Lamb to the Slaughter is a story about the intertwining lives of three unlikely people in an Indiana Amish Community and the devastating results when a rebellious teenage girl is found shot to death in a corn field during the harvest.
Serenity Adams is the newly elected young sheriff in the country town of Blood Rock and besides dealing with the threatening behavior of her predecessor, she now has a dead Amish girl on her plate. The poor girl was probably accidentally shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl’s parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious. As she delves deeper into the secretive community that she grew up beside, she discovers a gruesome crime from the past that may very well be related to the Amish girl’s shooting. Serenity enlists the help of the handsome bad-boy building contractor, Daniel Bachman, who left the Amish when he was nineteen and has his own dark reasons to help the spunky sheriff solve the crime that the family and friends who shunned him are trying desperately to cover up. Serenity’s persistence leads her to a stunning discovery that not only threatens to destroy her blossoming romance with Daniel, but may even take her life in the end.

Did not finish. I didn't like the main character ... at all. If you want to read books about an Amish community, where the sheriff or chief of police is not Amish - don't waste your time on this book and go directly to the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo. Lamb to the Slaughter doesn't come close to any of the Kate Burkholder books. My opinion ... don't waste your time.

Hopkins woven a story that instantly pulls you in to the story and will keep you turning the pages!
The gripping story is about Serenity, the new sheriff in town. And although she's new, she already had a dead girl on her plate and as she was trying to solve the case, she was surprise by the nonchalant reaction of the Amish community since the dead girl was one of their own.
Serenity is the definition of badass! I miss reading female characters like her. She is a little stubborn, yes, but very strong and brave. And there's Daniel. Can I just say how I looove the Daniel POV's. Is there still guys out there like Daniel? Gosh, I hope so. The side characters were all written well and no one is a waste. They all have back stories that was explained and it made the story more interesting.
This was written in three POV's. Three!! I'll be honest and say that I'm not a fan of switching POV's but it worked really well in this story. Hopkins is an amazing writer and the whole story is just very easy to get into. The pacing is perfect and there's no dull chapter. I like getting inside of their heads (especially Daniel's).
The mystery is sooo well crafted. I actually suspected every character in the story and how the culprit was revealed was just impeccably done! As I progress in the story, I also found myself intrigued by the Amish community and their ways. I don't have any experience with any Amish but I would say that this was researched.
I'm really hoping though that this will be a series. I have a feeling that there's still hidden mysteries in Blood Rock and I want to see more of Serenity and Daniel!

I also received a copy of this book via Kismet in exchange for my honest opinion & review.
So what can I say about the book, I did initially dislike how the book jumped from the "now" with Serenity to the "past" with Naomi but once you get into the book it soon falls into a rhythm and I ended up not wanting to put it down. I soon became attached to the characters and what was happening to each of them. I enjoyed Karen Ann Hopkins way of writing and also I enjoy learning about the Amish culture, it is a fascinating culture.
The investigation begins by being one that seems to only concern the Amish but then there's a turn and it seems the death effects certain "plain people", some of which are quite close to the Sheriff herself. The book has drama, love, a strange culture, as well as mystery, suspense and a death. So I'd say there is something within the book for most readers.
My only disappointment was the ending, I really, really wanted it to say there was going to be a Bk2. How the book ends leaves a bit of a cliff hanger which could be the subject of the next book.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes! Would I recommend the book? Yes, I think it will appeal to a wide ranging audience. Would you read another book in this series if there is one? I would, I really hope this is just the beginning of a great series. Would you read other titles by Karen Ann Hopkins? I have read her Temptation Series and would look at anything else she writes too.

Vittima sacrificale è il primo volume della serie I segreti di Serenity’s Plain, edita dalla Hope Edizioni, in cui lo sceriffo della contea di Blood Rock, Serenity Adams, indaga sugli omicidi legati alla comunità Amish. Saranno tutti volumi auto conclusivi ma per meglio godersi le vicende legate alla crescita del personaggio è consigliabile seguire l’ordine di pubblicazione.
Serenity ha da poco assunto il ruolo di sceriffo quando viene ritrovato il corpo di Naomi, una giovane ragazza amish, in un campo di granoturco.
Il caso viene spacciato frettolosamente come incidente di caccia ma il sesto senso di Serenity la spinge a continuare ad indagare. Il muro di silenzio costituito dalla comunità contribuisce a rafforzare l’idea che stiano solo insabbiando la vicenda, inoltre le minacce ricevute da terzi aumentano la caparbietà dello sceriffo portandola ad avvicinarsi sempre di più ai segreti celati.
Grazie al contributo di Daniel, ex amish e ora inglese, Serenity proverà ad entrare a far parte della vita della comunità per carpire tutte le informazioni utili al funzionamento delle gerarchie.
Ma per una esterna non è semplice comprendere i dogmi che spingono uomini e donne ad aver una fede così salda, ma soprattutto ad abbandonare tutte le comodità della tecnologia per condurre una vita così dura.
Grazie a pov alternati e salti temporali, l’autrice ci fa vivere entrambi i mondi e conoscere quindi una cultura totalmente diversa dalla nostra. Entrambi i protagonisti appaiono però poco convincenti, in particolar modo Serenity, nonostante la sua posizione importante di sceriffo. Il tono generale con cui sono narrati i fatti resta piuttosto piatto e poco coinvolgente, ma mantiene l’attenzione per l’argomento della comunità Amish, così diversa dal nostro modo di vedere le cose. Per questo, nonostante i nei elencati, ho trovato molto affascinante l’ambientazione e quindi la scelta di sfruttare il mistero legato ai loro usi e ai costumi per contribuire a infoltire il mistero. Certamente ho voglia di scoprire le nuove vicende dello sceriffo, anche grazie ad un finale aperto molto interessante che fornisce al lettore informazioni sul nuovo capitolo e accende bene la sua curiosità.

