Despite reading a lot of vampire stories over the years some good and some not okay, well, I still do definitely read them just to read another amazing vampire romance just like this one.

Cailey just turned out to be one of those humans who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The only good thing though that the vampire who saved her turned out to be the good guy but all is not simple with this plot. There's a lot of twist and turns. I kind of figured something out with a deranged human turned vamoire but that's all I'm spoiling. The rest you just got to read in order to find out.

Although I must say I kind of disliked Cailey with her doing dumb things that ends up not in a good way. Although I do like the witty humor they have.

I loved their family and I can't wait to read more about the others' own story.

I'd highly recommend this series to those who loves a good vampire romance with a much more plot and what's nice about it, is that the main characters is the Blautsauger family. It kind of reminds of the Argeneau Family Series by Lynsay Sanda minus the Atlantis origin. Although there are other things involved which makes the book interesting like another mythology but definitely not Atlantis.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)

An extremely captivating and imaginative novel of 'It's a Wonderful Undead Life'.
Who doesn't love a good vampire themed read with an exotic flair of different languages and romantic interludes that come into play. The true essence of a very different Christmas back drop gives way to the talent of RE Mullins.

The main character Cailey, doesn't want to spend another Christmas alone, her world seems to be caving in around her and it seems life just wont give her a break. A failed marriage, no family to speak of, and in total financial ruin - Whats more is that she's just been attacked by a rogue vampire while walking home late one night. Now she's kind of dead, well half-dead..... and the vampire whom turned her needs to feed Cailey in order for her to survive.

The mystery of the plot thickens with unexpected twists and turns galore, with a fun writing style and some laugh-out-loud moments of humorous wit, this novel is entwined with a dark mythical legend that explores blood in a whole new mouth watering delight.
A novel that you really need to sink your teeth into and steal the reality that just maybe, be your final read. So, lock your windows, and place garlic upon your bedpost, for tonight is the night they feed.

It’s A Wonderful Undead Life is a paranormal romance set in Amber Heights, Missouri.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Cailey has little to celebrate; she lost her mother in a horrific car accident, then found her husband was cheating on her. Divorced and choosing to spend the holidays alone, Cailey drowns her sorrows in whisky and an old film. Her wishes for an angelic saviour see her staggering drunkenly to a bridge overlooking the river, as she tries to replicate a scene from the movie. But instead of an angel, a vampire appears and bites her.

Vincent Sabriento is seeking to create a half human/ half vampire; this is a forbidden being and one he wants Gabriel Blautsauger to get the blame for. In a territorial war, the Toltec vampires want to discredit the powerful Nosferatu tribe.

Cailey is discovered by Gabe and his siblings. She’ll die unless they turn her into a full vampire. Will it be enough evidence to stop the council turning against Gabe and his family? Will the council believe there is a Toltec threat?

This is a fun, easy read, following popular vampire themes. Ideal for those who enjoy paranormal love stories. It’s book #1 of a series, so a good place to begin, with more romance to follow in the next books.

Audio Review

It's Christmas and Cailey is alone. Her mother has died, she is divorced. Sitting at home she gets drunk watching It's a Wonderful Life and heads to the bridge thinking she has nothing to live for and everything would be better if she died. She is brutally attacked and all she can say is Gabriel Blautsauger bit her, she hates him.

Someone is out to destroy Gabriel Blautsauger by framing him of serial killings and illegal turnings. ut the last victim lived because Gabe's sister figured out whose blood was in Cailey. Gabe corrected the bad turn and took Cailey as his.

This is a cute story. The vampires don't sparkle but they are not vicious either... well there is the good ones and the bad ones. There is a lot of wist and turns, many surprises and the romance is hot as well.

I loved Clarke Bellflower's voice. It is sweet, unique and she did do a few extra voices for the characters. Her accents for the vampires was cute too. I think she really made the story.

Another of my first reads books, and again first from R. E Mullins.
It started of good, straight into the story and fast paced, funny, with good characters. This book tells the story of Cailey, a lonely young woman who on christmas eve gets drunk at home alone wathing Its a wonderful life and decides to go for a walk. She is attacked by a vampire, nearly drained of blood, she later falls in the river and is rescued by a group of vampires who look after her and nurse her back to health. A story of friendship, family betrayal and love. A nice, book, with a slightly disappointing ending, that did feel a bit rushed, but overall a worthy read.

