, a man who could pass for Thor’s sexier brother. And even though this former rock superstar agrees to help, it comes at a price…
When Lori agrees to Dash’s terms, he thinks she's the one in for a challenge. But the more time he spends with this spitfire bombshell, the more tempted he is to play her—in more ways than one. But Dash left behind the rock and roll life for a reason. And seductive as Lori may be, if she drags him back into that world, this time he won't forgive himself...or her.
Australian romance author Ally Blake loves reading and strong coffee, porch swings and dappled sunshine, sparkly notebooks and soft, dark pencils.
She also adores writing love stories. Having sold over four million copies of her Harlequin Mills and Boon novels worldwide, she is living her dream.
Alongside one husband, three gloriously rambunctious kids, and too many animal companions to count, Ally lives and writes in the leafy western suburbs of Brisbane.

Resisting the Musician has all the components included in its pages that on most occasions would have me swooning readily and reading with gusto. Sadly, although the basis of this story is sound, I struggled with the characters and the general chemistry between them on the whole.
Lori Hanover is a strong, confident, independent woman, not afraid to stand up for herself and those she cares about - which ticks all my boxes in the ‘things that I like’ category. But the things I didn’t like about her list is just a long - heartless, judgemental, calculating and selfish all sprang to mind whilst reading, and even though there were occasional moments when you saw her vulnerability, and some explanations for her previous behaviour as the book progresses, it was too little and too forgettable for me to change my mind about her, come the end of the book.
Dash Mills again is someone who I would normally fall in love with – a sexy, reclusive, ex-rocker, described as Thor’s brother. And I did like him, but he ended up being a bit of a doormat to Lori’s whims and demands...
”You are trouble, Lorelei. End-of-the-world-as-I-know-it type trouble. Heaven help me.”
Knowing this book is the beginning of a series, featuring some of my favourite authors writing the future books is, if I am being totally honest probably the only reason I actually made it to the end. Ally Blake definitely knows how to put a story together, and the tropes used, are on the whole going to have people one-clicking in their masses, I just think the personalities of the characters involved could have done with their plus points being expanded on earlier in the book, rather than in the last 20%. Would I read another book by this author...
That-said I am still looking forward to future books in the Head over Heels series.

I had a little bit of a problem reading this book. The author's writing style didn't work for me. Also, I didn't particularly like the characters at first. Lori was too abbrasive and Dash seemed to be a bum. As the book goes on you learn of their stories and start to sympathize but it wasn't one of those books that you stay up all night reading. Dash was a world famous rock star and at the pinnacle of the band's succes, he left the band and turned into a hermit. He lives in a very secluded place and was antisocial except for Reg.
Lori spent her childhood in a trailer park. Her father left her mother, her little sister and herself when Lori was a teenager. Her mother was devastated and couldn't deal, so it fell upon Lori to finish raising her little sister and work three jobs to get them out of the trailer park. Thanks to Callie's creativity, they started a shoe company with Callie's shoe designs and were having a splendid life. Then Callie fell in love with a client's fiancee, who also happened to be a rock star, and the media was blasting Callie for being a home wrecker. Their shoe company was also taking a financial hit.
Callie wrote a song for her fiancee Jake and wanted Dash to write the music. It fell upon Lori to get Dash to get over his hermit complex and comply with Callie's wishes. Since Jake's band is the one Dash ran away from and they used to be besties, it should have been easy peasy, but it was not. Dash had conditions,;Lori had a hidden agenda with the song to help her flagging company and it was all a mess. This is when the book got interesting and by this time, I had adapted to the author's writing style and I could enjoy the story.
This was a difficult one to review. I loved the characters - they were fantastic. I loved to overall story line. It has some elements that worked nicely together. It just moved a little slow for me.
Lori is a hard working woman that runs a shoe company. I would LOVE to have her job and get to wear all the new shoes - for publicity purposes of course. They sound amazing - there was just enough description to keep them a small part of the story and make me want a pair as well. She's the exact opposite of Dash. She follows her schedule like the Bible, he doesn't know what day it is half the time. He's so laid back and seemingly carefree that it almost starts to get on your nerves. It sure gets on Lori's nerves and she's not sure how she's ever going to be able to work with him on this song idea.
The whole song idea was brilliant. It was a great way to get the two of them together and continue to throw them at each other until they realized they were actually perfect together. There was just a tad too much of the throwing together and running away again for me.
