Getting Out

Rate this book
Because of mature content this book is intended for ages 17+

The saying "You got handed the short end of the stick" didn't even apply, I'd never even seen the stick, let alone the short end. Ashton Becker has lived her entire life being trapped in a nightmare she can't wake up from. For as long as she can remember her parents have abused her both physically and mentally. She knows there has to be more to life than this and she finds it when she gets accepted to boarding school hundreds of miles away from everything she has ever known. She jumps at the opportunity to finally get out…
Charlie Ingram is the town's golden boy. He's handsome, a promising hockey star, and student body president. To everyone around him his life looks picture perfect and he's set on the path for greatness. The only problem is he hates the robot-like person he has become. What happens when these two meet? Will their paths lead to each other or will they both be too focused on Getting Out?

This was an okay read, but it dragged a bit.

Ashton was an okay character, and I felt sorry for her at the start, as her home life wasn't good.
Charlie wasn't a bad character, but it took me a while to warm to him, and even then I didn't love him.

This was an okay read, but at times I felt bored. Some parts were dragged out far too much, and I just want it to get a move on!

I didn't love the ending, but it was alright.

Pretty terrible

I'm sorry, but I did not like this. There were a lot of grammatical mistakes and the writing was so stilted. There weren't enough contractions, so conversations felt awkward and fake. I did not like the main character Ashton, at all. I felt bad for her that she grew up in a terrible environment, but she was always super dramatic and running away because she thought it was better for Charlie. Get over yourself already, geez. The ending was stupid and made me hate Ashton even more. I will not be reading the next book.

Rating: House/Well Debut YA novel for the young at heart.

Bartender Banter Review:

Des: YA books have a delicate line to tread . There's a lesson to learn, a coming of age metaphor that will make an appearance, but you can't shove it down the reader's throat. It needs to happen organically; the story needs to flow and the reader needs to be there next to the characters.

Jen:  I have to be honest YA is not my preferred genre.  I love dark, angsty, books.  Getting Out was the first YA  book that truly held my interest.  I could not put it down.

I drove around for awhile trying to clear my head. I was thinking too much about things like my grades, and hockey, and my issues with my dad… and then there was Ashton. I felt better when I thought about her, it’s like everything else melted away when her beautiful face was in my mind. Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 501-502). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

Des: All the characters in Getting Out have issues, as do the majority of teens. These characters, however, weren't helpless. They all seemed to have a plan to better their lives. No one was 'saving' the other, they all leaned on each other.

Jen:  Ditto on that!  ^^  Good point, no one was trying to "save" the other.   Maybe that is why I enjoyed this book.  All the characters were strong on their own.

I locked myself in the bathroom and started the shower wishing that the hot water could wash away the scars that were on my body, but also the ones inside my head. I was falling in love with him. I hated that he pointed out my imperfections. They weighed heavy on me already, but when he asked about them, and made the memories come back, it was so much worse.Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 2045-2047). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

Des: What I appreciated about this YA is that it's so simplistic, believable and relatable. The very emotional events aren't too far flung. There are moments of love, lust, confusion and fear that is understandable for teenagers. I am immediately turned off by sex scenes with teenagers when they are acting way beyond their experience. I no longer believe the situation or the attempts the author is making to keep it sweet and vulnerable.

Jen:  Lol nothing is more unbelievable than when a character goes from virgin to porn star.
Afton Brinkman did a great job with relationships in the book, they were appropriate for the character age, and felt natural.

“Fuck that,” I heard him growl before he spun me around and crashed his lips to mine in a ferocious kiss that was anything but gentle. And just like that, any rational thinking on my part was gone. We kissed each other with all the pain and frustration we felt. It was rough and borderlined on pain but felt like it was exactly what we both needed. His fingers dug into my back crushing me against him and my hands pulled his hair so hard I knew it had to hurt but he just growled into my mouth. He pushed me back against the side of the truck and lifted me up. I immediately wrapped my legs around his waist and continued to kiss and nip and suck at his mouth.
“Does this feel like I don’t own you Ashton? Does it? Because you completely own me.” Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 3203-3209). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

Des: Aghh cliff-hangers! No one likes them. "WHAT THE HELL? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!" When I finished Getting Out, I said to myself, "Damn, that's a good cliff-hanger." Sure, it would have been nice to know what's next, but I also like to have the characters suspended in that moment; for me to walk away, contemplate the interest I have for them, and come back to them when I am ready. Obviously, this story has made an impact and I can't wait to read what happens with Ashton & Charlie. Noah too! Damn Noah!

