A spooky season classic gets new life in this super chubby board book edition of the Peanuts gang’s whimsical Halloween adventures in It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!
It’s Halloween night, and the Peanuts gang is busy dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, and bobbing for apples. Meanwhile, Linus is waiting for the Great Pumpkin to rise from the pumpkin patch and bring toys to all the children of the world. Could this be the year it finally appears?
A pretty nearly yearly read in this house, and a classic, of course, featuring the somewhat confused Linus who writes a letter to the Great Pumpkin, fully expecting him to arrive, with presents. It won't be me to tell him the truth, having kept secrets about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny from my own children for years.
But who could deny the adoring younger sister Sally the opportunity to sit in the "most sincere" pumpkin patch with her sweet brother Linus? Who would dare call them clueless? And of course Charlie Brown (sorry, spoiler!) gets a rock in his trick or treat bag; in spite of that, he is still there to comfort Linus in the end.
Rated 5 stars and on my favorite shelf. Am stressed with my Padres in the Baseball playoffs so wanted to read something light. I know baseball isn't important with all the political drama and heartbreaking world events but it is my obsession (also The Beatles & reading!)
This is only 26 pages and is what I would describe as an abridged version of the classic TV episode. Still so heartwarming and funny. Read it as a Library Kindle on Tablet and the pictures are in color and capture the special artwork of Charles Schulz.
Have loved Peanuts since I was a child in 1950's & 60's. We even bought a beagle because of Snoopy! Although we named her Lucky :) Schulz was able to capture childhood experiences and worries with so much charm and humor. Our newspaper still reprints Peanuts everyday & so am able to recapturing my childhood memories of one of my favorite comics.
We mostly watch only free streaming but found out that Apple+ App will be streaming the Peanuts Halloween episode for free on Oct 19th and 20th. They will also stream for free the Thanksgiving episode on Nov 23rd & 24th and the Christmas episode on December 14th & 15th. Not sure but these free episodes might only be available in USA? Enjoy!
Just like the other TV special books in this series, you have to know, going in, the book leaves out a lot of the special. It’s another good children’s book, but I would like to compare it to the 60s version. These are children’s picture books, not the classic Schultz panel strip style. This was printed in 2015.
Based upon the animated Peanuts holiday movie of the same name, broadcast on American television in 1966, this sweet picture-book follows the (mis)adventures of Charlie Brown and his friends on Halloween night. The somewhat befuddled Linus is convinced that the Great Pumpkin - a holiday gift-giver with a sack of presents for children, who is said to visit the most "sincere" pumpkin patch - will come this year. Mocked by his bossy sister Lucy, Linus sticks to his beliefs, and is joined in his wait by Sally, Charlie Brown's little sister. Although that young girl is disappointed at the outcome of their nighttime watch, Linus is not dissuaded. Perhaps next year, he will find the right patch in which to wait...
The edition of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown that I read was published in 2015, and lists someone named Kara McMahon as an adapter, so I would assume that the story I experienced was not the full version, as written by Schulz. Leaving that issue aside, I found the narrative enjoyable enough, but not outstanding. I couldn't help feeling, as I read along, that I was meant to find things more amusing and more poignant than I really did. I wonder if I would have felt differently, if I grew up watching the television show? We didn't have a television in the house when I was young, so I've never seen any of the Peanuts specials. In any case, this is one I would recommend to Peanuts fans primarily, especially if they have fond memories of the television special upon which it is based.
This is one of the classics, but this newer version lacked the depth and interest that the original has. It looks like there was a page limit set, and the author had to get the entire story in this small page count. The illustrations were well done, however, so it still gets a higher rating.
An absolute classic! I love the tale of the Great Pumpkin coming out on a Halloween night and how much Linus believes in it. You just can't go wrong with Peanuts and especially a seasonal Peanuts story. I'll be writing my letter to the Great Pumpkin soon.
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown - Charles M. Schulz
“Tricks or Treats, money or eats!”
I love Snoopy & Woodstock! I have knitting patterns for both of them, and I may make my own little versions someday—Halloween-inspired, of course. ☺️ Such a cute little story. These characters never get old. I can't wait for Halloween. 🎃
Jack and I borrowed this book from the library because he loves Snoopy right now. He enjoyed the book so much he had me read it again right away. He thought it was funny when Snoopy entered the pumpkin patch and Linus fainted.
