ಗೆಳೆಯರೂ, ಈಗ ತಾನೆ ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಬಂದಂತೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಬರಹಗಾರರೂ ಆದ Karanam Pavan Prasad ಅವರ 'ಕರ್ಮ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿ ಪಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಕೂತು ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ.
ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ವಿಧ.ಓದಿ ಮರೆಯುವವು.ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ಸಸ್ಪೆಸ್ನ್ ತೆರೆ ಬಿದ್ದೊಡನೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ತಣಿದಂತೆ ತ್ರಪ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗೆ ಇಳಿದು ನಾವಿರುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬೇರೆಯ ಅವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಕರಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವವು.
ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಎರಡನೆಯ ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು.

Lovely well narrated book.
This book holds up mirror to the society. I am glad i read this book. I love the way writer have used Sanskrit Shlokas and love the way how story moves back and forth. Hope more of author's books get translated. I have eyes on Grastha and Nanni.

ಸನಾತನ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಆಚರಣೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ಶ್ರದ್ದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳ ತಾಕಲಾಟದ ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ, ಈ ಕೃತಿಯ ಗೆಲುವು ಕರಣಂರಂತ ಪ್ರಬುದ್ಧ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರರನ್ನು ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿತು. ಐದನೇ ಭಾರಿಯೋ ಆರನೇಯ ಭಾರಿಯೋ ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವುದು. ಪ್ರತಿ ಓದಿಗೂ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಆಪ್ತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠರು ಇನ್ನೂ ಏತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಏರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

As Samskara takes a back seat. Luxury, Hedonism, and lust become human deities. Money, turmoil, and pleasure become life, but at the expense of the withering human soul is depicted in this short book clearly and crisply. Though it is just 162 pages, It took me nearly an entire day to read since it created a conflict of thoughts within me. There are two types of books, One that gives us the ecstasy and another type are those which destroy the structure of our current thought to rebuild the new empire upon the fallen ashes. This book belongs to the second category. It made me rethink, interpret and dwell deep in the idea of traditionalism and modernism. A clear depiction of the turmoil of modern human life which thrives on a belief that is not
in our control and makes us reliable on fragile circumstances is engaging.
Two ideas drive the entire story, One is ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ(devotion), and another is ನಂಬಿಕೆ (belief). Though it is a short book, the core idea about Samsakara, Hindhu dharma, the significance of rituals, family, fatherhood, and life are questioned and answered creatively. I spent more time questioning pre-existing thought processes holding my nerves than reading.

Surendra and Battaru represent two opposite ideas conveyed in the book. Surendra represents hedonistic modernity and Battaru represents traditionalist modernity.
Battaru's character left a great impact on me, firm belief in traditions borrowed by ancestors and thoughtful understanding of what he practices make him a key character of the book. His deep understanding of culture and its essence in life shaped my perception of tradition by the time I finish this book. His firm ground on ideality but openness in understanding the turmoils of life to make a broad-minded decision is admirable. On the opposite end Surendra who thinks of himself as progressive, Represents the miserable creation of hedonism and silly ideology. Being a slave to temptation, lust, and pleasure, drowning in the lonely darkness while attempting to walk in a throng-filled flower bed
of hedonism. I was thinking this book is a story that could be transformation path of Surendra, But the ending made me realize "Wretched one will never become humane, Just like anus will never become face even if you wash it 100 times".

The author's unique skill in constructing an impactful story around 15 days death ritual is creative. Friction between Urban lifestyle, hedonism, tradition, devotion, belief, loneliness, and family values is conveyed precisely with a creative touch. Must read for those questioning the significance of life after working from home.

ಇಂದಿನ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಸಮಾಜದ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ಆಯಸ್ಸು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕೃಷಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಸಿಗದೆ ಮದುವೆಗಾಗಿ ಪಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪರಿಪಾಟಲು, ಗಂಡ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಇರಬೇಕಾದ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅತಿರೇಕವಿಲ್ಲದ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಗಂಡ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯರಿಬ್ಬರು ಸಮಾನರು ಆದರೆ ಮದುವೆಯೆಂಬ ಸಂಬಂಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರಿಗೆ ಅವರದೇ ಆದ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ,ನಂಬಿಕೆ ,ಒಂದು ನೈತಿಕ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ ವಿದ್ದರೆ ಬದುಕು ಸುಗಮ ವೆನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಮಾನತೆಯ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರ ಜೀವನವೂ ಸೂತ್ರ ಕಿತ್ತ ಗಾಳಿಪಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಆಧಾರಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು ತುಂಬಾ ಬಾಲಿಶವೆನಿಸಬಹುದು , ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ತಕ್ಕಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಳೆಯಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ ಶಾಂತಿ ಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಕೆಲವು ಆಚರಣೆ ಪಾಲಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಲು, ವಾಸ್ತವನ್ನು ಅರಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಾನಸಿಕವಾಗಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ದಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿರುವುದು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಸಮಾಧಾನಕ್ಕೆ ,ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ಕುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ಮಾಡಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಜೋಯಿಸರ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ .

