Silver Blood: A Gilded Blood Prequel

"I could smell her attraction for me, so potent I could almost taste it; somehow, I knew that if I ever let myself steal a sip of her nectar, I would never be able to satisfy my appetite with anything – or anyone – else ever again."
*

I am the bastard prince of the summer court, the lone survivor of my mother’s slaughtered bloodline. Enslaved by her killer, I spend half my days as his emissary in the savage wilds of the Fae Realm, and the other half toiling away in a tattoo studio in the heart of Miami.

Because my curse forbids me from killing my family’s murderer – or myself – I have thusly persisted; a broken, half-elf, half-incubus abomination with the boot of a beast on my back and the thirst of a beast lurking within.

But when a needle-phobic art school dropout appears at my door begging for a job, her eyes glistening with golden tears, my entire existence is turned upside down. For in this strange and beautiful creature, I have found two things: a reason for living, and a path to salvation.

“This woman is going to be the death of me. If only I had known just how true those words were about to become.”
They are in for quite the battle to be sure the next four book are amazing! I recommend starting with them as the prequel has spoilers and is best if read in release order.

This book like all of Rachel’s books came with twists, adventure, and WTF moments. Add in the bonus of a lot of spice and I easily call this her best book ever! Yeah the smut wins we every time, I don’t apologize! Lmao!!

Hold on tight as Rachel prepares to feed you another adventure with the book boyfriend of the millennium, in this world or another, Zayn! He embarks on quests while trying to navigate his feelings for Talia. Talia meanwhile sticks around despite him pushing her away, she is stronger than I originally thought in the beginning of inked. I thoroughly enjoyed a look at her from this vantage point. Zayn’s view was icing on the cake!

What do you do when the love of your life is hot and cold with you, then disappears and you find magic exists? ….apparently you jump into a magical file cabinet and go looking for him.

I'm not usually a huge fan of prequels because they never live up to the main story I've already read. However this one, I absolutely love! I loved getting inside Zayn's head and seeing his and Talia's meet from his POV all the way to the point where Inked starts in Talia's pov. From the moment she entered his tattoo studio, we get it all. Including the adventures he goes on to get the ingredients he needs for his runes and other things. And of course the mouth on him with the thoughts he has about Talia. It's interesting after reading the gilded blood series to see what he thinks and to witness the adventures he goes on. As well as witnessing the depression and shackled feelings he has from Sol. It definitely can and probably should be read first before reading inked the first book in the gilded blood series. However even if you have finished the series I highly recommend reading this story, there is so much backstory you get that I personally love. I absolutely love getting inside Zayn's head and seeing how he feels about Talia, Sol, Simon, and himself thinking he's a monster who cant have Talia. A 1 out of 5 spice rating for me personally however it is more spice than some of the other books in the series.

I absolutely loved Silver Blood! As the prequel to the Guilded Blood series, I absolutely loved reading how Zayn and Talia’s relationship started and evolved, and especially that it’s written in Zayn’s POV. Biscuit continues to be the scene stealer we all know and love! Thank you, Rachel, for yet another amazing story!

This is such a great addition to the Gilded Blood series. All I want to do now is crack open my big pink omnibus and read the rest of it.

Also, every mention of Talia and her mother yelling made me giggle. I'd love to see Zayn's reaction to that particular related revelation later on.

I loved this book! It's the prequel we desperately needed. Being back in this world was amazing. The writing is incredible and it's so easy to feel like you are there witnessing the events as they happen. I felt so much while reading this. I adore books that make me REALLY feel and this book did not disappoint. I loved seeing more from Zayn's POV. I really desire to see more in this world in the future. I REALLY hope we get a beautiful special edition to go on my shelf next to my Gilded Blood omnibus. I highly recommend this book (and the Gilded Blood series).

Woah. Silver Blood was the story I didn’t know I needed in 2025, and it absolutely delivered. Experiencing Zayn’s POV—two years before Talia’s journey in The Gilded Blood series—was nothing short of mesmerizing. Not only did we get that scene (IYKYK 😉), but this book was so much more than just a prequel. It was raw emotion, inner turmoil, and an unrelenting battle against fate itself. The tension, the forbidden love, the heart-wrenching helplessness of keeping Talia alive—it all unfolded with breathtaking intensity.

