Beloved New York Times bestselling author Karen White returns with a brand-new contemporary stand-alone novel about sisterhood, secrets and one woman’s reckoning with the past

As a child, Phoebe Manigault developed the gift of premonition after she was struck by lightning in the creeks near her Charleston home. Plagued throughout her life by mysterious dreams, and always living in the shadow of her beautiful sister, Addie, Phoebe eventually moves to the West Coast, as far from her family as possible. As Phoebe’s return lures her back into deep-rooted tensions and conflicts, she is drawn toward Celeste, whose granddaughter went missing years ago. Their connection, woven through shared losses and hope, brings comfort to Phoebe, while Celeste’s adult grandson Liam resurrects complicated emotions tied to Phoebe’s past.

With more than 2 million books in print in fifteen different languages, Karen White is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 34 novels, including the popular Charleston-set Tradd Street mystery series.

Raised in a house full of brothers, Karen’s love of books and strong female characters first began in the third grade when the local librarian issued her a library card and placed The Secret of the Old Clock, a Nancy Drew Mystery, in her hands.

Karen’s roots run deep in the South where many of her novels are set. Her intricate plot lines and compelling characters charm and captivate readers with just the right mix of family drama, mystery, intrigue and romance.

Not entirely convinced she wanted to be a writer, Karen first pursued a career in business and graduated cum laude with a BS in Management from Tulane University. Ten years later, in a weak moment, she wrote her first book. In the Shadow of the Moon was published in August, 2000. Her books—referred to as “grit lit” (Southern Women’s Fiction)—have since been nominated for numerous national contests including the SIBA (Southeastern Booksellers Alliance) Fiction Book of the Year.

Karen’s next book, THAT LAST CAROLINA SUMMER, will be published by Park Row Books in July, 2025.

When not writing, Karen spends her time reading, scrapbooking, playing piano, and avoiding cooking. Karen and her husband have two grown children and currently live near Atlanta, Georgia with two spoiled Havanese dogs.

I really enjoyed this book. The novel opens with a flashback of Phoebe being struck by lightning as a child. In present time, Phoebe has moved across the country and has separated herself from her family and her past. When her sister calls and demands she come home to take care of their aging mother, Phoebe must open herself up to all that she left behind, including a disturbing, reoccurring dream that she cannot decipher. Their mother is clearly in the early stages of dementia. Her sister is not caring for her mother or her daughter. Phoebe meets Celeste, Will, and Dr. Liam. All who play a part in Phoebe's past, but also a huge part of her present. Great characters that you can relate to. I found myself laughing and crying at times. It is a rollercoaster ride. I highly recommend this great book.

"Beloved New York Times bestselling author Karen White returns with a brand-new contemporary stand-alone novel about sisterhood, secrets, and one woman’s reckoning with the past."

When Phoebe Manigault gets a call from her sister Addie that she needs her help with their mother, she reluctantly leaves the Pacific Northwest to return home to the stunning Lowcountry of South Carolina. Her return brings back unwanted memories of being the outcast daughter who only felt loved by Aunt Sassy. It also brings back her nightmares, which began when she was nine years old and struck by lightning.

Early in her visit, she meets Celeste Finch, whose son Liam saved her life when she was struck by lightning. Their families have a history that links them for decades. She also discovers that the situation with her mother is much worse than she thought. Her sister Addie seems unable to cope with basic daily responsibilities, including the supervision of her nine-year-old daughter Ophelia.