I'm a sucker for an Amish mystery and Lamb to the Slaughter did not disappoint. The Amish community is a little creepy, but innocent at the same time and that's what I think I like about it. So far I've enjoyed reading about Serenity and Daniel. Serenity is believable as a Sheriff, although sometimes I want to hit her upside the head for being so stubborn and closed off to other people, especially to Daniel.
The only real criticism I have about this book and the others in the series is that it could have used better proofreading. There are several typos that include missing words, wrong words, and missing letters in words. I have been able to overlook those things and still enjoy the books so far. I'm definitely hooked.

I didn't like the back and forth pov between the current characters and I found Daniel especially annoying. The "romantic" scenes were written in the terms of bad romance novel tropes.
Not sure I buy that the Amish are much like they're portrayed in the novel, seemed like the majority of the Amish adult women were either abusive or had a mental illness, or both. The teenagers weren't much better. The Amish men were portrayed as stoic, close minded, and a bizarre combination of ignorant to the behavior of their wives and "all knowing" when it came to what their children were up to. Right up until the end, of course when they were all "surprised" by who the actual killer was. I'll give the author this, she did not reduce them to the tropes of the "peaceful Amish". However I think the author went too far the other way.
Overall, not a horrible book (I've read far worse) but be sure to skim over the "romantic" bits and just pretend you're not reading about an actual culture that exists and is being portrayed incorrectly.

The story was all right, but the book is very, very negative towards the Amish, unfairly so. The dialogue with Amish folks was not researched well, and was out of character. If you want a good Amish mystery, skip the Serenity series and try Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series.

This is an Amish Police Mystery, and this is the first book in the Serenity's Plain Secrets series. I enjoyed reading this book, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

You like small town settings and are curious about the Amish community. Hopkins does a great job of sharing small-town politics, Amish culture and dealing the issues that arise when dealing with criminal acts.
You like a nice, slow burning romance and aren’t looking for it to be all wrapped up in a neat bow at the end. I liked the chemistry between Serenity Adams and Daniel Bachman. The romance is definitely a side dish to the murder mystery, but an enjoyable one.
Strong, complex characters who are also flawed or damaged. Serenity is tenacious when it comes to solving crimes and seeking justice for the victim. She is skittish when it comes to relationships despite her obvious attraction, and warm fuzzy feelings towards Daniel. It was delightful watching them interact.
You enjoy tagging along on an investigation and digging up clues. Hopkins did a great job of creating suspects and offered up a suspenseful mystery with twists. She provided subtle clues that allows the reader to piece together the crime. The tale had multiple perspectives, including those of the victim. This gave us terrific insight into the character and the events leading up to crime. I had an inclination of who the killer was and I was pleased with how this tightly woven case unfolded. Hopkins gave me a satisfying, realistic conclusion to the investigation.
You like reading series that feature the same lead characters and like that each book focuses on a new case.
Lamb to the Slaughter was an easy, enjoyable read that I completely enjoyed. I was over the moon excited to hear that there will be more books in this series. Serenity and Daniel will solve cases involving Amish communities throughout the Midwest!

Cari lettori, oggi vi parlo di Vittima Sacrificale di Karen Ann Hopkins, un thriller autoconclusivo edito Hope Edizioni, primo della serie I segreti di Serenity’s Plain.
Il libro parla di una fuga, della ricerca di una libertà tanto agognata, ma anche di ribellione.
Tutto comincia quando, in un campo di granoturco a Blood Rock, viene trovato il corpo senza vita di Naomi.
Naomi è una ragazza amish, tutti credono che la sua morte sia stato un semplice incidente di caccia, ma Serenity Adams, il nuovo sceriffo della città, è fermamente convinta che si tratti di omicidio. Questa sua convinzione aumenta al funerale della ragazza, quando incontra per la prima volta i suoi genitori: la loro reazione fredda e distaccata lascia lo sceriffo esterrefatta. Tuttavia, conquistare la fiducia della comunità amish è un’impresa ardua, in quanto si tratta di persone molto diffidenti da tutto ciò che rappresenta il mondo esterno.
L’unico che sembra poterla aiutare nelle sue indagini è Daniel, un uomo che quando era un ragazzo giovanissimo, poco più grande della stessa Naomi, è fuoriuscito dalla comunità e dal quale Serenity è subito attratta.

Serenity, faresti meglio ad abituarti al fatto che non riceverai alcun aiuto dagli amish, durante le indagini. Non gli piacciono gli stranieri, soprattutto quelli che ficcano il naso nei loro affari.
Il libro si è rivelato molto interessante e avvincente. È la prima volta che mi affaccio al mondo thriller e devo dire che l’ho adorato!
Serenity Adamas è il nuovo sceriffo della città, Blood Rock è la sua casa dalla quale ha fatto ritorno per sfuggire alle violenze della città metropolitana, ma si ritrova catapultata a dover risolvere un omicidio in quello che ha sempre ritenuto un posto tranquillo.
Quello che mi è piaciuto di Serenity è stata la sua determinazione. È una donna risoluta, a tratti fredda, ma capirete che questa sua caratteristica è solo una maschera che la aiuta a proteggersi. Si fida solo del suo istinto ed è disposta a qualsiasi cosa pur di rendere giustizia a Naomi.
Ciò che fa insospettire sempre di più Serenity è l’atteggiamento di alcune persone; dopo aver effettuato i primi accertamenti rispetto al caso, inizia a mettere insieme i pezzi di un puzzle che sembra sempre più difficile da comporre.
Ti darò un piccolo suggerimento, visto che mi sento buono. Lasciali stare. Se questa vicenda della ragazza non li preoccupa più di tanto non vedo perché dovrebbe importare a noi. Fidati gli amish si prendono cura della propria gente.
Durante la lettura, l’autrice ci mostra le particolarità del mondo amish, le caratteristiche che li riguardano e la loro influenza sul caso.
Il mondo amish non è così pacifico come potrebbe sembrare: nascondono in realtà un lato oscuro che spesso viene omesso.
Serenity, infatti, si troverà dinanzi una comunità per nulla collaborativa: gli amish avranno la tendenza ad insabbiare alcune questioni tali da essere impunite, in quanto il senso di giustizia per queste persone è ancorata ad un concetto divino e non terreno.
Gli amish non accettano nessun tipo di influenza esterna, a partire dal fattore linguistico; infatti, la stragrande maggioranza di loro parla tradizionalmente un dialetto tedesco chiamato “tedesco della Pennsylvania” e ciò contribuisce a separarli dal resto della società e a rendere quindi la rottura del silenzio ancora più difficoltosa.
Nonostante questa grande difficoltà, Serenity continuerà a indagare sull’ indagine, mettendo in mostra ancor di più la sua tenacia che ho amato e che la caratterizza.
Ecco che le sue domande diventano sempre più assillanti nella sua testa: chi potrebbe essere l’assassino? E perché ha compiuto un gesto cosi estremo? Qual è la sua motivazione?
E per dare una risposta a queste sue assordanti domande e per poter guadagnare la fiducia di questa oscura comunità, ha bisogno di qualcuno che conosca bene quella gente, che conosca il loro modo di pensare e di agire.

