The breathtaking sequel to the No.1 New York Times bestseller, Immortal Dark.
Like all ruinous things, he came from the abyss.
Kidan Adane has finally embraced her darkness. She's killed without remorse, lied, and broken Uxlay University's most sacred law by inviting elusive rogue vampires into Uxlay.
Trapped with a violently unstable vampire, and reeling from her sister's return, Kidan wields her anger like a weapon. She vows to master her house and protect the sacred artefact hidden inside, even if it means working with her enemies and betraying Susenyos.
As devastating secrets resurface from the past, Kidan and her sister, June, must finally confront each other and take their rightful places in the looming war.

UPDATE: I have read the book and it was truly a page turner. The story did a good job of moving the plot along while reminding the reader of Book 1 without info dumping. Book 1 is still my favorite and this book is a solid 4 /4.5 stars. I read the book in two days and I audibly gasped from all the plot twists. However, I don't have the same book hangover as book one where I read and reread my favorite pages.
----
Have not read but compensating for the unkindness of a person rating this book one star though no arcs are even available. Wishing Tigest much success 🫶🏽
I will personally not be okay until this book's cover is announced, the synopsis is out, the publication date is set in stone, and then the book is in my hands.
The sequel curse is upon us again. I loved immortal dark, it was a breath of fresh air(a bloody, brutal, cruel one) that I needed. I will always compare it to interview with the vampire in the sense they are not good people, all characters are terrible people, but you still find things that make you love them. However, this book was a little all over the place. We have multiple POVs and the scope of the story just got so much bigger and it was so sudden. The ending was a little rushed and we got some important information but no time to process it. And we have so many new characters and information about the world, which is both good and bad because it was cool but not explored enough. It's too long and at the same time not long enough, It could've been two books or a part of it could be explored in the next installment. I'm assuming this is a trilogy, otherwise there was no reason for how rushed some parts were. I still love the characters, the romance was explored a little more(but don't get me started in something that happened at the end I'm MAD). I liked it, but nowhere near how much I love Imortal Dark, unfortunately.
Better enemies-to-lovers than The Cruel Prince and reimagined Ethiopian vampires and lore set within a dark academia.
So what if she died a little kissing him?
Immortal Dark surprised me last year by how dark and gritty it was for a Young Adult.
In book two, we learn more about the rules of the Houses and how politically driven every action is. Fear and gain drives every character.
The friendships did take a backseat in this instalment which allows Kidan to find out who she is in this new role and world. Book one, she was floundering and fuelled by rage and revenge. She was hunted. Now, she wants to be the hunter, but knows she has to be more careful about achieving her aims.
Without her active hatred toward him... toward herself, Kidan didn't know what remained between them. But it was a force of its own, a concentrated ball of magnetic energy that threatened to explode whenever they were in close proximity. But other times, it was gentler, a hand extended over a cliff, dragging her away from the abyss like now.
The ending had me in a chokehold. I don’t think this was quite as dark as book one, or maybe it is because I went in knowing what to expect.
Eternal Ruin was probably my most anticipated read of the year after Immortal Dark so completely and thoroughly blew my mind last year. I called Immortal Dark "the Black vampire novel of my teenage dreams," and Eternal Ruin was an excellent continuation of so many things I loved. Kidan is on a journey that isn't at all clearly defined—the way she's written is so dynamic and morally flexible that sometimes I was rooting for her and other times I wanted to yell! That's still my sista though!
Susenyos and June both have POVs in this book, which not only kept the story constantly moving forward, it also kept things interesting. With each POV context is given, lore explored, intentions exposed, and true feelings are revealed. Did I want to tussle with June and Susenyous? Well, yes! But I really loved being in their heads, so all is forgiven.
For the first 200 or so pages I wondered if Eternal Ruin had the infamous book 2 lull. I believe this is mostly because I haven't reach much dark academia, and the dark academia I have read tends to not really focus on the day to day learning, tests, etc. There are a lot of those things present here, and while they're not boring and absolutely serve a purpose in the big picture, I admittedly got fatigued. However, by the time I got to that point, the book picked up and stuck with that pacing.
Girma's prose is lyrical and bold, disavowing oppressive institutions and outdated customs that do more harm than good in a modern world without directly tying it into these modern times in an overt way. The skillful execution of the plot, paired with characters you can't help but love made this a truly special read, and I cannot wait to read the final book in this trilogy! The ending was WILD! It's so rare that a book makes me drop my jaw for real, for real!
Thank you to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Colored Pages book Tour for both the free copy and eARC!