This is one of the finest books that I've read in recent times. It has some traces of SL Bhyrappa's Vamshavriksha and Nele novels. Still, this book gives us enough information about the subject that it deals with. The protagonists of the novel, Surendra, his Wife Neha and his younger brother Narahari was portrayed very well. Surendra's dilemma regarding following the age old practices of Hindu ritual of Samskara Karma or Funeral Practices, whether to believe it or not, whether it holds any values in the current society is remarkably well written. The well learned Venkatesh Bhatta, the head priest who takes the responsibilities of conducting the funeral ritual of Surendra's demised father Sreekantha, is one hell of a awesome character to deal with. He is serious most of the times and at the same time, he believes in what he was he doing. However, the one protagonist who we all detest throughout the novel is Neha, wife of Surendra, the cosmopolitan lady who drinks, smokes and have all the modern aspects that one can expect in this modern society.

The details regarding the funeral practices is what we can take away from the book. Its detailed description of various stages in the ritual gives us enough information and knowledge. The novel could've been extended to 30 or 40 more pages, the detailed background of Neha and her childhood could've been included. The story of Narahari, the younger brother of Surendra was kept bare minimum, should've been detailed for few more pages. I guess, the last chapter was written in a hurry, since, it concludes really quick in few pages.

Overall, a fantastic attempt by the author Karanam Pavan Prasad, his theatre background has helped him to write few amazing dialogues and quotes, which we can remember for quite sometime. A must read novel for everyone.

ಬಹಳ ದಿನಗಳ ನಂತರ ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದು, ಮುಗಿಸುವವರೆಗೂ ಬಿಡದೇ ಕಾಡಿತು. ಮೊದಲಿನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಕರ್ಮವೇ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬುಡಮೇಲಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಅತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಿದವನು ತಂದೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ ಕಲಿಸಿದವನು ತಂದೆ 🙏 ಆದರೂ ನನ್ನದು ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಆಗುವ ಸಂಕಟ ವರ್ಣನಾತೀತ. ಸರಳವಾದ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಯ್ತು.

It's kind of unique attempt by the author to address the below confusion and successfully launching a battle within oneself

1. Faith vs belief
2. Science vs Superstition
3. Intuition vs Logic
4. Tradition vs custom
5. East Vs West


And clearly convinces the reader with a concise explanation with thought process in which one can sweep over these hurdles

I was literally awestruck with the idea of the novel, which author has brought with it.

The entire plot is set in the back of malnad region which has given a magical touch to the story itself. The novel has all the essentials and ingredients and also keeps the reader hooked onto it.

The best component is that the author has done much research in explaining theories
In-relating to Shraddha with references to science, the logic, the way Surendra interprets and co-relates this karma with logic or science behind is very commendable.

This happens to be my second time read.
What forced me to read this again is my last book “ಸರ್ಪಭ್ರಮೆ”. Which had the same back story of Sanatana Final 13 day ritual after death of a person.

Karma is a riveting story of a man who has lost his father who happens to be a Vedic scholar and a great pandit cherished by his pupils and the people of the town.
Antagonist Surendra is one of the main character of this story. Who happens to be a Modern day Renegade Brahmin supposedly returning to his village in the backdrop of the Western Ghats of Chikamagaluru district of Karnataka. Story revolves around the last rituals that is conducted by the two sons of the deceased. Lots of Sanskrit Mantras have been used to describe the rituals. At the same time adultery content has been used many times it might be odd for some people and many might justify it too. Though I will say author has portrayed the main character from the modernist perspective of Brahmins well it is true to a great extent.

Every character has a role to play in the story. Most interesting character or the one I can relate too is Venkatesh Bhattaru who happens to be the long time friend of the Deceased Srikanta Jois.
As I have seen these kind of people around me who are staunchly orthodox and have a strong belief system.
I don’t want to give up too much details will spoil the read for others.