And then there’s Hibiscus. Calling her a side character feels almost disrespectful because, let’s be real, that pesky, gorgeous, scene-stealing parrot has always been a star. She captured our hearts in The Gilded Blood series, and in Silver Blood, she soared even higher.

This book delivered darkness, depth, and emotional resonance, offering a profound new perspective on the past while adding an undeniable magic to an already extraordinary series. People often say prequels don’t live up to their main series—Silver Blood shatters that notion. It not only holds up but surpasses expectations with flying colors. In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the best in the series, not just because of the spice (though, let’s be honest, it brought the spice) but because of the undeniable emotional connections I felt with these characters.

Rachel Rener has outdone herself. Silver Blood isn’t just a prequel—it’s a triumph.

Scoville Spice Scale: 🌶🌶 🐓

"I was a predator and a parasite, and I denounced any Creator who allowed monsters like me to prey on beautiful creatures like her."

Silver Blo0d, the highly anticipated prequel to #thegoldblo0dseriess that started with the book Inked, where we, the readers, met Talia, tells the story of Zayn, her smoking hot boss. We get his point of view and what point of view it is! Zayn, when we meet him, already loathes his existence. He would happily kill himself to end his servitude to Sol, the Incubus Mobster, who owns him through a Rune that controls him even when Sol is nowhere to be found. If he even thinks about harming himself, Sol, or one of his overweening offspring, the Rune flares and causes Zayn agonizing pain. His life had very little purpose until one day Talia walked into Zayn's Tattoo Studio and life, and his world was turned inside out. Watching Zayn struggle with himself and "the beast" as he calls his baser nature and how much he shames himself for his past made it hard to read his story. His self-hatred, knowing how far he is going to go, made me want to shout at him. But, knowing where he ends up and watching him get there is half the fun. And would he or wouldn't he have made the same decisions if it wasn't for everyone's favorite Jungle Chicken 🦜 Biscuit who deserves all the almonds for his role in getting Talia through the interdimensional filing cabinet.

Now I'm wondering what order people are going to suggest reading the books?

A) Start with TGBS & the Silver Blo0d?
B) Read Inked, Silver Blo0d and then the rest of TGBS?
C) Start with Silver Blo0d series and then TGBS.

We all know I am one of Rachel Rener’s biggest fans. She announces a new book and I buy it, typically in multiple formats (hello shiny pretty signed books).

So when I was offered an ARC of her soon-to-be-released book Silver Blood, I was honored and excited and ready to dive back into the world I got to know from the Gilded Blood series.

This book follows Zayn, and tells the story from the day Talia shows up at his tattoo shop, intertwining some things that we knew from the GB series but with more detail. We get more insight into Zayn and his protective streak, as well as the impossible decisions he must make.

And we get more of Hibiscus/Biskiss, the loveable almond-obsessed matchmaking tattoo familiar. Seriously, I can’t get enough of this Jungle Chicken and would love a whole slew of short stories dedicated to Hibiscus’ misadventures.

Since the first half of the story overlaps A LOT with the Gilded Blood books, and since I just finished re-reading those for the 3rd or 4th or 5th time, I had a harder time focusing on reading this. But once Zayn stepped back into the Fae Realm, things picked up and I flew through the rest of the book. Even though I KNOW what happens next, I want to know what happens next! I want to reread this and then the GB books and follow their love story in order.

I really loved seeing the beginning of the Gilded BI00d saga from Zayn's POV. Our favorite sad boi incubus had it so bad for Talia from the second she walked into the tattoo shop. 🥹 And Hibiscus/Biskiss/Biscuit was a delight. A wonderful addition to a fantastic series!

Freaking fantastic!! Zayn has been one of my favorite book boyfriends since I read Inked and let me tell you… He still is. If not even more so now!

True love that gets tested time and time again. Spice that made me blush, silly bird antics that made me giggle, and crazy moms you can hear over the phone from 20 feet away! Let’s not forget the writing and how she is able to project colors that don’t even exist is truly amazing to me and I love being able to read in such vivid colors!

This book pulled my heart strings something fierce! I can’t wait to put it on my shelf next to my beautiful Inked omnibus!

Before I get into the book, let me tell you about the extras. SO many extras! First, there are gorgeous graphics throughout the book. There's a map at the beginning so you can (literally) get the lay of the land in the Fae Realm. Each chapter has a graphic, either a rune or a symbol that depicts some of what's going on in the chapter. At the end of the book there are many helpful appendices: Common Blood Types & Magical Classes, Runemastery for Dummies, and an Elvish Dictionary. You can flip to them if you'd like more information while reading or dive in after the book's conclusion because you just need more of this world and are not ready to stop, which is the method I chose.

