Who We Were

Rate this book
Summer school meant I could wipe the slate clean. I could become Sadie Peters, popular and outgoing, instead of the shy nobody only my best friend loved. My intentions were pure.
I thought I could handle the transition to Alcott High, become someone else, all while keeping my integrity intact.
But I was wrong.
Those four weeks taught me things about people I never knew possible. I lost my best friend to a dangerous situation, and it was all my fault. All because I wanted to become someone I wasn’t.
Maybe who I was wasn’t so horrible after all.

This thought-provoking book is a unique story about surviving high school relationships, illness, hope, redemption, forgiveness and love.

I can’t say enough about how much this book impacted me. It was so good that I am still thinking about the story line and how well the author presented touchy subjects that a large majority of us experienced and cried over during high school and/or college.

As you read this book you will see a part of you in it and you will really admire how Sadie deals with football twin brothers, Nash and Nolan Ryland, as well as the not so nice quarterback, Oliver. I love how Sadie strives to overcome her existing stereotype and recreate herself, in spite of the obstacles that keep jumping in her way.

I give it 5 STARS.

I WAS GIVEN THIS ARC BY THE AUTHOR FOR AN HONEST OPINION

Please tell me there's going to be a book 2?!?

Probably the best contemporary book I have read this year. What I look for in books is: good character development and description. And Christy gave that to me perfectly. To be honest I was always Team Nolan from the beginning. The chemistry they had was perfect and I loved the plot twist in the end. If you're looking for a good summer read but you want to read it in the fall then pick this book! It is a very fast-paced read and will leave you wanting more!

Sloat has won me over AGAIN!, September 11, 2014
I first became a fan of Sloat's writing while reading her paranormal series, The Visitors series. I quickly realized she had a major talent for blending fear, mystery, & romance. From there I read several of her other works available as well. When I heard she had a contemporary romance coming out I was not sure what to expect seeing as this lady knows how to scare the pants off of me with her ghost story telling skills. BUT here I am shouting loud that Sloat has won me over AGAIN!

Who we were is such a fitting title. Talk about reflecting on things. We walk along side these teens as they transform from oblivious children to grown ups who now see people and things for what they truly are.
I really enjoyed these characters & the story they unraveled before me. Sloat magnificently provided a vivid view of their inner turmoil. No details were spared, everything laid out for all to see, & their paths forever changed by the choices they made. Their feelings, similar to many I've had in my life, helped me see them as she intended. And I am a sucker for a happy ending. ;) The more I read the more I loved these characters & their tale. I hate to spoil a good story, so I will leave it to you to read & enjoy....just keep reading & let us know what you think after it's all said & done.

I am in awe of how Christy can write a story that speaks to my heart. Sadie is a girl who embodies the very meaning of endurance. From wanting to rescue what's left of a friendship to falling for someone who may disappear like the lazy summer days. It's a story of empowerment, self direction, and love in every way possible. A must read... get your tissues ready, you're going to need them.

This is an amazing book. Sadie is so strong even though she is very shy and keeps to herself. She goes to summer school at a different school and he whole world changes. She meets new people some good like Nolan and some not so good like Oliver. I love the romantic parts of this story. It also shows that u should be urself at all times. I wish I could find myself a Nolan.

“Who We Were” is such a wonderful, heartfelt book, and a breath of fresh air. I finished it within 24 hours and really wish there was a second book (please tell me there will be?). I liked Sadie from the beginning because she is like a lot of kids her age- just trying to find her place in the world and fit in. She is taking summer classes at another school in her town, and decides this is the time for her to reinvent herself, not be the shy, quiet girl she is at her school. She meets Kyleigh, and right away they hit it off and become close friends. She also meets Nash, a super-hot, somewhat cocky football player. He really seems into her, but as the days go by, she is not sure about him or his intentions. Something just does not feel right.

Sadie’s best friend, Lily, is working at the ice cream shop for the summer; and instantly falls for Nash’s fellow football player, Oliver. Sadie does not like Oliver from the get go, and finds out some disturbing news about him. Unfortunately, Lily is too lust-stricken to care what Sadie thinks, and picks Oliver over their friendship. Maybe this summer isn’t going to be as promising as Sadie once hoped.

