Wilfrid Lupano is a French comics writer. Born in Nantes, he spent most of his childhood in Pau. Growing up, he buried himself in his parents’ comics-book collection, and his wild imagination and interest in writing stems from a love of role-playing games.
As a young adult Lupano worked as a server to finance his studies in philosophy and English. With his friends and creative partners, Roland Pignault and Fred Campoy, he created the humorous western Little Big Joe, among other works.
After his wife passes away, Antoine discovers that she once had an affair with his sworn enemy, the factory owner he spent his whole life campaigning against for workers’ rights. Grabbing his gun, he sets off in his car on a final road trip to kill him and get a cuckold’s belated revenge – but not if his two besties and pregnant granddaughter can stop him first!
For a comic about coffin-dodgers, The Old Geezers is a lively affair, especially visually! I absolutely adored Paul Cauuet’s artwork which is nothing short of spectacular and is by far the best thing about this book. I don’t know what it is about French comics but they, seemingly more than any other country, perfectly capture human expression so viscerally.
The landscapes are stunningly rendered, the colours are amazing and Cauuet makes some inspired scene-setting choices. For example, the storytelling instinct is to focus on who’s speaking but often he’ll put those characters in the background to showcase what’s happening around them and provide the reader with a strong sense of place, context and atmosphere. It’s brilliant!
Wilfrid Lupano’s script skilfully balances a variety of tones throughout. It’s moving but not grim, sweetly nostalgic but not melancholy, and the book has an appealingly light comedic quality to it throughout. The characters are also very likeable and their friendship was believable. And I really enjoyed Sophie, the preggo granddaughter, going off on the old folks for fucking up the world for her and her kid’s futures - right on, Sophie! “Greatest Generation” my ass!
It’s not the most original story – I can’t put my finger on similar books but I do remember reading stories centred around old affairs being dredged up after a death – nor is it that gripping, but there’s still a lot to enjoy here. The first volume of The Old Geezers is a gorgeously illustrated and entertaining read that’s won me over so that I’ll be back for the next book - recommended!
Foncez.
The Old Geezers Vol. 1 is fantastic. The three elderly men are so full spunk and vitality. And let us not forget the vivacious and very much pregnant granddaughter that is along for the ride. At least for the first half anyway lol.
These men take on old age and kick its butt. They reminisce about the old days, go on adventures to different countries, are very much involved with the new addition, a beautiful baby girl, and continue to look out for each other through the good and the bad.
Very, very much recommended! Big thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and Wilfrid Lupano for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Srećom to ovde nije slučaj.
A protagonisti ovog stripa to svakako nisu! Sjajan uvod u serijal, predivan crtež koji prati odličnu priču!
I'm a huge fan of Franco-Belgian comics which are called Bande Dessinées. I've wanted to read this Bande Dessinée called 'The Old Geezers' ('Les Vieux Fourneaux') for a while. I read the first part of this series today.
Three old friends meet. The occasion is sad because the wife of one of them has just passed. They catch up and reminisce about old times and the grown-up pregnant granddaughter of the grieving husband also joins in the conversation. The departed wife has left behind a letter which contains a secret. The husband is livid with anger after he reads it and takes a gun and rushes away somewhere. The other two friends and the granddaughter follow to prevent him from doing something bad. What follows is an amazing story of friendship, a commentary on today's world, some cool banter, many hilarious scenes. I laughed through most of the book. The three old geezers have a devil-may-care attitude and are hilarious and adorable. The granddaughter is a kick-ass person, and one scene in which she offers her thoughts on the current situation in the world is amazing and inspiring to read. It was one of my favourite scenes in the book.
I loved this first part of 'The Old Geezers'. It is definitely one of my favourite comics discoveries this year. Can't wait to read the next part. Am sharing the first few pages so that you can get a feel for the story and the artwork. Swipe to see.
Have you read 'The Old Geezers'? What do you think about it?
I received this ebook free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I 100% requested this book for the cover and the fact that is a comic about old men.
I am 100% pleased with my choice and loved this read. In fact, I believe I need to read more!