This is a beautiful family drama and mystery with atmospheric writing that transported me to the Lowcountry. There are many thought-provoking parallels to birds, which are seamlessly threaded throughout the novel and added depth as well as the lush natural world of the region. The realities of dementia and caring for aging parents is handled with sensitivity. Themes of sisterhood, guilt, loss, and second chances make this a worthwhile read and especially great to read in the summertime.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing (HTP) - Park Row Books, and Karen White for an advance reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have always enjoyed reading books about sisters, and their pasts. This is a Multi-Generational story full of juicy family drama and secrets. Karen White does a great job of pulling you in with her writing and Southern storytelling. I was hoping for a bit more suspense with the mystery so that was a bit of a let down. Still enjoyed it enough though and happy I read it.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

I recently had the pleasure of reading this book via NetGalley. It follows Phoebe Manigault as she returns home to South Carolina to care for her ailing mother. Home is not where the heart is for Phoebe– growing up, she was the odd one out in a family of pageant-winning mother and daughter and overbearing father, a lawyer who always got his way. While home, she butts heads with her sister Addie, bonds with her niece Ophelia, and befriends Celeste, an older woman whose life is far more intertwined with Phoebe’s than initially perceived. There’s aspects of both magical realism and mystery: Phoebe was struck by lightning when she was nine, giving her what she calls “premonitions,” dreams of events just before they happen; Celeste’s granddaughter Julie went missing when she was eighteen, and Celeste hasn’t given up hope that she may still be out there. The story is told in dual-perspective, alternating between Phoebe and Celeste.
White’s writing really shone in the description of the Carolina lowlands. Having never been to either of the Carolinas, I’ve never actually seen any of its wildlife, but the depictions in the text were beautiful, which balanced well with the more grounded prose elsewhere in the book. White also does an excellent job with Phoebe’s mother’s illness, which is written with painful honesty, at times almost difficult to read.
Some things disappointed me, too. I wish we would’ve had more of a chance to explore Addie outside of the overwhelming negative perception of nearly every character. She was disliked by Phoebe, Celeste, and even acquaintances who only met her once or twice. For a story priding itself on being a tale of sisterhood, I would’ve preferred more care for the main character’s sister. I also found the writing to be at times overly repetitive. Sometimes, the very same passage, sentence, or description would be used time and time again. Some instances could be argued to serve narrative purpose, foreshadowing the book’s ultimate plot twist, but many felt unnecessary. Additionally, I feel that I must note that the plot twist was pretty predictable, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if that’s what you’re looking for.

FULL REVIEW WILL BE ON JULY 22.

Phoebe left home years ago because of family drama and a missing girl, but since her mother is now diagnosed with Alzheimer's she returns home.

The drama still hadn't gone away in all those years, though. In fact, the drama with her sister had gotten worse.

THE LAST CAROLINA SUMMER explores family dynamics, relationships, and facing your past.

Readers who enjoy Ms. White’s book settings and great characters will enjoy this book. 5/5

This was a beautifully told, poignant story about the complications of family, finding one's way, and secrets left untold.

I felt immediately transported to the Carolinas and the beach, and absolutely loved not only the characters but the setting as well. This screamed classic White and her glorious way of being able to tell a story that transports you right into the lives of the characters and makes you feel like you already know and love them.

This is the perfect beach/summer read, and I just can't recommend it enough.

Karen White is one of my go to authors when I'm in need of a great story. What I enjoyed most about THAT LAST CAROLINA SUMMER is that it felt real. It was about family, friendship, mystery, and a touch of romance. Phoebe was my favorite character, she loved birds and in each chapter she references them. She helped everyone, like her mother and her sister Addie. She was also a great aunt. I thought it was neat that their last name was Manigault. If you ever get a chance to visit Charleston, one of my favorite places to visit, you will learn about the real Manigualt family and can even do a house tour. I can't recommend this book enough!

Phoebe was struck by lightning when she was a child. Since then, she’s had premonition dreams. As soon as she could she left home to live across the country to escape the premonitions and family drama. It disappointed her mother that she didn’t care about being a Southern belle like her sister, Addie. Phoebe was more interested in exploring the beaches and marshes, spying birds along the way.

Now Phoebe must return home to help to care for her ailing mother and she has a lot of mixed feelings. Her dreams come back, the most disturbing one back in full force. Old resentments between Phoebe and Addie rise to the surface and her mother’s condition brings all the hurt into sharp focus. I felt bad for Ophelia, Addie’s young daughter.