When I read it first time even I thought it had the glimpse of Vamshavruksha by S L Bhyrappa but my second time read has changed the opinions. Anyone who is interested in reading about the Sanatana rituals pertaining death this would be a good read. Also English Translation is available.

Such a beautiful book! When I had heard of the writer's name I hadn't given much thought to his books as I had a few presumptions about him. A random conversation with a good friend of mine paved the way for me to pick this book as she shared a few snaps of the pages of Nunni book she had been reading. I got more curious when I figured out that S L Bhyrappa had helped the writer to furnish this book.
Karma, I found it very distinctive work compared to the other contemporary books. Now, about my presumptions, I had always thought the writer was more of a left leaning writer and I avoid such lot and their works both for time saving and a clear cut knowledge into the history and culture without the infiltration of any sort of ideologies. Hence, I hadn't paid much attention to the author nor to his works.
The way the writer describes the samskaras with the sanskrit shlokas and their meanings so well. The book was a complete page turner, although I felt sorta bored. At some points, I found the book way to overwhelming that I had to put it down and take a few breaks from it. Might be because I am not that exposed to urbanized world that I found the lifestyle of Surendra and Neha bit hard to digest. To be honest, I found the so called 'orthodox' family somewhat opened and broad minded compared to the former. Maybe because I expected over reactions of the family at various incidents which didn't occur. Or maybe it was me who felt the family somewhat bearable compared to the other end of the living style.
Albeit Surendra is the main character, I realized it is Venkatesh Bhat a grand root of the whole novella. He stands as a firm foot representation of the samskaras that are to be followed. He exhibits as a strong character. What I really loved about him is he is a hardcore traditionalist, at the same time he's way more broad minded to accept wholeheartedly women who were subjected to the ill fated heinous crimes. He's more into the guna of the person than the genes that make a person. In that manner, I found him way more broad minded than Surendra who claimed himself to be a progressive person when he himself shrinks back refraining to be open enough to accept certain brutality against someone close! He himself exposes his inner narrowness when it comes about accepting one's guna seeking the 'genes' or pitr. This is quite contrasting because in every art form, be it literature or visual presentation it's the purohita or a traditionalist who's too narrow minded and rigid. However, this book (call me biased) took a soft corner to the so called traditional family which is something that needs to be appreciated.
About the urbanised civlisation I felt like the author tried his hard to prove his point. I wish he sorta balanced things out. It was too much for me to digest and I felt like the author kinda exaggerated some stuff in the book.
Overall, it's a great short read. The book has suspense which makes the already a short read a fast paced one. The writer has a brilliant narration. This book stands really really different compared to the other books. This book gives a different perspective and it's worth reading.
Plus, I felt like the writer did a great job showing what exactly a progressive mentality is. It's not indulging oneself in worldly pleasures more than the requirement nor is it exhibited through one's attires. It's a whole lot different thing and I found Venkatesh Bhat is the truest progressive person than what Surendra and Neha thought themselves as.

ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದಿದಾಗ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಶೈಲಿಯೇ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಎನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ ಮತ್ತು ನೆಲೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಜೋಡಣೆಯ ತರಹ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕೋನದಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೋಪವಿಲ್ಲ.

ತಂದೆಯ ಅಂತಿಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಊರಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರನ ಬಾಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದಿನ ೧೫ ದಿನ ಜರುಗುವ ಘಟನಾವಳಿಗಳನ್ನೂ, ಅಪಾರ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ವಿವಿಧ ಮಜಲುಗಳನ್ನೂ,modern ಯುಗದ ಸಂಭಂದದ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗಳನ್ನೂ ಲೇಖಕರು ಬಹಳ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ "ಕರ್ಮ" ದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೆರೆಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ, ಸ್ವತಃ ನಾಟಕರರಾದ ಕರಣಂ ಪವನ್ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಅವರು ನಾಟಕ ಲೋಕದಿಂದ ೧.೫ ವರ್ಷ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಾಗಿ ದೂರವಿದ್ದರಂತೆ ! ೨೦೧೫ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಂಡ "ಕರ್ಮ", ಇದುವರೆಗೂ ಆರು ಮುದ್ರಣ ಕಂಡು ಓದುಗರ ಮನ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದೆ. mylang ನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಡಿಯೋ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲೂ ಇದು ಲಭ್ಯವಿದೆ.