Jen: Initially, I was not happy with the way Getting Out ended, I am so done with cliff-hangers. After thinking it over for a few days, (because yes it's one of those that will give you a book hangover) I came to the conclusion it is not truly a cliff-hanger, but a closing of one part of the story.   Did I want the second part of the story right then and there? Of Course! But, I think the second book will open a new chapter in life for Ashton.  I have a feeling I may be upset by some of the choices she makes but I am invested and want to see where Ashton, Charlie, Noah and Tess go.

I think this was an amazing debut novel for Afton Brinkman and look forward to reading more!

QUOTES:
“Ah here you are.” Clicking her pen to mark my name off. I hadn’t been here ten minutes and the woman had already managed to give me a mini heart attack.
Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 241-242). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

“See you later Ashton,” he called out. My name sounded amazing coming from his beautiful mouth, like he was the only person in the world meant to say it . He had his hands in his pockets and was walking backwards, looking me right in the eye when he said it. I gave him a frown as he winked and turned back around sauntering away. Yep that was such a player move.Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 460-462). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

Tess was quiet for a long moment then out of the blue she said something that nobody had ever said to me before.
“I’m so glad I met you.”
I looked at her, nodding my head. “Me too."Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 799-800). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

“Say what you want to say but I am staying right here and do not touch me again.”
Hearing her say she didn’t want me to touch her was like a slash to my insides. If she only knew how it felt for me when I touched her, held her, kissed her…Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 1893-1895). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

“Beautiful girl, this is a promise ring. My promises to you are to never hurt you and never allow anyone else to either, I promise to be faithful, and most of all, I promise that someday, when we are both ready, I will give you two more rings that take us into our future together forever because that is exactly what I want. I know we are young but I know that I want you. Forever.”Brinkman, Afton (2014-04-14). Getting Out (Getting Out Series) (Kindle Locations 3717-3720). Afton Brinkman. Kindle Edition.

WTF? First, I really liked this book. Yes, it was a roller coaster ride, and the characters did not seem like high school students...AT ALL, but I liked the maturity that they showed....even their immaturity made sense. The ending....hmmm, first, there is no way that Charlie let her disappear for four and a half months...nope, no way, don't believe it. Ashton ran...shocker! While I can believe that he may have given her a day or two of space....four and a half months??? Nope. So this cliffhanger has me baffled. Will I read book two? Um, yeah! What the heck is going on?

I liked this book enough to give it 4 stars. Honestly, the ending was reason enough to give it only four...but it probably only deserves 3 because of the terrible editing. How an author is incapable of using conjunctions but can write sentences saying, "I seen the way...." Ummm....not good at all. So my feelings on this go like this....when I am writing something, no matter what it is, I tend to have run on sentences. I write and write just trying to get my thoughts out before I forget. My point is that I totally understand grammatical errors and things like that. So do I blame the author...not completely. It is the editors job to go through and find these mistakes. So, do I blame the editor? Not completely. If I had written this book and sent it off to my editor, I would be combing through it to make sure that I couldn't find anything my editor had missed. I don't think I would want my name attached to something unless I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it was ready for the public. Those are my thoughts...rant over.

2.5/3 Stars

This story started out really good, but then at 50% it just fell flat and all over the place. The premise was so good, but in the end the execution was weak. It dragged on and on. A lot could have been cut.

Dual POVs. Te switch happened to quickly. It would have been better if it was written in one POV.

Hero is a hockey player. The heroine comes from an abusive home. They meet. Heroine is leery of the hero being a player.

Also, I thought in boarding schools uniforms were a requirement. The characters in this story do not wear school uniforms.

There is a cliffy, but I won't be reading the sequel.

Did not like or enjoy any of it. I rolled my eyes 89% through it. I sided with Charlie's father! This young kid had such a good thing going until he meets white trash ashton. I could not connect with her. The only one I liked was Noah. He was such a sweetie. She had to go for the popular man whore jock though!!! as usual in every darn book.