I had my ideas about the dream. Things made sense as more came to light and I felt for all involved.

In all of this, Phoebe meets Celeste a woman whose granddaughter went missing years ago. Celeste her grandson, Liam and great grandson, Will are all big players in the story as well.

I enjoyed how each chapter opened up with interesting bird facts, how they sometimes related to human behavior. The setting of South Carolina was almost another character, hot, vibrant and mysterious.

That Last Carolina Summer /b>
I alternated between the audio and e-copy. I can recommend either version. Jorjeana Marie did a wonderful job with Phoebe’s chapters, the range of ages, male and female voices and emotions. I thought Kimberly Farr performed Celeste well, age appropriate, but there was little change with other voices making it a little hard to distinguish who was speaking at times. Still, I really enjoyed the audio version!

I voluntarily read/listened to an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.

A beautiful, touching story about family, dreams and how secrets can destroy lives. Phoebe has premonitions ever since she was struck by lightning as a child. Now, as an adult, she has to return to her family and help deal with her mother's worsening dementia. An angry sister and neglected niece make things even more complicated. And the recurrent nightmare she's tried to forget is back, trying to tell her something. I found this very compelling and emotional and I really rooted for these family members to find their way back to one another.

New York Times bestselling author Karen White (a favorite) makes a triumphant return with her latest standalone novel, THAT LAST CAROLINA SUMMER. This captivating multi-generational Southern tale artfully delves into themes of sisterhood, complex family dynamics, the haunting secrets of the past, second chances, and the love of birds, all while incorporating a touch of the supernatural.

About the Book...

Phoebe Manigault, a woman endowed with the extraordinary gift of premonition, a talent that blossomed following a lightning strike near her Charleston home. Throughout her life, Phoebe has been plagued by enigmatic dreams, often overshadowed by the beauty and charisma of her sister, Addie. In search of independence, she relocates to the West Coast, distancing herself from her family's grasp.

However, years later, a call beckons her back to South Carolina to support Addie in caring for their mother, who is suffering from dementia. This unexpected return reconnects her with her roots and the complexities they entail.

Upon her arrival, Phoebe forms a poignant connection with Celeste, a woman whose granddaughter vanished under mysterious circumstances years prior. Their relationship, forged through shared sorrow and hope, provides Phoebe with solace, while Celeste’s adult grandson, Liam, awakens a whirlwind of emotions tied to Phoebe’s past.

As Phoebe confronts her resurfacing nightmares, the intensity of her visions escalates, leading her toward a shocking revelation that has the potential to alter everything irrevocably.

My Thoughts...

THAT LAST CAROLINA SUMMER unfolds as an emotionally rich and enchanting family drama with mystery set against the stunning backdrop of the South Carolina Lowcountry— a setting that feels almost like a character in its own right, alongside the ancestral home.

White, a master storyteller, sets the stage with her lyrical depictions of the Lowcountry. The narrative deeply explores the burdens of dark secrets, examining themes of guilt and tragedy, and their profound effects on families and communities alike.

Phoebe stands out as a compelling character, navigating her unwelcome gift while managing a complicated relationship with her troubled sister, Addie, who struggles to care for their family, including her own daughter, Ophelia. The author skillfully captures the contrasting personalities of the sisters, portraying their tumultuous love/hate dynamic and the traumas of their past that continue to haunt their present lives.

Celeste Finch, whose son Liam once saved Phoebe's life during the lightning strike, adds another layer of connection between the families. The author poignantly illustrates the challenges of caregiving and illness as Phoebe discovers Addie’s inability to care for their mother, compounded by Addie's struggles with her own daughter.

The supernatural premonition dreams lend an intriguing layer of mystery and significance to the narrative. Moreover, the unresolved mystery from seventeen years ago serves as a connective thread that intertwines the characters’ lives.

I particularly appreciated the creative incorporation of birds and their behaviors at the beginning of each chapter, accompanied by beautiful quotes that enrich the narrative with symbolism and metaphors resonating throughout the storyline.

