A golden thread joined them, a bond that went deeper than love – and it had nearly destroyed them.

On the brink of another war, and overwhelmed by the force of their feelings for one another, Torj discovers there is far more to their bond than mere passion. The legendary warsword is determined to protect Wren at all costs, even if it means lying to her… Even if it means losing her forever.

Meanwhile, Wren is struggling to find her place in the world both as an advanced student of alchemy at the ancient academy of Drevenor, and as one of the heirs to a lost kingdom. With the midrealms once again facing destruction, Wren must decide: loyalty or liberation? Legacy or love?

As new political players emerge, Wren discovers that her storm magic is more powerful than she ever imagined and that it could tear the kingdoms apart.

𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲:
Thorns & Fire is the second instalment in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy by author Helen Scheuerer. Whilst this series is advertised for its ability to be read separately from The Legends of Thezmarr series, I personally recommend reading that series prior to this one for better emotional impact, overall enjoyment and understanding. This book kicks off almost immediately where things left off in Iron & Embers as our entire cast of characters are left reeling in the aftermath of the Battle of Drevenor. Bonds have been irrevocably severed and the emotional impact of the choices made at the end of book one are a consistent theme explored throughout the duration of the book. Thorns & Fire has yet again proven the magic that sparks upon Scheuerer's fingertips as I have found myself starting and finishing this book within a twenty-four hour period in my desperation to predict where the story is leading us towards. I was like a woman possessed as I found myself unable to put this utterly addictive and emotionally devastating tale down as I battled with my desire to savour it alongside my growing need for answers. This book wonderfully guides the reader further into the intimate depths of our main characters' vulnerabilities and fears as the stakes continue to get higher and more impactful with the consequences more severe than ever. The well-paced story masterfully balanced supporting the growth of our compelling cast of characters alongside the thrilling plot that continues to grow and build with every new chapter. I continue to feel in awe of the author's storytelling as I seem to already find myself eagerly and impatiently awaiting the conclusion to this spellbinding trilogy that has had me ensnared in its grip from the very beginning. I'm beyond grateful that the final book is due to release late-2025 and I look forward to seeing how the author decides to conclude this unmissable story. The Ashes of Thezmarr is not a Romantasy to be missed in 2025, so please take this as your sign to pick it up if you haven't already.

𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭:
The plot within Thorns & Fire begins mere weeks after the Battle of Drevenor as we follow Torj Elderbrook in his mission to rescue the abducted Queen Reyna alongside his fellow Warsword, Wilder Hawthorne. War is once again brewing throughout the Midrealms with dissent and unrest threatening the precarious peace that many have tried desperately to nourish after the devastation left from the previous war. With the rise of a nefarious rebel group threatening to change the world as they know it with an unmasked man at the helm, the need for answers in a rush against time is more important than ever as magic itself becomes threatened. I really loved how much higher the stakes were raised throughout the duration of the book. The power of a Warsword was always seen as an unstoppable and unbeatable force with their Furies-given strength so it was interesting to watch them crumble under a threat they had never before faced. To see their morality challenged offered a changed perspective that opened up new discussions and deeper exploration surrounding the sense of vulnerability that helped me feel connected to the characters and the challenges that they face. I sometimes find with trilogies that a sequel can unfortunately suffer from 'middle book syndrome' as it struggles to live up to the expectations set at the end of book one, however I'm thrilled to say that this has not been the case in Thorns & Fire which has continued to evolve in strength alongside the author’s writing. Every single chapter, character development and plot progression has felt intentional in its impact to drive the story towards what I anticipate to be an epic conclusion to this unforgettable series. I savoured every new revelation that was dropped into our laps as some answers were unveiled whilst introducing even more questions waiting to be explored. Wren Embervale and Torj find themselves once again pushed to their limit in a world determined to test their love and loyalty for one another amidst foes that are determined to keep them apart. This is an emotional ride from start to finish, so I definitely recommend having your tissues on-hand for when you'll be in need of them.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Wren Embervale is such a wonderfully complex character that I have loved getting to see grow and evolve over the duration of the six current core books that exist within the Thezmarr universe. The way she has grown as she strives to channel her rage and heartbreak into something positive was such a wonderful transition to experience after seeing her struggle to lift herself back up from her lowest point in life during Iron & Embers. Her strive and determination towards discovering a cure was both as admirable as it was heart-breaking which left me experiencing rage over the unfair expectations forced upon her shoulders. Wren is expected to bear many burdens without complaint with little support and it made me feel so emotionally connected to her struggles. Her despair and fear over not being enough to save the innocents of the Midrealms really gutted me as I desperately yearned for her success above all else. Seeing how far Wren has come on her journey has been such a rewarding and fulfilling experience as we are able to see her willingness towards being more open with the human connection and companionship that she had once openly rejected out of the fear of potentially facing that loss that can come with experiencing love. Seeing Wren face the trauma of her past and use it as motivation to strive for a better future was the evolvement I craved and needed to see, and I honestly think that the author has done such a beautiful job at unravelling Wren's character just to build her back up brick-by-brick. Her loyalty and commitment to those she loves felt unmatched and it was a joy to witness her slowly discover her authoritative voice with their unwavering support and belief in what she has to offer. The way she commands a room and refuses to be undermined by peers and superiors alike had me audibly applauding, and I cannot wait to see what comes next for Wren's character in the final instalment in this trilogy. Wren is one of those characters that sticks with you for a very long time, and it has been nothing but a joy getting to follow her on this tumultuous yet impactful journey.