I love paranormal romance so it wasn't difficult for me to read "It's a Wonderful Undead Life" by R.E. Mullins. This book was very easy to get into and has some interesting spins in it that sets it apart from other paranormal romance books. This book constantly surprised me and wasn't predictable which was nice. I absolutely adored Gabriel. He is a character that sticks with you. Cailey was a bit of a headache at times but I guess that is part of her charm. Overall a pretty great read!

Review posted @ http://tsukibooks.blogspot.com & http://fightforyourwrite.blogspot.com

I really hate giving books a "Did Not Finish" rating but usually it just means I didn't like it enough to trudge through it in order to give it a one-star review. When it gets to that point I wrestle with the concept of reviewing it when I did not even finish it. How can I truly give a review when I never got to the end and in this case, only 45% in?

This is my reasoning behind my decision to review it anyway. I am a negative review reader. I want to know what the problem was for some people. Sometimes it is the price and other times it was inconsistencies in plot or poor storytelling. In this case it was a little of everything from characters to plot to mythology. I pretty much had an issue with everything.

The story begins with a vampire killing a human. The opening seems like an attempt to set the stage like in many paranormal romances. The reader gets a glimpse of the paranormal elements and the first (or sometimes only) conflict. Quickly the story shifts to Cailey who is having a terrible time with the Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life (hence the title). Cailey is attacked by the vampire in the prologue and left for dead. From there she meets vampires and becomes one herself.

I pretty much stopped reading right after she became a vampire. At that point I realized I couldn't stand another moment of the vampire family or Cailey's ridiculous behavior. I also cared very little for the villain, secondary characters or pretty much anything.

Cailey is completely unlikeable and unrealistic in most of the scenes. She whines about the movie and Christmas. She rationalizes walking home in a seedy part of town in the dark because her ride needs five more minutes at work. Frankly I was hoping the vampire would just kill her by this point. She then gets attacked and runs away from the people trying to help her. She rationalizes her need for blood and sensitivity to light in about three paragraphs and just accepts it. She actually formulates a plan to survive, which I respected, but she implemented it horribly.

Gabe (the hero, I guess) was also so childish and unrealistic as an ancient vampire I had to put it down multiple times to get over the laughing. Gabe acts like he's twenty-two years old or younger. He has insta-love with Cailey or at least instant attraction. When she says something about her 'mentor/sire' being horrible he gets offended even though it is obvious she is talking about the vampire who attacked her.

The entire vampire family is unrealistic. I understand sibling dynamics and I love them in paranormal romances but this was ridiculous. The siblings act like four twenty year olds with little wisdom or actual life experience. Michaela (Gabe's sister) wants to let Cailey die although she believes in healing people. Metta (Gabe's other sister) spends the time while Cailey is dying to rhapsodize about the hero. Rafe (Gabe's brother) is like the kid brother everyone finds annoying. They act like a group of people no one would want to hang around.

Not only are the characters unrealistic but events shift so much I couldn't keep up. Cailey mentions she's dying and sort of seems like one more breath will kill her. She then spends a few pages discussing Michaela's research, Cailey's ex husband, and political correctness in vampire society. If I was dying those would all be the last of my concerns. Also I might want them to start going on and on about how my becoming a vampire saves their butts.

The other major issue I had was the technical terminology used. I understand Cailey worked in the medical profession but anything pertaining to medicine was overly complicated and spiffed up to sound pretentious. The author used words/phrases like 'sphygmomanometer', 'oximeter', 'subnormal temperature', etc. As someone who is not in the medical profession this threw me out of the book and made me skim through hospital scenes. Say her temperature is low and they're monitoring her and then move on please.

I had trouble with the writing style and the 'as you know' writing. The mythology seemed thrown in to easily explain 'good vampires' and 'convenient plot points' rather than a real grasp of vampire mythology. I have no problem with creative mythology but it seemed like it was a hybrid of a bunch of different mythologies to the point it made vampires seem normal and humans abnormal. Also the combination of Nyx and Cassiopeia seemed a little too convenient. It left me wishing for better story-building.