"A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on her own wings." —Anonymous

Recommendations...

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. I had high hopes going into this book, but the execution fell flat. The characters felt unrelatable and lacked depth, which made it hard to connect with or root for any of them. Additionally, the dialogue often came across as unnatural or stilted. The plot was also highly predictable, with few—if any—surprises along the way.

Southern legend Karen White returns to her roots with an impeccably well-written story exploring the struggles of sisterhood, mother-daughter dynamics, and the long-hidden secrets that can both bind and break a family. Phoebe and Addie are forced to confront their painful past and strained relationship when their mother’s battle with dementia worsens.

As Phoebe returns home after some time away, old wounds resurface alongside memories of a summer that changed everything. White masterfully explores the emotional toll of dementia on the family, painting a tender yet unflinching portrait of love, loss, and resilience. The sisters must navigate their shared history, buried truths, and the devastating effects of illness while rediscovering what it means to forgive and reconnect.

Despite the heavy themes, the story flows beautifully across its 350 pages, balancing heartache with moments of hope and warmth. Karen White’s vivid descriptions and rich character development draw you into the South’s charm and complexities. Bring your tissues, folks- Karen’s going to make you cry this summer. This is a must-read for anyone who loves a deeply moving family drama with all the feels.

Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC! That Last Carolina Summer by Kristina McBride is an enchanting and emotionally resonant read that takes you straight to the warm, breezy shores of South Carolina. I’d give it four stars for its perfect blend of lighthearted moments, poignant reflections, and memorable characters. The story revolves around Emma Harper, a twenty-something who returns to her hometown on Pawleys Island for one last summer before she heads off on a new adventure. Emma’s been feeling stuck in her life—working a job she doesn’t love and navigating the complexities of her family relationships. Her summer plans suddenly turn into something more meaningful when she reconnects with her childhood best friend, Lucas, whose charming smile and easygoing nature make her heart flutter. Throughout the summer, Emma and Lucas share countless small adventures: exploring tide pools at dawn, trying their hand at paddleboarding, and late-night walks along the beach under a sky full of stars. Emma also spends time with her colorful family—her grandmother, who owns the local bookstore with stories of her own, and her younger sister, who’s full of youthful optimism and dreams of her own. What makes this book stand out are the tender moments and honest reflections woven into the sunny days. Emma grapples with choices about her future, fears of leaving behind her childhood home, and the bittersweet feeling that comes with growing up. Meanwhile, Lucas quietly reveals his own hopes and struggles, adding depth to their blossoming friendship and potential romance. Kristina McBride’s writing captures the charm of the Carolina coast, from the salty air to the vibrant sunsets, making every scene feel alive and inviting. The story has a delightful balance—fun and playful at times, melancholy and moving at others—that kept me turning the pages with a warm smile. That Last Carolina Summer is a lovely reminder to cherish the simple pleasures, reconnect with old friends, and embrace change with an open heart. It’s a sweet, sun-soaked read that leaves you feeling hopeful and a little nostalgic for your own summers of discovery.

Okay.

For a moment, let’s ignore the fact that she literally named characters after Andrew Jackson, and some of her parental wisdom made me cringe.

Instead, let’s focus on the fact that after two books I found incredibly disappointing, I should have loved this one since it’s basically combining elements from the three books of hers I really enjoyed.

Like the relationship between Ophelia and Elizabeth? Then you’ll love the relationship between Becky & Birdie from ‘Flight Patterns’.

Love the friendship between the precocious children? You’ll love the kids in ‘The Sound of Glass’.

Big fan of a handsome southern doctor as the love interest? Meet Gibbs from ‘The Sound of Glass’. He’s like Liam, but better.

A mother with dementia/memory problems guarding family secrets? You’ll love Birdie from ‘Flight Patterns’ and Carol Lynne from ‘A Long Time Gone’.

Toxic diet culture? Hi, ‘A Long Time Gone’.