In the background we have Lori's sister and Dash's ex-bandmate engaged and planning their wedding in the midst of a huge scandal. It was a great backdrop and made sure there was always something going on, even when the main characters weren't the center of the all the action. This is a great book - while it moved a little slow for me it may be just right for others.

I must confess, I found Resisting the Musician a struggle. The set-up for the series and the premise for this story was good; with a bolshy lady and a laid-back secretive ex-rock star, it enticed. But I was bored; nothing particularly happened in the first half of the book and the romantic build-up was drawn out. Dash was a big brute of a sweetheart and a gent with fair reason to choose a quiet private life over his previous as a rock star, but I just couldn't connect with Lori for the large part of the book. I found her controlling, rude, somewhat icy and 50% in I was wondering why on earth a man like Dash would give her the time of day let alone take her to bed. But his perseverance did pay off and at 75% this became the book I so wished it had been much earlier; I finally warmed to Lori when she let her guard down and understood her attitude better.
Had it not been for the fact that I know this is the opener to a continuity series and the next 2 in the series are penned by authors I love, I may have abandoned ship. Ally Blake has set the groundwork but unfortunately Dash and Lori's story took hold too late for me to give it higher than a 2.5 star rating.

This was fun! Just the description of Dash, "Thor's sexier brother" was enough to pull me in. And it was enough to pull Lori in, too. Even if she did ruin at least one pair of high fashion shoes getting from her car to his porch.
Both Lori and Dash have issues. And the issues were reasonable ones, not far-fetched. It was enjoyable reading how they got past them, to find that HEA. I also enjoyed reading about the shoe designs and the process of learning the guitar.
The supporting cast of her sister, his best friend, his mentor, and his DOGS made for a lovely afternoon of reading pleasure. I will certainly be making a point to read more by Ally Blake.
Thank you, NetGalley and Entangled, for the opportunity to read Resisting the Musician
Excellent read! Very well written and the characters are fantastic. I want to know everything about this group of characters. Very descriptive writing that kept me turning page after page! While trying to help her sister, Lori Hanover needs the help of reclusive retired rocker, Dash Mills. Getting him to agree to help her was the easy part, now not falling for him might be a little harder! I highly recommend this one.
"Resisting the Musician" by Ally Blake is the first book in the "Head Over Heels" series from Entangled Indulgence. I decided to check the book out after having been approved to read the ARC for the second book in the series, "Reforming the Rock Star" by Christine Bell, so that I wouldn't miss anything. You know how I am with reading books in the correct order... obsessive much? ^.^
Lori Hanover is the owner of a bridal shoe company, Calliope Shoes, that was successfully making its name in the fashion industry when news of her younger sister, Callie, and the very famous rock star husband-to-be, Jake Mitchell, of a well-known country singer who just happened to be a client of theirs fell in love with each other, thus ending the engagement of said celebrity couple. Now, other clients are steering away from their company, afraid of the bad publicity that's been hounding Calliope Shoes since the news broke. What she needs now is something to put a positive spin on Callie and Jake's infamous romance and it comes in the form of a song her sister wrote for her rock star fiance and the fiancé's very sexy best friend and former band member.
Dash Mills walked away from the career that brought him fame and fortune after not learning of his beloved great uncle's passing until after the end of the band's tour, no thanks to an overly ambitious and zealous woman who thought about herself more than she did Dash. Since then, he's still carrying the burden of not being at his Uncle Pete's bedside and lives quietly in his secluded home with his two dogs and has occasional visits from friends. When he meets Lori Hanover, he recognizes her as being the sort of woman he should stay away from. But while he doesn't appreciate her disturbing his solitude, he does appreciate what he sees before him.
Okay, I'm going to just come out and say it: I didn't really like Lori. I don't know if it was her being overly ambitious or how she was willing to use her sister's love story and twist it just to benefit their company. She preferred blaming Jake more than Callie for all the bad press. It takes two to tango and obviously Callie didn't really worry too much about the ramifications of her own actions. I get that her difficult childhood made her the woman she is today but still...I ended up feeling like she didn't deserve Dash at all.