Serenity già conosce Daniel Bachmann, noto adulatore e sciupafemmine, perché tempo prima si è occupato della riparazione del suo tetto.
Daniel sarà un partner perfetto nella risoluzione delle indagini e un grande aiuto per Serenity: come ex amish, conosce alla perfezione le loro usanze, sa quali siano le dinamiche che articolano il tessuto sociale di questa gente, e la sua famiglia, con la quale ha interrotto qualsiasi tipo di rapporto, come previsto dalle regole, ne fa ancora parte.
L’affiancamento a Serenity e l’indagine in corso sembra essere l’occasione giusta non solo per ricostruire in parte il rapporto con la famiglia, ma anche per avvicinarsi a Serenity , la quale ha colpito il suo sguardo sin dal loro primo incontro.
Ho molto apprezzato lo sviluppo psicologico di Daniel, inizialmente scettico riguardo le indagini, nelle quali successivamente troverà un’occasione di conquista e un viaggio nei suoi ricordi.
Daniel tornerà ad avere a che fare con la sua ex comunità e sarà in continua lotta con se stesso: da una parte rispetterà il loro modo di vivere e a tratti ne sentirà la mancanza; dall’altra ogni episodio che si verificherà, sarà per lui un monito che gli ricorderà il motivo per il quale è fuggito, amando la sua attuale libertà e possibilità di scegliere.

Non c’era dubbio che fosse una donna bellissima, anche con l’uniforme mascolina che indossava.
Ma la sua natura forte ed indipendente era sconcertante.
Forse era proprio il motivo per cui non si era accasata e non aveva figli.
Solo un uomo tutto d’un pezzo avrebbe potuto rubarle il cuore.
La narrazione in terza persona mi è stata utile per poter meglio capire i profili psicologici dei personaggi principali: credo che per una lettrice alle prime armi su romanzi gialli sia stato un perfetto espediente.
Ciò che ho apprezzato maggiormente è stato lo scorcio su una realtà cosi lontana da noi eppure ben consolidata soprattutto in America. Una realtà in qualche modo oscura che personalmente da atea convinta mi ha fatto apprezzare ancora di più la libertà di cui tutti noi godiamo ma che spesso non riusciamo a stimare perché in qualche modo scontata.
Karen Ann Hopkins credo che abbia centrato l’obiettivo: ha costruito, con una grande capacità descrittiva, una storia dal sapore nuovo, intrigante, appassionate che desta la curiosità anche dei più scettici.
Non vedo l’ora di leggere il secondo volume che aspetterò trepidante come una bambina per addentrarmi ancora nelle avventure di Serenity e della sua complicata storia con Daniel.

I loved this book! Never much of a mystery reader I was reluctant to read it but let me tell you I want to read more of them! Karen puts so much more into the story besides mystery. The characters of Serenity and Daniel have such depth you want to know their whole story. That's why I'm hoping this to will be a series just like Temptation.

THANK YOU for the "sneak peek" of "Lamb to Slaughter"! Love the title as well, the name says it all! This story truely BLEW ME AWAY"! Compelling and unpredictable from beginning to end. Brilliant and a MUST re-read for me! "Some Amish communities aren't so cozy"! How true that is and you, Karen have opened us up to "thought" on this with this book and your other works. Looking forward to more of your great books!

I really wish Goodreads had a .5 rating system. This is more a 3.5, but not really a 4. I really enjoy books about the Amish. It's where I go when I want to relax and feel some peace. This book, however, is more about the "dark" side of the Amish. While I still enjoyed it, it wasn't exactly peaceful. Having said that, it was still a good read.

A mixture of mystery and sadness
Lamb to the Slaughter is a novel about an Amish community in Indiana. To me it seemed to either be written by an Amish person or someone who was attempting to sound Amish. I thought it was a sad book and a little odd. It held my interest but I did not like the ending or lack thereof.

I happened upon this book accidentally - Amazon marketing. It was surprisingly good. I liked the characters which is always a good start. These mysteries involve the Amish community which is notorious for solving its own problems. We watch Serenity gain some credibility with the group as she is the new sheriff. The story is exciting and kept me reading.