Like the wisdom from birds that Phoebe shares? Well, you’ll love the bee wisdom from ‘Flight Patterns’. Especially starting each chapter with a quote about the little flying things…

Insert Taylor Swift: “I think I’ve seen this film before…”

And finally - enjoy the close niece/aunt relationship? Well, once again, you’d love ‘Flight Patterns’.

Now for the actual book. Such a disappointment.

I liked Phoebe well enough, but she was boring. Unlike other KW heroines, nothing about her stood out. Her dreams could have been interesting, but they weren’t fleshed out well.

The “relationship” with Liam is poorly done. Other than going to a BSB concert 🙄 & out to dinner, they don’t spend much time together, and their entire relationship seems based on one extreme incident when they were young, instead of actually getting to know one another or any meaningful connection.

Celeste was lovely, but GD, grow a backbone.

Addie was obnoxious. I get that she’s troubled, but she doesn’t seem to make any attempt at making things right. She’s an inattentive mother, and seems more concerned with punishing herself than taking care of her daughter (and mother).

Elizabeth was the one character I found significant. She wasn’t exactly likable, but you understood her. You sympathized with her. And you appreciated that even though she may not have been the best mother, at least she tried.

And now back to naming a child Andrew Jackson ______ (I can’t remember the last name) III. And I guess she technically named two characters after the shitty President, since the child’s father is technically AJX II. Phoebe’s old high school friend introduced her son with his full name, only to refer to him as Drew any other time he’s mentioned. So, why not just give him a different name?

And can Karen White please stop with the obsession with lipstick? I grew up in the south. I lived in the south until I was 27. And I never knew anyone so GD focused on coral lipstick.

This book follows Phoebe who is returning home to South Carolina to help her sister care for their mother as her health has taken a turn. She has a complicated relationship with both her mother and her sister that makes coming home difficult.

When Phoebe was younger she was struck by lightning and developed the gift of premonition. Once she is home she begins to have a recurring nightmare again that is still vague and that she is struggling to make sense of.

Phoebe has also befriended an older woman, Celeste, who is the grandmother of the boy who saved her life as a child. Celeste’s granddaughter went missing back then also and she is hopeful that Phoebe could have a vision to help find out what happened to her.

I think I would have rated this one a bit higher, however I guessed the ending pretty early on and it just felt a little slow after that.

This is my first book by the author, and I’m very happy to say that I really enjoyed it! I loved the South Carolina lowcountry setting, it’s become a real favorite of mine.

Phoebe Manigault returns to her childhood home to help her sister Addie care for their ailing mother. She becomes friends with an elderly woman, Celeste, whose granddaughter Julie mysteriously disappeared decades earlier. She is also drawn to Celeste’s grandson, Liam, who brings back memories from her past.

Highlights |
•Complicated sister/family relationships
•Mild family drama
•Secrets
•Dementia
•Coming home
•Mysterious dreams
•Interesting facts about birds

I really enjoyed the beautiful descriptions in this book. It was at times gentle and tender, and full of tension and high emotions in others. The ending builds to a particularly dramatic climax.

Thank you to HTP Books/Park Row Books for providing me with a gifted ebook copy of That Last Carolina Summer through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

When Phoebe Manigault was struck by lightning as a child, at her South Carolina home, she developed the gift of premonition through her dreams. Growing up, Phoebe struggled with this gift and with being in the shadow of her older sister Addie. After graduating high school, Phoebe moved to Oregon, to get as far away as possible from her family and her dreams. Now, after all of these years Phoebe’s sister pleads for her to return home and help with their mother who has been showing signs of dementia. Home is the last place Phoebe wants to be, and she soon realizes she is not only caring for her sick mother, but also a self-destructive, irresponsible Addie, and her nine year old niece who is neglected by her mother. Phoebe’s plan is to get everything settled and organized for her mother’s care, so she can return to Oregon, but her renewed dreams and a friendship with a family from her past make it harder and harder to resist the urge to once again escape the hold of South Carolina.

