Catherine Kean - A Knight's Temptation (Knight's #3)

A ruby pendant stands at the center of this tale of disgrace, plotting, redemption, and the reunion of childhood friends.

Aldwin Treynarde is a squire who, in his youth, was banished from home for shooting Lord Geoffrey de Lanceau with a crossbow bolt and nearly killing the man. Later on, Aldwin discovered that he had been set up by the deceitful Baron Sedgewick, who fed him false stories about the lord's wrongdoings. Now, several years later, Lord Geoffrey sends out a call for volunteers to find a stolen, valuable jeweled pendant before it falls into the hands of the Baron and his wife Veronique. Aldwin accepts at once and hopes to make amends to Lord Geoffrey. If he excels in his duty, he hopes he might even be awarded knighthood.

Meanwhile, Lady Leona Ransley and her aging father, who have possession of the pendant, want only to turn it in anonymously and collect the reward money. Under an assumed name, Leona arranges for a secret meeting with Aldwin in a seedy tavern, and, making yet another rash decision, Aldwin decides to kidnap her. She fights furiously against him and finally reveals her true identity: she and he had once been great companions. In fact, Aldwin had nearly caused her death 12 years earlier when they disturbed a bees' nest during a childhood game. By this point, the feckless squire desires his warrior captive more than any woman he has ever met, and he knows he has one last chance to protect her life.

Only by settling the events of their past and fighting side by side will Aldwin and Leona be able to defeat their opponents and surrender to their greatest temptation - love.

Kathryn Le Veque - Lord Of The Shadows

1215 A.D.

The reign of King John means dark days for all of England. Not one man, woman or child lived without fear.

Magnifying this fear is the man they call The Lord of the Shadows - a terrifying figure who sits at the right hand of the King, manipulating the royal moves like a puppet master. The Lord of the Shadows has been known to tear men apart with his bare hands and can, with a snap of his fingers, alter the future of anyone he chooses. The nobility is terrified of him, and for good reason. That is - the nobility that know of his existence.

Lady Sheridan St. James has been drawn into the political arena by her father - having no sons, he bequeaths his power and knowledge to his eldest daughter, a stunningly beautiful and bright creature. Upon his death, Sheridan finds herself at the head of the mighty House of St. James, a major leader in the rebellion against the crown.

During her first visit to London she becomes acquainted with a massive knight who has, in kindness, saved her sister's life. She has no idea Sir Sean de Lara is the man known as The Lord of the Shadows, but even when she is told of his horrible deeds she still cannot not believe it. Sheridan and Sean draw close despite the influence of the horrendous affairs of state sweeping London. All she knows is that he is handsome and kind, and although Sean is well aware of the lady's status, it makes no difference that she is, in perception, his enemy. To Sean, Sheridan is quickly becoming his reason for living - but out of necessity his responsibilities to the king become stronger than his love for Sheridan and he is forced to perform his duties or risk death to them both.

Still, Sean swears to her that his days as the Shadow Lord are numbered even as rival factions cruelly separated them. It soon becomes a test of Sean and Sheridan's love to find each other again in a world which is determined to keep them apart.

Overall, this was just okay for me. The first book, by Catherine Kean, was entertaining enough but pretty slapdash in it's medieval atmosphere and I wasn't a fan of the idea of falling in love with a man who tied the heroine up and kidnapped her. I really didn't like the second book by Kathryn Le Veque. Despite some historical name dropping the medieval world building was pretty ordinary; and the story and characters just didn't work for me. The third book by Anna Markland was by far the best written, had the best medieval atmosphere and the characters were much better drawn. I wasn't keen on the story twists needed to ensure that the heroine was still a virgin and wasn't a fan of the miraculous elements. The final book by Laurel O'Donnell was readable but the characters being rendered complete idiots by love got pretty annoying. Wasn't really a fan of the more cliched characters - slutty, evil sister and moustache twirling villain.

3 were excellent

The first, second and final stories were very good, the third one dragged out too much leading to skipping numerous pages and already I don't remember what I read but I remember the others.

Knights and Ladies

All the stories were great. All the action that can happen in Mid-E vil times was exciting. All the love that all made happy endings was heart warming. All turned out fine in each book. Thanks to the authors of each book. I enjoyed the whole group.

This has got to be the best boxed set of books I have ever read. Four absolutely wonderful stories in which I fell in love with the main characters time and time again.

The first story is Knight's Temptation by Catherine Kean. I have already purchased 3 more books by this authoress and I cannot wait to read them. Catherine immediately grabs your imagination and draws you into the rich, and not often nice-smelling world, of the medievael.

The story begins with three children playing - two boys, and one girl. The girl, like many girls before her, wants to play the game the boys are playing but she is the one who gets tied to a tree. A near fatal mistake for 8 year old Leona Ransley.

Leona survives but her brother does not. Times as they are in the late 12th century two dark characters threaten Leona's home, and her beloved father.