Could not read this book! There were typos and the language was robotic and repetitive language, and I was only on chapter 2. These aspects detract from a book and stop me from disappearing into a story because it is so distracting.

Getting Out could have been part of my favorites list if: 1) Ashton didn't do a lot of things that were too immature for me and 2) if the book didn't end in a cliffhanger.

Charlie is my favorite character in the book. Despite being a manwhore in the past, he proved how much he loves Ashton despite Ashton's insecurities (especially when it comes to Jaimie) and constant running when things get tough. As mentioned, Ashton acted immature several times in the book and the act that I hated the most was when she kept going to Noah and actually flirting with him even if she said that she has no feelings for him. She might didn't realize that she was flirting but what she did with Noah and what she allowed Noah to do to her are just not right when there is a boyfriend loyally waiting for her and trusting her.

The cliffhanger just made me sad. I really wanted to know the ending of Charlie and Ashton's relationship. What made me devastated is that the second book, Getting Closer, has not yet been published and I am not sure if the author still has plans on continuing the story, considering that the first book was released 2 years ago. I really hope that in the second book, Charlie will stop chasing after Ashton and Ashton realizes that she has stop running every time.

This book was a okay read, the story line was interesting enough and the writing wasn't the worst. The problem with this book is I read it when it first came out in 2014 and it is now 2016. Its coming up to TWO YEARS I've been waiting for this book, the only reason I even remember reading this book waaaay back when is because of the stupid cliff hanger ending! I can't say I hate cliff hanger endings, they're definitely not my favourite, but I can live with them in a few books. The ending for this one was a big one, it was good and made me want to read the next book, which is what every author wants! So I did what anyone would do and looked up when the next book was coming out, on Afton Brinkmans Facebook page she posted it was coming out soon, so I was a happy camper and kept checking every once in a while if it was out... almost two years later its still not out ! I wouldn't be soo upset is the author didn't KEEP posting that is was almost done and coming out soon. I can wait for a book, I'm a very patient person, just don't tease me with release dates. I'm not sure I want to read the next book its been so long!

3 stars. Getting Out was a pretty good read. I didn't know it was a series at first though. So that caught me off guard a bit. Mainly though I wasn't very happy with the ending. It felt more like something that just happened to up the drama and not something that would be more logical for the plot progression. I mean, the epilogue was totally opposite of what Charlie would do. I don't believe he would have let the epilogue happen that way. Will I read the sequel? Probably. I want to see if the author addresses why the epilogue happened that way. I need an explanation.

The storyline was okay but the writing wasn’t realistic to how actual people talk. I don’t walk around all day saying….I am this or I am that. It’s not a big deal until you’re 50% through and skipping chapters because you can’t stand to hear the characters talk to each other. And when her parents come back to get her; talk about anticlimactic. And Charlie Ingram is ridiculous, I actually didn’t want him to get the girl because most leading men you root for, most couples you root for. Not these.

Will I read again?

Absolutely not.

This book is like yoyo going up and down all the way through til the end. One minute they're good and happy the next minute there's new drama unfolded. I didnt really get why ashton always run away especially towards the end when she runaway from charlie again when she found out her parents got sent to jail, she said she didnt care about her parents but she was making a big deal out of it..
All in all though this book is a good read Im not sure if i wanna read the sequel though..

Fire the editor

often, I read indie books that other readers have remarked about poor editing and it's effect on the reading experience, and I think, "that didn't affect me much." That was not the case here! This book had a lot of potential - emotionally engaging characters and a great plot line, but it was torture trying to read the book. This wasn't just a few typos or run-on sentences, it was the most atrocious editing I have ever seen in a published work.

It's a shame there is no such thing as grammar-check.

While I thought the story line was a good one, I'm wondering where the editor was for this book. So many misspelled words that I lost track. "Starred" instead of "stared". "Your"instead of "you're". "Seen" instead of "saw". "To" instead of "too". Sentences that ran on and on without any punctuation. It was bad.

Enjoyed the book...

Thought this book was really good. Even though Ashton had a little bit to much problems/drama there in the middle. Worked it self out in the end. Charlie had just enough of good and bad. Great cliff hanger there are the end.