Torj Elderbrook you beautiful, unwaveringly strong-minded and sometimes frustrating man that I cannot help but love with my heart, soul and entire being. I can't lie... there was small moments when I yearned for the ability to reach into my kindle and shake the stubbornness out of this man. Yet, at the same time I fully understand the struggles and motivations centred around his character so ultimately his decisions did make a lot of sense in context. I really feel for Torj as his notable reputation as the legendary 'Bear Slayer' Warsword has created this narrative that follows him within his everyday life for good and for bad. Torj is this incredibly strong and dependable man who feels a lot whilst being afraid of being an emotional burden on others. His yearning for friendship and companionship to form his own version of a family was devastating as Torj is the man who gives his everything to the people in life whilst refusing to expect anything back in return. His selfless nature and innate goodness are a huge part of his identity, making it impossible to not want to root for his character as he's basically the human embodiment of a golden retriever. The lack of answers surrounding his missing grandmother really tugged on my heartstrings to the point that I desperately need Scheuerer to have mercy on my battered heart by resolving this plot-line on a positive note. Poor Torj has suffered and sacrificed more than enough on behalf of others, so now it's finally his turn to be happy. He's nothing but deserving of having that love and loyalty returned to him tenfold and I loved getting to see him realise that he's not just an extension of Wren. Seeing him to realise that the people within his life also care for him apart of Wren nearly had me sobbing as it was apparent that Torj never expected to be liked for who he is as his own independent person. Torj is such a strong character and devoted love interest who remains one of my all-time favourite book boyfriends, and I cannot wait to see him fight for the love and life that he knows he deserves in the final book in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy.

𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
I fear author Helen Scheuerer saw us all comment on the yearning within book one and said 'lol hold my pen' because I beg your finest pardon? The angst? The yearning? The PAIN? Took me out. Deceased. RIP Erin... because my goodness was I overwhelmed by the rollercoaster of emotions that I experienced throughout the relationship development between Wren and Torj from beginning to end. There's no denying the electric connection between both characters and I had a great time getting to see them unravel over time as they fought as hard as they could to deny that connection. The yearning written between Wren and Torj was absolute perfection as it left me on the edge of my seat feeling ever variety of emotion possible. The frustration, sadness and sense of loss was palpable between both characters as I desperately wished for the ability to make them work it all out by smashing them together like I did with Barbies growing up (we all did it don’t lie). The beginning of Thorns & Fire really did hurt, but I also had the best time getting to experience the progression that was masterfully written through to the end as I'm weak for a slow-burn dynamic filled with angst and hard work. The witty interactions and banter that exists between both characters never fails to make me laugh as they strive to get the last word in during their interactions out of sheer stubbornness. The way Wren and Torj regard one another as equals despite their differences in station was wonderful to see as it helped their love story feel all the more authentic and honest. There's no denying that both characters love fiercely without restriction and it was beautiful to experience the truth finally being laid out into the open after the time-period of suffering that we watch them endure. The way Wren and Torj slowly learned how to better communicate as a couple felt hard-earned and wholly authentic after the many struggles that we have witnessed them face. The intimate insights into their fears and vulnerabilities created a wonderful opening into humanising both characters and making them all the more relatable to the reader. Seeing them learn how to grow and evolve as a couple was a fundamentally important development within their relationship and I cannot wait to witness Wren and Torj continue to grow in love and strength as a couple in their bid for a happy ending in the final book of the series. That ending though? I’m billing Helen for my therapy sessions.

𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
In conclusion, Thorns & Fire was a strong addition to The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy which saw the author masterfully weaving the intricate nature between our two main characters alongside a compelling plot that continues to grow in strength with every release. That ending was an emotional whirlwind that left my jaw practically on the floor in shock and devastation. I would happily read more book series' centred around this world and its compelling cast of side characters that have been wonderfully introduced, so I cannot wait to see if the author decides that there is more stories waiting to be told within the Thezmarr universe. Author Helen Scheuerer has long solidified herself as an auto-buy author of mine, so it's no surprise to say that I already have book three on preorder as I eagerly await what I anticipate to be a thrilling conclusion to Wren and Torj's story in a currently unnamed book three, predicated to release sometime November/December 2025.

“That man burns for you, Wren. The sooner you both catch alight the better, lest you set the whole world ablaze.”

everyone knows by now how much i love Torj, i never shut up about this man. the romance he has with Wren can’t be defeated, if i was rating it based on how much i love them alone it’d be a 10000000/10. there’s not anything of real importance that goes on in this book though.. it falls very hard into the second book syndrome // filler book category. despite that, i actually didn’t have a problem with any of it until the VERY end.

“I can still feel the imprint of you like a brand, Embers, so no. No pretending.”

i don’t think Torj could do no real wrong in my eyes, but i absolutely live for the way Wren calls him out whenever he tried to deny how he felt about her. the side characters still carry as always, Kipp and Cal have my heart ofc. there was a reveal that i guessed but the route the author took with Wren and the decisions she made just pissed me off, it was so unnecessary and had Wren looking like a hypocrite. the last 5 chapters ruined my enjoyment cause it didn’t even make sense but I’m hoping the next book will be on the level of book one.

➺ thanks to my twin beauty Maeghan for buddy reading this with me, Torj is still MINE 🔪💙

‘Furies know I have tried to stay away. I have tried to protect you from this. But the force of it, the force of you . . . I can’t take it any more. I want you, Wren. I want you so badly I can’t breathe.’

So good! Loved it. I adore this series, it has its clichés but done well and addictive, and, for me, it’s way superior to the first series. I mean, I liked the Legends of Thezmarr, but Wren and Torj are Thezmarr otp, they have been my favorite characters from the start and their stories, both as personal journeys and as a couple, are what I love the most here.

‘I’m his to protect,’ she said. ‘And he’s mine.’

