كيف يدمر الأثرياء الكوكب
هل نحن فى حاجة إلى تنبيه القراء المصريين والعرب بالمخاطر التى تمثلها أزمة البيئة؟ فيما يبدو لا، فهم واعون بما يدور حولهم من مؤتمرات دولية تنشغل بها وسائل الإعلام؛ غير أن مفهوم الوعى من الناحية المعرفية يتضمن الوقوف على الأسباب وتحمل المسئولية وتعديل السلوك، ومن هذا المنظور نجد أن وعينا بقضايا البيئة يشوبه الكثير من أوجه القصور. والكتاب فى النهاية دعوة موجهة لقوى اليسار لبلورة استراتيجية جديدة بدلاً من الاكتفاء بتقديم إدارة مختلفة للنظام الرأسمالى

سأضيفه إلى العدد اللانهائي من الكتب التي قرأتها مؤخرًا وربما سأقوم بقرأتها ولا أستطيع إيجاد متسع من الوقت لكتابة مراجعة قيمة عنها

تضغط الشريحة الاعلى في المجتمع على الاستهلاك..بسبب محاوله كل طبقه اجتماعية في تقليد الطبقه الاعلى منها في الاستهلاك المادي وهذا الاستهلاك يمارس ضغطا مفرطا على البيئة..وان الطبيعه لم تعد لديها القدرة على تجديد نفسها او انتاج موارد جديده بسبب عدم قدرتها على منافسه الاستهلاك الجامح.
ان هذه الطبقه او كما يسميها المؤلف التخمه تقف في مواجهه التغييرات الجزرية التي يجب القيام بها من اجل منع تفاقم الوضح الحالي وذلك بالسيطرة على السلطة الاقتصادية والسياسية التي تسمح بالابقاء على هذا التفاوت بين الطبقات
ولكي تهرب من المساءله ترى من اجل حل هذه لاازمة الاجتماعية هو تنمية الانتاج للقضاء على الفقر والبطاله دون الحاجه لاى تعديل لاليات توزيع الثروة بما يضغط مرة اخرى على الطبيعه ولعدم وجود تلك الاليات يزيد التفاوت مرة اخرى ويزيد الاستهلاك المادي الضاغط على موارد الطبيعه الميدد لها.
كا يؤكد المؤلف انه ليس ضد فكرة التنمميه في حد ذاتها اذا كانت قائمه على تكنولوجيا جديده او اختراعات جديده ولكنه ضد التنميه القائمه على استنزاف البيئة والطبيعه
يستعرض المؤلف العديد من الامثله لتدهور البيئة بسبب الاستهلاك الجامح باالاضافه للتداعيات المستقبلية لتلك الازمة
كما يستعرض تدهور الديقراطية وتوحش الراسمالية بضرب العديد من الامثله التي تخص توحش جهاز الشرطه وقوانين وتشريعات تسيطر على الحريات الشخصيه والمراقيه بالاضافه لسيطرة النخب على الاعلام .

كيف يستطيع، الأثرياء، من برجهم العاجي، النظر للأسفل؟ حيث يعيش الفقراء، مثقلين بأعباء التلوث البيئي واستنجادات الطبيعة. كيف يستطيع شخصٌ يركب سيارته الفارهة بعد النزول من قصره، أن يشعر بارتفاع درجة الحرارة إثر الاحتباس الحراري؟ وكيف يستطيع شخصٌ آخر، لا يعيش إلا في عزلته محفوفًا بالرفاهية، أن يعرف عن كل النداءات التي يطلقها الكوكب طلبًا للنجدة؟
يقول المترجم في البداية، أن وعينا بقضايا البيئة يشوبه الكثير من أوجه القصور، أولها: الميل لاتهام البشر جميعًا دون تخصيص وتحديد للمسؤوليات. ثانيًا؛ الاعتقاد بأن حلول الأزمة البيئية ليست بأيدينا بل بأيدي العلماء والخبراء. ثالثًا: الإعجاب بمظاهر الترف وحياة الرفاهية، لذا وعلى الرغم من وعينا بالأزمة البيئية فنحن لا نود التخلي عن هذه المظاهر.
ويقول الكاتب في مقدمته: "إن الترف الذي تعيش فيه المجتمعات الغربية لا ينبغي أن يخفي علينا فداحة اللحظة، فنحن ندخل زمن الأزمة الدائمة والكوارث الممكنة."
الكتاب جيّد، ممتع ومخيف ومثير للذعر في الوقت ذاته، هناك بعض الأجزاء لم أفهمها جيدًا لجهلي بالمصطلحات الاقتصادية ولهذا أنوي العودة لقراءته في وقتٍ لاحق.
في النهاية، كما يقول الكاتب: "فكر كوكبيًا، وتحرك محليًا."