Fantastic followup to one of my favorite books the year it came out!! Often a second book in a series like this will be lackluster, but I'm happy to say that Eternal Ruin was not at all a disappointment. It continues the story in an interesting way, moving forward the main characters, bringing fresh revelations and new mysteries, and still as twisty, dark, and sexy as Immortal Dark was. I loved it and can't wait for the conclusion!
A central theme seems to be that power always comes at a price. The characters have difficult choices to make and don't always make the right ones. The stakes are quite literally life and death, requiring them to choose between love and power. I won't spoil things, but I think this series is truly top tier and definitely recommend it. The audio narration is also excellent! I received an audio review copy via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.
I need to hurry up and read book 1 so I can read this, didn’t realize the arc was sitting in my email, I’ve heard good things about the series so far tho!!✨
I need this book so badly. also love that Tigest Girma is from Australia too. The first book slapped and has me in a choke hold cause i cannot stop thinking about it.
Thank you so much to Hachette Audio for providing me with an ALC in exchange for an honest review!
I truly wasn’t expecting this sequel to wow me as much as it did after reading Immortal Dark, but Tigest Girma swept me away from the first page. Eternal Ruin is FANTASTIC! It's such a great sequel, and never leaves you bored for a second. I tabbed scenes from probably every single chapter, whether it was something about the romance, character development, or a crazy plot twist. These days, I feel like there are very few authors who taks big swings in their novels, and I really appreciate Tigest for doing just that in this book. The choices that she makes for our characters raise the stakes so high! I’m truly at a loss for words at how our characters are going to recover from the events of this book. 😭😭😭
The romance also was SO INSANE AHHHH. If you thought Susenyos was crazy in Immortal Dark, please be aware that he only gets crazier in Eternal Ruin. 🤚His POV chapters fed me, gave me so much serotonin, cleared my skin, etc. This series has one of the best enemies to lovers arcs I've ever read. I love Kidan and Susenyos' dynamic so much. They're literally the definition of morally grey, even when they don't need to be. At the same time, I loved all their softer, more romantic moments in this book. The things Suseynos thinks about Kidan in his head OMGGGG I DIED. Once again, I'm so curious to see how their dynamic will change in Book 3 after this book's ending. 🥲
In general, I think Tigest does such a good job with character development. Kidan is one of the most interesting FMCs I've ever read about. I love how she has so much deep-rooted rage about the world she's living in, the circumstances she's forced to endure, and certain people around her. Black women and other women of color very rarely are allowed to feel this sense of rage in the real world, so it makes me appreciate Kidan as a character so much more. Her relationships with June, her friends, and Susenyos' friends were so complex in this book. I loved how everyone’s dynamics had their ups and downs throughout the novel. The found family vibes were also super strong in this book, which I loved.
Overall, I highly recommend picking up this sequel, and picking it up quickly so you can avoid spoilers. I read the physical copy for the first 30% of the book, and then switched to the audiobook for the rest of the novel. I loved the narrators for both Kidan and Susenyos (as well as the other POVs that pop in this book). They brought both characters' inner monologues to life so well!
I'm definitely giving this book 5 stars! I need Book 3 in my hands immediately.
I've been waiting for this!! Eternal Ruin picks up right where Immortal Dark left off, and I'm happy to report that the dark sinister university is still delivering the creeping, mysterious experience - except with an even larger cast of morally grey characters with hidden agendas.
I will scream from the rooftops just how well I think Girma has developed this world, its lore, the magic system and a fresh take on vampires. Every single detail of this University, the intricacies of the society it exists in and the political chess games that are going on between key families is some of the most interesting ive read about in a long time. There’s a deep exploration of the characters heritage and identity, and what the cost of either severing or aligning yourself to ideologies that your family holds.
This second book was considerably longer than book one, and we are blessssed with several new points of view, as well as hidden truths being revealed and an insane cliff hanger yet again. Our characters continue to walk the fine line of spiralling in their anger, ambition and grief and still trying to protect those they love and care about. The HOUSES will forever be one of the coolest things this series introduced us to. I love how complex and nuanced all of our side characters are also, and in a cutthroat university that thrives of mistrust and secrets, it really keeps you on your toes about who to trust, and whether there ever is such a thing as true loyalty.
There were times during the 30%-60% marks that felt long, and revelations and scenes that were given chapters each I felt could have been condensed to make for better pacing. I also felt like I never really had a complete grasp on exactly where our main characters were at mentally, and it felt tricky to establish and keep a connection with them - but I still appreciated how much of a ringer Girma was putting them through.
I really really enjoyed everything we learned and I cant wait to see how this series is going to wrap up and I BEG that people get onto this series if they haven't alreadyyyyyy!