Per sfuggire ai ricordi che la tormentano, Serenity Adams decide di lasciare la grande città per trasferirsi nel paesino di Blood Rock, lontano anni luce dagli efferati omicidi a cui era abituata. Beh, questo è quello che credeva lei perché, in effetti, sembra che la morte tenda a seguirla visto che, a solo due settimane dal suo arrivo nell’ameno paesino di campagna, si ritrova a dover investigare sulla morte di una giovane ragazza ritrovata morta in un campo di grano. Anche se, a prima vista, sembra trattarsi di un tragico incidente di caccia, c’è qualcosa che disturba profondamente Serenity e quando si rende conto che la famiglia della giovane accetta quasi passivamente quella morte, i suoi sospetti si fanno ancora più pressanti. Ma la giovane Noemi fa parte di una comunità amish molto chiusa e indagare non è per nulla semplice. Il sospetto che tutte quelle persone nascondano qualcosa di importante a scoprire l’identità dell’assassino è così forte che non le resta altro che avvalersi della collaborazione di Daniel, l’uomo che le ha ristrutturato casa e che, in passato, è stato membro proprio di quella comunità. Ha inizio quindi un gioco in cui si fingono fidanzati per entrare nelle grazie della famiglia di Daniel e osservare da vicino i modi di fare della comunità. Ma non è una cosa semplice, in primo luogo perché gli amish fanno cerchio intorno alla famiglia della vittima e poi perché tra Serenity e Daniel scatta un’attrazione così forte che potrebbe offuscare la mente di entrambi. Daniel ha lasciato quel mondo anni prima, quando era poco più che diciottenne e la sua famiglia non lo ha mai perdonato, ritornare a far parte di quella realtà potrebbe affascinarlo così tanto da mettere in pericolo le indagini. Ma Daniel è uomo che ha visto la differenza tra la realtà in cui e cresciuto e la vita esterna e anche se prova qualche rimpianto questo è legato più agli affetti familiari che al modo di vivere della comunità e sarà una spalla più che solida a cui Serenity potrà appoggiarsi nella ricerca di una verità che si scontrerà con segreti e bugie.
Non c’è che dire, questa autrice sa il fatto suo, visto che mi ha tenuta incollata alle pagine del libro senza darmi l’opportunità di respirare tra una scoperta e l’altra. Ha dato vita non solo a due personaggi ben delineati ma anche ad un romanzo costruito sia su due piani temporali che a più voci, ovvero a quelle dei due protagonisti che ci raccontano la vicenda dal loro punto di vista. Quindi, mentre il passato ci fa vivere gli ultimi mesi della vita della vittima, il presente ci mostra l’avanzare delle indagini e lo sviluppo dell’attrazione tra Daniel e Serenity. Viviamo, quindi, attraverso le loro parole quelli che sono i loro pensieri, le loro paure e i loro desideri. Scopriamo in questo modo una Serenity forte, caparbia, tenace ma anche fragile, a tratti insicura della sua femminilità. Il più delle volte respinge Daniel proprio perché pensa di non poter attrarre un uomo bello come lui. Dal canto suo Daniel è un uomo che si è fatto da solo, che per amore ha lasciato gli amish quando era ancora molto giovane, che ha lottato per costruirsi una vita serena ma che ora sente la mancanza di una persona con cui condividerla e Serenity sembra proprio la donna giusta, peccato che lei faccia fatica ad accorgersene. E da uomo forte e protettivo, lotterà per avere un posto in quel cuore restio all’amore.
Vittima sacrificale è un libro che va letto e assaporato in tutte le sue sfumature perché, oltre ad essere un thriller di tutto rispetto, è anche un romanzo in cui c’è l’inizio di una bella storia d’amore e, per finire, anche un alone di mistero che avvolge tutta la vicenda, gran parte del quale dovuto all’ambientazione all’interno di una comunità che vive quasi fuori dal mondo, con tradizioni e usi che ricordano più i secoli scorsi che il nuovo millennio. So che vi appassionerete anche voi alle vicende di Serenity e Daniel e che avrete voglia di scoprire altro su di loro e sugli amish, ma non temete, avremo modo di scoprire di più su tutti loro, perché una nuova indagine li aspetta dietro l’angolo e, spero che la CE non ci farà aspettare a lungo, prima di regalarci una nuova avventura.