The story itself was pretty good but I didn't really feel too much chemistry between Lori and Dash for the first half of the book. Even the bits and pieces we get of Callie and Jake seemed more plausible than Lori and Dash falling for each other. Lori just seemed to tightly wound and I honestly continued reading it more for Dash than I did for her. I'm giving "Resisting the Musician" 3.5 stars, rounded off to four stars for Goodreads, majority of which are due to one Dash Mills. ♥
An enjoyable start to a new series--who can resist a hero who's described as "the long lost Hemsworth brother" or a heroine with an awesome shoe wardrobe? Not this reader!
I liked both the Lori's and Dash's characters (and I have to say Lorelei and Dashiel are definitely one of the more unique pairings name-wise that I've ever read). Watching the two of them try so very hard not to fall for one another is quite a trip. It's amazing that Dash, who's pretty much removed himself from most human interaction for the past four years, can see inside Lori and understand what she wants and needs so quickly. On the outside, they seem as if they could never work--she's practically married to her job and schedule, and he barely seems to know what day of the week it is--but they had me sold by the end of the novel. Using the device of the song to bring the two together was a unique twist.
My only real complaint is that this book really left me wanting to know more about the story behind Callie (Lori's sister) and Jake (Dash's former bandmate) getting together. Callie is (and indirectly, Jake as well) the reason that Dash and Lori meet in the first place; and I'd really like to know the back story there. (Maybe it will be in one of the other series books?) There's also a clear set-up here for Lori and Callie's reporter friend Lita and one of the other members of the band, Rocky--the two obviously have a history.
Anxiously waiting the next two books in the series!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the premise and cover of this book the moment I saw it, so I couldn't wait to read it. But, as soon as I started reading, I instantly disliked Lori, who came off as abrasive and high strung. Needless to say - I was a bit apprehensive about the rest of the story. Then I met Dash. Ex-rocker now living the life of a semi-hermit in the woods making things in his shed with his hands. I loved him just as much as I disliked Lori. But, I now think that was Ms. Blake's wonderful point all along. Lori needed to grow - and Dash's lesson in humility was the perfect impetus for that growth. And Dash needed the same push to make him see that life outside wasn't as nearly black and white as he'd made it. Watching them get to where they both had to be was great. It, of course, helped that they had off-the-charts chemistry, and being forced to be around each other just revved that up. The interesting thing was that the part of the book I liked least was Callie (who I'm assuming had her own story already told - one I will not be reading, which is too bad because Jake seems almost as perfect as Dash) - Callie was supposed to be innocent and cute, but came across as self-centered and immature. So much so that I wondered why Lori would even be doing all that she is for her. Luckily, Callie was hardly in the book at all, so it was easy to look past that. Great book with a great cover to match (although I'd like to have seen a guitar on there!)
Note: I was given a copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Lori needs to save her company and her sister's heart. She will do anything, even find a reclusive musician to help her sister Callie write a song to the man she loves.
Lori is focused. She has taken care of everyone but herself since she was young. Lori's drive was sometimes annoying but necessary for the plot. In my opinion she needed some more soft edges to make the falling for a recluse former musician more believable. Dash was a fun character and out of the two I liked him the best. I would have liked to see his character express more of a coming to grips with his past and even some longing for Lori.
The plot was easy to follow with no twists or turns. I really felt no emotion from the characters which in turn sort of made me not root for their HEA. I will admit I finished more out of duty than need to know the outcome.
I really liked Dash and Jake - Callie's love interest - so I might be persuaded to read another book that they are secondary characters.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley for my honest review.
Lori didn't know what she was getting herself into when she stepped onto Dash's doorstep. Neither did Dash.
Lori and Dash form a type of relationship based on the love of their best friends. So they create a song. A song that isn't easy on Dash and a song Lori doesn't believe in.
Dash is a self-imposed loner and doesn't like anyone in his business, but Lori won't take no for an answer. She wants a song, she wants him, a no won't stop her. Dash doesn't stand a chance. Dash and Lori are a beautiful couple and their love story is one I will read again many times.
Dash thinks Lori's intentions are innocent but they're not. So what will happen when Dash finds out, will Lori be able to convince Dash that things have changed or will Dash flee without a backwards glance? Buy the book and find out!
I loved this book. I think everyone who loves romance should pick it up. I am so glad I had the chance to read this book. Dash is extremely sexy but in a loner kind of way, if that's even hot? And Lori is the sunshine Dash needs to find his way back into the world.