Wren is an amazing fmc, I root for her, respect the hell out of her and feel for her a lot. She’s resourceful, pragmatic, clever and sharp, she is able to see both the bigger picture and small perspective, she’s kind, strong and she shows that one can be a force to be reckoned with even without wielding a sword, with her mind, alchemy and magic she’s not one how needs rescuing and is actually the most dangerous opponent. After everything she went through, she’s still struggling with ptsd and grief, it’s a process and one does not heal overnight, that makes her and her feelings more real, but she keeps going, continuing her journey of healing and walking through grief and it’s handled really well; she’s also growing stronger, finding her place and taking charge. Queen.

Torj is the swoon worthy protective warrior I needed. He’s loyal, good, with a big heart, flirty (with Wren obv), and in this one we get to see more of his past and understand him even better, his insecurities, his feelings of unworthiness and his deep need to protect the one he loves; so his stubbornness in keeping the truth of the bond from Wren didn’t annoy me, because I understood (despite wanting him to just tell her already). Also, Wren is just as stubborn so they’re well matched. He’s absolutely down bad for Wren and I love a man obsessed and in awe of his woman. And I really want him to find his grandma.

Plotwise, there’s a lot of preparation for the final book, politics, revelations and tensions rising, there’s some action, but less that book one, it focuses more on character development and setting pieces; many things are cooking in the realms and ready to explode in the finale. The Delmira situation and politicking are stuff that interest me the most.

‘All I want is a life with you, Embers. A life where we’re not constantly fighting battles or chasing prophecies or cures. Just . . . a simple life. With you.’
Wren swallowed the lump in her throat. ‘And if I can’t give that to you?’
‘Then I’ll take whatever you can offer and thank the Furies every day for it.’

Now, the romance: I love Wren and Torj a lot, they work amazingly together, I adore their moments of connection and caring, the ones of bickering and the ones of chemistry. I love that it’s not just attraction, they talk, they see and love every little aspect of each other. I adore how they are a power couple also in a fight, each bringing a different skill to the table and saving each other. After the end of the previous book, I knew I was in for angst, longing and yearning, and it did not disappoint.

‘Do you know what it’s like to want someone so badly you can’t breathe? And to know that no matter what, you can’t have them? They can never be yours?’

The tension between them is high and Torj certainly does long, ache and burn for Wren and would do anything to protect her, worries about her, everything is for her; and really, Wren would do anything for him as well, they both care so much about the other. I loved that Wren knew that Torj was full of s*** and still wanted her and I loved her decisiveness in tormenting him (he did deserve it a bit) and in searching for the truth.
And when they finally come together their chemistry and smut is chef kiss and on fire🔥🥵
And I’m so glad that they end up in a place of trust, honesty and facing it all together.

‘I’m with you no matter what, Embers. With you ’til the very end.’
‘Even through this?’ Wren’s voice broke.
Torj’s words were raw as he stood, closing the gap between them and taking her in his arms. ‘Through anything.’

Kind of predicted the cliffhanger and my opinion on the trope depends on how it’s handled, when done well it can create intense and so good moments, and, like I said, thank Lord Wren and Torj are facing it side by side, so I have faith here,

Tell me this isn’t goodbye. Torj’s voice echoed in her mind as the soul bond danced between them.
I could never tell you goodbye.

and it does leave me needing the next book right now.

‘You stand at my side.’ Wren’s fingers closed over his, gold and lightning joining them as one. ‘And we destroy them all. Together.’

Thorns & Fire plunges us right back into the captivating, richly imagined world of Thezmarr, picking up in the wake of Torj’s heart-wrenching decision to sever his Soul Bond with Wren. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear there’s far more to the bond than either of them could have expected. Determined to protect Wren at all costs, Torj must wrestle with his lingering feelings—can he keep her safe without acknowledging the depth of their connection?

Meanwhile, Wren is on her own journey, trying to navigate her place in a world that constantly demands more from her. As a gifted alchemy student at Drevenor and one of the lost heirs to a broken kingdom, Wren faces impossible choices as the Midrealms stand on the brink of destruction once again. Her growth throughout this book is incredible—she’s no longer the isolated poisoner from book one. She’s becoming a true leader.

Helen Scheuerer’s writing continues to blow me away. She does not miss. After Iron & Embers became my first five-star read of the year, I was nervous about the sequel living up to it—but Thorns & Fire delivers in every way. With each new instalment, we get deeper into the Thezmarr lore, uncovering a world that is as beautiful as it is brutal. The expansion of the mythology and political tension is masterful.

One of my favourite aspects of this book is the villain: a mysterious figure cloaked in darkness and alchemy, who twists Wren’s own creations into weapons. The way he manipulates the victims of the first war is chilling—and yet, completely understandable. Wren’s empathy toward them adds so much complexity to her character. She knows change is necessary, and her final choice in the book (yes, the one involving her sister) had me tearing up, even though I saw it coming.

And then there’s Torj and Wren. These two just work. Helen writes their dynamic with so much care—balancing secrets, sacrifice, and longing—without falling into the dreaded miscommunication trope. Their romance feels earned and never drags. The emotional tension, the subtle spice, the cliffhanger ending... chef’s kiss. I already can’t wait for book three to see how Wren’s bold plan unfolds.

We also get more time with beloved side characters—Kip and Cal especially continue to shine. And that Bloodteller name drop? I nearly screamed. If we don’t get more of that in the next book (or even a spin-off), I will riot. Honestly, I’d read a whole book about his kidnapping escapades alone—it would be both tragic and hilarious.

I’m still in awe that Helen is releasing all three books of this trilogy in a single year. It feels like we’ve barely had to wait, and yet each instalment is packed with so much depth and development.

If you loved the Legends of Thezmarr series or are a fan of dark fantasy with heart, Thorns & Fire is an absolute must-read. I’m officially obsessed with Helen Scheuerer’s world-building, romance, and characters—and I need to dive into her entire backlist ASAP.