ಸಮಾಜದ ಕಟ್ಟುಪಾಡುಗಳಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ, ನವ ಯುಗದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಒಗ್ಗಿಕೊಂಡ ಕಥಾ ನಾಯಕ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ, ತಂದೆಯ ಮರಣಾನಂತರದ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲು ಮುಂದಿನ ೧೫ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟೂರಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಕಳೆಯಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.ತನ್ನ ವಿವಾಹದ ಅಭದ್ರತೆ, ಫ್ರೀ ಸೋಲ್ ನಂತಿರುವ ಮಡದಿ, ಪುರಾಣದ ಅವಲೋಕನ,೧೦ ದಿನದ ಕಾರ್ಯದ ರೀತಿ-ರಿವಾಜುಗಳು - ಹೀಗೇ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ "ಶ್ರದ್ದೆ ಹಾಗು ನಂಬಿಕೆ" ಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ತೊಳಲಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿವೆ. ನೇಹಾ - ಒಂದು ದೃಷ್ಟಕೋನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟವಳಾಗಿ ಕಂಡರೂ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ವಿಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾಜದ ಕ್ರೂರತನಕ್ಕೆ, ಲಂಪಟತನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ, ಮತ್ತೆಂದೂ ತಿರುಗಿ ಬಾರದಷ್ಟು ದೂರ ಕೊಚ್ಚಿ ಹೋದ ಅಮಾಯಕಳಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ - ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ನಿಜವೆಂದು ನಂಬಿದ ಈ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಮಾತರತೆಯ ದಾಸನಾಗಿ ಕಂಡರೂ, ಆತನ ಮನಸ್ಸು "ತನ್ನ ರಕ್ತಗುಣ ಹಾಗು ತಾನು ಬೆಳೆದ ವಾತಾವರಣ" ಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಓಲಾಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ನರಹರಿ - ಇವನೊಬ್ಬ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗ ! ತಂದೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕ ಮಗ ! ತನ್ನ "ಪಂಚೆ ಜಾರುವ" ಸಂಧರ್ಭ ಬಂದಾಗಲೂ, ಇಂದ್ರಿಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಈತನ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಗೌರವ.

ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುವಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರ ಶೈಲಿ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯ್ತು. ಕೆಲವು ಸಂಧರ್ಭಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುವಾಗ , ಅಶ್ಲೀಲ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸದೆ,ಘಟನಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವಂತೆ, ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೆರೆಹಿಡಿದ ಲೇಖಕರ ಜಾಣತನ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತದ್ದು! ತಂದೆ-ಪಿತಾಮಹ-ಪ್ರಪಿತಾಮಹ : ಇವರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಸಿಗುವ ಬಗೆಯನ್ನು, ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಲೋಕದ "First In - First Out" ಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ ಬಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯ್ತು. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ತಿರುವು, ಸುರೇಂದ್ರನ ಮನಸಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರವೆಂಬಂತೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ "ಶ್ರದ್ದೆ - ನಂಬಿಕೆ"ಯ ನಡುವೆ ತೂಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇದೊಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಓದು ಎಂಬುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ. ಗರುಡ ಪುರಾಣದ ಇಂಟರಸ್ಟಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಇದೆ. ಅಪರ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಯ ವಿವರಣೆಯಿದೆ. ರಾಶಿ ಮಂತ್ರಗಳಿವೆ !

ಧನ್ಯವಾದ, ಕರಣಂ ಪವನ್ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ ಸರ್, ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನೀಡಿದಕ್ಕೆ!

ಕಥಾನಾಯಕನ ತಂದೆಯ ಸಾವಿನ ನಂತರದ ���೫ದಿನಗಳ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಕಾರ್ಯಧ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳ ಸೂಕ್ಶ್ಮ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಕಥೆಯೇ ಈ ಕರ್ಮಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಜೀವಳ.

ಕಥಾನಾಯಕ ಹಾಗು ಅವನ ಪತ್ನಿ ನಗರಜೀವನಕೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವಾಗ ಬಂದಂತಹ ಸಾವು ಹೇಗೆ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಹಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು.

ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಸ್ಥ ಅಪ್ಪನಿಂದ ದೂರವಾದಮೇಲೆ ಆತನ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಹಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡುತಹೋದಂತೆ ಕಥಾನಾಯಕನ ಮನಸಿನಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವಂತವ ತೊಳಲಾಟ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಡೆಯಲಿ ಎದುರಾಗುವಂತಹ ಒಂದು ಸತ್ಯ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಅದ್ಭ��ತವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರೆ.

ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತಾನು ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಸ್ಥನಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಹೇಗೆ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ವಮಾನವನಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ತದನಂತರದಲ್ಲೂ ಆ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ ತನಕೊನೆಗಾಲದವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ರಹಸ್ಯಮಾಡುತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಮನೋಜ್ಞವಾಗಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದರೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಜೊಳ್ಳಿಲ್ಲ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪೇಜೂ ತೂಕದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದೆ.
ಓದಲು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಲೆಂದು ನಾನು ಸದಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಮುಖವನ್ನು ತಗಲಾಕಿಬಿಡುವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾತ್ರವರ್ಗ ತುಂಬಾ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ ಇದು ನೆರವಾಯಿತು.
ಮೂರನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ non linear play structure (ಹಾಗಂತ ಭಾವಿಸಿರುವೆ) ಪ್ರಯೋಗ ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈಗಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯ ಹಾಗು ಹಿಂದಿನವರ ನಡುವಿನ ಶೀತಲ ಸಮರ ಧರ್ಮದ, ನಿತ್ಯಕರ್ಮದ ಆಚರಣೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರುವ ಗೊಂದಲ, ತಾತ್ಸಾರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಗಿನ ನಮ್ಮವರ ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಹಿರಿಯರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೌಣವಾಗಿರುವ ಗೌರವ, ತನಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಬದುಕುವ ಚಟ, ತನ್ನ ಚಟ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಗು ತನ್ನ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರಿಗೆ ಆಗುವ ನಷ್ಟವೇನು ಎನ್ನುವ ಉಡಾಫೆ.ನೀವು ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಲಿವ್ಇನ್ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಹಾಗು ವೈಫ್ ಸ್ವಾಪಿಂಗ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಹಾಗು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಸಿಗೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಹಾಗು ಶ್ರದ್ದೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತವೆ, ಹೌದು ನಮ್ಮ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಆಚಾರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊಂದಲ,ಕೀಳರಿಮೆ,ಉಡಾಫೆ ಮನೋಭಾವ ಬೆಳೆಯಲು ಕಾರಣಗಳು ನೂರಾರಿವೆ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೌಕಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ವಿಂಗಡಣೆ ಮಾಡದೆ ಅಭ್ಯಯಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಷಕರು ಕೆಲಸಗಳಿಸುವ, ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಂಪಾದನೆ ಮಾಡುವ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಚಿಕ್ಕವಯಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಅಭ್ಯಯಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಚೋದಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಆಚಾರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೌರವ ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸೂರಿಯ ಹಾಗೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಹೀನರಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
ಇನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಪಾತ್ರಧಾರಿ ನೇಹಾ ಅನಾಚರ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಕಳಶವಿದ್ದಂತೆ, ಹೆತ್ತ ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿಗಳು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪಾಲನೆ ಪೋಷಣೆ ಹಾಗು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಕೊಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯು ಗೌರವ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲಯೆಂದು ನೇಹಳನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದೀರ.
ಯಾವುದೆ ವಿಚಾರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬರೆಯಬೇಕು ಅಂದರೆ ಪೂರ್ವ ತಯಾರಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ( ನಾನು ಭೈರಪ್ಪ, ಚಿದಾನಂದ ಮೂರ್ತಿ, ರವಿ ಬೆಳೆಗೆರೆ, ಪ್ರತಾಪ ಸಿಂಹ ಹಾಗು ಡ್ಯಾನ್ ಬ್ರೌನ್ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಯಾಗಿ) ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ತುಂಬಾ ತೂಕ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದೆ.
ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಬಂದ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯಿಂದ ಅಮ್ಮ ಮರುಕ್ಷಣದಿಂದಲೇ ಓದಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಹಾಗು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃಷಿ ಹಾಗು ನಾಟಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹಾರೈಸುತ್ತೇನೆ

"...ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠರು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಅವರಂತೆಯೇ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ನಿನ್ನ ಗುಣದಿಂದ ನೀನು ಬೇರೆಯವನಾದೆ, ಅವರು ಬೇರೆ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ...", ಭಟ್ಟರ ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಹಲವು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನು ದೊರಕಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿ ರೀವಾಜುಗಳಿಗೂ ವೈಜ್ನಾನಿಕ ತಳಹದಿಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವುದಾಗಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ವಿಜ್ನಾನದ ಬಣ್ಣ ಲೇಪಿಸುವುದಾಗಲೀ ಸಮಂಜಸವಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮನದಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಜಯಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಲಾರದೇನೊ.