Now about the book itself. It's funny, heartbreaking, has lots of action, characters you love, characters you love to hate, and Hibiscus, Zayn's stubborn familiar that has lots of spunk and ideas of her own. She's a beautiful bird that is "home" as a tattoo on Zayn's arm but can exist in the real world, causing Zayn lots of anxiety but has his best interests at heart.

If you've read the Gilded Blood series, you'll know the basics of what's happening in this prequel. It's told from Zayn's point of view instead of Talia's, so you'll know what he's thinking the whole time and what he's doing when Talia's not around. I really enjoyed this and appreciate Zayn all the more.

If you haven't read the Gilded Blood series, don't fret - you don't need to have read it first. Silver Blood does have breadcrumbs of things that are revealed in the series proper, but you're not missing anything. I enjoyed the breadcrumbs greatly, and you will, too, once you read this book again after you've read Gilded Blood.

Because, like me, you're going to want to dive into Inked (the first Gilded Blood book) immediately, even though you have lots of other books in your TBR.

Rachel Rener is a writing goddess! She took a story already told, and added so much insight to Zayn, that I felt like I was reading a whole new story despite knowing the ending. In fact, it evoked so many feelings, I kept having to stop because I was so agitated. I just wanted to wrap him up in a floofy blanky and whisper that it all works out in the end, over and over. Zayn was always a good guy. You knew that from the Gilded Blood series, but the complete torture he suffered in the years leading up to the events of GB adds so many layers. And Biscuit! The true hero of the tale! That bird is truly the soul that binds them together.
Sizzling, emotional, tense and tragic, this book is everything you didn't know you needed for this series.

Rachel Rener set a very high bar with the first four books of the Gilded Blood series and Silver Blood clears it with ease and style. Zayn’s perspective of the events leading up to the other books in the series not only gives us more detail on the magical world that is the backdrop of much of the series but also lets us see Talia through his eyes. This book lets readers see just how much he struggled with his feelings throughout the story and why.
This review will be light on specific story elements to avoid spoilers for the series. That said, while this series is an adventure worthy of the best Isekai out there, in my opinion it at its heart is a love story. Silver Blood adds layers to that story that makes the whole series sweeter and hotter (THAT SCENE fans self). Zayn’s struggles with who and what he is give us a better understanding of why he made the decisions that caused himself so much pain and drove Talia quite so crazy in the first four books.
One of the things I know I’m going to get with this author’s books is some of the best world building I’ve read. Her depth of research, and the originality of her magic systems always blow me away. Silver Blood strengthens and fleshes out an already existing system she put so much effort into and I am here for it. The mix of real world myth and folklore, a dash of science (Rh- blood), and some of my favorite fantasy tropes is so cool. I look forward to every moment spent in Talia and Zayn’s world.
The characters … I love these characters. I have been invested in every one of them from the moment I first picked up Inked. I rooted for, laughed at and with, and fell in love with Talia. I got irritated at, lusted after, and cheered Zayn on. Sol is one of those villains you hate with all your heart but not because he’s some mustache twirling caricature. He has depth, he has layers, and it’s the fact that if was doing such abhorrent things he would be likable. And this book gives some spotlight to one of the best animal companions in fiction…and I include every Disney sidekick in that list. I would read entire stories dedicated to Biscuit (note to the author, this is her name and I stand by that until I die LMAO). Even the brief moments we see DeeDee here made me laugh so hard.
So last notes? Read this book!!! Immediately stop and read the whole series!!! If you enjoy any of the following: contemporary fantasy, action and romance with touches of high fantasy and Isekai/portal fantasy, and you haven’t picked this series up you are doing yourself a grave disservice. One note I will make after saying that, I have seen it is suggested to read Silver Blood after the first two books of the series, Inked and Jinxed, before Silver Blood as it gives some spoilers from Zayn’s POV for those two books. I cannot recommend this book enough to fans of the series and I can’t recommend this series in general enough!!! It was a joy to return to this world with these characters. The author does include some content warnings in this one so please take those into account and take care of yourself always!
This book is one of the best I’ve read in a long time and I hope y’all enjoy it too!

