Italian criminologist, physician, and founder of the Italian School of Positivist Criminology. Lombroso rejected the established Classical School, which held that crime was a characteristic trait of human nature.
Instead, using concepts drawn from physiognomy, early eugenics, psychiatry and Social Darwinism, Lombroso's theory of anthropological criminology essentially stated that criminality was inherited, and that someone "born criminal" could be identified by physical defects, which confirmed a criminal as savage, or atavistic.
Outdated trash was almost laughable because of the stupid statements it was making. The fact that it was written 120 years ago should not be an excuse for this abortion.
I read the whole book, and although I disagree with almost everything that he says, I have truly enjoyed my reading and I believe this is a very interesting book.
The reading experience was deeply unpleasant, but this edition was well-edited, and offered valuable insight into the progression of thought in nineteenth-century criminology.
How did anyone even come up with this? There are absolutely no scientifically proven facts. It looks like something that should never have seen the light of day.
Despite the fact I don't agree with most of the ideas, in general the book is recommended for reading to see what kind of attitude the author had towards women (a pretty denigrating one).