Livre intéréssant où l'auteur prend clairement une position dans une époque sans grands idéaux.
Je partage beaucoup de la vision du livre même si j'ai une appréciation métigée de son contenu.
Pour résumer : ce livre est une critique directe et franche de la classe riche et du capitalisme, avec peu d'optimisme, et une recherche quasi inexitante de solutions alternatives (quelques maigres pages à la fin contre une centaine de pages d'attaque frontale du système actuel). Il relaie ce que tout le monde sait à peu prés, avec une vision socialiste française anti-américaine classique.
Cet essai est aggréable à lire sans être revolutionnaire.
Un passage que j'ai aimé :
"Au principe écologiste, si utile à l'époque de la prise de conscience - 'penser globalement, agir localement' - il nous faut ajouter le principe que la situation impose : 'consommer moins, répartir mieux' "

Pour Kempf, la crise climatique et la crise sociale sont indissociable, elles sont interelliés dialectiquement. La grille d’analyse contextuelle qui met en place l’argumentaire de l’auteur est pertinente autant au niveau écologique que sur la montée de l’extrême-droite et du totalitarisme ( son passé de journaliste est vraiment présent dans la structure de l’argumentaire ) mais les solutions apportés sont teinté de libéralisme et de bourgeoisie. kempf tombe rapidement dans le mythe de la consommation ( c’est la production capitaliste le réel problème et non la consommation ) et oublie totalement la base mécanique de la mise en place du capitalisme et de sa reproduction : la propriété privée des moyens de production par la classe possédante et le salariat. Sa proposition politique d’émancipation reste fade et axé sur la réforme des institutions en place sans voir l’emprise de la classe dirigeante sur l’appareil d’état comme outil de domination et de contrôle de leur privilèges. Pour une analyse beaucoup plus pertinente et révolutionnaire je conseil le livre : pour une écologie du 99% au éditions ecosociété.

How the Rich are Destroying the Earth is a timely book by Herve Kempf, journalist with French daily paper Le Monde. The theme of the title will come as no surprise to many of us in the environmental movement who have become accustomed to the climate change deniers, in whose interests it is to pretend it is business as usual so they can carry on making money for the sake of it and to hell with the poor and the planet. In this excellent, but I have to say, rather depressing, book, the author asserts that the rich, by which he means the super-rich, are indeed destroying the earth through their greed and selfishness. As it states in the Foreword to the main body of the book: "Environmental devastation is class war by other means. It's not about attitudes or habits, not about tree huggers versus tree cutters. Not about Labour versus Conservatives or Democrats versus Republicans. It's the rich versus the rest of us." There are some of the usual suspects, of course, plus some most of us will never have heard of, and some you might not expect - unless you know your David Icke. At times the author sounds like Icke, but without the nonsense about blood-drinking, shape-shifting reptiles. Who needs conspiracy theories when the rich with the support of their allies in government and the media, are destroying the planet through their greed and power? The truth is enough without any embellishments.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the democracies of the West have been gradually abandoning their democratic credentials or pretensions, depending on your point of view. Prior to that time they liked to pose as the champions of freedom and human rights. Now, using the War on Terror they are, bit by bit, dismantling our hard-won freedoms. If we get a fascist dictatorship in the West, it won't be like that of Hitler, Mussolini or Franco. Times have changed and so have their methods. Techniques of social control have changed. The oligarchy, those rich and powerful men (and it is almost entirely men) who run our world, prefer the progressive bastardization of democracy, as the author puts it. Bit by bit we are having our democratic freedoms taken away from us, so that we don't notice until it is too late. We in the UK tend to associate the far right with parties like the BNP and I certainly do, but there is another far right ideology which is more insidious than the BNP because it is more mainstream and that is the likes of the neoconservatives in the US, formerly represented by the Bush Administration from 2001 to 2009.
We often hear about the trickle-down effect of the economy, the idea that the people on the bottom rung of society benefit if the rich are doing well. I have never believed this myself. But there is another trickle-down effect and that is in the social and political sphere, in which the rich influence the class below them and through them the whole of society. We may think that our ideas are our own, but the chances are we have been influenced by the media to some extent unless we never watch television, never read a paper, never use the Internet and never interact with colleagues or people in the pub. The ideology of the oligarchy, despite their seeming differences in the different parties they may support at any one time, is to perpetuate itself, it's only aim being to create even more wealth for itself and to do everything to protect that wealth, whatever it takes.
As the author points out, at least previous hierarchies had a purpose other than merely being exploitative. The aristocracy of the Middle Ages dreamed of building a transcendent order, their magnificent cathedrals being testament to their belief in a glorious God, which we can admire to this day, the cathedrals if not the religious sentiments. In Marx's day the bourgeoisie exploited the proletariat but also tried to educate and improve the proletariat through their museums, great public works and philanthropic schemes. Yes, this may seem paternalistic to us now, but they had a sense of purpose and one can recognise that they had some sort of sense of responsibility. Even during the Cold War, so close to our own time, the ruling classes saw themselves, probably quite sincerely, as defending our democratic freedoms against totalitarianism. But today's capitalists, the oligarchy, has no worthy aims other than to perpetuate wealth for the sake of wealth, and the power that goes with it. If that wealth and power means destroying the earth's resources and killing people in the process, so be it. As the author says in the chapter entitled Democracy in Danger, the Western capitalists have looked to China as an example of successful capitalism without democracy. In the past, however inaccurate this might have been in reality, capitalism had at least a pretense of democracy. But now, the gloves are off and western corporations like what they see in China with its one-party state, its lack of workers's rights, its low pay and lack of regulations regarding health and safety.
All this may seem depressing and indeed it is, if it were the only possible scenario. But the book ends on a more optimistic note, when its final chapter offers an alternative. Even so, I am not quite convinced that what the author recommends is enough and I was left feeling that he could have spent more time on discussing the alternatives, as I was left feeling a little deflated. Yes, I very much recommend this book but because it is important to know what we are up against, not because I want to feel good.

