I've not made everything in the cookbook yet but so far all but ONE recipe has been a hit! My kids like it (most of the time!) and I've loved them all, aside from the one anomaly. I would recommend this to anyone looking to do some better, clean eating for SURE!
This is one of those cookbooks you look through and want to make everything. It has great pictures, and the recipes look relatively healthy without being too fussy. The author has a couple short chapters in the beginning on eating healthy and meal planning that provided some good information. However, I diverge with her when it comes to our opinions on full-fat dairy and the use of sugar substitutes. I made the Italian meatballs and the white chicken enchilada bake and both were hits with my family.
One note on her serving sizes though: she obviously isn't feeding teens. Her meatball recipe calls for two meatballs per serving. The enchilada bake expects to feed 8 people with a 9x9 pan. Depending on the appetites in your house, I would plan to double or triple everything.
However, that's my only one small criticism. I borrowed this from the library but think it might be a book to buy. That's my highest form of praise.
Randomly discovered the author on Instagram and started following her. I assumed she was southern, based on her Instagram photos. But apparently, she is a registered nurse who lives in Brighton, MICHIGAN!
The more I find out about this person, the more I like her! Clean eating. Super attractive presentations. A fellow Michigander. Openly Christian. How did I not know about her before?!
I just got her cookbook from the library and I LOVE it! Lots of references to God and the spiritual life. Attractive format & photos. And, oh my gosh, the types of foods she makes!
I haven't gotten to try out many of the recipes yet, but they all look like food I'd want to eat! Initially, I wondered if it was really healthy. LOL. Only on closer inspection and reviewing calorie counts did I conclude that eating food from this cookbook wouldn't send me off the rails. This cookbook definitely contains healthy versions of mid-western food. All the foods that naturally appeal to me.
I got this book from the library, but I am adding it to my buy-soon list. I want a copy for my kitchen. :-)
The author apparently has a website (https://dashingdish.com/) with lots of free content. I'm not into bloggers or using online recipes, but I'd recommend the website to anyone that is.
It’s a “clean eating” cookbook featuring sugar, store bought sauces, and a boatload of cheese in almost ever recipe. This is a cook book for people who don’t really like food or cooking.
The Dashing Dish is an inspirational cookbook chock-full of healthy, innovative yet simple recipes, most of which are gluten-free, sugar-free, and abundant in whole grains.

My Review:
Awesomely good, gluten-free, sugar-free recipes full of flavor. These are just a few words that describe the recipes in Dashing Dish. I recently changed my lifestyle to include recipes such as these. I am glad I did and my stomach is very glad I did. I suffered horrible pain not to mention digestive issues that all could be solved by just going gluten-free. It isn't exactly the cheapest way to eat but thanks to more and more authors serving up their recipes, it is definitely getting easier to cook for my family as well.
She has a recipe called Strawberry Pretzel Dessert that is simply delicious. I love anything strawberry and creamy and this fits the bill. There are over 200 pages tips and recipes included in dashing Dish. She also gives great tips to continue eating this way. I love the recipes!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Book Look.
If eating healthier is one of your lifestyle goals and you are looking for a cookbook that contains practical eating tips and recipes that the whole family can enjoy, then I'd like to recommend Katie Farrell's Dashing Dish to you!
Dashing Dish - 100 Simple & Delicious Recipes For Clean Eating is the perfect cookbook for those who eat a standard American diet but are interested in transitioning to healthier, cleaner meals. As Katie Farrell says:
Clean eating is not a diet; it's a lifestyle approach to eating. This way of eating incorporates whole foods that have not been altered or processed, and that have no chemicals and harmful preservatives added.
Unlike some cookbooks that either overwhelm you with information or introduce you to strange and exotic foods, the strength of Dashing Dish is in the simplicity of her tips and the familiarity of her recipes.
Katie provides you with a number of useful tips for beginning your clean eating lifestyle - enough to successfully apply - but never enough to overwhelm. For example, you will find information on:
* Basic foods from each food group to incorporate into your diet. * Staples for your refrigerator and pantry. * Food substitution recommendations. * Tips for eating healthy on a budget, eating out, and developing healthy habits. * Tips on healthy snacks, meal planning, and staying healthy during special occasions.
You'll also find 100 easy-to-prepare recipes that will appeal to family members, young and old. The recipes are made from ingredients that are readily available. Each recipe is photographed in full color so there are no "mystery meals" lurking in this cookbook. Katie has also provided nutritional information for each dish.
I am delighted to add Dashing Dish to my cookbook collection and encourage you to check it out!
I have quite a few picky eaters in my house. I won't name names but lets just say that mealtime is a challenge for me daily! I was excited when I read the back of Dashing Dish before getting into it to see things like Macaroni and Cheese that my kids actually eat were listed! A healthy way to make something they already love? Yes please!
