Spirou et Fantasio #9

Hämäräperäinen hylky

Rate this book

It's a mans world, dieses Comicleben in der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts.

India English Edition = 2007 = 199/- Rupees

I loved the Tintin-length (60ish pages) which allows for more dense adventure!

I delight in Champignac* science, especially in this one, which even addendumed a page of him "press-conferencing" two questions that fans often asked in appropriate detail.

I firmly believe that the Marsupilami** is always better than Spip as the animal lead.

*Goes by "Culdesac" in this one.
**Called "Beastie" in this one.

Although I read this in French, I'm writing in English because my very few followers are English speakers!
This was just wonderful! Spirou and Fantasio are journalists (like Tintin in that regard), but they have a friend, Monsieur de Champignac, who is an amazing inventor. The three of them, along with Spirou's pet squirrel and a very bizarre tigger-type animal they call Marsupilami, have a very exciting adventure on land and undersea.
I used to love reading French comic books to my children and now I read them to my grandchildren. I can't wait to read this one (the first Spirou and Fantasio I've read) to them. I wish there were more kid friendly comic books like this from the English-speaking world, but that's OK. The French ones will retain their magical feeling!

This is a 1978 hardback reprint in French from Dupuis. Originally serialised between 1954 and 1955 before publication in book form in 1957, this is a multi-layered story with truly superb elements.

The story starts with the announcement of a prize being offered to the inventor of a new submarine, reminiscent of similar prizes offered nowadays for space exploration, and quite topical at the time with the fame of Captain Cousteau. Spirou, Fantasio, and the Count join the race only to find themselves attacked by ruthlessness saboteurs. The prize turns out to be a secret salvage operation of a ship lost beneath the rocky coast; the wreck turns out to be a drug smuggling operation, hence the sabotage attempts; and then there’s more as the wreck contains the ill-gotten gold of the prize kingpin, which the drug smugglers knew nothing about. This car crash of criminal operations raises the story above the straightforward police procedural it might otherwise have been. And the sheer inventiveness of the material used by Spirou and Fantasio is cutting-edge even today. The description of the deep sea must also have been utterly novel at a time when Cousteau was only just revealing all this science to the public, and makes for a very tense story in itself.

The artwork is gorgeous if a bit simple, as is the narrative, due to the publisher’s format and the intended audience of children, but this story certainly stirs the imagination. Almost a “wow”, but not quite.

Just looking at the cover is a treat. I love how ty always come up with some fabulous invention that knocks your socks off. This story has mystery after mystery and ten when you think it is all settled, there is one more. I loved the hen that picks at the clock to make it sound the alarm, the underwater drawings, the one man submarine that is filled with water so there is no atmospheric pressure, the way Marsupiliami swims and catches fish because he is AMPHIBIAN! The drawings of them sitting in patios drinking cold stuff with the ice floating in the glasses, the drawn palm trees, and how in the evening, they sit outside their villa, with the shutters semi open with enough light to illuminate their darken patio! If I could be a drawn character, this would be my book! I think it is cool to see how much they worry about their docile little marsupiliami friend without realizing how ferocious he is when they are not around, but mostly the way he blows his nose after a deep diving fun day!