Salve, cari amici readers. Oggi vi parlo di “Vittima Sacrificale”, romanzo autoconclusivo e primo della serie “I segreti di Serenity’s Plain”, un altro thriller targato Hope Edizioni che ho avuto il piacere di leggere. La sinossi e il titolo mi avevano colpito subito (i thriller sono la mia passione e basta poco per scatenare in me la curiosità) e sono lieta di rivelarvi che è stata una lettura niente affatto spiacevole. Da tempo mi sono resa conto che se gli amanti del genere sono in cerca di una buona lettura, con i thriller della Hope non resteranno scontenti. E se siete alle prime armi, vi consiglio di iniziare con questo romanzo l’introduzione al genere. Bando alle ciance, andiamo a conoscere la trama.
Protagonista è lo sceriffo Serenity Adams, che ha lasciato il suo posto di lavoro a Indianapolis per tornare nella sua terra natale, Blood Rock, convinta che laggiù non avrebbe avuto a che fare con casi violenti o morti agghiaccianti. Eppure eccola qui, alle prese con un caso di morte sospetta tra le mani.
“Ero stata da poco eletta sceriffo e dovevo già occuparmi di una giovane ragazza morta, in circostanze misteriose, nella mia giurisdizione. Come se non fosse già abbastanza dovevo anche affrontare uno scontro tra culture.”
La vittima è una giovane ragazza amish, Naomi, freddata con un colpo d’arma da fuoco allo stomaco in un campo di grano. Se conoscete i costumi e le tradizioni della comunità amish, sicuramente saprete che alle donne non è permesso fare alcun lavoro, se non le mogli, le madri e le casalinghe, e non è permesso uscire quando si fa buio. Quindi è da scartare l’ipotesi che Naomi si trovasse in quel luogo per lavoro o per una passeggiata al chiaro di luna.
Una domanda, quindi, sorge spontanea e martella in testa allo sceriffo: che diamine ci faceva una ragazza amish al confine di un campo di grano sperduto?
Un incidente!
È questo quello che è successo. Un cacciatore appostato lì, scambiandola per una preda, le ha sparato e quando si è reso conto di aver commesso un omicidio, se l'è data a gambe in fretta e furia. È questo ciò che tutti sono certi che sia successo. Il caso è già pronto per essere archiviato, ma Serenity non ci crede. Lei è più che certa che si sia trattato di un omicidio volontario. Il difficile sarà trovare le prove che diano ragione alla sua teoria e come prima mossa lo sceriffo decide di interrogare la comunità amish. Ma sarà tempo perso…
Ciò che Serenity riceve da quella gente è tutto, tranne che risposte: astio, freddezza, disprezzo e anche rabbia. Ma non chiarezza. Non si respira nessuna emozione nell’aria ed è inquietante, considerato che una ragazza giovanissima è stata brutalmente strappata via dalla propria comunità. Nessuno dà l’idea di essere sconvolto. Nemmeno la famiglia di Naomi.
“Guardai attentamente i tre amish piegarsi sul corpo solo per un istante. Dopo aver abbassato la testa simultaneamente e chiuso gli occhi per una preghiera silenziosa, alzarono lo sguardo verso di me senza far trasparire alcuna emozione. Le loro iridi impassibili mi fecero fermare il cuore.”
In quella comunità amish accadono più stranezze di quante la gente è disposta a rivelare. Ma con lei, una forestiera americana, nessun amish si aprirà mai. Le serve qualcuno che la faccia entrare in quel mondo, in modo da sbloccare il caso o per lo meno dargli una svolta.
Quel qualcuno risulta essere Daniel, un noto sciupafemmine che ha abbandonato la comunità amish da ragazzo e che Serenity conosce da poco. Tra i due scatta subito una profonda e intensa attrazione che vedrete sbocciare man mano che il romanzo si dirama e che il caso viene lavorato.
Con Daniel al suo fianco, entrare in quel mondo a parte risulterà estremamente più facile, ma decisamente più pericoloso.
Mentre Serenity indaga sempre più a fondo sul caso di Naomi, si renderà conto che il mondo degli amish non è così pacifico come potrebbe sembrare e i segreti non sono altro che la normalità. Ma proprio quei segreti, che gli amish intendono far rimanere tali, comportano un bel carico di rischi, pericoli e minacce, che incombono non solo sulla sua relazione con Daniel, ma anche sulla sua stessa vita.
Ma Serenity non si fermerà. È più che determinata a rendere giustizia a quella povera ragazza assassinata e a seguire il suo istinto da sceriffo che la sprona ad andare sempre più avanti, sempre più a fondo, alla ricerca della verità.
Ma qual è la verità? Incidente oppure omicidio?
“Forse quella graziosa ragazza era stata uccisa in un incidente di caccia. Ma se non era quella la dinamica dell’omicidio, ero determinata a portare alla luce la verità.
E, dannazione, non avrei trattato in modo diverso gli amish da qualsiasi altro cittadino.”
Ci sono troppe domande che girano in testa per lasciarle andare facilmente…
Chi ha ucciso Naomi e perché?
Che cosa si nasconde dietro l’atteggiamento freddo e impassibile della comunità amish?
Quali segreti cela la loro cultura all’apparenza pacifica?
In che cosa si sta addentrando lo sceriffo Serenity Adams e dove la porterà la sua relazione con Daniel Bachmann?
Ammetto che un campo di grano, di norma semplice e innocuo, non mi era mai parso così terribilmente inquietante come in questa storia.
La Hopkins ci dona molta ansia in queste pagine, mista a inquietudine, adrenalina e voglia disperata di conoscere la verità. Potreste avere l’impressione che tutto sembri chiaro sin da subito, ma non lasciatevi ingannare. L’autrice ha giocato tutte le sue carte con intelligenza, astuzia e maestria, delineando una trama ipnotica che, come un incantatore di serpenti, attrae, seduce e intrappola il lettore in queste pagine. E infine: l’asso nella manica, l’epilogo. La verità, il finale che non ti aspetti, per quanto chiaro fosse, che ti porta a ridere amaramente e rimanere stupefatta. Non conosco l’autrice, ma senza dubbio il suo punto forte è quello di depistare il lettore, portandolo a credere cose che non esistono, per poi sbalordirlo nel finale.
Dannazione: anche il titolo è un maledetto ingannatore. A che cosa vi fa pensare “Vittima Sacrificale”? Beh, lo scenario è totalmente differente da quello che sembra.
La narrazione alternata avviene in prima persona nei pov di Serenity, dove la vedrete alle prese con la risoluzione del caso e con la sua relazione con Daniel, e in terza persona nei pov di (rullo di tamburi) Naomi Belier, la vittima del nostro romanzo. In questi pov, oltre a sapere per filo e per segno che cosa è accaduto la sera in cui la ragazza ha perso la vita, farete la conoscenza di tutta la sua vita a 360 gradi, sia all’interno della comunità che nel mondo esterno. Ne scoprirete di cose interessanti, oh, se ne scoprirete! I suoi pov sono talmente coinvolgenti che appena letto il primo ne vorrete ancora e ancora. Sarete presi tra due fuochi perché una parte di voi sarà desiderosa di sapere come procede il caso e quali scheletri vengono fuori dagli armadi degli amish (e vi assicuro che ce ne sono parecchi), nonché la relazione complessa e turbolenta tra Daniel e Serenity. E un’altra parte vorrà leggere ancora della vita di Naomi, conoscere a fondo i segreti, i desideri più reconditi e i pensieri di questa giovane ragazza intrappolata in una vita che le stava troppo stretta.
I capitoli si susseguono scorrevolmente e dettagliatamente, senza mai diventare pesanti, noiosi o ripetitivi e presentano al lettore delle personalità ben definite.
Serenity è una donna determinata, testarda e caparbia e proprio questi suoi aspetti faranno sì che si spinga oltre i limiti pur di rendere giustizia a Naomi. Con la sua tenacia poi è in grado di tenere testa a un'intera comunità che non si farà alcuno scrupolo nel far intendere allo sceriffo di non ficcare il naso nelle loro questioni.
Daniel è un personaggio molto più che interessante. Sarà la chiave per la risoluzione di quel caso e affiancherà Serenity dall’inizio alla fine. Ho apprezzato molto il suo profilo psicologico inizialmente scettico, ma via via sempre più preso da quelle indagini che gli daranno un’opportunità di conquista e un avvicinamento a quella famiglia che aveva scelto di abbandonare. Daniel tornerà ad aver a che fare con la comunità e lo vedrete in continua lotta con se stesso: rispetta il credo degli amish e un po’ ne sente la mancanza, ma quando poi si verificano determinati episodi, non può far altro che rallegrarsi della scelta che ha fatto ed essere grato per la libertà che possiede.
“Dannazione, il vero problema qui era rivangare di nuovo tutti i voltafaccia, le coltellate alla schiena e le tensioni del periodo con gli amish. Valeva la pena farlo per una donna?”
Quindi, come vi ho già anticipato, vedrete sbocciare passo passo il loro rapporto, ma il centro della storia rimane sempre e comunque il caso di Naomi.
Che cos’altro posso dire? Questa serie non la mollo, sono fermamente convinta di leggere tutti i libri di cui sarà composta. Il duo Serenity/Daniel mi ha intrigata troppo.
Vi do appuntamento al secondo romanzo della serie e quindi al secondo caso dello sceriffo Serenity Adams, cari readers, sempre ambientato nel contento “amish” a quanto pare.