The other word that had me excited to dive into this cookbook was simple. When I am looking at recipes, sometimes I stop reading when I see ten plus ingredients! I am a mother of three very busy little children. I NEED simple meals to prepare. Sometimes that means sacrificing taste or even their nutritional value. It's really hard to get simple and nutritious meals.
This book has 100 recipes for clean eating. I like that it's a hardback book because something like a cookbook that gets repeated use needs to be! I really like that there's a fully page illustration for each and every recipe! I have never understood cookbooks that don't show a picture of everything. They just pick and choose which ones to show pictures of and those are the only ones I usually end up trying. A picture really is worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to food!
The only thing I would change regarding the aesthetics of the book is the pages. I like cookbooks that have slick pages so that if, and when, you splatter food on them, you can wipe them off!
Now back to the food! I did try a few of the recipes and was really pleased with the results. I really liked the overnight french toast bake! Doing something the night before and having it ready to bake in the morning really simplifies things. This would be fun for Christmas morning or other busy events where you don't want to spend all morning in the kitchen but do want a special breakfast.
The ten minute taco salad was another fun one and as delicious as it was easy to prepare! I like things like this that taste great and are easy to prepare. I have several other recipes that I have ear marked to try next and I'm sure eventually I'll try them all!
The Dashing Dish has renewed my joy of cooking and given me a great list of new things to try with my picky family!
I'm always looking for new, healthy, clean eating recipes to add to my collection. Each of the recipes in this cookbook features a beautiful, full color photograph. (Note: I had to laugh at the fact that the recipe for a cake batter protein shake featured a shake covered with non-pareils sprinkles as it looked beautiful but didn't exactly fit with the sugar-free, clean eating theme.)
Many of the recipes featured in this book were similar to ones that I already make, but I really liked the fact that the recipes were either naturally gluten free or easy to convert to being gluten free. She uses oat flour in her recipes which I like. The recipes that I tested tasted really good.
There were a few of things that I didn't like. She uses low-fat, light, reduced-fat, and non-fat dairy ingredients. We only use full fat dairy at our house. She also states that butter is an unhealthy fat which is not something with which I agree. For the most part, she only uses egg whites which is something that I prefer not to do when possible. Obviously, the dairy ingredients are no big deal as I can just substitute what we normally use. The egg whites are a little more complicated.
Katie includes nutritional information for each of the recipes. The book begins with a guide to healthy, clean eating for those who aren't familiar with clean eating. Katie does a wonderful job laying everything out for her readers. While I may not always agree with her definition of clean eating, she does explain her way of thinking well. (Most people I know don't consider things like lunch meat part of clean eating.)
I had mixed feelings about the book as it had some highs and lows. Ultimately, it all depends on your idea of clean eating and what you're looking for in a recipe book. I rate this book 3.5 stars.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from a publisher. A positive review in neither expected nor guaranteed, and all opinions are my own.
Okay, my obsession with cookbooks continues with Dashing Dish which is one dashing book. Yes, I know that was cheesy but I'm one tired mama today. I just spent some time going through this cookbook and I'm still drooling just thinking about all of the amazingly delicious looking recipes in this book. My loves:
Pictures - this book is filled with delicious pictures of every recipe. Healthy - Since this is a clean eating cookbook, these are healthier versions of our favorites! Layout - Easy to use, easy to read. My dislikes: Waiting - The boys and I are going to start doing 1 week cooking sessions from different cookbooks, but we won't have the time together until Spring Break...and I want to eat all of the foods now! Seriously, if you're looking for healthier alternatives to some seriously delicious recipes, don't hesitate to pick up this book. You won't regret it!
This is a good book for anyone in the beginning stages of eating clean, eating whole foods, those without preservatives or processing. She uses old-fashioned oats, non-fat Greek yogurt, almond milk, etc. My only hesitation was using artificial sweetener but she recommends Stevia. I did adjust her recipes as I have a diabetic in the house. I am in the habit of using only half the sugar the recipe calls for and I did that with her recipes, using only half (or less) of the sweetener in the recipe. The hint of sweetness is still there but does not mask the flavor of the other ingredients. See my complete review at http://bit.ly/1EkK91J. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Icon Media for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
Gave two stars bc I appreciate the remarks she has about calorie counting at the beginning- she basically says to calorie count for a month to get a feel for what portion sizes should be, then listen to your body when you're eating.
As far as the recipes, there were two that I will try, but I was dismayed to see how many contained protein powder. Seriously, almost ALL of the breakfasts, snacks and desserts contained protein powder. That doesn't exactly scream "clean eating" to me, and she doesn't even discuss or justify her abundant use of it in the "ingredients" list at the beginning.
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Love (err...addicted to) her blog, so why wouldn't I love her cookbook?! :)
Great layout and photos, includes nutrition information, and helpful tips on eating healthy. Great job, Katie!!! Oh, and there were a handful of recipes I was already familiar with because of her blog, but I cannot wait to dive into the others!