Pourquoi choisir ce titre pour ne jamais franchement aborder le sujet ? Le début est bien mais ensuite il part un peu dans tous les sens, Hervé. Dommage, parce qu'il avait prévu des choses en 2007 qui malheureusement s'avèrent de plus en plus exactes.

good overview of why the rich get by with polluting a lot and cause resource extraction catastrophe. its our fat cats and land lords doing this folks, so keep recycling your soda bottles, i'm sure it will help...make you feel better. author kempf is from le monde newspaper.

أنجبت ثلاث أطفال، ألقيت بهم لعالم ملي بالبؤس والحقد والغل والمرارة، كانهم ثلثا جنايات جنيتها، علي العالم وعليهم. هذا ما اعرتفت به بيني وبين نفسي بعد أن قرأت هذا الكتاب، وفي الحقيقة لقد توصلت إلي هذه الحقيقة قبل ان أقراه وقد دعم الكتاب موقفي.
هذا الكتاب لا يتحدث عن موضوع جديد، بل الموضوع قديم وبات معروفا للجميع، لكن الجديد في الموضوع أن الكتاب يتحدث مدعوما بحقائق قوية من الناحية العلمية والواقعية. الكتاب يتحدث عن عالم يتحكم فيه الأقوياء، قام فيه الأقوياء باقناع الضعفاء والفقراء بانهم سبب لازمة الكوكب، وأن الكوكب في حاجة للإقلال من نسل الفقراء، وإن كانت هذه حقيقة نعترف بها إلا إنها حقيقة مبتسرة، غير كاملة، فالحقيقة الكاملة أن الأغنياء هم سبب زيادة فقر الفقراء وسبب زيادة عدد الفقراء في العالم، كما انهم (الأغنياء) سبب فساد البيئة في الكوكب، وسبب استمرار حالة الانتحار الكوكبي التي نعيشها حاليا، وهم سبب الاحتباس الحراري الذي يكاد يودي بكوكبنا كاملا ويسقطه في هاوية اليأس، كما أن الأغنياء أيضا _ أفرادا ودولا _ تسببوا في زيادة كميات الملوثات ونقص مساحات الغابات مما يؤدي حاليا إلي عجز النظام الحيوي في الكوكب عن التعويض التلقائي لخسائره.
أيضا تسبب الأغنياء في انفلات التغير المناخي عن قدرة النظم عن إعادة ضبطه أو أعادة شيء مما فقده الكوكب من خسارة. كما ان الأغنياء هم سبب التغير القيمي في المجتمعات كلها نحو قيمة تعزز غناهم وهي قيمة الاستهلاك، فتحولت الشعوب بسببهم إلي قوي استهلاكية لمنتجاتهم، مما حمل الكوكب المزيد من الأعباء.
كما أن الاغنياء هم سبب زيادة جموح الحكومات نحو القيم الغير ديمقراطية لحماية مكتسباتهم حتي ولو كانت ضد مصالح الغالبية من الشعوب المستعبدة. كما ان الاغنياء يحاولون قصر المكتسبات عليهم وعلي زويهم من خلال إغلاق الطريق أمام الطبقة المتوسطة نحو الصعود وتغيير مستقبلها، عن طريق رفع تكاليف التعليم خاصة الدراسات العليا فوق قدرة الطبقة المتوسطة لمنع ترقي أبناء طبقات غير طبقتهم.
الحقائق التي أوردها المؤلف تجعلنا ننظر لمستقبلنا بكثير من الخوف والشك والحيرة، وتجعلنا نعيد النظر نحو انجاب المزيد من الأطفال في كوكب لا يعترف بهم ولا يؤمن بمستقبلهم.