« You’re allowed to wobble. You’re allowed to have a gloomy day. But this is not your forever. This is not the day to base all other days on. »

Iron & Embers was one of my favourite reads of the year. Sadly, this one felt very much like a filler book to me. Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoyed much of it but I kept hoping things would pick up and I was disappointed on that font.

« It’s very you…
- What? Messy and chaotic?
- No. Wild and extraordinary. »

The romance was giving. It’s very much romance centred - especially after everything that happened in the first book - there’s lots of banter, teasing and fighting. I loved the romance and I was initially going to rate this 4 stars but the ending was so rushed.

« Just because it’s the way things have always been, doesn’t mean it’s the right way. »

I loved the cast of characters. Wren, Torj, Cal, Kipp, Zavier, Thea & Wilder are all very great characters and they’re fun to follow. I will admit I was annoyed with Dessa in this one and felt she didn’t really add anything to the story.

« Every attempt, every failure, is a step forward. »

The ending was very rushed for a book that slow cooked the plot until the very end. I was disappointed by the turn it took and was baffled at everything that kept happening out of no where… I hope the next book fixes all of this!

« But it’s not about staying or looking strong. It’s about getting through it in whatever way you can. »

It was such an amazing BR with my beauty twin though 🥹 💯 stars 💗

the deepest silence falls just before the world tears itself apart, where fate balances on the edge of a blade, choosing which way to fall.

following on from my read of iron & embers, helen scheuerer became an absolute favourite author of mine; even landing herself on my list of auto-buy authors. her writing leans towards more simplistic, but her ability to construct an interesting tale goes beyond that—it’s detailed, complex and engaging. between the thorough and ever evolving world-building; the unfolding battle against newfound enemies; the heartfelt and emotional scenes, intensified with sexual tension between our leading characters; and a new focus on the kingdoms’ histories and recent politics, there’s so much to love about this series and this author’s writing.

nothing then would’ve prevented me from reading thorns & fire, so when pan macmillan australia contacted me with an amazing opportunity to read this sequel in advance, i did not hesitate to accept the incredible offer with utmost graciousness! how the events unfolded and the tragic moments that occurred in the ending of iron & embers, affecting torj and wren in irrevocable ways, my frail emotions couldn’t handle another second not knowing what transpires next in torj and wren’s challenging journey. the second book in the ashes of thezmarr series is heavier on the romance, and underlines the difficulties of overcoming heartbreak and practicing forgiveness amongst navigating the many unanswered questions of why did this happen?

the thing between wren and the warsword was beautiful, like the rose she had been so desperately trying to propagate… but it was not without its thorns, and it had left them both bleeding more times than she could count.

♡ elwren embervale
as much as i adored thea in the legends of thezmarr series, the youngest embervale sister has maintained a soft spot in my heart. wren is complex; a multi-faceted character who’s so undeniably brave and fierce, especially when faced with adverse situations. during wren’s moments in drevenor academy, we witnessed her knowledge and experiences challenged, transforming wren into an even more formidable character—woman—as she overcame her struggles. we know that she’s bright and intelligent, but thorns & fire truly emphasised her capabilities as she worked tirelessly and endlessly to uncover the hidden enemies secrets while navigating the pressures of being one of the lost heirs of delmira. there’s nothing more admirable than a determined woman who’s bound for extraordinary things and proves that she’s destined to achieve them.

“furies know i have tried to stay away. i have tried to protect you from this. but the force of it, the force of you… i can’t take it any more. i want you, wren. i want you so badly i can’t breathe.”

♡ torj elderbrock
our beloved warsword continues to be the same stoic man we’ve come to love and adore across the series. he acts almost unaffected following the ending of the last book, but behind his untouched attitude are feelings that linger—a man who pines and yearns for the woman his soul is forever intertwined with. torj is this strong character who’s reliable and someone who carries around more emotion than we sometimes realise; he also harbours this fear of being a burden to others, which hones a selfless nature and a lot of goodness about him. he’s essentially this enormous cinnamon roll you cannot resist loving because there’s so much love for him to give and receive in return.

“that man burns for you, wren. the sooner you both catch alight the better, lest you set the whole world ablaze.”

♡ torj elderbrock + wren embervale
the combination of clenching heartache, endless pining and simmering tension is flawless. it made torj and wren’s fractured relationship feel more worthwhile when they eventually reconnected and embark on healing the cracked pieces. until that point, i loved the banter shared between them as they bickered and the flirtatious notes underneath the humorous witticisms—unadultered sexual tension, i almost combusted reading these exchanges. it was a subtle reminder of the unconditional love and irrevocable bond they share even when certain moments felt dire. this time round, the lacking communication somewhat frustrated me. us, as the readers, know and understand the reasons for the bear slayer’s actions, but leaving wren in the dark with no answers or even an inkling filled me with irrational annoyance. i shouldn’t be too mad—hence, irrational—because it resulted in slow burn, mutual pining afterall.

‘if i feel old, you must feel fucking ancient.’ his friend added with a wry grin.
‘oh, fuck off, hawthorne.’

♡ the side characters
i love found families—a common statement from me, especially when reviewing a fantasy series. the inclusion of old, familiar characters and newest additions to the friendship groups is akin to coming home. it’s intimate and comforting seeing characters we know and love return. the main characters of the legends of thezmarr series—thea embervale and wilder hawthorne—make more appearances and seeing the two embervale sisters bond is so heartwarming, meanwhile the warswords continue to be the brothers-in-arms we’ve come to know. what i love about thea and wilder is the grounding forces they’ve become for wren and torj, providing them with support and encouragement when they needed it most. side characters shouldn’t detract the leading characters, but rather enrich them and that’s what we’re always blessed with in the thezmarrian world. likewise, cal and kipp return in snippets, offering the comedic relief we’ve come to appreciate from these other warswords; especially kipp, more specifically when he created the forced “my wife” situation. dessa and zavier return as wren’s friends at drevenor academy, and knowing wren was able to find genuine friendship in her fellow alchemists

thorns & fire is more character and romance driven, but that fact doesn’t diminish this book’s enjoyability. helen scheuerer delivers a book that adds to the overarching long-plot through character development and other more subtle ways. as much as i love a moving plotline, it was nice to slow down and come to appreciate how far the characters have come without an incessant need to be thrown into tense action and endless trials. i’ve been fortunate to receive an advanced copy of silver & smoke, the last and final book of the ashes of thezmarr series, but as much as i love this entire series and the world we’ve come to know it feels like home, i don’t want it to end!

ashes of thezmarr

thorns & fire — 4 stars

This book had me riveted from the jump. I was so anxious to see what was happening with Torj and Wren. We were left on such a cliffhanger for them after the events of Iron and Embers. My heart was in shambles.