Outstandingly Original

The review you didn't know you needed for the alt POV book we didn't know we needed!
First off, highly blessed and happy to be an ARC reviewer for one of my favorite people and authors. Rachel had told us she was writing a book from Zayn's POV set before and during INKED. I had High Expectations and they were surpassed quickly.
So, if you've read the main series, you know about Talia's epic story and so many of our favorite characters, including the love intrest Zayn. Well, this is from his POV starting from when they first meet all the way up to her introduction to magic and the other realm AND IT ROCKS.
I won't hash out the story, because you need to read it, but I will offer my thoughts and insights in this wonderful tale. It offers a somewhat overlooked view of the male love interest, who is the main secondary character, but not the main and shows his thoughts and actions from a fresh perspective that doesn't detract from Talia at all, it in fact enhances her story more as you get more nuances.
First off, Bravo to Rachel for capturing such a perfect view of a non Alphahole males perspective as he falls for the girl and wants to protect her(notice not save her) from the hellscape that is his life and curse. As a male, the little things he notices, the smells, the outfits, he desire that he tamps down because he's not a jerk, all this makes me feel validated as that's how I typically am. Just because I think a woman is sexy, doesn't mean I'm gonna drool and act out at her. It shows the basic restraint and decorum a man should have and I love it. He always makes sure she's OK with him and what she wants is paramount, without emascuating him and it's glorious. A perfect mix of proper behavior and thought.
Second, we see a better view of how Zayn and his....er....family of a sort interacts more from his view and his tempestuous thoughts about it and how he deals. When just thinking bad thoughts can cause you unbearable agony, striding that fine line is so hard and he fails as often as he succeeds. Again, a wonderful balance in the character himself and it makes him seem more real. We also see a few moments of the BBEG( Big bad evil guy) in some vulnerable moments that show his reasoning to himself, but it doesn't offer redemption. Oh no, it shows just how much of a deluded bawbag he is and makes you that much happier when he gets his.
Third. Ah third, my favorite partners in crime. Dee Dee and BisKiss. While we don't hear much from Dee, what we hear is as loud, obnoxiously wonderful, and hilarious as we've grown to love and expect. Seriously, I love this woman's portrayal so much, because it's so spot on, you have no problem seeing it in your mind. She is a bombastic, loving, wonderful conundrum of a mother and fits perfectly when she's here. Which brings us to our favorite Jungle Chicken, BisKiss!
If you've read the original series, you know what a pivotal role BisKiss plays throughout and its no less here. As a matter of fact, one could argue that it's even more pivotal in SILVER BLOOD, as the actions of a certain bird lead to Talia and her awareness of magic as it were. You see how BisKiss loves Talia and how much she means to him. Of course, we also get a treat as we get BisKiss at their most sassy and snarky behavior because the Jungle Chicken is always right.
All in all, this is a fantastic read and a worthy addition to the series and I more than highly recommend it.

The prequel to the Gilded Blood series did not disappoint. Zayns POV about how he feels about Talia. How everything starts and evolves from getting his side of the story, and his feelings were epic! His reason to live his salvation. Fantastic writing, not to mention Hibiscus to Biskiss to finally the name biscuit! so cute! Definitely recommend reading this prequel!

I was very excited for this book as I’m a HUGE fan of the main series! I’m not usually a prequel kind of person but I love this story so much I was so happy to get back into the world! After reading all the shenanigans that went on in the series it was hard to start over with Zayn being back in control of Sol. That being said I loved having his POV. It really made me appreciate Zayn and everything he went through to try to protect Talia. It makes me appreciate their relationship so much more. He went through alot with Sol and seeing him so broken was very hard, just rooting for him the whole time, knowing it gets better for him throughout the series. The writing is as funny and witty as ever. Rachel really has a way of story telling that will hook you from the get go and hold your attention until the last page (and then some). This is one series that I will recommend forever to everyone and Silver Blood is a great addition to a great series.

I loved this book so much and I didn’t want it to end. This book includes some of my favorite things: A sad boi hero, banter, pining, a magical fae realm, amazing spice that is just frequent enough, and an amazing familiar that steals the show frequently providing some much needed comic relief.

I love the Gilded Bl**d series so much and this was such a wonderful addition to the world. This is a prequel but you should read the original series first because this book does contain spoilers for the main series. I loved that we finally got Zayne’s POV! There were so many things we discovered about him throughout the main series so I feel like this prequel was such a perfect way to show the reader everything going on with him leading up to the main series!