When things between Sadie and Nash meets a cross roads- she finally sees him for his true colors, she finds a friendship brewing with his twin brother, Nolan. Nolan is nothing like Nash, and maybe that is what makes him so attractive to her. Before long that friendship blossoms into a real relationship, and Sadie has never been so happy, with the exception of losing her best friend.
As summer comes to a close and senior year in high school begins, the promises that Kyleigh, Nolan and Sadie made to stay close is still intact, even though Sadie feared it would dwindle away with time. Nolan has some medical concerns he finally confides in with Sadie, and they face them together, being strong for each other only like soul mates could be.

What will happen as senior year draws to a close and the students prepare for college? Can Sadie and Lily every reconcile? And how strong is Sadie’s relationship with Nolan?

Sadie gets the chance at a clean slate. She is going to summer school at Alcott High, she is taking courses that are required for senior year now so that she would be able to have half day sessions. Then she will be taking creative writing courses at the local college preparing her for a university and hopefully an internship at a publishing firm. On the first day she met Nash Rylan and she was very surprised that he even talked to her. Nash has her sit with him at lunch and wants to take her to ice cream. Oliver asks Sadie if she has any cute friends, she told him about Lily but she also told him not to get his hopes up. She also meets Kyleigh in her class and they become friends, she also meets Nolan who wasn't surprised that she liked Nash. Lily and Sadie had a really bad fight and they stopped being friends.
Sadie goes to Ridgeline and she is looking forward to making friends over the summer. Nash hates Ridgeline, failed economics and a football player Nolan's twin brother. Nolan was sick, used to be a football player, has not been home in three weeks. Oliver Nash's friend, major player and football player. Lily doesn't use product, doesn't like football players and she is Sadie's friend and she works at the scoop. Kyleigh has class with Sadie, has hearing aides, she is really nice. Cara is Sadie's sister didn't come home for summer break because she wanted to be away from their mother.
I truly loved this book, I loved how the characters were very well developed. I also liked how I wasn't able to put this book down. Its a very fast read. I loved Christy's style of writing. This is my first book by Christy and it most definitely will not be my last. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!!

In Who We Were by Christy Sloat, Sadie Peters is going to summer school at a different school than her own in order to gain some extra credit so she can have shorter days next year. She never intended to gain more friends or start falling for one of the very popular Rylan brothers. And she definitely didn’t expect to grow distant from her best friend, Lily. How can so much change in such a short amount of time? While some changes can be good, Sadie is having trouble dealing with others.

What a pleasant surprise! When first starting this book, I thought it was just a simple book about a teenager going through everyday teenage problems, but I was wrong. Yes, Sadie has typical issues with friends and potential boyfriends, but there were so many messages I took away from this book. One thing that sticks out in my head is we have to be supportive of our friends, no matter what. Many of us disapprove of the choices our friends and family members make, but we ultimately have to support them if we truly care. Otherwise, we lose those very important people that mean so much to us. I think teenagers and adults alike should take this very important message to heart. In addition to the lessons learned, I really enjoyed the romance. It was sweet and moved at the perfect pace. My only complaint was that I wish it were longer. I was so disappointed to see it end. I wanted to see more of Sadie and her life with her new guy. Filled with real emotions and heartwarming moments that will make you reminisce about high school and your first love, Who We Were is a must-read. I can’t wait to read more by Christy Sloat. I’m a fan!

I have had the pleasure of following Christy Sloat’s writing career and it astonishes me how much she has grown as writer. Who We Were speaks volumes to that statement.

Who We Were is a story that everyone can relate to no matter if you are 15 or 45. It is so easy to put yourself into Sadie Peter’s shoes and immerse yourself in her life. High School is tough. Your world is changing. You are growing up and expanding your horizon. Sometimes this journey leads you to new people and experiences as you out grow and leave behind others. Sadie is learning this first hand during the summer before her senior year. As Sadie attends summer school to lighten her class load for next year, she decides to meet new people and reinvent how she and others see herself. Of course this doesn’t happen without creating ripples in her existing pool of relationships. That summer turns out to be a life altering experience for Sadie and those around her.

Who among us hasn’t been through a similar situation? This story takes a realistic view at growing up, growing apart, and growing into the person you were meant to be. This book has staying power. It will never go out of style. Who We Were deals with such a relevant topic; you will be able to recommend it for generations.

With Who We Were, Christy Sloat has shown the publishing world that she has what it takes to be a writer and contender in multiple genres. Christy has grown as a writer and it clearly shows in her latest work. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this writer.