Thorns & Fire jumped right back into it and we start to learn more about the strange revelations of the previous book. As well as deal with the fall out of the mess Torj made of this bond with Wren. He has a lot of explaining to do and she is not going to let him off easy.

There was more alchemy, poisons, palace intrigue, old enemies, and plenty of adventure along the way. The chemistry between Wren and Torj was always at the center though and even if I could see a few of the revelations coming that did not lessen the impact.

I love these two so much. They are a spark to a flame and the banter is next level. Torj is growly and protective. Wren is intelligent and takes no shit. They are quite the pair.

I had an ARC of this title, but I had to grab the audio. I loved the audio of book 1 so much, that I put off reading this til I could get it. It was narrated in a dual style by Matt Haynes & Emilia Bauer. I highly recommend you listen to this series if you like audios.

2.5 on the spice scale

Okay — I’m going to be real with you all right now. If you like fantasy, especially romantasy books and have not read The Legends of Thezmarr series, drop kick your entire TBR and start it IMMEDIATELY! You have no idea the amazing world you are sleeping on!

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙨 & 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 is the second book in the spinoff series, The Ashes of Thezmarr. This series follows Wren, Thea’s younger sister, and Torj, a Warsword. This book, WOW I have no words. It picks up pretty much right where 𝙄𝙧𝙤𝙣 & 𝙀𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 leaves off and Wren is desperately trying to figure out where Torj and her went wrong. While seeking those answers, Wren is tasked with creating the antidote to the magic stealing poison used by the rebels in order to advance in her academy for alchemy. My mind was SPINNING during this book. I fell more in love with both Wren and Torj, my heart was breaking for them and cheering them on simultaneously throughout this book. Wren proves that she is just as much as a solider as her sister in this book, when strength and power can be stolen and alchemy is the only way to win.

We uncover so many answers but are left with like a thousand more! 🤣 in true Helen fashion, the ending makes your jaw drop and want to scream and beg for the next book! We get to see our favorite familiar characters, Thea, Wilder, Cal, Kipp, and it wouldn’t be complete without a trip to The Laughing Fox! This book was *chef’s kiss* and it was an honor to receive an ARC!

”The mind is a blade, but many minds make an army.”

I have so much on my mind, but there are some prevailing thoughts amongst all the shock, pain and hope after having finished Thorns & Fire literally half an hour ago. With this book, Helen Scheuerer just became an auto-buy author for me. As we’re still 3 months away from this trilogy coming to an end, I’m thinking I might begin my journey into ”Legends of Thezmarr”, which is a series that takes place before ”Ashes of Thezmarr”. Don’t worry if it’s the Ashes that calls out to you more - I have ventured into Thezmarr with that and I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything. Going back to the prequel series will feel like coming back home. Thezmarr already does feel like home to me. Having just finished the book tonight, I might go back to this review once my emotions have settled a bit.

”I didn’t fight in the f*cking shadow war so a man could tell me where my place is.”

We’re thrown straight into action, which mirrors the first book in the trilogy. Helen Scheuerer creates the world you immediately feel a part of as if we’re walking alongside Wren and Torj. At no point did I feel as if we’re bombarded - instead, we’re discovering more and more about the world; making the reading experience exciting. I was glued to the book for days, BUT THE LAST 5-10% FELT LIKE TORJ WAS BATTERING ME WITH HIS HAMMER. What was that ending. I both love and hate it. Furies save me. Helen, I bow down to you.

Some things you can expect:
- second chance
- one tent
- brooding bodyguard
- mystery
- political intrigue
- found family
- yearning (oh my god THE YEARNING)
- growing into yourself
- embracing one’s strengths

P.S.: A silly thought of mine is that - this trilogy mends the heartbreak over the change in actors playing Geralt in ”The Witcher” - no, I’m not over it and never will be.

P.S.(2): Lucien, Carrion and Kipp all sit at the same table. Will not elaborate further.

P.S.(3): The stargazing scene. That’s all I’m going to say.

Thank you to NetGalley, Helen Scheuerer, and Pan Macmillan for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review. Thorns & Fire is out as of this week!

01/08/2025: I AM NOT OKAY.

Pre-read (27/06/2025): ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED READS OF 2025 AND I JUST GOT AN ARC TODAY 🥰 HUGE thanks to Helen Scheuerer, Pan Macmillan and NetGalley!

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to feel the effects of booktok not just on the publishing process, but on the quality of the books I'm reading as well. To start, I absolutely loved the Legends of Thezmarr series, the series that this is a spin-off of. And in that series my favourite side character were Torj and Wren, the leads of this trilogy. And yet, this series just isn't delivering in the way I hoped it was, and I feel like that is because the book is trying to be widely appealing to booktok. Torj and Wren's story felt so unique at first, but it's slowly starting to follow the same beats as every popular booktok "romantasy". Not to mention, I feel like the smut:romance ratio is off, probably for the same reason. I felt like there were more scenes of smut than of actual romantic growth. As a whole, I did still enjoy this book. As I mentioned, I really love this world and these characters. I'm just hoping the conclusion to the trilogy helps this story find its footing as it's own unique adventure.