If you are a SLB fan, you will find it that the storytelling is same.. And the story here reminds or have similar story of 2 SLB sir books, that the author himself has said.. But, it was awesome read.. gripping..

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಹೆಸರು ಮತ್ತು ಮುಖಪುಟ ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಬಹುಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ 'ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ'ವನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ತರುತ್ತವೆ. ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಪ್ರತಿಯನ್ನು ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಓದಿ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿರುವ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಕಥೆಯ ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತ ಪರಿಚಯವನ್ನು ಹೀಗೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ತಂದೆಯ ಸಾವಿನ ನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ನಗರ ಸಮಾಜದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಹದಿನೈದು ದಿನಗಳ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಹೊಳಹುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯ ತೊಳಲಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹೊಳಹುಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೆ ಆತನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗುವ ಸ್ಥಿತ್ಯಂತರದ ಯಾನವೇ 'ಕರ್ಮ'.

'ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಲೋಕ ನಿಂತ ನೀರಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಬ್ಬರು ಹಲುಬಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಲು ಮನಸ್ಸಾಯಿತು' ಎಂದೂ ಲೇಖಕರು ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮೂಡಿಸಿದವು.

ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ನನ್ನ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದುವಾಗಲೂ ಇನ್ನೊಂದೇ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡುವ ಅನುಭವ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂತಹದೊಂದು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ಲೇಖಕ ಅಥವಾ ಲೇಖಕಿ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊರನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕೂ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಇರುವ ದ್ವಂದ್ವಗಳನ್ನು ಶೋಧಿಸುವುದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. 'ಕರ್ಮ'ದ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿರುವವರು ನಗರದವರಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಆರಂಭದಿಂದಲೇ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ವಿವರಗಳು ಪರಿಚಿತವಾದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳೆನಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಏಕರೂಪಿ ನಾಗರಿಕತೆಯು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟತೆಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಬುಡಮೇಲು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ತಂದು ಹೇರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಜೀವನಕ್ರಮ ನಗರದ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಜನರ ಜೀವನ ಕ್ರಮ ಆಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ವಿವರಗಳು ಬಹುಶಃ ಬಹಳ ಮಂದಿ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಆತನ ಅಂತರ್ಜಾತೀಯ ವಧು ನೇಹಾ ಇವರ ದೈನಿಕ ಜೀವನದ ವಿವರಗಳು ಸಹ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರಂತಹ ನುರಿತ ಲೇಖಕರಿಂದ "ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವಲಯದ ಮುಂದುವರೆದ ಜೀವನ ಪಧ್ಧತಿ ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕಥನ ಉತ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರತಾಗಿದೆ" ಎಂದು ಹೊಗಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಯೂ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗಿದೆ.

ಇಂತಹ ನಗರಸಮಾಜದ ಜೀವನಕ್ರಮದವರು ತಾವು ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಂದಿರುವ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲದ ದೇಸೀ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯೊಡನೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿಯಾಗುವಾಗ ಉಂಟಾಗುವ ತಾಕಲಾಟವೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ವಸ್ತು. ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಸಾವಿನ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟೂರಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುವ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ ಅನುಭವಿಸುವ ಪರಕೀಯತೆ, ಗೊಂದಲ, ತೊಳಲಾಟ, ಸ್ಥಿತ್ಯಂತರ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳ ವಿವರ ಸಾವಿನ ನಂತರದ ಶ್ರಾಧ್ಧ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳ ವಿವರಗಳ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿವೆ.

ಕರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಓದುವಾಗ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಓದಿದ್ದ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಬಂದವು. ಒಂದು, ಯು. ಆರ್. ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ಬ��ೆದ 'ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ'. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು, ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಬರೆದ 'ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯು ನೀನಾದೆ ಮಗನೆ'.

'ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಬಹಳ ವರ್ಷಗಳೇ ಆಗಿದ್ದರೂ (ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ ಅದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿ ಅಭಿನಯಿಸಿರುವ ಇದೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಆಧಾರಿತ ಚಲನ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ನೋಡಿದೆ) ನನಗೆ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ನೆನಪಿರುವುದೆಂದರೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಪಾತ್ರಧಾರಿ ಪ್ರಾಣೇಶಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಧರ್ಮ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬರುವ ತಲ್ಲಣದ ಚಿತ್ರಣ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣೇ���ಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ತಾವು ನಂಬುವ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕೂ ಮತ್ತು ತಮಗೂ ಇರುವ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಸಮಾಜದ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಧಾರವಾಗುವುದು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಪರಿವೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಇತರರು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವ ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮುಖದ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

ಇನ್ನು ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ 'ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯು ನೀನಾದೆ ಮಗನೆ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದೇಶಿ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಹಿಲ್ಡ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅರ್ಚಕ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ಇವರಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋವಿನ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಪರಸ್ಪರರಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿರುಧ್ಧದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ವಾಗ್ಯುದ್ಧವೇ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ಪಾಶ್ಚಾತ್ಯ ಜೀವನಕ್ರಮ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಶ್ರಧ್ಧೆ, ಜೀವನಧ್ಯೇಯ ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರಧ್ಧೆ, ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವಂತೆ ಹಿಂದೆ ಗೋಹತ್ಯೆಗೆ ಮುಂದಾಗಿದ್ದ ಹಿಲ್ಡಳಿಗೆ ಆವಳ ತಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯೇನೋ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಆಕೆಯ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ಹಸುವಿನ ಕೆಚ್ಚಲಿನ ಹಾಲೇ ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

'ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ರೂಢಿಗತ ಪಧ್ಧತಿಯ ಕಠೋರತೆ, ಧರ್ಮದ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಗೋಸುಂಬೆತನದ ವರ್ತನೆಗಳು ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೊಸದೊಂದು ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯತ್ತ ಬೆರಳು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ, 'ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯು ನೀನಾದೆ ಮಗನೆ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ಪೂರ್ವ-ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಗಳ ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಜೀವನ ಕ್ರಮ, ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬಾ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾದರೂ ಭಿನ್ನವಾದೊಂದು ಚಿಂತನೆಯ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನೇ ಅಸಾಧುವೆನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಶ್ರಧ್ಧೆಯ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಟತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾತೀತಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

'ಕರ್ಮ' ಸಹ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಮಾಜದ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಢಿಗತ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ, ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುವ, ಹೊಸತು-ಹಳತರ ಘರ್ಷಣೆಯ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರುತ್ತಲೇ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ "ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಚಂಚಲ, ಶ್ರಧ್ಧೆ ಅಚಲ" ಎಂಬ ಯಥಾಸ್ಥಿತಿ ವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ದುರ್ಬಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ, ಕೇವಲ ಹಣಗಳಿಕೆಯಷ್ಟೇ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿರುವ, ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಒಂದು ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ತಿರುವಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ತಂದೆಯ ಪಾಪದ ಸಂತಾನವೆಂದು ಸಿಧ್ಧಪಡಿಸುವುದಂತೂ ತೀರಾ ಅನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ. ಆಧುನಿಕ ನಗರವಾಸಿ ಯುವಜನರು ಮತ್ತವರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಆರ್ಥಿಕ, ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಪಲ್ಲಟಗಳನ್ನು ದಟ್ಟ ವಿವರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಆಕರ್ಷಕವಾಗಿ, ಕುತೂಹಲಕರವಾಗಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗುವ ಕೃತಿಯ ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದ ವೈದೃಶ್ಯಗಳ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ವೈಚಾರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಎದುರಿಸದೆ ಜಾತಿ, ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರ ಎಂಬ ಅವೇ ಹಳೇ ಸವಕಲು ವಿವರಣೆಗಳ ಮೊರೆ ಹೋಗಿರುವುದು ನಿರಾಸೆ ಮೂಡಿಸಿತು.

ಈಚೆಗೆ ಓದಿದ ದೇವನೂರು ಮಹಾದೇವರ 'ಎದೆಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಅಕ್ಷರ' ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ 'ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ ಅಂತಾರಲ್ಲ - ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಯೆ' ಎಂಬ ಲೇಖನದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ಸಾಲು ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ- "...ಜನ್ಮ, ಕರ್ಮ, ವರ್ಣ, ಜಾತಿಕಟ್ಟುಪಾಡು, ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರೂ ಅದರೊಳಗೂ ಪಾರಮಾರ್ಥಿಕ ಸತ್ಯ, ಲೌಕಿಕ ಸತ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಇಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಒಡಲು ಪಡೆದ ಕೃತಿಗಳೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಸಮಾಜದ ಛಿದ್ರತೆಗೆ ಇವುಗಳ ಕಾಣಿಕೆಯೂ ಇದೆ."

