Past Life Hero #2

Past Life Hero 2

Rate this book
Max’s life has gotten complicated, strange, but also undeniably exciting after he joined the Quartet system.

Reclaiming some Blade Sorcerer power from his past life, and also training in a new style of magic, bonding with and utilizing spirits, has led to some very interesting synergies. He’d even managed to make some unlikely friends.

However, overshadowing everything is the very real fact that while students in the Quartet train, their home worlds suffer. This includes Max. Earth is still in danger, still desperately needing its Challengers to return.

Unfortunately, the more Max has learned about the Quartet system, the more rot he has discovered. And certain individuals in his Quartet already scheme against him.

But Max is playing a different game than everyone else. He will also learn a few very dangerous secrets. Also, an unprecedented opportunity to return to Earth for a quick visit may yield some interesting opportunities as well.

But with new opportunities comes new dangers, new enemies. Maintaining his freedom while following the rules will become even more difficult, and the Quartet is still the best place for Max to continue growing in power.

…Right?

Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.

He currently lives in Texas, in a house full of enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.

He likes talking about himself in 3rd person and posting pictures of himself holding tarantulas. Sometimes, he pretends he is not an idiot with a terrible sense of humor.

It's all very eccentric.

Blaise currently writes mostly in the GameLit genre and LitRPG subgenre, exciting new classifications of fiction where characters either play a game (usually VR), or live in a world with game-like elements.

Delvers LLC is GameLit, lightly LitRPG, mostly a Fantasy/SciFi Adventure. Secret of the Old Ones is hard LitRPG, complete with XP and leveling...plus has Lovecraftian and steampunk elements (because why not?).

MC becomes a bit of a jerk
Ret-con merry-go-round where the entire premise keeps getting yanked out from under you.
It makes sense that with more power comes less empathy, and the MC is getting pushed around in an ever escalating game. But being an A-hole to people who never did you wrong is making me like the MC a lot less. One of the points of bullying is to socially isolate the victim and that's at work here. (also the author doesn't have to keep inventing fake content if the MC stops going to class)
It's still good... but less enjoyable due to it getting pointlessly dark -unless this is information relevant to all 3 series.
Once again, I'm just waiting to get back to JAKE and Apocalypse Cultivation
But should I hope? Will there ever be another Delvers?

--Reread 6 months later--
Yeah, the MC Max becomes a douchebag and there is no good reason or point to it. Even his friends stop cheering for him and walk away. This doesn't make him seem though or strong, it shows he's becoming a sociopath. The story suffers and the book isn't as good, because I just can't like the guy as much. I have stopped cheering as well, and want to distance myself from him. The last quarter of the book left me with an uncomfortable feeling that wasn't nice. The fantasy world here is getting weaker and diminishing. We meet remnants of the past who are are fading away and dying. It was just unnecessarily sad . What ever Blaise was aiming for, I fear he missed it and just made me care less in a dying world where the hero can't win.

Interesting
Unpredictable iand a bit inexplicable.

This work is appropriate for young adults and above while having foul language and acts of violence. Random f-bombs. As the second book of the series, it has more romance. Or at least relationships humor action and intrigue.

While the world building is pretty good and the characters seem to be well-rounded. The plot is a bit everywhere. Looking at a current update on Royal road, it seems like the author does it own purpose. To be honest, the story does have the Royal road feel and pacing of a run-on-story with filler parts. At same time, it does keep you interested chapter by chapter.

The unpredictable plot movements did leave me confuse a bit. I wasn't sure where the story was going and could not anticipate what would happen next. In the end of the second book, it felt like we were getting prepared from this book and the the previous one for a certain type of book 3. The author decision in the last few chapters almost felt as if he lied to the reader with all the time in details, he spent pointing to the direction. The story was going only for it to feel as if he said. ,”na I changed my mind.”

That being said, I still feel as if the story is solid i just wasn't expecting it to take the turn it did. I do look forward to reading book 3. And i hope that even if the unexpected happens, it is not inexplicable..

