Warden #3

Attack of the Aswang

Rate this book
Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.

For most of his life, 16-year-old Errol Magnus categorically rejected the idea of being a Warden. Growing up right next to the Badlands, he encountered enough bloodthirsty monsters in the ordinary course of events; he’d never seen much sense in assuming a post that required you to actively seek them out.

Recently, however, while competently and capably serving as Warden on behalf of his missing brother Tom, Errol’s had a change of heart. Now, for reasons of his own, he desperately wants the position. Unfortunately, being officially appointed Warden not only requires that Errol’s skills be tested by his peers, but that he also make a perilous journey to the city of Apolos in order to be examined by the High Warden himself.

Traveling with a group of colleagues, Errol thinks all danger is behind them once they reach the safety of the city. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Something has followed them out of the Badlands, and - one by one - his traveling companions are being viciously slain by something... inhuman. It’s up to Errol to find the creature and bring its killing spree to a halt, before he himself winds up the next victim.

Attack of the Aswang
(Warden #3)
by Kevin Hardman
Narrated by: Mikael Naramore
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I really love this series so far! This young guy has been doing warden work because his brother has gone missing and he is the warden. A warden is someone that keeps the monsters at bay. He works the badlands where only the strongest of people live and all kinds of monsters try to cross into human territory. He lives with a small magical being named Berry. In this book, the main wardens come to test him to see if he is ready to be a warden. Then they take him to the city, a bit of a trek on horses. A lot of things happen there! A big surprise at the end! Great characters and world building! New characters! Loved the action and creatures!
Narration was awesome!!!

A Fun Adventure into a New World

Attack of the Aswang was a fun new adventure into a series I hadn't read before. I typically don't start a new series in the middle (book 3 in this case), but I'm happy to say it was very easy to jump in and not feel like I was missing information. Credit to the author for making it easy to jump in and get up to speed quickly.

The Warden series was a lot of fun to get to know in this book. There's a world that is a little different from ours with magic and magical creatures. I love the world that Kevin Hardman has built and really loved getting to know new creatures that I feel like I haven't seen in every other fantasy book.

Errol is a great main character. He's grounded and likeable. He could easily be arrogant or full of himself as he's basically the magical sheriff in town, but he's not. I also like that his first instinct isn't to kill magical creatures, but to only do so when necessary and to thoroughly investigate a situation. There's some other great secondary characters in Attack of the Aswang and some who are supposed to be not so likeable. The author does a great job with each of them. There's also a bigger mystery in this series that I'm looking forward to learning more about.

Being my first time diving into a Kevin Hardman book, I wasn't sure what to expect of this new world, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not an action-packed blockbuster book, but there's enough to be satisfying on top of the great world-building going on. I'm definitely intrigued and will be checking out the rest of the Warden series. If you like magical stories, magical creatures, or sheriff-type stories that aren't set in the old west, you might really like this series as well.

The narration by Mikael Naramore was spot-on if you're interested in checking it out. I thought he did an excellent job of playing the different characters and has a good voice for audiobooks. No complaints at all.

*I was provided a free copy of this book, but my thoughts and opinions are my own and honest.

Wow!!!! I really enjoyed this book. The author has a great imagination and it comes across so well in his writing, so much so that you know that what every weird and wonderful creature he writes about you are going to enjoy. The main character helps with the plot to, as he is so likeable and combine that with a world class narrator and you have one excellent book. Just wish it was longer.
16 year Errol is acting warden while his brother is missing and three of his peers need to put his skills to the test. But fighting monsters and keeping his village safe is not enough and he must travel through the bad lands, where the monsters live. It seems news of his previous conquests (I highly recommend both previous books) has got back to head quarters and the higher ups want to see him for themselves. On the way the travellers make a big mistake that follows them to the big city, where it seems that not even head quarters is safe from monsters and bodies start to pile up.
The narrator is one of my favourite readers and I would get the book just because I know he will do an excellent job with the story-good job the story is excellent too.

In this third book in the series, the headline monster is probably less important than the world-building that vastly expands the reader's knowledge of the wider society of wardens including a number of new characters that seem likely to return in future books and the introduction of a new arc that indicates that there is something special about Errol, who has also now realised that he likes being a warden and living where he does too.

The narrator's performance is a good one that nicely enhances the overall book with a clear and distinctive tone that helps to bring the characters to life even more.

Overall, another enjoyable book in this series that also sets things up nicely for future books too.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook for this Title. I find the narrator adds that extra wham to an already awesome story.