Thank you for the advanced reader copy of this book. I love this series so much and this was a wonderful addition to the world

Oh wow, Rachel!! You’ve done it again!! 😍

When hearing of the news that the Gilded Blood Series was going to have a prequel, i was literally squealing. I mean, who doesn’t want more of Zayn and Talia! … and let’s not forget Biscuit ;)

This book comes from Zayn’s POV, and we get to see exactly what had happened prior to Talia’s story. It was everything I needed! It made me laugh, feel sadness in a way my heart hurt for Zayn. But most importantly, we got to read about THAT scene! 😮 If you know, you know! 🤣

Rachel has most definitely cranked up the 🌶️ in this book, and I was all for it!

Gilded Blood fans, this is definitely worth a read! 💜

I was three hours late for work but I simply HAD to finish this book!

OH EM GEE! AMAZING!!! It’s the perfect prequel to the full series - which I immediately felt like diving back into - and so beautifully written from Zayn’s POV. I didn’t think I could love him more, but after reading this story I fell even harder for Zayn and his poor tortured soul. I laughed, I cried, I definitely swooooned... it was an absolute romantasy WIN for me!

Oh and the spice... *chef's kiss*... PERFECT 🥵 🔥

Zayn is a tortured soul; he is the Prince of the Fae realm summer court and the only survivor of his mother’s b1oodline. Her murderer has enslaved him through powerful magic, and he is now forced to live among the mundane on the Earth realm where he owns a tattoo shop in Miami Florida. The tattoo shop is a front, which enables him to perform his real work as his enslavers runemaster.
This is a prequel story to the Gilded B1ood series and is told from Zayn’s perspective. It is a fantasy that crosses over into both the contemporary and epic fantasy genres. I have read the previous four books, and they were fantastic, and I expected no less from this book. The author has an imagination that knows no bounds – from the colorful world building to the multitude of characters, it’s fast paced, intriguing, and full of surprises. Her writing is as exceptional as it is fresh.
For those who have already inhaled the first four books of the series, you will be especially happy to know this is also Zayn and Talia’s origin story! Prepare to get reacquainted with Sol and his henchmen, discover shocking revelations, and sweet Biscuit has a few surprises up its wings!
I highly recommend this book and the Gilded B1ood series.

Prequels are normally not my cup of tea, I am just not a big fan of basically knowing what will eventually happen or not and I loose interest. But I was reading for hours straight and did not want to put the book down even as my eyelids wanted to close! It was so 🔥 , way more than the original series! Zayn’s reactions to Tal was not what I was expecting!! This book just makes me love them together even more than I already did! And Bisskiss 💖 steaks the show!!!

Omg I was sooo excited for this book and I was not disappointed in the slightest!!

When Rachel announced she was writing a prequel to the Gilded Blood series, I knew I needed to read it ASAP. The book starts before Zayn and Talia meet and gives us a bit of background on Zayn and his life, then follows the storyline of Inked from Zayn’s perspective and fills in some details from his pov.

I fell in love with the characters all over again and it definitely left me wanting to re-read the Gilded Blood series. I can’t wait to have the money to add a signed copy of this to my collection too! I’m so glad Rachel found more to write about these amazing characters, I truly hope there will be more stories to come in future as I can’t bear for this to be it from Talia, Zayn and ‘Biscuit’ and the rest of them.

Wow this was a great book. This is from Zayn’s POV. I usually don’t like alternate POV because it’s essentially the same, but this book went above that and was just phenomenal. We learned more about Zayn. This book brought out all the emotions happiness and sadness. Oh and we can’t forget our fun loving, sassy familiar BisKiss. I highly recommend this book as well as any of the books in this series. I can’t wait to see what more Rachel comes out with in the future.

I absolutly LOVE this book! I like to have Zayn's point of view, it really helped understanding him and the incubus better. Not surprising but Biscuit stole the show again lol. I love the little winks to the series too, it just made me want to read them all again! It was awesome and I really enjoyed reading it! I highly recommend reading it but if you do; read Inked before.

I absolutely loved the Gilded Blood series, so I was both excited and nervous when I heard there was a prequel coming out. I shouldn't have been nervous at all. Rachel Renner delivered another wonderful book with our favorite familiar, Biscuit, and best book boyfriend, Zayn. I loved getting his POV of Talia from their start. It just was the perfect addition to the series.