'ಕರ್ಮ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರತಾಗಬಹುದಿತ್ತು. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ 'ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಲೋಕ ನಿಂತ ನೀರಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಬ್ಬರು ಹಲುಬಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಲು ಮನಸು ಮಾಡಿದ' ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ಬರಹಗಾರ ಶ್ರಧ್ಧೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳ ವಿಚಾರವನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಬಂಧದಲ್ಲೇ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ವಿಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಚ್ಚಬಹುದಿತ್ತೇನೋ. "ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾ ಭಂಗವಾದರೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಉಳಿಯಲ್ಲ" ಎಂಬ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಭಟ್ಟರ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರವಾಗಿ "ಆಯಿತು, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಏನು ಎಂಬುದರ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಆಗಬೇಕು" ಎಂಬ ಅವರ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮನ ಮಾತು (ಪು. ೧೦೬-೧೦೭) ಇಂತಹದೊಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆಯ ಸುಳಿವು ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. "ವೈದಿಕದ ಜತೆಗೇ ಜಾತ್ಯತೀತತೆ, ಸಮಾನತೆ, ಪ್ರಗತಿಪರತೆಗಳೂ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯ ಭಾಗಗಳಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದು" ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮ ಹೇಳಬಹುದಿತ್ತೇನೋ. ಆತ ಹಾಗೇನಾದರೂ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಕರ್ಮ'ದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ' ಯ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

The book is well written and keeps you hooked throughout. Even though it's a small read, the content of book seemed heavy on the heart. Book deeply and in detail decodes the 13days of final karma rites that is performed by eldest son and the need of it for the bereavement process for the family that goes through it. Seeing Funeral practices in my own family, I was able to closely relate almost everything that's written in the book. It was the mirror to the current society, modernism, generational gaps and beautifully explains the fine line between belief and devotion.

This is the first Kannada book I read. I am absolutely mind blown. The book deals with so many aspects that display the conflict the modern young mind has with respect to moral and spiritual questions of life. Never in my life I felt the book answering my own introspective questions on rituals and traditions. The character arc, the detailed description of each ritual, the internal conflict, the external environment and the subtle nuances of traditional social setting are so mesmerizing that they captivate and involve you throughout the plot progression. The story might be surrounding around a death ritual but the observation of socio-cultural undertones is what brings life into this book. I highly recommend this to every young man who can read Kannada.

Written in detail with a lot of attention paid to the way a person's mindset can be molded through the way the last rites of a human being are performed, this book raises many fundamental questions about our own rituals and practices. Bhyrappas influence can be clearly felt in the style of writing. There is some graphical description of the sexual desires felt by the characters which I thought was not necessary to the plot at all.

There is no overpowering protagonist or antagonist. There is only the next door neighbour, the simpleton from the village, the common software engineer living in the city and the rustic home of the village. It sticks. And it hovers in memory so much that you might think it's haunting you.

A good read. You may think of it when in a mood to philosophize and contemplate at leisure the essence of our hindu culture.

One Of the Best book i read in 2019 . I recommend all the modern generation people must read this book once.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆ ತೀರಿ ಹೋದಾಗ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಮರಳಿ ಪಿತೃ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಂಡು ಮುಂದಿನ 14 ದಿನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿತೃಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮನೆಯವರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಸಂಗತಿ ಇದರ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು.
ಆದರೆ ಹಾದರ,ಕಾಮದ ಕಥಾಹಂದರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆಯಲು ಅಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಎಂಬುದು ನನಗನಿಸುವುದು. ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಹಾದರವು ಅತಿರೇಕಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವುದು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಡಾನ್ಸ್, ಫೈಟ್, ಹಸಿ ಬಿಸಿ ದೃಶವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ಓಡಲು ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಫಾರ್ಮುಲಾ ಬಳಸಿದಂತೆ ಇಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಕರ್ತೃಗಳ ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಇದ್ದಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ‌.
ಹಾದರದ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಕತೆಗಳು ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಲ್ಲಾ ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಕತೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಈ ತರ��� ಉಪಕತೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಾರಾಟವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯೇನಾದರು ಕೆಲವು ಲೇಖಕರುಗಳ ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿದೆಯೇ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ.