Eternal Ruin was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and it did not disappoint — in fact, it completely surpassed every expectation I had. Tigest Girma has crafted an utter masterpiece: a haunting sequel full of impossible choices, rich world-building, and gorgeously gothic prose that clings to you long after you close the book.
At its core, Eternal Ruin is a story about sacrifice — about what each character is willing to lose in pursuit of their desires, their duty, or their survival. It broke me in every possible way. I gasped aloud, cried, and genuinely grieved as the consequences unfolded. Girma’s writing is intelligent, sharp, and devastatingly beautiful — her twists are so well-executed they leave you reeling.
Picking up immediately after the harrowing events of Immortal Dark, Eternal Ruin is moderately paced but deeply immersive, drawing readers into the emotional wreckage and moral complexity left behind. This time, we’re gifted with additional POVs — most notably Susenyos, whose dark, brooding inner world adds a whole new layer to the story. Getting inside his head was everything I didn’t know I needed from book one. We also see through the eyes of June, Kidan’s sister, which adds depth and heartbreak in equal measure after the events of the first book. We also finally explore June's disappearance, and I was taken completely off guard by the truth behind her actions in the best way possible.
This sequel expands on the lore of the Sentient and Noble Houses, deepening one of the most fascinating magic systems I’ve encountered in recent fantasy. The Dark Academia aspect, already strong in Immortal Dark, reaches perfection here — paired with lush Ethiopian mythology and historical undertones that make the world feel both ancient and alive.
I am both desperate and terrified for book three. The ending of Eternal Ruin left me shattered — Kidan’s choices, the cost she pays, and the emotional weight of it all … I didn’t see it coming. Tigest Girma has ruined me in the best possible way, and I wouldn’t have it any other.
I am deeply thankful to Hachette Australia for sending me a gorgeous proof to read early in exchange for an unbiased review.
Ahhh, I enjoyed this so much. Every time I picked it up, I’d get completely lost in the story. The academic rivalry, family mysteries, betrayals, bloodlust, and devastating romance, I was eating it all up.
The relationship between Kidan and Yos feels like true enemies to lovers. The slow but fierce transition from deadly animosity to ravenous desire, ughhh it was delicious!
There were so many moving parts it was almost overwhelming at first but they all pieced together sooo well. The lore and reveals that were dropped was crazy and so unexpected, each development was more stunning than the last.
This whole book just felt full of surprises, I was gripping the pages in anticipation, and the ending gave me chills. I couldn’t believe it. I cannot WAIT for the final book. 😩
How can it end like this?? No, no, no!!! I need book three. I’m genuinely terrified about what will happen next.
Eternal ruin was a rollercoaster ride. It picked up right where Immortal Dark left off, which I loved! There was tension, the stakes got deadlier, things got personal, and it was insane. Let’s just say my opinions about certain characters definitely changed by the end of the book. Some I'm happy about, others I am heartbroken over.
I really liked how we got more of Susenyos’ backstory about his story with Samson and the Nefrasi. And it was nice to see Susenyos and Kidan finally working together instead of trying to destroy each other for once. What a smart and devious duo. Ahh, the things they could do.
It was also really fun to have multiple POVs throughout the book. It was nice to see what certain people's true motives were.
Eternal Ruin is action-packed and will keep you on your toes. So much happened!!!!! I can't iterate that enough! A lot was covered, and I'm very eager to see what Tigest does in book three. I don’t want to spoil anything, all I’m going to say is - be ready. You and your emotions are going to go through it!!!
Well this is the perfect name because I feel utterly ruined. Now to wait for book three. I hate waiting. The pacing was so good even as I didn’t want it to end, it picked up right where book one ended and so much happens. It one wild emotional ride. I absolutely love Tigests writing style, its almost addictive and can’t wait for the next one. Fair warning it does end on a cliff hanger. Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author.
♰ I personally enjoyed this more than the first book.
My experience with the characters’ chapters
₰ Yos puts me in a mini slump → ragebaited me → overly ragebaited me ₰ Kidan : ragebaited me → overly ragebaited me → indifference ₰ June : Team June → intrigued → lost potential
╰┈➤ Kidan and Yos (especially Yos ) became insufferable in this book. I could NOT stand them.
𐙚 I couldn’t stand how Kidan treated June in the beginning. Like I said in my review for the last book even though I get why Kidan felt hurt, every reason she had for feeling “betrayed” by June just felt like misplaced anger.
𐙚 She blamed June for crossing lines she chose to cross. Like yes, but also… HUH? It never felt like she had any reason to feel that betrayed enough to bully her sister because she dared to laugh with friends.