I fear that if Helen writes it, I will be swooning over it for years to come.

Book two in the Ashes of Thezmarr series DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The plot got more intricate and intense (lots of missions, experiments, revelations galore), characters grew more into their roles, the side characters we all know and love were still providing all of the laughs, and the LONGING and YEARNING was so intense that I found myself audibly sighing to the point I was losing air…

Again, I looooove the alchemy aspect of this series. The experiments, the plants, the tests, i just found it all so interesting. And I loved watching Wren grow and learn throughout the process. I also was hooked on the people’s vangaurd plot. This whole uprising aspect was tense, mysterious, and provided for a great fantasy plot behind all of the romance.

I also LOVED the outcome for some of our characters and the decisions they were forced to make. It fit so well to their characters stories, and even though I predicted the outcome fairly quickly, I was still THRILLED when it came to pass.

If you loved the romance in book one, I fear you will be crippled by it in book two. After the ending of I&E, I knew there was going to be some pining, but OH MY GOD, did Helen bring the fire. The amount of yearning and longing we experienced between Torj and Wren was sooooo painful in the best way. My heart hurt so much for them, and when we finally get those special moments, my heart soared. I absolutely adore these two, and they are the definition of true love. The amount they give and sacrifice for one another. And how much they TRY for each other. Ugh SWOON. Torj is for sure a top tier man, and Wren grew into such a strong, fierce, and compassionate character. I ADORED them.

Ugh and that ending. THAT ENDING. My heart hurt so much, but I’m trying to remain hopeful for the final installment. I cannot WAIT for the conclusion to Wren and Torj’s story.

Ugh, Torj and Wren have me in a chokehold!

Thorns & Fire is book 2 in the Ashes of Thezmarr series and it picks up about 2 weeks after the devastating end of Iron & Embers. I am absolutely feral for the delicious yearning and tension in this book! I could not put this book down and Helen had me crying again within the first few chapters. Just give me all the angst, Helen!!!

I am quite obsessed with our Bear Slayer. His devotion to his Wren, even his self sacrificing BS, and his painful past call to me. He just needs to realize he deserves love and happiness 😭

I love Wren too and love watching her find her inner strength. She is such a fierce FMC and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her stand up for herself and doing what she feels is right for her family and kingdom.

And while the slow burn, tension-filled romance calls to me, this series also has a compelling plot full of court politics, magical mysteries and an evil lurking around the corner. We also can never forget how amazing Helen does the found family trope with all the awesome side characters. I'm so looking forward to book 3 and seeing how this series wraps up! I'm already planning on doing a reread before the finale, which I'm sure is going to be epic!

Scheuerer delivered another smash hit with Thorns & Fire. I read this book start to finish in under 24 hours, and it would’ve been less but life got in the way of my reading time. This picks up following the ending of Iron & Embers as Torj and Wren are forced to navigate the fall out from Torj’s decision. I felt that Scheuerer handled the pacing in this book incredibly well. There was a lot that needed to happen in terms of character growth/relationship growth, but it was balanced beautifully with political machinations and fight sequences. I felt that the relationship between Wren and Torj was thought out and approached with care. Both characters needed to put in work, and I appreciated that it wasn’t an easy path to each other. I really appreciated that we got to see another side of Wren - she felt more vulnerable and relatable in this book while struggling with trying to get her alchemy just right. I also adore the cameos that Scheuerer adds to the story. I especially loved getting to see ore of the sisterly moments between Wren and Thea. I don’t think I can review a Thezmarr story without mentioning Kipp. He may be a side character but he brings so much to the story with his masterful strategies and expertly delivered comedic moments. I read this via audiobook and enjoyed the narration by both Bauer and Haynes. The narration was clear, easy to understand, and thoroughly immersed readers in the story. I was fully engaged and did not want to stop listening. Both Bauer and Haynes captured the essence of their respective characters and build on their chemistry. This book will rip your heart out by the end and have you begging Scheuerer to do it all over again.

I have no words…this book was the perfect sequel to continue wren and torj’s story. it picked up right where book one left off and that was a painful reminder in of itself but then there was comedic relief, forced proximity, crazy reveals, and scenes that kept me on my toes. ofc that ending gave me no sense of relief and I need book three in my hands now.

not including any quotes for obvious reasons but let’s just say I highlighted a LOT of great quotes 🤭 huge thank you to helen and team for giving me an e-arc and for allowing me to be apart of the thorns & fire street team! and thank you to net galley for the sending me the audiobook.

ALC Review

🥀 Thorns & Fire by Helen Scheuerer
🔥 The Ashes of Thezmarr, Book 2
🎙️ Narrated by Emilia Bauer & Matt Haynes
🗓️ Releases 7/31/25

5⭐️

Oh Midrealms, it’s SO good to be back- and back with an absolute BANG! Sequels are tough but Helen has a magic touch. Thorns & Fire was a masterpiece, and in my opinion, even better than its predecessor. While Iron & Embers set the stage, Thorns & Fire stole the show. Everything I enjoyed about book one (the alchemy, mystery, & emotions) was expanded and delved into deeper in book 2!

I loved that we got more of all our favorite side characters from Thezmarr and more Dessa and Zavier. The moments between Wren and Thea were so touching and powerful- I loved seeing them together in this way. Kipp, my chaotic love, will always be the comedic relief when you need it most and the best side character ever written (I said what I said).

The world building continues to build on the foundation poured in book one. It is wonderfully intricate yet easy to grasp. The action was tense and paced well throughout. The tension, emotion, spice and romance was spectacular. I may be a Wilder girlie, but after this book I carved out space for two warswords in my heart.