I struggled on each page to read about Cailey and Gabe. I hated both characters and the situations in the book. When she became a vampire I actually thought it would have been a good ending place. All the book would have required was a quick stand-off between Gabe and Vincent. That was it! That point in the story would have set up another novel and left things shorter. I would have much preferred it.

This was not my cup of tea at all. I wish the author had taken a little more time developing the characters and building the world around them. It had potential with the general premise and the idea of the vampire family but if fell way short.

After downloading the sample, I bought the whole book which didn't live up to the first few chapters. In this case, you may not be able to tell by the free download whether it will be worth the purchase. There were a lot of overused tropes, many parts just felt silly (I know it's a fantasy, but still), and it just plain didn't work for me. A disappointment.

I really did enjoy this book. It is a vampire book but it's so much more. It's family drama, momma drama and scary drama all in one. I will have to look into the second book but with my book list so long, it might have to wait a while.

Pretty good. Would have given this one a 4-star rating but reduced by one full star due to bad narrator.

I will be getting the next in series but I hope there is another narrator!

REVIEW:

There are plenty of holiday tributes out there - enough to fill a month of Hunky Days and then some. More often than not, they are pre-established stories that pull in a holiday story arc. These are like the Christmas presents you have asked for and know you're going to love. However, every once in a Christmas moon a rare and exciting thing happens - the gift that you didn't expect but is absolutely perfect. Finding R E Mullins was my unexpected Christmas gift this year!

It's a Wonderful Undead Life takes the best concepts and themes of the beloved Frank Capra holiday classic and completely reworks them for a creative and captivating read. Yes Virginia, it is another paranormal vampire series but happily one with truly unique features - it's own mythos and rules and an action packed story that the reader doesn't see coming!

The characters are believable, the dialogue fresh and snappy, the story itself full of twists and turns that make for a great page turner. Cailey as the George Bailey archetype wishing for her own Clarence for clarity tugs at the readers' heartstrings without being too painfully maudlin - she makes the best kind of heroine: strong but not invincible, hopeful depite hopeless circumstances and fiercely loyal to those she loves. Even better, the romance between Cailey and Gabe is fun, unfolds at a pace that has that kind of glowing afterburner kick like a Bailey's spiked cocoa - warm and sweet going down with an extra jolt!

Mullins writing style is highly readable and It's a Wonderful Undead Life is extremely well edited. Scenes flow seamlessly and the secondary characters - namely the rest of the Blautsauger clan and her best friend Morgan - each have moments of stealing the spotlight, delivering witty banter and providing the kind of charm that makes a reader want more stories from this delightfully created world.

Grab yourself a cup of your favorite holiday cheer, a cozy chair and settle in for a not-too-long winter's read with It's a Wonderful Undead Life! May it be the surprise gift under your tree this year as well!

It's a Wonderful Undead Life is nothing short of a fantastic read. I didn't know what to expect from this author as I hadn't read her before, but after winning a copy of her book, the title alone would have intrigued me to pick up a copy. I will definitely be following R.E. Mullins' Amber Heights series. For the record, I don't have a lot of time to read, but with this book I found myself actually searching for free moments in which to do so. That says a lot about the story.

The main character, Cailey, is a Phlebologist, so she knows a lot about blood–or thought she did. I found her character so likable. Gabriel (Gabe) is a drop-dead gorgeous vampire who adheres to the old gentleman ways, which totally infuriates Cailey. When they meet it's certainly not under ordinary circumstances.

The story begins on Christmas Eve, but this is not your typical Frank Capra holiday classic. Far from it. Cailey is having a woe-is-me Christmas for a multitude of reasons. Because of them she decides to get drunk and find her own angel on the bridge. Unfortunately, what she finds is a rogue vamp. She's turned...well, almost. She becomes a half-dead, and if not fed by the vamp's blood who has turned her, she'll die. This is where Gabe Blautsauger, his brother Rafe and his sisters step in. Cailey has never known a real family, and the Blautsaugers are anything but normal, but like her I fell in love with each of them.