𐙚 And her anger toward certain people came out of nowhere. But Kidan being angry and irrational is expected and me and angry, irrational characters famously do not click.
╰┈➤ But OMG, Yos was awful I literally took a four-day break from the book because I was dreading his POV. He’s so…..so…..selfish. That’s the word.
𐙚 I hate when characters who don’t deserve things get them easily just because they’re main characters with a “tragic” story. At least Kidan had guilt, or thought about other people sometimes. Yos? Never once did he think about what he DID to Samson. It was always about himself and how his “cowardice” cost him. There’s a clear distinction there, and I stand by it😭
𐙚 Because of my deep hate for them , every ounce of chemistry they had in book one was Gone. I genuinely could not give two fucks about their cringe little relationship. Is it still the best enemies-to-lovers arc so far? Oui. Do I care? Absolutely not. I wanted them both burned at the stake.
╰┈➤ Also, I fully support House Adane being stripped from middle house status. Sorry, but even though they sprinkled in a reason why it would be “dangerous,” I too would be mad as hell if the only law I had was designed to protect a university that barely cared about me.
╰┈➤ And once again, can people stop calling this book dark academia? The academic part is maybe 7% of the story, even though it somehow takes place in a school. Like… wtf.
╰┈➤ I was not moved by Yusef’s death. I knew I was supposed to feel something but it was more like:
“Oh, he passed away? Awn awn… awnn okay ”
╰┈➤ Also, can someone explain why breaking the Dranacti makes sense??? Am I just too stuck on vampire logic? In what world does it make sense to make a vampire able to feed on more humans instead of one 💀
𐙚 And when they said they’ll search for the mask which broke the binds that weakened their strength and everyone was cheering Kidan on…why was she smiling?? Like girl… am I the only one thinking about the humans right now?!😭
·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ Things I need in the next book: • More June chapters (but actually make them interesting) • Samson chapters • Less Susenyos chapters • More queer characters. I just realized there were literally none. When Kidan called Qara June’s “partner,” I thought she meant girlfriend, so when she had that weird moment with Taj, I was like huh??? Turns out “partner” just meant partner, not partner partner. • Love the Black rep (obviously everyone’s Black), but please bring in some queer rep too. • And for the love of all things holy, don’t make the next book too damn long like this one
·˚ ༘₊· ͟͟͞͞꒰➳ Immortal Dark Trilogy so far:
Immortal Dark — 3.0 stars Eternal Ruin — 3.25 stars
Eternal Ruin has cemented the Immortal Dark series as one of my favorites of all time. It's dark, gritty, funny, heartbreaking, SMART, fast-paced. It has the coolest world and magic system. Dark Academia but make it extremely deadly and with sentient houses and vampires. This series is just so fresh. The enemies are really, really enemies., and they're turned reluctant (very) allies in Eternal Ruin. I love the mysteries here, and there are so many. And they all really hurt. And I cannot believe this ending, and I need book 3 immediately.
This series is so well paced. It is ON from page one and never lets up. It's such a page turner, and I can usually guess where stories are going to go. I never have any clue what is going to happen in this series. Tigest Girma is a national treasure. The character development is also insane. Getting Susenyos POV in this story was SUCH A TREAT. I have been wondering what was going through his head since day 1, and it helped so much understand his decision making. Getting Jude's POV?!? I never would have expected that. UGH. The relationship between Kidan and Jude kills me.
You MUST pick this series up. If you loved Ninth House, you're going to love Immortal Dark and Eternal Ruin.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE YEAR TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!!! What am I supposed to do with my life till then?! The twists.... The turns.... The crazy! It's just so good!!
Follows where Immortal Dark left off. Kidan embraces her darkness, and her sister returns. This is an emotional rollercoaster of betrayals. Trust no one, dual POV with good flow! Definitely recommend that the narrators were excellent. You really felt the world and the characters! Thank you, Netgalley and Hachette Audio, for the opportunity in return for my honest review.
Honestly I don’t even know what to see besides where is the third book!? What an ending. I cannot wait to finish this story because it has been such a crazy ride so far.
The pacing of this one was interesting and the book was a little dense but overall I still had a good time. There was rarely a moment when I really wanted to put this book down because it had me on the edge of my seat. There were so many twist and turns and I can only imagine what will happen next.
There was a lot of great character development for Kidan and Susenyos, especially Kidan. I know she got a lot of flack in the first book but she was going through a lot and still is but she definitely chilled out while still being chaotic. I also actually enjoyed getting a perspective from June as well.