In quella comunità amish accadono più stranezze di quante la gente è disposta a rivelare. Ma con lei, una forestiera americana, nessun amish si aprirà mai. Le serve qualcuno che la faccia entrare in quel mondo, in modo da sbloccare il caso o per lo meno dargli una svolta.
Quel qualcuno risulta essere Daniel, un noto sciupafemmine che ha abbandonato la comunità amish da ragazzo e che Serenity conosce da poco. Tra i due scatta subito una profonda e intensa attrazione che vedrete sbocciare man mano che il romanzo si dirama e che il caso viene lavorato.
Con Daniel al suo fianco, entrare in quel mondo a parte risulterà estremamente più facile, ma decisamente più pericoloso.
Mentre Serenity indaga sempre più a fondo sul caso di Naomi, si renderà conto che il mondo degli amish non è così pacifico come potrebbe sembrare e i segreti non sono altro che la normalità. Ma proprio quei segreti, che gli amish intendono far rimanere tali, comportano un bel carico di rischi, pericoli e minacce, che incombono non solo sulla sua relazione con Daniel, ma anche sulla sua stessa vita.
Ma Serenity non si fermerà. È più che determinata a rendere giustizia a quella povera ragazza assassinata e a seguire il suo istinto da sceriffo che la sprona ad andare sempre più avanti, sempre più a fondo, alla ricerca della verità.
Ma qual è la verità? Incidente oppure omicidio?

Che cosa si nasconde dietro l’atteggiamento freddo e impassibile della comunità amish?
Quali segreti cela la loro cultura all’apparenza pacifica?
In che cosa si sta addentrando lo sceriffo Serenity Adams e dove la porterà la sua relazione con Daniel Bachmann?
Ammetto che un campo di grano, di norma semplice e innocuo, non mi era mai parso così terribilmente inquietante come in questa storia.
La Hopkins ci dona molta ansia in queste pagine, mista a inquietudine, adrenalina e voglia disperata di conoscere la verità. Potreste avere l’impressione che tutto sembri chiaro sin da subito, ma non lasciatevi ingannare. L’autrice ha giocato tutte le sue carte con intelligenza, astuzia e maestria, delineando una trama ipnotica che, come un incantatore di serpenti, attrae, seduce e intrappola il lettore in queste pagine. E infine: l’asso nella manica, l’epilogo. La verità, il finale che non ti aspetti, per quanto chiaro fosse, che ti porta a ridere amaramente e rimanere stupefatta. Non conosco l’autrice, ma senza dubbio il suo punto forte è quello di depistare il lettore, portandolo a credere cose che non esistono, per poi sbalordirlo nel finale.
Dannazione: anche il titolo è un maledetto ingannatore. A che cosa vi fa pensare “Vittima Sacrificale”? Beh, lo scenario è totalmente differente da quello che sembra.
La narrazione alternata avviene in prima persona nei pov di Serenity, dove la vedrete alle prese con la risoluzione del caso e con la sua relazione con Daniel, e in terza persona nei pov di (rullo di tamburi) Naomi Belier, la vittima del nostro romanzo. In questi pov, oltre a sapere per filo e per segno che cosa è accaduto la sera in cui la ragazza ha perso la vita, farete la conoscenza di tutta la sua vita a 360 gradi, sia all’interno della comunità che nel mondo esterno. Ne scoprirete di cose interessanti, oh, se ne scoprirete! I suoi pov sono talmente coinvolgenti che appena letto il primo ne vorrete ancora e ancora. Sarete presi tra due fuochi perché una parte di voi sarà desiderosa di sapere come procede il caso e quali scheletri vengono fuori dagli armadi degli amish (e vi assicuro che ce ne sono parecchi), nonché la relazione complessa e turbolenta tra Daniel e Serenity. E un’altra parte vorrà leggere ancora della vita di Naomi, conoscere a fondo i segreti, i desideri più reconditi e i pensieri di questa giovane ragazza intrappolata in una vita che le stava troppo stretta.
I capitoli si susseguono scorrevolmente e dettagliatamente, senza mai diventare pesanti, noiosi o ripetitivi e presentano al lettore delle personalità ben definite.
Serenity è una donna determinata, testarda e caparbia e proprio questi suoi aspetti faranno sì che si spinga oltre i limiti pur di rendere giustizia a Naomi. Con la sua tenacia poi è in grado di tenere testa a un'intera comunità che non si farà alcuno scrupolo nel far intendere allo sceriffo di non ficcare il naso nelle loro questioni.
Daniel è un personaggio molto più che interessante. Sarà la chiave per la risoluzione di quel caso e affiancherà Serenity dall’inizio alla fine. Ho apprezzato molto il suo profilo psicologico inizialmente scettico, ma via via sempre più preso da quelle indagini che gli daranno un’opportunità di conquista e un avvicinamento a quella famiglia che aveva scelto di abbandonare. Daniel tornerà ad aver a che fare con la comunità e lo vedrete in continua lotta con se stesso: rispetta il credo degli amish e un po’ ne sente la mancanza, ma quando poi si verificano determinati episodi, non può far altro che rallegrarsi della scelta che ha fatto ed essere grato per la libertà che possiede.
“Dannazione, il vero problema qui era rivangare di nuovo tutti i voltafaccia, le coltellate alla schiena e le tensioni del periodo con gli amish. Valeva la pena farlo per una donna?”
Quindi, come vi ho già anticipato, vedrete sbocciare passo passo il loro rapporto, ma il centro della storia rimane sempre e comunque il caso di Naomi.
Che cos’altro posso dire? Questa serie non la mollo, sono fermamente convinta di leggere tutti i libri di cui sarà composta. Il duo Serenity/Daniel mi ha intrigata troppo.
Vi do appuntamento al secondo romanzo della serie e quindi al secondo caso dello sceriffo Serenity Adams, cari readers, sempre ambientato nel contento “amish” a quanto pare.
Se cercate un thriller fresco, originale e in grado di sorprendervi, con dei personaggi forti e determinati e quel pizzico di romance che regala più intrigo alla trama, vi consiglio “Vittima Sacrificale”.

