This authoritative reference work describes in detail the more than 400 Palestinian villages destroyed or depopulated during the 1948 war. The body of the text is devoted to the villages themselves: each village entry comprises statistical data and several narrative sections. Field research by former residents and guides is used to pinpoint the precise location of village sites. A wide variety of Arab and Western sources is used to summarize village history before 1948 and to synthesize information about its topography, architecture, institutions and economic activity. Israeli and Arab accounts focus on the military operations that led to the conquest of the village. Entries also contain a description of the current status of the site, including post-1948 Israeli settlements established on confiscated village lands. Several hundred photographs, a number of informative maps and five appendices enhance the text prepared by more than thirty participants over a period of nearly six years.

An incredible work of scholarship. At the end of the British Mandate Period in Palestine, 54% of the indigenous Christian and Muslim Arab population were expelled by the Zionist minority. This work documents the history, composition and disappearance of the villages these exiled Arabs once inhabited.

A significant, weighty, urgent tome. Both a history textbook and geography reference manual, it reads as an obituary for what once was.

"كي لا ننسى" عنوان لعمل لم تكن غايته وضع تاريخ أصيل أو شامل للقرى الفلسطينية المهجر سكانها، وليس غرضه أن يكون تاريخياً وعسكرياً وافياً يروي سقوط هذه القرى، ولا من مطامحه أنه يكون تاريخاً عاماً لحرب 1948؛ بل إن "كي لا ننسى" يجمع في شكل ميسّر ما يمكن اعتباره لقطة فوتوغرافية لكل من القرى الفلسطينية الأربعمئة ونيف التي هجّرت إسرائيل أهلها ثم دمرتها، هذه اللقطة لهؤلاء القرى قبل تدميرها في سنة 1948، لقطة تشتمل على مواد إحصائية وطوبوغرافية وتاريخية ومعمارية وأثرية واقتصادية، فضلاً عن ظروف احتلال القرية وتهجير سكانها ووصف ما بقي منها. وما ينفرد هذا الكتاب به عن سواه من الدراسات الأخرى، إنما هو اعتماده الكثيف على الدراسات الميدانية، إضافة إلى الشكل والصيغة المعتمدين فيه. والحق يقال أن البحث الميداني يقع في موقع القلب من هذا الكتاب، سواء أكان لجهة تحقيق أضبط قائمة ممكنة للقرى المدمرة، المهجّر سكانها، أم لجهة التدوين الدقيق لحال كل من هذه القرى اليوم، بما في ذلك المستعمرات والمنشآت الإسرائيلية على أراضي كل منها.

وهذا الكتاب في جوهره، إذاُ معجم يعرض القرى المدمرة كلاً بمفردها، لكن ضمن إطار منطقتها وسياق الحوادث التي ذهبت بها، وهو محاولة لنفخ نسمة من الحياة في هامة اسم باقٍ، ورسم جسد على قدّ أرقام ونسب إحصائية، واسترجاع لمحة مما كان يميز تلك القرى الدارسة، وجملة القول فيه: إن المراد هو أن يكون لوناً من ألوان الرجعى والاستذكار.

The price of this book was enormous, but I really wanted to read it. So, I asked the library of my university, Washington and Lee, to buy it and I said this book is an amazing piece on Palestine and the history that remained after 1948. I was right. The information, the photos, and the data are all amazing. I encourage my fellow Palestinians in the U.S. and other countries to ask their schools libraries to get this book. It’s a great source for 1948.

أتذكر حينما كان سيدي (جدي) يجلس ليقرأ لنا عن قريتنا وقُرى الخليل من هذا الكتاب تحديدًا… كتاب بدا وكأنه موسوعة عن القرى الفلسطينية المهجرة. حاولت منذ ذلك الحين أن أجد نسخة منه في المكتبات، ولكن دون جدوى. لا تزال تفاصيله عالقة في ذاكرتي: غنية، دقيقة، لكنها لم تكن كافية بالطبع، لم تكن تنقل تمامًا ما حملته تلك القرى من حياة، من ناس، من نبض كان هناك ذات يوم… ورحل.

I still remember when my sedo (grandfather) used to read to us about our village and the villages of Al Khalil from this very book. It felt like an encyclopedia of the demolished Palestinian villages. I’ve tried to find it in libraries and bookstores ever since, but without success. I remember it was pretty recise, yet somehow not enough. Of course, no one can fully capture what those villages once carried… the life, the people, the heartbeat that once was… and is now gone

وكيف لنا أن ننسى.. ذاكرة عاصية عن النسيان ونعايشها على جلودنا ليل نهار!!! ما قدم للنقب في الكتاب القليل القليل، لكنه وكبحث معتمد يرجع لحاضرة بئر السبع رونقها الزاهي من جديد!

The great sincerity of this book is its greatest strength.

This book is done in the memory of those who died or were displaced and dispossessed. This book, as Khalidi makes clear, is not meant to turn back the clock and call for the reversal of history, but rather to honor those who had lost so much.

This is a terrific reference text. For an encyclopedic consultation for research on the Palestinian Exodus of 1947-1949, this book is mandatory reading, as it is authoritative.