Overall I really enjoyed this. I can’t wait for the third book. The narrators did an amazing job!
I definitely enjoyed immortal dark more than this and I found myself struggling to want to read in the middle chunk of this book. I think not as much mystery maybe surrounding the events especially in dranacti class that it just kind of dragged for me a bit. I ended up immersive reading for the last about half of the book to get myself more into it and it helped. The last 120 pages is where it picked up for me and I became more invested but the last couple chapters also felt a little rushed. I will admit I found June insufferable in the beginning and really just wanted her dead because girl wtf… but her chapter that revealed some critical information around her little sleep disorder changed my mind on her. I can only assume that’s the effect that was intended all along. The final book will definitely be an interesting trip.
4.25🌟 This series continues to have me in a chokehold. I still love these characters: deeply flawed, morally questionable, and emotionally unwell in the most compelling way. Susenyos and Kidan are peak “toxic soulmates,” perfectly matching each other’s damage like it’s destiny. Should they be making better choices? Absolutely. Do I understand why they don’t? Unfortunately, yes.
What really works is how well their backstories and inner turmoil are explored. You see exactly why they make the choices they do, even when those choices are objectively terrible. The plot is slower than in book one, which is why this isn't a full five stars, but the emotional depth more than makes up for it.
Still obsessed. Still invested. Still counting down to the next book.❤️🔥
Hachette I will forever be indebted to you for giving me an arc! I thought I was ruined after book 1 but Tigest has proven things can get so much worse 😭
This book is so devastatingly tragic yet so beautiful. I truly don’t know what to do with myself now that it’s over. Do yourselves all a favour and read this absolute masterpiece…or don’t if you like being happy.
You know how Immortal Dark had us with stomach knots and going through all the motions, well this one is worse...
I lost sleep, stress ate biscoff cookies and got a crook in my neck! All because this story lost no steam or speed. We hop straight back into the mix of things with our friends and hostile family members. Immediate mess is on the horizon and Kidan tries to be good, so badly.
Many questions are answered, new plot twists will hit you in the chest and we are left ruined, in a good way! Treat yourself and come along the ride and witness how Kidan becomes the woman she is meant to be.
Thank you to Tigest Girma for giving us more Black Vampires and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers & Netgalley for sending me back for another year at Uxley University.
Omg the twists, turns, secrets, BETRAYALS! This book had me hooked from the first page. This book focuses mostly on Kidan mastering the Adane house, but also the affect June had on her and overcoming it. We get new POVs, the action is legitimately nonstop, and we learn SO much about Kidans parents as well as Susenyos’ history. I loved the relationships that formed within this book and Kidans character growth! In Immortal Dark Kidan was very much impulsive and a somewhat unlikable character, but in Eternal Ruin I was rooting for her at every step. I’m still in disbelief over the reveals and twists and I have so many more questions so I cannot wait for book 3! Thank you so much Little Brown Books for the ARC!
Such a fantastic and long awaited sequel to Immortal Dark! The improvement was very evident from Book 1. I was truly blown away by the well placed plot, characters, and immersive writing style. Tigest is now one of my favorite authors and I will read anything this woman writes. A lot of the questions I previously had about the power dynamics and house systems were definitely addressed in this one. I also enjoyed the new conflicts, complex sibling relationships, rivalries, and the added vampire lore focused on cultural values! I also appreciated how this book focused on identity, loving who you really are, and recognizing the moral cost of vengeance.
The new characters and POVs were a really interesting addition too. Some of the new layers to the plot seemed a bit confusing at first but it made sense later on. The focus on the cost of power was really important because it was integral to Kidan’s character development and the choices she made. She’s the definition of feminine rage and I adore her. The diverse cast of characters was once again very refreshing to see and the dark academia vibes were perfectly balanced with the mystery and betrayals.
In case it wasn’t obvious, I’m still obsessed with Susenyos and Kidan. They both started with such a valid reason of hating each other. The growth in their relationship and their trust in each other was so meaningful and the tension was so satisfying between them. The last time I read such a good “enemies to lovers” was during The Cruel Prince trilogy. All I can say is that Jude and Kidan would be BFFs right away. We learned about Kidan’s history in Book 1 but this book was for Susenyos to shine. We see more of his background and memories, and I truly felt for him. They’re both so well written and I just want them to be happy by the end of this series😭
June…still one the fence about her but she is slowly warming up and I feel like her character could go in either direction. I felt the same with Samson too. The way this book tugged at my emotions was actually crazy because that ending was diabolical. I need Book 3 right now and anything else this author writes in the future.