I fell in love with Karen Ann Hopkin's Temptation series and I was so excited when I saw this book was also written by her. Romance is usually my favorite genre to read but sometimes I like a good murder mystery and this one did not disappoint. I love the way she writes and her books are seriously addicting.
There were so many twists and turns. I'd like to think I'm good at figuring out who the bad guy is but I just could not figure it out! The author had me guessing the entire time. You think you know what's going on then BAM, you're thrown another curve ball. I was shocked at the end. I never saw it coming.
Serenity is the new sheriff in town and wants to prove herself. She was one of my favorite heroines. She was smart, strong, and determined. She knew something wasn't right about the murder and the Amish community, and she won't stop until she finds out the truth. She gets no help from the Amish community so she goes to a man named Daniel Bachman who used to be Amish and lived there for help.
Daniel and Serenity had hot chemistry and they made a good team. I loved them together and I completely loved Daniel! He was strong and sexy and YUM! I liked their working relationship and I liked the suspense in seeing if they were going to fall for each other while trying to solve the case.
I loved that the author did 3 points of view, one of them being Naomi's. We get to hear her story and the events leading to her death. I cried for her so many times and the situation that she was in. It was sad what happened to her and that she died so young. I liked that Serenity and Daniel would not give up until they figured out what happened. Naomi deserved that.
If you like a stay up all night read, a book that keeps you guessing the entire time, suspense, mystery, murder, and some romance (past and present), this is the book for you!

I received a ARC of this one from the Author via Kismet Book Tours in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
The cover shows a pretty bleak sky over a large cornfield, which is an important place within the book as that is where Naomi Beiler's body is found. I love the Amish buggy on the cover too as well as the plainer, perhaps Amish like font.
So now to the actual plot, Serenity is the new Sheriff of the small rural town she grew up in, though the old Sheriff Tony Manning still seem's to think he is ruling the roost!
There is a large Amish community which also comes under Sheriff Serenity's jurisdiction so when an Amish girl is found dead in a corn field, she has to investigate. She learn's that the Amish prefer to "take care of their own" and Tony Manning takes great delight in goading her that she will never find out how the Amish girl was shot. After taking with her Deputy and the coroner about how to approach the Amish she visits Daniel Bachman, a man who was brought up the Amish way but left to "go English". Daniel agrees to help Serenity but only if she does things "his way" which means them pretending to be in a relationship and using the pretense that Daniel may he considering going back to being Amish. So alongside of the girls death plot we also have a fledgling romance too. I really enjoyed how the two plot lines ran along side each other. Finding out what happened to Naomi becomes even more personal when she finds out someone close to her is kind of involved (but I refuse to say who as that would be a large spoiler!).
The story is told from three points of view, you have Serenity in the "now" after the body has been found. Then there is what happened leading up to the death told by Naomi's point of view. Also towards the end of the book we have some of the story told my Daniel Bachman and his point of view.
I really enjoyed the mystery, suspense and drama in this book as well as it indulging me a little more in my fascination with the Amish culture. Karen Ann Hopkin's writes so well and the just flows brilliantly, I really enjoyed it. So much so as I was reaching the end I didn't want it to be over. I really hope that this book is just the beginning of a series. We can see Serenity and Daniels relationship develop as well as seeing Serenity solve other cases. There is a hint towards that at the end of this book.
So did I enjoy the book? Definitely Yes! Would I recommend the book? Again, definitely yes! Would you read another book in this series if there is one? I certainly would and I do hope we are going to have more of Serenity, Daniel, Todd, Bobby and the Amish. Would you read other titles by Karen Ann Hopkins? I would certainly take a close look at anything written by this author, I love her writing style and plots.

I could not even wait for this release when I seen it pop up on Goodreads so when I seen that Kismet was hosting a book tour, I immediately jumped at the chance to participate. After reading Karen Ann Hopkins’ Temptation series I was completely hooked on her writing and stories so I was itching to dive into this as soon as I received it.
Lamb to the Slaughter is told in three alternating points of view: Serenity, Daniel and Naomi. Serenity is the town sheriff and this is her first encounter with the Amish community, Daniel was born Amish but left when he was a teenager and Naomi is the young girl who was killed. I think telling the story in these separate points of view really gave it that added wow factor. I loved reading all three points of view, but the one that really hit me hard was Naomi’s. You know immediately that she is the young girl that dies, so that’s not a spoiler, but hearing her story in her words up to her death is just so sad. She really didn’t get a fair chance at life, and her POV really impacted me.
The characters are just so easy to love. I find this is a common element in Hopkin’s writing, she writes wonderful, wonderful characters. Serenity was strong and determined and really what you could except from a sheriff of a small town. Daniel was sexy and I loved his role in the mystery. Serenity really utilized his knowledge of the Amish culture and I loved the budding romance throughout the story.
The mystery itself was really attention grabbing. I found it nearly impossible to put this book down! I honestly had NO idea what was going on, or what happened to Naomi, that in itself being a surprise because I can always guess the endings. I really had no idea what was going on, because you are led astray so many times by the Amish community, and I was thoroughly shocked by who the killer was found out to be! I had a totally different suspicion in my mind…
One thing that is clear, is that Karen Ann Hopkins, really puts a lot of thought and research into creating her worlds. It’s obvious that she is very familiar with the Amish culture and does a wonderful job depicting that. I find their traditions and customs fascinating and even while reading fiction, I’m learning about the Amish people as well.
I would highly, highly recommend this one. I cannot find a single thing I disliked. From the mystery, the characters, and the writing this is a fantastic book! I was so excited to find out this is the beginning of a series. I loved the way the story ended and I’m glad that there is room for certain plot points to develop into the next book. I cannot wait for book two!

LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER was a really good book that had me eagerly reading to seek out the killer of the young Amish girl. I pretty much had the murderer pegged a couple chapters in but it was still interesting to see all the information the Sheriff and Daniel dug up in the meantime. I always enjoy playing detective with a good murder mystery.
Now I will honestly say I did not like the Sheriff. How Serenity has been elected Sheriff is beyond me. There were times I wondered about her. At the end of the story she asks one of her deputies to "make the call" at a trivial time in the investigation. Um, honey you are the Sheriff…you make the calls.
Daniel on the other hand I did like. He once belonged to the Amish community until he left it when he was 19 years old. He has a history with them but a future with the English people. He seemed to have it together more than the Sheriff when it came to the romance between the two. What little there was. I was hoping for more, but in the end, the mystery part was what pulled me in. And I was ok with that. Romance could be shelved for at least one book. I had a mystery to solve.
I really enjoyed Naomi’s POV that happened every other chapter. We got to go back before the murder and see what evolved between her and certain characters and what led up to the night she was taken from this world. Slowly but surely secrets are revealed and we find out what exactly happened to her. But I can truly say I liked her and her scenes. Even though we know what her outcome is, you still hold out the slightest bit of hope for her and that she gets away with the one she loves. Sadly it never happens.
Amish stories have always interested me. I want to say it would be easy to fall into that lifestyle and give up the frivolous things of this world. But after reading this one, I just don't think it would be quite that easy. They are a very secretive people and watch out for their own. It really would be a lot harder than it looks.

Then came Karen Ann Hopkins, with her beautiful and engaging Temptation series, that kept me reading all night. Her sincere personality and love for her fans and book followers is shown through her Facebook and Twitter posts. She allows her readers to enter her life; horseback riding, raising animals, and the world of Amish living. Readers wait patiently for the next book to be published, we are showered with pictures that remind us of why she loves the Amish so much. It’s the simple life that keeps me fascinated even more in this ever growing genre of Amish fiction. I think I have made it perfectly clear over the years that mysteries are not my favorite genre to read, however on occasion I will throw one into the TBR pile and see where it takes me. So when Karen told me that an adult mystery was coming out, I cringed and then thought everything that Karen has written has been amazing this will be no different, and was I right!
Simply put Karen Ann Hopkins, takes her readers to a new level of Amish fiction and suspense. The main character Serenity is the nucleus of the story. Through my lens everything is centered around her. A new sheriff , determined to follow processes and procedures. However, faced with the death of a young Amish girl, wrapping up a case of accidental death, proves to be not so easy. Sure there is help along the way. Even a little bit of romance sprinkled throughout. But what really makes this mystery stand out, is even when you think you know the answer, Karen has crafted a twist thrown at you that makes that theory disappear and a new one come to light. Her shift from Young Adult Literature to Adult is amazing. My 5 tree reviews are never given without a lot of thought. No questions asked, 5 it is. The writing style is on point with what the components of a good mystery should be. Readers are engaged from the very first chapter until the very end. That by far is an example of awesome writing. I’ll pick up her next mystery any day!
Simply put Karen Ann Hopkins, takes her readers to a new level of Amish fiction and suspense. The main character Serenity is the nucleus of the story. Through my lens everything is centered around her. A new sheriff , determined to follow processes and procedures. However, faced with the death of a young Amish girl, wrapping up a case of accidental death, proves to be not so easy. Sure there is help along the way. Even a little bit of romance sprinkled throughout. But what really makes this mystery stand out, is even when you think you know the answer, Karen has crafted a twist thrown at you that makes that theory disappear and a new one come to light. Her shift from Young Adult Literature to Adult is amazing. My 5 tree reviews are never given without a lot of thought. No questions asked, 5 it is. The writing style is on point with what the components of a good mystery should be. Readers are engaged from the very first chapter until the very end. That by far is an example of awesome writing. I’ll pick up her next mystery any day!

Murder, secrets and a Sheriff determined to prove herself makes Lamb to the Slaughter a must read for any mystery fan. The key to any mystery novel is to keep the reader guessing until very end, especially in a whodunit type of mystery. Karen Ann Hopkins has delivered this element perfectly, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the different twists and turns throughout the novel. I also have to say that I also enjoyed the romantic elements of the story. Seriously, one of the best murder mystery novels I have read in a long time.
Serenity Adams is a tough by the book cop who is trying to prove herself to Blood Rock, when Naomi a young Amish girl is found shot in a cornfield. While it looks like an open and shut case of accidental shooting, something just feels off for Sheriff Adams, and she know the Amish community is hiding something. Her tenacity to go after the truth even when everyone else is telling her to close the case and move on it the reason I love her as a character so much.
The story is told in two parts as the mystery unfolds, one from Serenity and Daniel as they try to find out the truth behind Naomi’s death, and one from Naomi herself in the events leading up to her death. This before and after point of view switching really opens the readers eyes, but still manages to leave the truth hidden until the very end. Also watching Naomi’s life unfold before the tragedy of her death made me want to know what happened more than anything else.
Karen Ann Hopkins has delivered with Lamb to the Slaughter, and I am hoping for a lot more Serenity Adams mysteries in the future. I love the uniqueness Karen Ann Hopkins brings to the mystery genre, and I will DEFIANTLY be reading more from her in the future.