Aldwin who is a knight with honour that keeps getting subverted by those who tell tales finds that he must remain true to his loyalties, and then he discovers that the young woman he kidnapped he is fast falling in love with. He must use both his crossbow and his mind to unravel lies from the truth, and even then, it may not end well.

Leona and Aldwin are instantly endearing because each is fallible. The romance is just that -- a romance not smut with a side of crossbow. Both try to deny their attraction, and then neither can put it aside.

The next story is Lord of the Shadows by Kathryn LeVeque. I began my original quest of romance as opposed to smut and my search led me to authoress LeVeque. I have already read one story of hers, and looked forward to this one; I was not disappointed.

The Lord of Shadows is a knight of fearsome reputation and even the king he protects is wary of his knight, Sean de Lara. Sean does not like what he has had to do as a spy but much like my beloved Severus Snape, there is more to Sean than a past of screams and blood.

Sean finds himself rapidly falling in love with the nearly unattainable Sheridan St. James. She is an intelligent young woman with an extensive property and title -- this during a time when women were not allowed such a thing. Sheridan is a strong woman and I was caught up with her, but her sister really needed someone to slap her and do so several times. Alys is every feather-brained, flighty woman of that day and age, and really you can't help but think that Death is just around the corner waiting for her. Thankfully Alys has her older sister Sheridan.

Love, though, threatens to derail all of it including the Lord of Shadows. War arrives and Sheridan, Sean, and Alys may suffer terribly.

The third novel Dance of Love by Anna Markland really took me by surprise because I was prepared to skip this story from the first page; I thought I would not like Farah.

However, with the arrival of Farah from the land of infidels the reader is introduced to the sort of family one does not expect from the medievael world. Isembart - who likes to be called Izzy - is unexpected. He suffers from a terrible form of arthritis that has attacked, and crippled his hands. He is certain love will never be for him but then he sees Farah.

Izzy is stubborn, and he's also frightened -- of himself. It is this fear that nearly ruins his chance at love and happiness. The token of the dancer, Farah's most prized possession the sword called a shamshir shatters that fear. Izzy follows after Farah to proclaim himself but danger threatens them both.

I, too, have arthritis in my hands, and so I had a particular affinity to both Izzy and Farah who lived a strange life amongst the Infidels. I discovered that the authoress Anna Markland specialises in a type of hero or heroine that is hit by a physical difficulty that almost bears not thinking of. She dealt very well with Izzy's arthritis and through Farah he is able to discover a strength he thought he never had.

I have not purchased any other books by Miss Markland but I have lined up a few on my wishlist that will be purchased as soon as I can do so.

The last story is The Lady and the Falconer by Laurel O'Donnell. I have only read the first chapter and already I know I am caught in the threads of a beautiful tapestry of a story. If anyone recalls the fantasy movie Ladyhawke there are shades of this story in The Lady and the Falconer. If you've never seen Ladyhawke get it and watch it. If you've never read anything by Laurel O'Donnell than spend .99 cents for this boxed set, and treat yourself.

These are all 5 start stories of novel length. And, I have four new favourite authors.

Way more than 5 stars!

This is such a magnificent opportunity for individuals that want to read high quality Medieval Romances. All of these books are good. I have read all of these, but my favorite in this set is Lord of the Shadows by Kathryn Le Veque. This is by far the best Medieval Romance book I have ever read...ever. To the extent that if Sir Sean de Lara was real, I would hide him and keep him forever. It truly deserves more than five stars.

The story of Lady Sheridan St. James and Sir Sean de Lara is magnificent. It is a complete page turner. My emotions were all over the map with this one. The scenes were so descriptive, I felt like I was there. I was intrigued with Sean and proud of Sheridan. I was tense throughout, I laughed, cried and even prayed. This book to me was better than Romeo and Juliet could ever be. It touched my very heart. This author has such a gift, which she shares through her writing.

I hope individuals purchase the boxed set. They will not be disappointed. All of these books are wonderful. What a great collaboration of putting these books together! Thank you to the authors for this fantastic gift. The price is crazy...This is why I say it is a g

These boxed sets are always a great way to introduce one to an author that one might not have had an opportunity to have read before.

The best book in this series, without a doubt, was Kathryn Le Veque's "Lord of the Shadows." I rated that book separately with five stars. And, I was thrilled to have discovered another author new to me (where have I been) who just wet my appetite for more of her books. I have already picked up a bunch on Amazon and I can't wait to start reading them.

The other books in this set were entertaining, but Kathryn Le Veque's book stood head and shoulders amongst the rest. ;)

Love medieval romance!

The books had all the right mix. Love, danger, fear, excitement, trust and betrayal.
Boxed sets aren't my favorite simply because they seem to have shortened storylines. For instance no epilogue.

This was great to read different stories from different authors from the medieval times. However, at times it felt like it was going on forever. The characters do connect with you and feel realistic. Wold recommend but as a reminder these stories are not connected by a theme or author.
