“This taut, suspenseful mystery goes beyond the cemetery gate and settles, creaking, into our very bones.” – Silvia Acevedo, author of the award-winning God Awful series.

When the police rule her dad’s death an accidental overdose, 16-year-old Chloe refuses to believe it and vows to find his killer. Alone against a potentially corrupt, small-town police force, a persistent social worker seeking proof that she has adult supervision, and precariously low funds, Chloe learns that her dad’s life as a cemetery caretaker masked a web of family secrets that quite possibly led to his death—and are now putting her in mortal danger.

Needing freedom to investigate, Chloe pretends that her only surviving relative, a famous war correspondent, has returned from an overseas assignment to be her guardian. But living alone in the caretaker’s house in the middle of the cemetery, mere feet from the crime scene, puts Chloe’s nerves on edge even before she unearths clues about the shadowy side of her small town. Help comes from unlikely and surprising allies: the colorful owner of the local retro diner, the quiet new classmate with his near-perfect memory, and a spirit who visits in her moments of greatest need.

But as Chloe gets closer to the truth, someone else is getting closer to Chloe, watching her every move. And when her aunt turns up on international news reporting from a war zone, Chloe’s cover is blown. Now the race is on to reveal her dad’s killer—but perhaps—Chloe isn’t as alone as she thought.

Valerie Biel has excelled herself in this brilliant story. The graphics on the front cover are just so appropriate and fitting. This tells the story of 16 year old Chloe who lives with her dad Dean who is the cemetery caretaker and they live on site. Chloe wakes in the middle of the night after hearing a wailing/howling noise. She realises Dean is not in the house so goes to investigate and finds Dean slumped unresponsive against a headstone with a hyperdermic syringe hanging out of his arm. By the time the emergency services arrive and take Dean to hospital, he is pronounced dead on arrival. As Chloe's mum 'died' when she was very young, the only family she has is her auntie Maggie, Dean's sister but she is unreachable due to being a news reporter and is on an assignment without her phone. When a social worker arrives and mentions Chloe going into temporary foster care until Maggie can get back Chloe is horrified and calls her best friend, Emma Phillips instead and her parents agree to take Chloe until Maggie can get there. Mr and Mrs Phillips and Emma take Chloe back to their house but Chloe hears them talking and the Phillips' along with the police and most of their small town in Wisconsin believe that it was just a normal drug overdose but Chloe is adamant her dad didn't do drugs and that foul play is involved and Dean was murdered. She sees the looks on the faces of Mr and Mrs Phillips faces every time she says this as if she is just a delusional child in denial. Even Emma is also starting to believe everyone else but Chloe so Chloe devises a plan and starts putting her plans in motion. She leaves the Phillips' house and leaves Emma a message that auntie Maggie has arrived to help look after her. Truth be told Chloe has decided in order to attempt to find out what actually happened to her dad that she needs to be living at her house to be nearer the scene and if, whoever murdered her dad has a reason to return. At every opportunity Chloe airs her theory to anyone that listens that no way was Dean a drug addict so she starts her own unofficial investigation. Chief Barnett tells her she needs to stop digging and to be careful but Chloe continues to find discrepancies in the police investigations. At school, Chloe has a chem lab partner, Jarvis who rarely interacts with her and just works alongside her in chemistry. Following the loss of Dean, Jarvis starts to take notice of Chloe's behaviour and Jarvis turns out to be an unusual ally who starts to help Chloe and becomes very protective of Chloe and helping her at every opportunity as he just so happens to be exceptionally talented in hacking into confidential and sensitive information regarding all aspects surrounding Dean's death and Chloe is convinced she is being watched and followed. Chloe has to also keep up the facade that Maggie is looking after her but discovers Dean's bank account has been emptied out and the emergency stash tin is empty too but she still needs to eat without drawing unnecessary attention from adults around her so she sees a staff wanted sign for a waitress at Molly Bell's diner. After a disastrous first shift and Chloe thinking she's blown it, Molly tells her she has the job and to return the following evening. A new customer, Candi starts to come to eat at Molly's every evening and ensuring that she interacts with Chloe on her visits. Jarvis also makes sure he is at the diner every evening by closing time so that he can walk Chloe home and make sure she's safe as they are unravelling more and more inconsistencies with Dean's fatal 'drug overdose'. Chloe actually keeps the facade up around all the adults until one evening while she's working there is a news broadcast showing on the diner television being presented by auntie Maggie - live in Istanbul as a bomb explodes! Chloe literally runs from the diner distraught and convinced that her only other family member is also dead. Chloe also has to move out of her home - with nowhere to go as a new caretaker has been given the job and the house comes with it. After being honest about everything with Molly, she also turns out to be an unexpected ally who genuinely cares for Chloe and helps Chloe and Jarvis pack up hers and Dean's belongings but Molly and Jarvis find things that are enough to turn her already devastating life upside down. Has Chloe's life been a lie? How could Dean have lied and kept so much from her? Has her imaginary friend/guardian angel Leb only been a figment of her imagination or is there more to it? Definitely a can't put it down thriller that Valerie Biel has covered so many aspects of life and how not everything is as it seems from the outside looking in.