Max proves very unpleasant to spend time with in this book. He’s not a fun or funny person, and he treats his ‘friends’ like disposable tools so there’s nothing to root for there either. In the first book you could see he was in bad circumstances, but in this one he’s showered with rewards and items (at one point he’s complaining that he literally has more than he can carry) and he’s still pulling his sociopathic edgelord shit. The writing is decent and the worldbuilding is interesting, but at the end of the book when they were setting up the next one - you know, like in ‘Quantum Leap’? “Looks like you’ve jumped into the body of a magical shithead, Sam!” “Oh boy…” - I felt a horrible dread at the idea of being stuck with Max while he struts about slicing people up and mumbling about how edgy he is. I hope you sit on a tack, Max. And your fly’s been open this whole time, you idiot!

Dear Lord. How many times do I have to endure "a two star mana body"? It's getting ridiculous, and I'm not even a quarter of the way through the book.

Hmm. There were some name drops of authors/ series as weapons. I wonder what I missed.

What the actual hell? First the term "star mana body" is constantly repeated like this is some cheap, poorly machine translated Chinese webnovel. Then the author goes and pulls that cliffhanger ending out his ass.

Seems the author need a better editor. Still enjoyed the story by the end.

Will pick up the sequel.

I do recommend the series

Here I am at the ending of the book and willing to recommend it. The audio came out the same time as the ebook but as this is a new series I wasn't really interested in buying in just yet. I personally prefer the audio to the ebooks as I can do other things while listening. I have Kindle unlimited which allows me to check out new series before fully committing. I have enjoyed the story so far and the sequel to this one is scheduled for an April release. In this entry her main character is dealing with a vast conspiracy that spans the Galaxy over a significant amount of time with ultra powerful people and groups. We've only just taken a glimpse at it and there's no telling where this will lead. Certainly in the short term our main character faces assassination and is worried for the well-being of his friends. There is some romance in this book and hints that there may be more in the sequels. I think the author is a phenomenal writer. I will admit though that if I have one criticism it's that when I started the series I thought I was getting one kind of story and that's not what I ended up with. I started reading sponsored apocalypse at approximately the same time as this one which is also by the same author. The character starts in one place as the story builds and then a suddenly off in a completely different location with different characters doing different things. Perhaps as the serious matures it'll all be tied in together and my opinion will be that this is the greatest story the author has ever told, but at least in the early days with only the first two books out it's not something that I really like or expected. It comes off a little bit like a bait and switch. This is past life hero, sponsored apocalypse, and his cultivator series follow the pattern of apocalypse with cast and our main character on Earth only for the main character to be drawn away to another place, with another cast, and other issues thus leaving a lot of open story lines with few conclusions in the first two books.

Wow! Soooooooo! Hella! Great! I loved every mesmerizing minute of this pedal-to-the-metal litRPG adventure! Blase Corwin along with John Skelley cranked it up all the way to 11! Max landed in the academy with both feet firmly planted! He's ready to make the most of what he's got and even if that means that he has'ta make a deal with the Headmaster for something mutually beneficial for both of them, he will! A part of that deal included free access to dungeon dives, but that didn't go as planned, instead of ending up in a level 1 goblin dungeon, he found himself trapped in a level 5 giant dungeon with plenty of other monsters to boot... but with careful planning and his Spirit Beasts help he takes the chance! Beasts not really more like Beastly Companions! And man, do I love dungeon diving, and Spirit Companions. Turns out Max's Spirit Companions are awesome!
So yeah grab this audiobook a enjoy!

Hey here's a couple of quotes:

"What is all this fuss mortals make about relationships? Why are relationships even necessary when there are beautiful bones to play with? Bones never lie."

"Experimental Weapon: Blackmist Incident of Actus. A rare example of a weapon other than an axe forged by the mysterious master smith only known as First Defier."

decent follow up

Well, I enjoyed the novel, and similarly for the first book in the series, I thought that for a progression fantasy novel, there wasn’t enough detail about how exactly the main character uses his powers/the exact detail details behind the science of the magic, per se. I wish the author paid a little bit more attention to that to make the reader feel more immersed and more involved in the story. Another area of improvement/suggestion would be that there was way too many points where I felt the main character encountered the perfect set of circumstances that allowed him to overcome a particular setback or problem, more than I typically see in a novel in this genre. Otherwise, I enjoyed the novel and I’ll continue to follow once the next book in the series comes out.