Sadie is an amazing main character. She starts off not sure where she belongs but the summer school was really nothing more than credits. She wants a fresh new start and maybe something more. She goes to a new school and meets new people. But what if the people you meet are not the people that you thought they were? What if you fell in love with the wrong boy .?
Friendship will be tested and emotions will be on the line.

However theres alway light after the storm.

I loved this book I enjoyed the way it was laid out I'm not going to ruin the surprise so go and read.
The characters were easy to relate to and fun to read about. You will defiantly experience sadness but dont all the good book have sadness. :) I fell in love with Nolan and his small acts of "kindness." I liked him from the start .

I know my review is really vague but thats because I want you to read it and experience it for your self.

Overall.

This is only the second book I have read by Christy and I loved it.

Whilst I dont fit the demograph of a Young Adult *cough* Im in my 30s *cough*, I still love to read books in this grene.

Who we were is a great coming of age story. Christy does a great job with her characters who are instantly relatable and likeable at the same time and also well developed.
This story is about Sadie surviving her summer classes whilst falling in love - with the wrong guy then finding the right one. It also covers her friendship with her best friend Lily, who I didnt like from the get go and how that changes with the progression of the story. Nash and Nolan were strong characters as well and I was Team Nolan from start, there was just something off with Nash :)

I loved this book, it was a fast read and I could't put it down and come the end I had a warm fuzzy glow for Sadie. If you are looking for a great wee love story I highly recommend this (if YA is in your genre)

Disclosure: This ebook was provided by the author in exchange for an HONEST and not necessarily positive review.

Who We Were is a lovely coming-of-age story. There's a great mix of angst, humour, drama and sweet romance. As a result, this book was highly readable and enjoyable.

The characters were well developed and three-dimensional. This made following their journey a pleasure. The main character Sadie is a likable character, one who I was keen to see grow and develop into the young woman she was destined to become. Like all good quality YA reads, Who We Were tackles topical issues relevant to the audience. The authors addresses and deals with these well. She doesn't wash over them; rather, she gives the reader an opportunity to react to the situations and issues. This is a must in a successful YA read.

Thoroughly enjoyable and well written.

i received this book for my honest review.

I loved this book, it was really good! The main characters were so life like and relatable it was uncanny. I started thinking to myself of people in high school i knew that matched the characters in this book. Sadie, Nolan, Kyleigh, Lilly are all in high school and all with defferent styles. During the entire book I was feeling bad for Sadie. She had this supposedly best friend who basically dumps Sadie for a boy! What kind of friend does that? Not to mention she treated Sadie like crap! I never liked Nash in the story he always seemed like a jerk, Nolan is much better fpr Sadie. I would recommend this book to any teenager because it shows a part of high books now adays dont writw about. I applaud Christy for writting this and showing this side of teenage life.

OMG, this book was well written, it takes you into a Sadie, Nolan, and Noah's life and their decisions. It is an emotional book,with some underlying themes that so many people can relate to. Many who read this will be taken through the ringer in a good way. You will feel emotions you haven't felt since high school. You will remember what life is all about and really question in your own mind everything you thought and felt as a teenager. Loved this book the themes and the way the author leaves you guessing until the very end. This is a must read for everyone!