Lori Hanover is driven to make Calliope Shoes successful. She wants to give her sister, Callie, a stable life after their rough childhood. Unfortunately her plan has been derailed. Her sister has fallen in love with Jake Mitchell, the rock star, and the bad press is destroying them. To help Callie she goes to ask a favor of Dash Mills, former rocker and Jake's friend. What happens next is pure romance. Dash and Lori are memorable characters who are like oil and water. Their battle of wills and their tempestuous romance hooked me from the first page. I loved their interaction and passion. The drama of the story is a perfect backdrop for their romance. They may fight but I knew that they cared more than the wanted to admit. Their attraction was very sensual and when they open up to each other it was touching. This was a powerful story. Ally Blake did a wonderful job. She made us care what happened to Lori and Dash even though at times they could be abrasive. Resisting the Musician was an interesting and well plotted story with some surprises
I really really enjoyed this book. Lori needs a song, her idea to save her company so she goes off to find Dash, a reclusive former rock star (swoon).
Lori's sister has fallen in love with and gotten herself engaged to a country music star. After bad press is starting to destroy her hard worked for business, Lori asks Dash for help. I really liked Dash, as a loner character, it was refreshing. Lori grew on me and I loved the interlinks of the story with her sister and her fiancee. Loved the added extra of Dash's dogs and I loved the flow of the story.
A fantastic afternoon read and I'm looking forward to reading more in the series. It's a fun read and let's admit it, a whole star is dedicated to the cover ;) I would recommend this if you're a fan of Ally Blake, if you love refreshing reads; fantastic and fun reads; linked stories and just a bit of something different.
Thank you Netgalley and Entangled for the opportunity to read Resisting the Musician.
"3 out of 5 stars! This is a novel full of misconception! As both Dash and Lori are stilling dealing with major issues from their pasts, when they meet they place the misconceptions they have on each other. Yet, as they get to know one another throughout their "music lessons," they work through those misconceptions and loose their hearts to each other in the process.
A very intense novel because of how Dash and Lori are portrayed as being, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them as characters."
I happened on this book (and series) while searching for another and , wow, I am so glad I did! Dash is the epitome of rugged and rock. Bested by tragedy when his band's fame was at its peak, Dash walked away and became a recluse in the boonies. Lorelei, on the other hand, was a strong woman who overcame her own demons and fashioned a successful business with her younger sister, Callie. Now Callie is engaged to a rockstar, Jake, who was a close friend and fellow bandmate to Dash. Sallie has written a love song for Jake but needs the music written for it. She tasks Lorelei with the seemingly impossible task of persuading Dash to come out of seclusion and write it. The sparks fly the day she approaches him and not all in a good way! Thus begins the rollercoaster ride of Lorelei and Dash! This is indeed a book I can highly recommend.
I thought this was a great book. A great romance where the rock star is not drunk and crazy.
They are brought together when Lori's sister wants to write a song for her fiancé and she needs Dash's help with the music to go with her words. He will not play the song but will teach Lori how to play the guitar and in the practice time as they get to know one another, they find out they have an attraction. This is a fairly quick read but such a delight that I could not put it down until I found out if they had a HEA.
This sweet sexy tale about had me in tears. Uptight and driven Lori needs the help of laid back Dash and though they are polar opposites they can teach each other a little about living and a lot about love. I adored watching them grow as individuals and as a couple. And although a complimentary copy was provided by author/publisher for an honest review I would go and buy this for myself.
3 STAR rating. I am troubled when it comes to rating this. The characters have me intrigued, but I didn't see enough into them to be invested. However, I am so interested in where the story goes. I am hoping to feel more passion for life in the next book because the path that they have become could make worlds collide and be a beautiful sight. There is so much potential here.
I love the way Ally Blake writes. Her descriptions are so enjoyable. I wished Dash and Lori would have talked more to each other. I appreciated their thoughts and how it took them to insightful conclusions, which they communicated to each other. However, the process of talking through problems as they arise would have been more fun and more intimate. All around a fun story.
Although I liked Lori, she babied her sister, Callie, way too much. She needed to let Callie stand on her own two feet. Lori and Dash made a great couple and it was great to discover the secrets they were hiding. But the story moved a little too slowly.
Resisting the Musician is the first book in the Head over Heels series. Ally Blake did a great job of setting up a storyline and getting me hooked from page one. Loved the characters and their depth, emotion and chemistry. Looking forward to more books in this series!!