Lire aujourd'hui cet ouvrage publié en 2007 laisse un goût bien amer. Car quinez ans plus tard, les mêmes conclusions se valent toujours autant. La planète se réchauffe d'année en année et les riches continuent de faire la sourde oreille. J'apprécie le ton provocateur qu'adopte l'auteur, n'hésitant pas à appeler un chat un chat en pointant du doigt le fait que la destruction de la planète est un acte délibéré de la part de l'oligarchie. Que ce serait aller contre leurs propres intérêts que de lutter contre, puisque la seule solution possible à ce stade serait un changement radical de notre système de production, chose que les riches ne feront jamais. L'auteur fait aussi le lien avec l'impéralisme et le pillage des ressources des pays du Sud, chose qui était peu discutée à l'époque et qui ne l'est toujours pas suffisamment aujourd'hui à mon sens. Il décrit à merveille la manière dont l'occidental moyen vit dans une bulle, ne voyant pas les effets ravageurs du changement climatique tel que les population du Sud Global le vivent au quoditien. Cela risque cependant de changer, au vu des canicules qui deviennent de plus en plus fréquentes d'année en année en Europe. Toutefois, contrairement à la note de fin de l'auteur, je trouve difficile de rester optimiste au vu de la dégradation inouïe de notre niveau de vie, de l'individualisme qui divise de plus en plus les gens, de l'exacérbation des inégalités. Car plus notre niveau de vie se dégrade, moins nous avons de temps et d'énergie à dévouer à notre organisation politique pour lutter contre les ultra-riches.

Keeping in mind this book was published in 2007, a lot of these ideas and predictions are spot on. There are a few dated worries like facial recognition, RFIDs, and GMOs (~are~ they still something we’re concerned about?) but this book covers big problems that are still central to environmentalism.
At times, the writer feels a bit pretentious and meandering (he can certainly be wordy) but he brings it all together in the end and it really helps you see the way all these problems interconnect, all because the ruling class wants to stay on top. His argument flows through a lot of human rights issues, inequality, deteriorating democracy, increased surveillance, prisons, and the Iraq war, all of which he explains in a satisfying way on their own. It isn’t perfect. It’s a big picture take on the issues and that has limitations. I didn’t love the way he talked about media like it was all part of the oligarchy, conflating journalists with rich media moguls - or at least failing to make any distinction. I worked as a local news journalist and I know the pressures on me were only in relation to ad dollars - you cater to the people who keep the paper in print. Big news outlets are different of course, but I believe a lot of journalists are well meaning and want to find truth. Whether or not they’re able to access and print those truths is another matter.
This reads a bit like a study, so it can be a bit dry, but it’s a great primer on these issues and how they are interconnected.
At times, the writer feels a bit pretentious and meandering (he can certainly be wordy) but he brings it all together in the end and it really helps you see the way all these problems interconnect, all because the ruling class wants to stay on top. His argument flows through a lot of human rights issues, inequality, deteriorating democracy, increased surveillance, prisons, and the Iraq war, all of which he explains in a satisfying way on their own. This dude was all over the place in his arguments. A degrowth zealot, he lamented the woes of capitalism and how it is leading to environmental harm, while at the same time taking precise aim against the global Left and Marxism. He also touted how much better Europe is with inequality than the U.S., even after a whole chapter just listing rich people from all over the place. The book is 15 years old now, so reading his predictions on inequality, explosive wealth capture by the ultra-rich, eroding democracies, and ecological damage was tough because many of those warnings and predictions have already come true.