Without giving too much away, Cailey is caught in a set-up to frame Gabe and the Blautsauger clan. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of intrigue, witty dialogue, and some very tense moments that will have you giggling along with the characters. Yes, you read that correctly.

I found R.E. Mullins writing style fun and she tells it like it is. Even though there are some erotic moments, they're tastefully written in way that even a young adult could read the book.

I give It's a Wonderful Undead Life five thumbs up. If you're reading this, Robin, I'll be waiting, rather impatiently, I might add, for Book II of The Blautsaugers of Amber Heights.

I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed!

The vampire genre has been a highly saturated literary category for years. Aficionados of vampire novels have long been on a quest to find the next Interview With a Vampire or The Hunger. Fans of the genre are invariably disappointed by clones of popular novels peppered with purloined characters and shopworn plots. Those who love vampire fiction are always searching for something new.

With her first novel, It’s a Wonderful Undead Life, writer R. E. Mullins has taken on the challenge and brought a fresh take to the genre. Mullins has broken through the ranks of shopworn undead novels with generous doses of humor and romance. Author Mullins has written an unlikely heroine for her vampire series. Instead of an angst-filled teen, or a nubile beauty in her twenties, Mullins has woven her tale around a thirties-something protagonist, Cailey Kantor, a divorced woman who lives a quiet existence in a fictional hamlet, Amber Heights, Missouri.

Cailey’s world continues to move at an even keel until one disastrous Christmas Eve. The realities of her financial situation rock Cailey’s humdrum life as a phlebotomist to its core. Between tumblers of booze and snippets of the holiday classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, Cailey realizes she’s worth more dead than alive. Intoxicated and depressed, she decides to end it all by jumping off the local bridge ala James Stewart in the film. It’s just Cailey’s luck to encounter a fanged baddie who proceeds to use her as part of his hellish and vindictive agenda. At that point, the story takes off like a rocket landing Cailey into a complex universe of familial ties, duplicity, and romance with a charming hipster who also happens to be a slightly chauvinistic vampire.

Mullins writes a complex story then with her tongue planted squarely in her cheek, uses her own medical experience to inject new blood into the world of the vampire. Despite the length (340 pages), It’s a Wonderful Undead Life is a fresh take on an oversaturated genre and definitely worth the read.

5 * Review of It’s a Wonderful Undead Life by R.E Mullins

Cailey wanted Christmas to be over and done with. She had lost her mother when she was young, her marriage had recently broken up and then on Christmas Eve she receives news from her bank that she was worth more dead than alive.

In her attempt to get through Christmas she drinks herself into oblivion then goes for a walk by the river. Cailey’s Christmas goes from bad to worse when she runs into a tall, blonde stranger on a bridge by the river. Before she knows what is happening, the stranger depletes her of the majority of her blood and leaves her for dead.

Gabriel Blautsauger finds Cailey on the bridge and tries to find a way to keep her alive. Gabe is an very handsome, elegant vampire who finds himself instantly connected to Cailey.

The story flows seamlessly from scene to scene and all of the characters have a unique and distinct voice. The passion between Cailey and Gabe leap off the page and can be felt as if you were there in the room with them. The secondary characters Michaela, Metta, Rafe (Gabe's siblings) and Morgan (Cailey's best friend) were funny and entertaining ... especially Rafe and Morgan but I will let you read into that storyline on your own.

It's a wonderful undead life is a fantastic read that grabs you from the first line right until the last paragraph. Unfortunately while I was reading this book I was pulled away on family matters and wasn't able to get back to it for quite sometime. While I wasn't able to read it I found myself thinking about it and wondering what was going to happen next. When I was finally able to focus my attention back towards the book I couldn't put it down again.

There were many twists and unexpected turns in this book and I enjoyed it so much, I quite honestly cannot wait to read the next instalment in the series.

I love when I get a book and it’s from a new author that I have never read before. I like to read books by authors that are new to me. I can’t wait to read something different and see how they bring their characters to life.

I loved reading about Cailey and Gabriel. The way that she was turned into a vampire isn’t the way I would want. She gets it made up to her though. I just got so into this book and I didn’t want to put it down. I connected with the characters and didn’t want to let them go.