Narration: The audiobook was a great way to enjoy this! The dual narration brought both characters to life, and I particularly enjoyed Emilia Bauer’s performance. Her voice fit Wren perfectly and I enjoyed the subtle shifts for Thea, as well as Torj’s voice during Wren’s POVs. I also thought both narrators did an excellent job of narrating the spicy scenes and the action sequences! While I enjoyed Matt Hayne’s performance, I really struggled with the voice he used for Wilder. Overall, the audio was clear, crisp, consistent and well produced! I had no issues following along even with the heavier world building. I would reccomend this on audio!

Overall, I loved this book and could not put it down. I enjoyed book 1, but this took it above and beyond. I cannot wait for what’s next!

Thank you so much to Helen Scheuerer, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for an ALC of this book. It was my pleasure to read and provide my honest review.

Helen knows how to write a damn book! Captivating doesn’t even begin to cover it. I stayed up all night to finish because I had to see how this one ended. This cliffhanger threw me, but I realized it made perfect sense—looking back, there were signs.

We still have a lot of unanswered questions, like what info did Kip give Wren that she's been holding on to?
I will be on pins and needles waiting for the next book.

Helen has absolutely smashed it again! Iron & Embers left us with so many questions and desperate for answers as to what comes next for Wren and Torj, and Thorns & Fire does not disappoint at all!

We pick up the story a few weeks after the end of book one, with our favourites all still reeling from the events at the end of the book. The character development in this story is phenomenal, Wren truly surpassed all expectations and broke free from the typical "miscommunication" mould. This is the story of a woman who takes things into her own hands, does her own research and makes her own decisions without waiting around for a man confess, or tell her what to do. And some of the scenes with her not only facing off to Torj, but also standing up to the male leaders of the Midrealms and asserting her position among the rulers were just perfection!

Helen's stories are beautiful examples of strong women finding their feet in what is very much a male-centric world, questioning the patriarchy and proving themselves time after time.

I loved the little peeks of Wilder and Thea, once again, and I adore the sisters' interactions and the way they support and uphold each other through everything.

If you're looking for a 10/10 epic fantasy, full of political intrigue, hidden identities, mysterious prophecies and feminine rage, but you also want steaming hot spice, heart-melting romance and desperate longing, this book hits every mark. I cannot wait for book three to finally uncover the secrets at Drevenor!

When I was halfway through the first book of the first Thezmarr series I was sold. So, I took a leap of fate, and pushed myself to read the entire series in record-time, and requested a digital arc for this book through Netgalley. Tor Bramble granted me a copy and it was a beautiful adventure.

In the first book in this spin-off series I needed a little time to get used to the characters, the setting and the dynamics. But this second book? This second book was everything I had hoped it would be and then a little more. I, of course, am not gonna give away too many spoilers, but from the moment the main plot shows its face it was impossible to put the book down. I had to know what was gonna happen next.

I also think the character growth in this book is amazing. Wren is a complicated character. She's hardened through the war she has fought, she clearly deals with some post traumatic stress disorder and it seems that her emotions and empathy have taken a huge hit due to her losses and pain. However, it's clear that in this book Wren is slowly healing. Not only because she finds love again, but also because she finds out what's truly important for her and what she's willing to fight for.

I also liked the plot and the pace in this book. Yes, in the first place this book is a romance. We're watching two characters fight the attraction they feel until they no longer can and then we know there's gonna be something keeping them apart by the end of the book. However, this world is wonderful, the politics are complicated and intriguing, the stakes are insanely high and there are a couple of characters I do not trust at all. I can't wait for the next book!

Excuse me while I process my emotions and thoughts for the next 3-5 months.

Thorns & Fire completely consumed me. Helen Scheuerer has this way of writing that makes every emotion feel sharp and real. I laughed, I teared up, I clutched the book to my chest more than once.

Wren’s strength and vulnerability hit me hard. Watching her come into her power, question everything she’s been told, and fight for her people? Absolutely breathtaking.

And Torj. My gods. The grumpy loyalty, the restraint, the constant quiet devotion—he ruined me. Their bond is slow burn, soul-crushing, everything.

This book is full of found family, court politics, magical secrets, and heartbreak. It’s slower than Iron & Embers, but every moment feels earned. The tension is unbearable in the best way.

Thank you, Helen, for giving us these characters. I already know I’ll be rereading this before the next book lands in my hands.

- Enemies-to-lovers
- Bodyguard / charge
- Touch-her-and-💀
- Dark academia
- Forced proximity
- Heir to the throne
- Found Family

“I’m his to protect…and he’s mine.”

Following Torj’s ultimate sacrifice, breaking their soul bond to save Wren’s life, it appears that the two are destined to remain apart. However, as dark storm clouds gather and Thezmarr stands on the brink of war once more, their fates are once again intertwined. Delmira has awoken, and an Embervale Queen must rise to take her rightful place on the throne to protect the midrealms. Meanwhile, Wren and Torj find themselves at the centre of a prophecy that foretells the fate of their world and will test their power, love, and loyalty to the limit. They must swiftly decide whether the ancient magic that binds them will ultimately be their salvation or their downfall…

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025, thank you so much Pan MacMillan for the ARC! The second book in the Ashes of Thezmarr series was everything I hoped for. Thorns and Fire is a captivating romantasy with a slow-burn which will keep you hooked until the end!

Like Iron and Embers, book two alternates between Torj and Wren’s POV with short chapters and fast pacing. The plot picks up a few weeks after Iron and Embers, as Torj / Wilder and Wren/ Thea are quickly thrown into new respective quests. There’s lots of tension and angst in the first half as the main characters try to figure out their love lives whilst seeking a way to turn the tide of the impending war! It’s a brilliant adventure with lots of twists and turns in the plot. By the end we are left with as many questions as answers on a nail-biting cliffhanger!