This is a short read, it took me no time at all to read through it. Mostly because I wanted to know what was going to happen next! This story follows 3 old men and a pregnant woman. The opening of the story is a funeral of one of the character's wives. Upon getting some..disappointing (to say the least!) news, he gets in his car with a gun to settle some newly unresolved feelings. His two friends and his pregnant grand daughter are fast on the trail to stop this old man from ruining what is left of his life.
The story is great. These old men are fantastic. The grand daughter is perfect.
I read the German translation, which is kind of sad, since my French should be good enough for the original. But this is the version we have at the library, where my coworker introduced me to the series.
It was an instant coup de foudre! This is exactly the kind of French Bande Dessinée that I fell in love with nearly 30 years ago. I used to read and collect them, and then life happened and I got out of touch with what was on in BD land. But apparently good things happened, and it makes me eager to find more treasures like this series.
Wow about the story, the characters and the art. It is all so alive, so REAL. And super funny. And poignant (I stole that word from you, Trish).
My only critical thought is that those guys look so much older than 77. But then again they are French. It might be all that wine, and the smoking ;-) And they were working class, not management. So that might explain it.
To give you an image of how good and how funny this BD is: when I brought the first volume home both my husband and my teenage son tried to steal it from me. And especially my husband could not stop laughing while reading it. You know, the real laughter, the one with tears.
I wasn't sure what I was going to think of this, but once I really got into it, I fell in love. Three older men reunite at a funeral, make some unexpected discoveries, and hijinks ensue. It's definitely got the feeling of a French film; there's a realistic and dark sense of humor sprinkled throughout, and I am absolutely impatient to see what happens in the next volume!
I received this Ebook from NetGalley for my honest opinions.
Although I do not read comics and this is one of the few I've finished, I still give it a 4/5 stars for the story and illustrations.
The Old Geezers : Alive and Still Kicking is a comic. About. Old Geezers lol. This was pure magic. So funny. I LOVE and adore all seniors. They say what they want and don't GAF about the feelings of others most times.
But the story begins with Pierrot, who is ex military, going to get Milsey, a tattooed hairy fat ex Navy vet, ready for the funeral of a old friend. They are late for the cremation ceremony and makes it to the reception late as well. The couple reminisce a little about the dearly departed friend, as well as see the pregnant grand daughter of Antoine. They meet up with Antoine, a grumpy old union activist outside. And he starts talking.
Later on he mentions that Lucette left him a letter in another town and invited his 2 friends. They declined.
The next day, Antoine comes back home and get his shotgun and goes off in a fury. He just learned his darling wife has cheated on him (back in 62) with a billionaire whom they both was working for. He is set for revenge. HE IS GOING TO GET HIS REVENGE!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
So Pierrot, Milsey and Sophie has to go stop him of course. But Sophie is 7 months pregnant and they have to travel 9 hrs to Italy. ROAD TRIP!!!
Antoine arrives at the retirement home and realizes that the billionaire is senile and is suffering from dementia/ Alzheimer. He can not go through with this.
The threesome arrives at the retirement home and help the old man see "Lucette" one more time (Sophie looks like her). Towards the end when they get ready to leave, Sophie goes to find him. He is in the house and presents her with a way for her to restart her grandmother puppet theater business again and to help support her baby. This was a beautiful comic.
» Bonne lecture !
This is an interesting way to tell a story, with old protagonists involved, as well as one very pregnant grandchild, trying to find the mystery of stolen gold, and a love affair, as they travel from France to Italy.
And guess what? Not too much gratuitous female nudity for once, from a European comic book writer. (I mean there are a few scenes where we see a nude back, and some of the women have some tight clothes, but not bad).
And we are left with a mystery, at the end, to be resolved, I take, in the future translations of this book.
Thanks to NetGalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Very well done graphic novel and I look forward to reading the others in the series. I was not sure what to expect with this cover and title but the depth of the story and the mix of characters and stories across generations made this a story that tugged at heartstrings, made me think reflectively on personal experiences, and, ultimately, I couldn't put down until I finished it.