Aunque el libro sea corto, Kempf hace un trabajo extraordinario explicando cómo es que los ricos contribuyen al calentamiento global, todo producto del sistema capitalista que ha llevado a la sociedad del consumismo. Incluso puedo dar miedo sobre cómo el gobierno espia para cpntrolar y mantener el sistema. Lectura obligada para entender mejor

Un livre assez intéressant. Assez évident à comprendre également. Après une introduction digne de ce nom, l'auteur explique comment crise écologique et crise sociale sont en réalité les 2 facettes d'une seule et même crise globale. Dans le troisième chapitre, Kempf présente les puissants de ce monde, comprenez ceux qui dirigent l'oligarchie actuelle, et leurs aspirations (ou plutôt leur manque d'aspirations). Intéressante conclusion est le fait que cette classe dirigeante ne possède, au contraire d'exemples du passé, en réalité aucun projet moteur, aucunes ambitions et aucune vision. Elle ne fait que se complaire dans son confort et refuse tout changement. Le quatrième, et sans aucun doute le plus intéressant, chapitre montre comment l'oligarchie actuelle exacerbe la crise écologique. Se basant sur la théorie du philosophe Thorstein Veblen, Kempf explique notamment comment la pression sociale pousse la population 'normale' à imiter les 'hauts dirigeants' et leur manière de vivre exacerbée, ce qui conduit au final au désastre environnemental que l'on connaît. Kempf se penche ensuite sur la démocratie occidentale, qui n'en est pas une en réalité, et expose plusieurs exemples (un peu de trop à mon goût) allant dans ce sens. Il clôture par les principaux obstacles qui bouchent le chemin à un quelconque renversement de situation (4 idées reçues à renverser et 3 forces permettant d'aller de l'avant ; très intéressant). Un bon petit livre avec quelques bonnes idées et inspiré par un air frais de décroissance et d'anti-capitalisme en arrière-fond!

August 9, 2011Que les riches soient de plus en plus riches, qu’une infime fraction de la population possède plus d’argent que l’ensemble de la dette du Tiers-Monde, que cette oligarchie « séparée de la plèbe » s’auto-renouvelle, ce sont là des faits qui ont bien souvent été écrits. Sans doute ce livre du Français Hervé Kempf, publié en 2007, a-t-il vieilli prématurément avec l’éclatement de la crise qui a remis d’actualité le gros de ses arguments : aucune croissance économique ne peut être éternelle et l’idéologie capitaliste, version fin du 20e siècle, n’avait pour unique fonction que de s’auto-célébrer. Mais il reste un petit quelque chose de neuf dans son argumentaire : l’imbrication entre cette crise et la crise écologique —« la synergie des crises ». Il faut hélas bien du temps pour y arriver et son petit livre (120 pages) aurait gagné en vigueur s’il était arrivé plus vite au coeur de ces arguments neufs : il faut stopper la croissance « matérielle ». Nous sommes dans une fenêtre d'opportunité où ce message a plus de chances d’être accepté —du moins, dans nos pays riches. Kempf a de plus l’avantage de rejoindre un public plus large, pas juste l’habituel lectorat voué à la défense de l’environnement. Ce qui rend son rôle de messager plus important encore.

August 1, 2011L'idée centrale est intéressante, notamment l'exposé des thèses de Thorstein Vleben (la plus pertinente étant l'analyse de l'effet que la consommation ostentatoire de biens de luxe par les classes aisées a sur les désirs des classes inférieures). Malheureusement le discours est un peu dilué dans une dénonciation de tout et n'importe quoi, certes argumentée mais sentant au final le remplissage facile.

Makes good points, brings up the overlooked book "The Theory of the Leisure Class" which basically says Marxism and Captailism are both wrong in that they look towards production growth as the way to end poverty, when actually you need a steady-state affair, not completling depleting resources in the name of greed and social distinction. Etc.

Ce livre n'est pas à mes yeux une révélation, mais il donne un point de vue différent qui complète celui que je peux déjà avoir sur l'écologie et comment vivre en communauté dans le monde actuel malgré les écarts de richesse importants.
Hervé Kempf fait ici une analyse très précise et cite de nombreux articles et ouvrages qui permettent de compléter encore plus sur ces sujets. J'ai personnellement acquis La classe de loisir de horstein Veblen que je lirai prochainement.