We find Errol doing he does best, protecting the people and creatures of his adopted ward, with his innate ability of understanding and sensitivity, to the why and wherewithal of the actions of both the people, but also, those that are considered monsters, by those that had not considered the reasons for some actions of these creatures, and the purpose or reasons for those actions.
In two separate situations, in this episode, we see a creature, reacting to the threat to its offspring. Errol, acting with his normal care and consideration, identified the creatures needs and helped fulfill them.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, and found it very entertaining. Finally Errol gets to go to the city. And learn quickly that all is not what it seems. Life is not perfect like he thought it would be and there are in fact monster there also. After several adventures and being tested, he is more than ready to go home. But he has to stay as his travelling companion start to die. Its fast pacing and interesting characters makes it a great listen. But it has a sneaky ending. Looking forward to the next one.

Errol never particularly wanted the job of Warden, but luckily his brother trained him well before he went missing. Now that his abilities are about to be tested, he realises he really does want to keep his position. During his encounters with the creatures of the Badlands, Errol is starting to see that they can be more than just mindless killing machines.
I was glad that this book was a little longer than the others. I don't want to give any spoilers but I can't believe that ending!

I am super disappointed that I have to wait for the next installment! I was really getting into these stories, they're a bit addicting! I love the main character, the unique story lines and the great writing! This 3rd book was better than the 2nd and as good as the first. I highly recommend this series!

Attack of the Aswang is another cool book in the Warden series. The story is entertaining with interesting characters, unique monsters, and lots of action. This book is part of a series, but also works as a standalone.

Recommended for teens and above. May be too violent and scary for younger readers/ listeners.

The narrator for the audiobook is very good.

My review is based on the audiobook. This series is captivating - each book from start to finish. The characters are well written, the creatures that are encountered are not your normal shapeshifters or vampires - I love all of it. The narrator does an amazing job bringing the story & characters to life.

Interesting read. The Wardens are monster-hunters, "Part lawman, part tracker and part magician." When his brother Tom disappears, Errol Magnus decides to do whatever it takes become a Warden. Join Errol on his journey to becoming a Warden, as his skills are put to the test, against peers and monsters like, in Attack of the Aswang, and prepare for a surprise ending.

This series gets better and better, and a new volume out!!! I'm so excited to see this series growing. I thought this book was going to be the last, which is why I held off reading, but seeing the new one gave me the push I needed. It's great! Seriously a need to read series if your into supernatural creatures and mysteries.

In the continued absence of his brother, Errol is evaluated or the position of a Warden. Battles with monsters, intrigue and a trip to the big city ensue.
This one was every bit as much fun as the previous Warden books and I loved it.

Attack of the Aswang (Warden, #3), my sixteenth read from author Kevin Hardman. Well-written fantasy, with well-developed characters and story-line. With each book Hardman writes the story-line gets more enticing, drawing the reader deeper & deeper. Narrator Mikael Naramore’s talented narration again adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Review:

Story: This story follows Errol and his trials to become an official warden. His brother has been missing long enough to be presumed dead. I must warn that this book ends on a major cliffhanger. I did notice that book four was just released a couple of days ago. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get it read as soon as possible. I had it in my head that the book was the final book when I first read it because it had been quite a bit of years since it was published. You have no idea how happy I was to find that I was wrong.

Characters: I really love watching the adventures Errol goes through. There are times where I would like to smack him, but I have that with most characters I really enjoy.

Critiques: None

Narration: I really loved the narration. It pulled me into the story more than I already was.

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book very much. I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series. I’m so looking forward to reading the fourth book that was just released. It’s not available in audiobook yet. The moment it is, I’m going to grab it and listen to it. Even if I’ve already read it before then.

Errol is back at it and is now being tested for the Wardens job, but because of the stories told about him and what he has done he is to be brought to Apolos and to be questioned by the high warden himself. But after taking a side trip into the badlands the traveling group thought all the bad stuff was left there but the group could not be more wrong. But now its up to Errol to figure out how to fix this before it kills him.

This book was just as action packed and suspenseful as the others, I didn't think Errol was going to make it this time. I also like Errol's girlfriend she won't stop at anything to do what she wants to do, when she whats to do it, I am not sure who is stronger her or Errol. The characters are well thought out and work so well together. The story is awesome and I had the audio where the author and narrator work so well together to make this a wonderful audio. Mikael Naramore is a great narrator that brings this book to life and draws you into it as though you are there a part of their world. These books are so much fun I hope there are more to come.

Some well timed humour moments making this a great tale to listen too ,even if the story plot and ending was a little obvious.
We find out a bit more about the wendigo dagger and our wardens fame, and its meaning along with meeting some well constructed characters.
Very enjoyable listen and a quality narration.

Another WINNER!

I really enjoy his imagination and writing. He can create an entire world subtly without a tedious explanation as few writers can do. I want more!