The author did a great job with her research. All the technical blood stuff was a little over my head. I could just pretend that I knew what they were saying. That way I would look smarter. Maybe I will memorize some of it and freak some people out with my knowledge.

I liked the way that the story was written and I had a easy time keeping up with all the excitement. Even though Cailey and Gabriel bumped heads and didn’t always agree. I had some laughs because it was just funny. That’s the relationship that I have with my husband and I love it when I read a book that makes me think of that. I don’t feel so weird.

I really enjoyed the different languages in the book. When you cuss in Russian it really does sound exotic. I enjoyed this book from the first time I picked it up until I had to put it down because I had reached the last page. I am hoping that this will become a series. I want to know more about Gabriel’s siblings and his father.

I just want to say that I recommend this book to anyone that loves vampires and loves a great love story with some exotic languages.

As a reader, with this genre, you know going into the book that it will obviously be about vampires. However, the way that Mullins makes this unreality a reality is amazing. Through Mullins words, the reader feels like they can be a part of this fantasy she weaves.

The introduction of Cailey, the main character, leaves the reader with the want for more for this poor woman that has lived a life of misery. As a phlebotomist who lost her mother to cancer, she doesn’t’ really want to participate in Christmas…the rituals, the people, the food – she doesn’t want any of it. But watching It’s a Wonderful Life changed her life forever…literally.

Getting tangled up with the highly ranking vampire clan of the Blautsaugers proves to give Cailey just the change in life she needed. The actual changing of Cailey, and how she and others deal with the mystery around this is intriguing. Finding out how it truly happened, and watching this mystery of a plot unfold was mesmerizing. Laughing out loud on several occasions, as well as being “sucked in”, this was a book I didn’t want to put down. Staying up late into the night (and secretly hoping the gorgeous Gabe would visit during those times) to read this gem just to find out what will happen next was on my nightly to do list. Being left with little snippets into what the next edition in the series just might hold gives such excitement and want for the reader as to what exactly the Blautsauger family might endure next!!

I received an ecopy of the book from the author, in exchange for an honest review, via the Goodreads group Lovers of Paranormal.

Caileys life is falling apart. She's lost her mother, split from her husband and now finds out she is practically penniless. She tries to take her mind off things by drowning her sorrows in a bottle of whiskey and watching It's A Wonderful Life on repeat (personally I don't know which one is worse, the booze or the film haha ) Her life takes a dramatic turn for the worst when she goes to find Clancey the Guardian angel to change her fate. But who she meets is not quite what she bargained for.

I quite enjoyed this book. It was refreshing to read a vamp story that isn't like all the others, with the same clichés and same story lines. The story progresses at a decent pace and certainly has a few little plot twists thrown in to keep you entertained.

Cailey is a strong female lead who knows what she wants and doesn't fall into the damsel in distress category, which I thought was well played. She knows her own mind and isn't afraid to speak out and voice her opinions, even when sometimes she really should keep her mouth shut and play nice. But where's the fun in that? I really related to her and wanted to see how she progressed through the story. I also really liked the secondary characters, especially Metta. I hope we get to hear more of her and the others as the series progresses.

I'm looking forward to the next book and finding out how Cailey takes to her new life.

I loved this book. And I am not one to say that lightly. I must confess that if I'd seen this on the shelf I probably would have walked past it as the cover and the title are not something that would normally pique my interest. However, I received this book from the author in return for an honest review and I'm so glad I did.
The story follows Cailey, a Phlebotomist who has had a few recent blows in her life. And then it gets worse. She is attacked and . . . well I don't want to give too much away. The story has many twists and turns as all good books should have and although it's mentioned, it doesn't follow the complete story of "It's a Wonderful Life" as I suspected. I might have ended the book a little earlier than the author did, but that's a personal taste thing.
The main character, Cailey, is how I imagine Buffy would have been if her story had begun in her early thirties, instead of High School. (The Countess' highest form of praise) She is sassy, determined, caring and flawed. All the best things. The other characters in the book are just as complex and entertaining as she is. I cannot recommend this book, or it's author, RE Mullins, more.