Linus writes a letter to the great pumpkin will he be at the giant patch? There’s a Halloween party that same night and him and sally are missing all the fun. Charlie is there but is he having fun or being made fun of?
This oversized board book is an abridged retelling of 1966 animated television special "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"
As the Peanuts cast prepares to celebrate Halloween, Linus writes his yearly letter to the Great Pumpkin, a Santa Claus-like figure who rises out of the "most sincere pumpkin patch" on Halloween and flies through the sky bringing presents to all the good girls and boys around the world. While the other children are openly skeptical about the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown's younger sister Sally who harbors unrequited love for Linus shows an interest.
The characters gather, dressed up in their Halloween costumes. When everyone sets off to trick-or-treat, followed by a Halloween party, Linus steadfastly remains in the pumpkin patch to wait for the Great Pumpkin. He is joined by Sally whose love for Linus overcomes her doubts about the Great Pumpkin.
Charlie Brown, who struggled with the scissors and whose ghost costume is riddled with holes, receives only rocks while everyone else receives candy. At the Halloween party, he suffers yet another humiliation when asked to model for the Jack-O'-Lantern only to have a face drawn on the back of his bald head.
Back at the pumpkin patch, Linus and Sally see someone appear. Linus faints in the excitement, but it turns out to be Snoopy dressed as the World War I Flying Ace. Sally, angry at having missed trick-or-treating and a Halloween party, leaves, and Lucy arrives to take Linus home hours later.
The following day Linus expresses hope to Charlie Brown that next year he will receive a visit from the Great Pumpkin.
The text is very wordy for a board book, and the writing leaves often something to be desired, but the illustrations approximate the cartoon very well. Young readers who already know the story may enjoy flipping through the pages and looking at the pictures more than actually reading or listening to the words.
There's a reason this tale has turned into a classic, and this book makes it fun to let the younger end of the reading audience enjoy it whenever they would like.
The board book is large, spanning around a foot in length. The pages are a tad bit thinner than the standard, sturdy board books. So, this one will take more of a beating than a standard picture book but does need a bit of care. The pages are easy to wipe off for smaller mishaps.
The illustrations carry familiar settings, characters and scenes, and are very bright and bold. The larger size of the book makes each one fun to sink into. The text is on the heavier side for a board book, but does a good job at condensing the original tale down into a readable amount for the intended age group. In other words, this one makes a nice read-aloud and will have fans of the show as well as others kept in the story.
It's a lovely way to enjoy the classic tale and keeps the spirit of it nicely. The characters come across well, and while I did find the ending a little abrupt, at first, it's not really considering the age group. I enjoyed this version quite a bit and am adding it to my book shelf because this one will continue to be a favorite for years to come. I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed how this one is formatted and done for the age group.
We’ve read this book in the past, but this is Halloween we were given a copy of it. For whatever reason it did not hold my five-year-old sons attention this year 🤷🏻♀️ so this time around I’d rank it at ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
2023 review: At 8 We've read this book several more times, most recently last night. He's ready to part with it and so we've donated it to our local library. He's read it several times over the last few years. Sad to see it go after so many reads!
On Halloween eve while all the other children prepare for Halloween, Linus convinces Sally to wait in the patch for the Great Pumpkin. The night becomes a fist are for Linus and of course also for Charlie Brown. This the story of what happens and as always the Peanuts gang are a joy to watch as they go through their antics. Recommend this to children and their parents without hesitation.
It's Halloween night, between costumes, trick-or-treat and apples, Linus and his friends are looking forward to the Great Pumpkin and the toys that it brings to all the children of the world. With easy-to-follow storyline, this book is about expectations, patience and disappointment. It conveys a straightforward message in an engaging and exciting way. A mostly sincere story.
[ I received a complimentary copy from the publisher - Simon kids . All opinions are my own ]
the kindle format is really cool. while it is still the classic story, you can also interact with it from creating your own peanuts avatar to carving a jack o' lantern and lots of other stuff. every year since i was a little kid ive been watching this and it is still one of my favorite Halloween stories even all these years later.
Adapted from the classic, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a nostalgic feel good Halloween children’s books. Linus is convinced The Great Pumpkin will appear while the kids go trick or treating. Even though Linus doesn’t get his wish his optimism is a great lesson for children.
Thank you Simon Kids for gifting me a copy to review.