I absolutely love Scheuerer’s world-building; the scale and immersive experience of her books are I think among the best in Romantasy! The Ashes of Thezmarr series offers so much - there are epic adventures, thrilling quests, formidable villains, and hilarious banter. The cast of characters is brilliant, with well-developed arcs that keep you engaged. You’ll find familiar faces from the Legends of Thezmarr series (I’m still in love with Kipp after six books - I’m here until the very end holding out for his HEA!), and there are also new faces and political power plays too.

While I still recommend reading The Legends of Thezmarr first to fully appreciate the characters and their world, Thorns and Fires definitely has enough memories and reflections to make it make sense as a great standalone series too.

I was so excited to read this. I loved it and can’t wait for the final instalment to this epic trilogy. But at the same time I also never want it to end!

I devoured this book in a single day and am once again in awe of Helen and her brilliant mind. The way she can rip my heart out and have me begging for more is a testament to how much I have fallen in love with the midrealms and every single one of these characters.

The amount of pining, longing, tension, and healing in this book rivals book one!! I wanted to simultaneously shake and hug both Torj and Wren through out the entire story. The way that they stood by each other’s side, no matter what, proves just how made for each other they really are. After all- They are always stronger together.

And with plenty of secrets, betrayals, and schemes leading up to a massive ending, Wren and Torj are going to need their found family more than ever!

I cannot wait to see how they will make their way out of this mess when Silver & Smoke releases later this year!

The world of Thezmarr is one of my favorite places to be and I couldn’t wait to dive back into Wren and Torj’s story! If you haven’t started your journey to the midrealms, you need to bump this up your TBR list immediately! I loved Thea and Wilder but there’s just something about Wren and Torj that have me in a chokehold. The tension and yearning is palpable, the drama and action is enticing, and the magic system is fantastic. I felt allllll the emotions while reading their sequel story and need the next book ASAP.

The Lovely: This book was everything I’d hoped for and more. When and Torj have such a complicated relationships, especially after what happened at the end of book one. I loved seeing them both work through what happened with their usual banter and conflicted emotions (and a hairpin).

Also Lovely: I also loved the found family aspect of the story, especially as we spent more time with Wilder and Thea. We also get to see more old friends, as well as new ones. The support (and giggles) for Wren warmed my little heart.

Recommendation: I started the book messaging a friend, who had already read it, to ask how much chocolate and tissues I would need. I didn’t cry hard core but definitely got weepy. I can’t help it - I just love these characters so much. The third and final book in the series is expected to be released in December 2025. If you like an epic fantasy romance with unforgettable characters and a story you can’t put down, I think you would like this book.

Thorns & Fire is a powerful follow-up to Iron & Embers. Dare I say I was even MORE enthralled with this book?

I love angst, and T&F had it in spades!

In true Helen fashion, the writing was so flawless and smooth. She left no stone unturned when it came to storytelling, filling in gaps you hadn't even been thinking of (but then you're like "oh yeah!"), and weaving so many plot points together seamlessly so they came full circle.

I loved the slow burn and healing between Wren and Torj. My heart broke for them many times, but there were such sweet (and seriously HOT) moments between them, I'll be revisiting my highlights for sure! 😆

The side characters, banter and political scheming set amongst an alchemy background was such an immersive experience.

I am already so excited for Silver & Smoke. I know the final book in Wren and Torj 's story is going to culminate in the most epic way possible. 😍

this was such an amazing sequel and a continuation of torj & wren’s story! stepping back into the midrealms is something i look forward to every time!!

i went through a million different emotions. the angst, the yearning, the pining!! oh my god i absolutely devoured this. and let’s not forget our favorite comedic relief characters that had me giggling and kicking my feet (kipp ilysm). the found family is one of my favorite things across this universe and i can never get enough of them. 🥹

the ending of this book had me in shambles!! i have so many questions on how everything is gonna play out. i cannot express my excitement for final book in the trilogy to see the conclusion of this wild adventure! 🫶🏻

Dare I say Torj has taken Wilders #1 spot?
The PINING in this book and tension was 🥵🥵 Torj would do ANYTHING for Wren and his protectiveness went to a new level, which I loved! Wren per usual is so smart, and her stubbornness in this book was so relatable. My heart hurt when it came to Torj and his emotions/insecurities this book as well as the weight on Wrens shoulders.

I ate this book up, I loved the traveling, friendships, sisterhood, and romance. The ending of course had my jaw on the floor and I might have cried a little, lol.
We get to see all of our favorite characters again, and fall even more in love with some new side characters (looking at you Dessa ☺️).
I love Helen’s writing and am so grateful to receive an arc! Will be impatiently waiting for the final book!

Sadly, this felt more like a filler book in terms of plot - to work out the fall out of book one regarding Wren and Torj’s relationship and the secrets Torj is hiding.

Saying that, the ending sets up beautifully for book three and I have better hopes for that. Especially because there will be a whole lot more of Kipp. Oh, and Wren and Torj tension.

‘You’re playing with fire, Embers . . .’ he warned.
‘You’re forgetting how much I like to go up in flames,’ she whispered in his ear.

Wren is learning she is not alone.
Kipp still meddles in their relationship.
There’s a one-tent troupe.
There is a lot of jealous possessiveness.

I missed the academia setting, the trials, the bantering. There is a lot of travelling and catching people up on what happened in the previous series, Blood and Steel.

But, like I said, it sets up an explosive finale.

Arc gifted by Tor Bramble.

What can I say... this story is interesting and full of suspense, BUT what about this extraordinary love story?!?!?!?!? No matter how the story unfolds, I'm going to devour the next book to find out what happens to them. So far, I've worried so much about them that I've got new wrinkles on my forehead, and my heart has skipped a beat so many times that I'm not sure it will ever return to its normal rhythm... In short: I am a huge fan of their unconditional (but chaotic) love!