What fun! This contemporary vampire romance novel is filled with just about everything you could want in a supernatural love story! The author very successfully engages you with her charming characters as they explore magic, mystery, myths, and of course romance! With Christmas thrown into the mix I was hooked.

Cailey is the main character, a divorcee with money problems, she didn't think her life could get any worse when she found herself alone after a long shift on Christmas eve. After a few drinks she winds up going outside and being attacked by a blonde vampire who leaves her for dead. With the appearance of Gabriel, her main love interest, she discovers that she is becoming a vampire and needs his help and the help of his family members to make the turn complete or else she faces death. Along the way there are several plot twists and enough action to keep you reading!
Gabe the babe is absolutely adorable! can't wait for the next book.

If you love vampire books give this one a try! I couldn't put it down.

I received a free digital edition from the author in exchange of an honest review

This is one of the most amazing vampire books I’ve read. And I can say I have some experience in this department. It has everything: a good vampire story, with legends and bits of history, some love, a lot of amusing lines and actions!

Cailey is caught in the Toltec’s hate for the Blautsaugers and used as a revenge plan. In the night of Christmas Eve, she is left in half-life by a vampire from the Toltec clan, in an attempt to frame Gabriel Blautsauger. She will have to choose between an easy death and a life as a vampire. Either options don’t appeal to her very much, but she will make her choice to save the innocent.

Gabe will do his best to be a good teacher for her, in this new life and they both will discover together the bond they share. A story with an unexpected twist unfolds; one that I’m sure will keep you between the pages till the end. For a complete review, feel free to check my blog:

I got a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review from a good reads group....

First of all. This book started honestly surprising.... not your average girl going to collage that has her perfect life sorted then shit happens... this starts with cailey already at rock bottoms... In a very real believable situation that could happen to anyone ... then her life gets a little worse before it gets better.

Book had me reading in between bus trips and car rides with eagerness to see what the heck is going to happen next. love he character build between the 2 best friends. And altho It doesn't highlight in a lot of the other characters personalities of the family. I still found this a very good read. has none of that " he told me I should stay in my room but I'm gonna go against his word and go explore and get into stupid uneeded trouble " childish stuff which I found to be a great bonus as it saved me from a lot of eye rolling..

Would recommend to anyone that is looking for a vampire adult read.

I received a free copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review. I give this book a 3.5 star rating. This is the first book in the Blautsaugers of Amber Heights series. There is violence and some sex. This is a standalone book but has an open ending for future books in the series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more about the Blautsauger family.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. I liked that the story started out differently from the typical vampire romance story. There's a lot going on in the storyline from multiple characters. Though ultimately this book is about Gabe and Cailey. She is headstrong and determined to prove that she doesn't need anyone. He is just as headstrong and wants to keep Cailey close, and he unwittingly puts her in harm's way by not giving her enough information about being a vampire. Can they learn to trust each other enough to be honest and succeed in fighting those trying to harm them?

** I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Lovers of Paranormal, LoP**

'It's a Wonderful Undead Life' is a good story that is somewhat different than the usual vampire stories I've read. The storyline itself was intriguing and held my attention. The way it was written, I thought the characters and the story's premise was well thought out. The characters were great. Cailey is such a selfless and likable character. Even when she doubted her self worth, she still did it in regards to her fear of being a hindrance to others. Morgan was a hoot. She is definitely best friend material. I loved how she stood up to Rafe. What a couple. And then there's Gabe. He's a great guy, sometimes, and he's hot. This series, 'Blautsaugers of Amber Heights', is one I'll definitely read more of. A good add to your tbr list.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to author Robin Mullins and Lovers of Paranormal.

Not as good as book 2 of the series but still a good read and hard to put down. I actually had to force myself to stop reading and go to bed.
I liked Cailey, she kicked butts! I liked Gabe, though I didn't like him much at times. I shared Cailey's feelings and annoyance when he treated her like a stupid child. But he was also really cute at times. I even kind of liked Michaela in this book. Rafe... well.. let's just say I wasn't impressed. But he gets a little better in book 2. I liked Morgan and also Andris. And Metta.
A really nice read.