I think this might be Christy Sloat's best book yet. It took me a little longer than what it should have to finish this book, but that's on me, but I couldn't wait to get back to it each time. I felt that connection with Sadie pretty much instantly in the book. I felt that I could relate to her when I was back in high school so that made me like her a little bit more. I feel that it's a book everyone could enjoy and should add it to their reading.

~~~RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW~~~
An amazing book! Christy Sloat took a a thought and made it into a story of real life. Of what it's like to love and lose and love again. How to over come life trials. How to be strong and stand together. I can't really explain just what reading this book did, but it sure as heck had me crying and screaming at certain times. Times to where I wanted to shake the living day light out of someone and other times where I needed a box of tissue. This is one heck of a well written story!
This book is really great! I could totally relate to Sadie and her struggles with finding herself at a time when you are young and there are so many changes happening around you. High school is a pivotal point in a teen girl's life. Christy's writing is flawless and clean and flowed so well. Her characters are vibrant and relatable. This is an all around great read that I'd recommend to any reader.
This is a great coming of age story. I found the characters and situations very relatable. It took me back to my high school years when my best friends were found not in my school but out of my school. My favorite character was Nolan, he was a wonderful mystery to unravel. All in all this was a good read that pulled you in. I found it hard to put down. I also loved Kyleigh, she reminded me of my best friend in high school.
Wow, what a gripping story! I was pulled in right away and I had a hard time putting it down! This is not just any story, this is High School. The happy, sad, horror filled days that come with being a teenager trying to find out who you are. So many stereotypes and just all around emotions. It brought me right back to those insecure days. This is a must read, at any age.
This book was a sweat, romantic, horrifying, sad, and down right incredible story, but that is how real life is, especially for teenage girls. This story had all the feelers in it and is a tissue box worthy read. The characters were phenomenal and easy to connected with. The story-line fits right in with the life and times of a teenage girl with all her ups and downs and heartaches with a few added extras to it, but it seemed to make the character stronger in the end. I really enjoyed this story and I highly recommend it!
I didn’t think it would be possible to love one of Ms. Sloat’s books more than I loved Slumber, but I must say, I think I’ve found the one to top it. Perhaps because it’s so relatable. We all have wanted to reinvent ourselves. We’ve all found out we had friends who weren’t who we thought they were. We’ve all had friends make decisions that worry us. We’ve all had crushes on guys who turn out to be less than good and had people we didn’t expect to like in that way turn into something more than we expected. Everything about this story is relatable, even in my adult life I am seeing some of these things.
The story is written with such emotional accuracy that you know this has to be written with some personal experience. You can’t write a story and have it connect so perfectly without having gone through some of it. I love everything about this story. The sadness and heartbreak, the fear, the joy, the new friendships, the discovery of who people truly are, the way Sadie comes out of her shell and grows into who she wants to be. It’s all just lovely!
The Sadie’s world is created just beautifully and I love her interactions with her friends, her romantic interests and her enemies. I’ve known people like all of them and they are accurately represented here.
If you need a book to get lost in, this is the one. When you’re happy and you need something sweet, this is it. When you’re sad and need a relatable escape, this is it. When your friends are giving you trouble and you need to know you’re not alone, this is it. When you just want a sweet guy in your life, this is it.
I can not recommend this book enough. Series, it’s gone right to the top of my “you should read” list. I loved it!
I've enjoyed how Who We Were is truly unique and original. It's unlike any YA contemporary novel I've read! Different, in a way that its contents are far more intriguing especially with characters that are pretty mysterious. Readers will definitely be on the edge of their seat! I couldn't recommend this book enough. It's simple and concise narrative of the protagonist is so engaging, it has to be read without any hesitation.
The situations are well-thought out and was handled very logically. I was literally holding my breath every time I felt that there's some huge twist or something going to be. It has been like that for me while reading the book and how it has keep me so interested.
The characters are likeable and realistic. Sadie Peters is smart about making her own choices and she takes responsibilities of those choices. For one, the friendship she embrace so much with Lily. Unfortunately she has to stay away from Lily because of how inappropriate she acts and her being reckless. Sadie has a mind of her own and will not be influenced easily. I like that from her.
The plot is all organized and intelligible for me to follow. There are sweet moments and tears shed while reading this book. Readers will be surprise especially towards the end. It's an unforgettable read.
I loved this book and I thought it was a wonderful page-turning read. I finally got to read it the other day because I’ve been busy and Christy herself sent it to me awhile ago. I am going to give an honest review though so here it is. The Info to buy the book via e-book or Paperback will be at the end of the review and IT WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS!
I thought Sadie the main character in the book was the total opposite of me. I wouldn’t have stood up for myself like she did with both her best friend become ex-best friend Lily and the total CREEP Nash who she was crushing on before she got to know his sweet and kind brother Nolan who was the sick one and not their Mother as Nash told Sadie. Lily, was a bit on the wild side though.. I really wouldn’t befriend her if she was living in the real world. I also thought that Lily made poor choices and that she didn’t treat Sadie all that well when they were friends. Kyleigh however, I would friend because she is a nice and sweet girl who warns Sadie about Nash.. or tries to anyway but Sadie doesn’t listen till it’s too late. I loved how Nolan protected Sadie from the party that Nash invited her to because Nash was there with another girl and he didn’t want Sadie to get hurt. I thought Sadie and Nolan were so sweet when they finally became a couple though and she was changed into his clothes out of her dress that she was wearing and he said,”I’m so happy that I can finally tell you that you look so sexy in my clothes.” As he told her she looked,”adorable in his clothes” when they were just friends. All in all, I thought that this book was really good and I am looking forward to reading more works by Christy Sloat.
