Marlene Wagman-Geller grew up in Toronto and is a lifelong bibliophile. She is a veteran high school English teacher in National City, California, and currently lives in San Diego.
The author, a deft chronicler of women extraordinaire, has penned another stellar book, this time revealing "The Fascinating Biographies of Bad Girls, Seductresses, Rebels and One-of-a-Kind Women."
There are 33 such women -- including film star Mae West, writer/wit Dorothy Parker, WWII Allied spy Nancy Wake, singer Billie Eilish, climate activist Greta Thunberg -- captured in brief compelling chapters that allow you to dip into their lives and get their essence.
"Brevity is the soul of lingerie," Parker once quipped in ad copy she wrote for Vogue. In UNABASHED WOMEN, it is the soul of delight. I found myself zipping through the table of contents, choosing chapters at random, and thoroughly enjoying each one.
Highly recommended for fans of biography and history and tales of amazing women. Wagman-Geller triumphs again!
Thanks to the author and Mango Publishing for the glorious review copy. Opinions are mine.
Helen Reddy sang "I am woman hear me roar" and I feel like this is essentially deep in the spirit of this book.
Marlene Wagman-Geller chronicles the lives of extraordinary women. Early feminists, pioneers, rebels.
Of course I have heard about some of these women before, but not all of them. Wagman-Geller writes their stories in a lively and expressive way and tells their incredible tales with wit and admiration.
If I had two nitpicks about the book, then it's one of a more "technical" level and another content-wise.
While the writing is good the book suffers from a certain amount of typos which can be quite distracting, especially since it has been edited professionally (I think?).
The other issue is, at least for me and it stems from a very personal view regarding feminism, the "not like other girls" narrative, especially found in chapters about recent lady rebels.
While I agree about the enormous impact the women mentioned in the book had on the world and on the lives of women everywhere (even if you don't even know about them), the book sometimes has a nasty habit of putting down more traditional women or "girly girls" which does not sit right with me. I'm not a fan of pushing one woman by putting down another, to say the least. Fortunately it doesn't happen that often and I'm almost certain it only happens by accident to draw comparisons and not intentionally.
I enjoyed this book immensely and think it's an interesting, entertaining and educational read.
This is a great book for someone who wants to learn more about women in history but may not want to commit the time to read a biography about one person.
It was a great scavenger hunt of juicy details that made me want to read more. I found myself checking out song lyrics or looking online at artist’s pictures as my curiosity was piqued throughout the book.
This is an informative catalog of strong, independent, willful, free- thinking women from across 19th to 21st centuries. The summary biographies are a few pages long each, long enough to get the gist of the women's lives, barriers, and accomplishments, not too long as to bore the reader.
Although the summary biographies were entertaining, they were sometimes difficult to follow, not always going in chronological order of a woman's life, and sometimes bouncing between the multiple names a given woman went by. It also would have been useful to include pictures so that we would be able to put a face to a name, especially for the women from earlier eras.
Wow…so many fascinating women in the 20th/21st century. I hadn’t know about half of them. Found myself googling each character to learn more about them and to see what they looked like. I wish the author had included photos of them. Mind boggling stories of their feats and adventures.
Women don’t have to be one thing and they don’t have to be good all the time.
I picked up this book because I wanted to read the various biographies of the unabashed women and see who made the cut, but also see how the author handled the topic. I need not have worried. This book is quite multicultural, which was great, shows women throughout the most recent times, but went back over 100 years, which showed women have been trying to break the glass ceiling for a long time. I liked the variety of women, too.
These are the most influential women of our time and it’s nice to see such good biographies. They aren’t the most in-depth, but honestly, the book would be gigantic if that was the case. These are nice snapshots and I liked learning about the various people. Mae West, Nellie Bly, Jane Goodall are all among those chronicled.
If you want a book that doesn’t read like a textbook, but could be used as such, then grab this book. If you want to learn about women who are doing it for themselves, then this is the book for you. Pick it up!
Marlene Wagman-Geller has deftly carved out a niche for herself in writing about outrageous, strong-minded women. From female trailblazers to heiresses, eccentrics and women who bloomed riotously after the age of 50, this author shines the spotlight on oft-forgotten, hidden lives. In “Unabashed Women The Fascinating Biographies of Bad Girls, Seductresses, Rebels and One-of-a-Kind Women,” she has done it again! The women profiled in these pages are “mad, bad and dangerous to know” but Wagman-Geller takes up the challenge with gusto. Fast-paced, informative and always entertaining, “Unabashed Women” is a delight to read from start to finish!
Another phenomenal book from Marlene Wagman Geller, my favorite author. And this book she writes about 33 women from 1844 to present that changed history. Some would call these women rebel-rousers, I prefer to say they are women that did what they had to do/were destined to do...rather than women that did what they were supposed to do/should do. This book is filled with fascinating details about women such as P.L. Travers, Ella Maillart, Lee Miller, Nancy Wake, Florynce Kennedy, Mae West, and so on. You will feel truly inspired and brave after reading this. Must read!!!
I’m an immense Wagman-Geller fan and this new collection of mini-biographies really packs a punch. The lives of these courageous bad ass girls and women are at times shocking, but always fascinating and even inspirational. The detailed research and powerful prose drew me in for an unputdownable experience. Keep writing author! I’m already ready for another.
A nice introduction to several interesting women from various eras and areas of interest. I enjoyed learning about a few people I hadn't heard of or didn't know much about.
Really loved some of the chapters more than others. Wish the book had more diversity and also some of the things they chose to applaud were questionable.