That Last Carolina Summer is a beautiful, heartbreaking story of the messy, emotional layers that make up family connections. I thought White’s writing was beautiful and descriptive, and she really drew me into the Lowcountry setting of South Carolina. I also really enjoyed the way that she began each chapter with a bird excerpt, that tied in with Phoebe’s love of nature and the time she spent learning from her Aunt Sassy. I always love multiple POV stories, and it worked well here, with chapters from Phoebe and Celeste, giving the reader a look into the past while connecting the present of the Manigault and Fitch families.

The book deals with heavy subject matter, including caring for a loved one who is experiencing dementia, physical abuse, an unsolved disappearance, and strained family relationships. White does a great job handling all of these issues, and her writing definitely evokes a wide range of emotions from the reader. I did feel like some parts of the story got a bit repetitive, and I would have liked to see that time given over to the book’s conclusion and lending to a more in depth resolution for each of the characters storylines.

If you love family drama stories, with a touch of mystery, romance, second chances, complex characters, and an immersive Southern setting, then I would definitely recommend That Last Carolina Summer.

Southern fiction at its best, plenty of drama with a bit of mystery thrown in. I appreciated that the subject of Alzheimer's was handled with compassion and honesty. I did figure out the plot twist well before the reveal, but it didn't take away from the development of the family dynamics.

In true Karen White fashion, another captivating story of family with the memories and resentments that mold us and hopefully let us connect and grow. When a small girl, Phoebe was hit by lightning and luckily saved by a neighbor boy. Twenty five years later and living across the country from her Charleston area home, she is summoned home by her estranged sister to help with her mother's care. Threaded throughout the story are the premonitions she has had ever since the lightning strike and a cold case mystery of a missing girl. Highly recommend. Phoebe has been called back home by her sister, Addie. Their mother is experiencing Alzheimers symptoms and Addie just can’t handle it. Phoebe is determined to only stay the summer. She does not want to revisit her past. It comes with nightmares!

I enjoyed Phoebe. I loved her “visions”. After she was struck by lightning as a young girl, she has been able to “sort of” see the future through her dreams. I love a book with a bit of mysticism. It always adds to the drama!

The animosity between these sisters is so real! I could just feel it oozing off the page. Phoebe and Addie are like oil and water. But, they also have each other’s backs! And with this twist at the end, they really do need each other.

Y’all, this book is about family dynamics, pain, grief and healing. It is about being there for someone. And it is about love…and hate! It is a book you do not want to miss.

Now, the narrators, Jorjeana Marie and Kimberly Farr, are not my favorite. The voices are a bit too soft. But, this novel is so well written, it did not matter.

Need a fabulous, healing, family drama…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

That Last Carolina Summer by Karen White
I have been hooked on her books since around 2012 when I read The Beach Trees. She used to have on come out ever summer. As with all of Karen White’s books, it has a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, history, drama, etc. They are usually a little deeper than your typical "beach read/hallmark type book".

I was lucky enough to hear her speak in June 2013 at Octavia Books in New Orleans. She is a Tulane Alum and several of her books take place in NOLA. For the book talk, she talked about her college and Chi Omega days. It was interesting to hear the research that she puts into her books. This is her first stand alone book in several years. Her last few series of books was about a ghost in New Orleans which I have not read.

That Last Carolina Summer comes out on Tuesday, July 21st. One of my friends, Laura, picked up an ARC (advanced reading copy) for me at the ALA convention in Philly a weeks ago. One of the things that I really liked in it is that the main character, Phoebe, is into birding. She write a blog about birds. Each chapter begins with a bird fact from the blog and it will relate to something happening in that chapter. Of course since I am into birding, I loved this! One of the topics in the book is that the two sisters are having to care for their elderly mother who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's which I have several friends who are having to take care of a parent with this.

The book was a fast read book that I finished in two day. Like her previous books it has a little bit of everything in it. I am still thinking of the characters in it. Five Stars...

I enjoyed this story about sisters, secrets and estrangement. It gave beautiful descriptions of the Low country, South Carolina. The bird facts to begin each chapter was a lovely bonus. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
