What teenager hasn’t known the embarrassment of a parent who tries too hard? Who says the wrong thing? Wears the wrong clothes? Drives the wrong car?
Nathalia has that problem. But not only that, he has the MOST EMBARRASSING surname in the history of terrible surnames. Pronounced bew-MOLE-ay, other people tend to call her ‘Bumhole’. Just what a teenager needs.
Starting at a new school, Nathalia is desperate to escape the torments she has formerly experienced and hide her name, as well as her dad. But of course, he won’t be kept hidden. And he WILL keep on trying to help his lttle girl!
It’s amusing, though as an adult, I felt about Nathalia just as I felt towards Greg in 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' – I sympathised more with the grown-ups (or friends) in their lives and thought them rather selfish and lacking in empathy. But then again, I am 35!
And the story does, while including scenes of horrific embarrassment, also manage to show Dad’s love for his daughter, and of course by the end, she learns a little appreciation too.
Some very funny scenes – Dad’s amazingly inept but crazy birthday party is a highlight. I liked Nathalia’s growing friendship with a misfit in her class as well, that was nicely written.
I listened to the audio version of this book and enjoyed the lively and clear narration, Nathalia’s voice was well expressed.
A good choice for girls aged 10-13.