There is a lot to like in this Slice of Life story.
I think that this is the best written of all of Mr. Corvin's work.

1. There is no massive Big Bad that the hero alone must conquer. I hate books like that.
2. I hate altruistic characters who feel the need to save the world. This protagonist saves his family and friends, first. That, I can buy into.
3. The character is wandering in a general direction, working towards a loose goal. This is much better than following a yellow brick road with a childish "quest" (to once again save a world that does not deserve saving). He takes care of his friends and family. Everyone else can go to H*ll. :-)

This (so, far) is my kind of book. Heroes are immature idiots. "Real" characters focus on self interest before all else.

Better, but off-paced

Definitely a better head of steam than the first book. Plot progression is nice, and character development is lock step with the book, even if the OP levels of the MC are starting to kick into high gear.

Pacing is all kind of weird though. I mean, why have a 7 year school if you're barely going to be there at all? Without going into spoilers, it basically felt like the author felt like there wasn't enough dramatic tension to carry the school plot for the whole 7 years and abandoned ship. Also, the book had some decent twists and turns, but the twists were a little more predictable and less twisty.

Thay being said, it was still highly entertaining, good action sequences and looks to still have good potential for the future. On to the next one!

More Max adventures

Alternate universe, LitRPG magic cultivation, quest to the world, survival, ftb relationships

Max survives the dungeon he had been tricked into visiting, and makes good on what earned. He learns a bit more about the Quartet and gets a glimpse of the powers that run everything behind the scenes. Anything more might diminish the pleasure of reading this book for yourself. If you haven't read book 1, start there first!

Excellent editing. 481 pages of story. Enjoyed, and ready for book 3. Or, frankly, a sequel to one of the author's series as well.

Good story but not a fan of conspiracies behind the scenes

The characters are good the action is good but when stories add unnecessary complexity hidden behind the scenes waiting to pop up, I tend to lose interest. Maybe I’m too straightforward in the stories I like, I also tend to drop TV shows that have hidden aspects that are hinted at, making characters doubt themselves or the company they work for. The Quartet isn’t straightforward as Max is finding out, and I hope Max unravels what is what soon so we can get back to some good story telling.

apparently ,Dating (casual and limited sexual pumping) is multi universal and multi dimensional across all civilizations and time eras.Dating ,which was invented like 50 years ago in bumfuck ohio is a truly ascended concept across all time and space

and that is why our Reincarnated and later Isakied (yeah, both) protagonists spends half of the book about surviving the apocalypse doing and being teased about and discussing (yeah,a grown ass humanoid is being teased and tongue stucked at)

Story remains engaging...

The story is entertaining and captivating still. The downside that I'm running into, and the reason I've lowered my rating, is the convenient timeframe that everything occurs to the MC to allow for struggles to be overcome, the way all plans seem to just work out fine, and the serious lack of proofreading (not just simple typos and grammar issues, but plot holes too).

excellent book

This has been one of the best series I have the pleasure of listening to. I am now looking forward to the third book sadly it won’t come out for a while. But the action, the roller coaster of plots and backstabbing and drama kept me on edge from start to beginning. I do hope the main character does find someone to love and be with.

You never know what's coming next

Yeh, I think that's one of the things I really enjoy about this series - every time I think I know what's young to happen....something else gets in the way it's changes things. All in the best way, though! This was a fun read and I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

Excellent read.

Excellent series with plenty of twists on several familiar storylines. Could hardly put the books down. Absolutely worth the read if you like isikai, sword and sorcery, magical/portal apocalypse, summoning/spiritual magic, lots of action and intrigue then you need to read this.

Five star read for a Three Star Hero

The problems and dangers at the Summoner Academy continue to increase. We find out that the entire Academy system is designed to create and empower magical warriors but not for the benefit of their home worlds.

Complex

This author has added numerous story layers together. It’s interesting but complex. The magic system is different with lots of potential variety. Just when you think the story line is going in one direction it twists around.

Conspiracies Abound!

The more of the storyline you read, the more conspiracies and madness you uncover. It seems the longer an institution exists, the more corruption creaps in. Enjoy the fun!