Chloe Cowyn is a 16-year-old living with her father Dean, a cemetery caretaker, in the caretaker’s house in “Beyond the Cemetery Gate: The Secret Keeper’s Daughter” by Valerie Biel. After years of living among the tombstones, she has gotten used to the atmosphere and things that go bump in the night, but nothing prepared her for waking up with an uneasy feeling. She goes looking for her father and to her horror, finds him outside and unresponsive near a ceramic statue.

Due to the circumstances surrounding his death, the police rule it an accidental overdose but Chloe refuses to accept this. She knows her father was not a drug user and is determined to find the truth, but she lives in a small town and doesn’t fully trust that the police are investigating the case or have her best interest at heart.

Her only surviving relative is her aunt Maggie Gill, a journalist, but she is overseas on assignment and can’t be reached for weeks. Pressured to prove that she has a guardian, she lies and pretends Maggie is back in town. Now she has her hands full with school, avoiding the social worker, juggling a part-time job waitressing at the local diner, and looking into her dad’s murder. Helping her are Jarvis, a school friend, and Molly, her boss at the diner.

Unbeknownst to her, someone is lurking in the shadows watching her every move. Her investigation soon uncovers a myriad of family secrets that not only put her life in danger but threaten to upend everything she ever knew about her father and her past.

Life hasn’t been easy for Chloe. As a toddler, she survived a house fire that killed her mother and left her physically and emotionally scarred. In “Beyond the Cemetery Gate,” a teen/YA novel and part of the Chloe & Maggie Mysteries series, Biel introduces readers to a teenage girl determined to find her father’s killer while struggling to survive alone amidst insurmountable odds.

Set against the eerie background of the local cemetery, the novel follows Chloe’s journey as she is thrust into a world where past and present collide in unexpected ways. She’s still a minor, but old enough to get a job when money becomes scarce. Her faith in her father is strong but starts to waver as she learns a different version of her past. With Maggie still unaccounted for and Chloe running out of options, she learns to trust her friends as they work together to get to the truth, regardless of how painful it seems.

As a fan of mysteries and crime fiction, I was drawn to this novel because of the concept of a young girl trying to solve the mystery of her father’s death. Everyone tells her it was an overdose, but she knows deep in her heart that it was murder and is determined to prove them wrong despite the consequences. I was hooked right from the start when in Chapter 1, a sound wakes her up and her gut tells her there’s something wrong even before she steps out of the house. The creepiness factor intensifies as she hears voices and sees a light outside:

A wail pierced the silence. An animal in pain? Only it wasn’t. I knew it was human.

Her life changed in an instant and I wanted to keep reading to find out how her father died.

This young adult novel blends mystery, suspense, crime fiction, and family drama. Even though the narrative is non-linear, it is dialogue-driven, and the Chloe chapters are in a first-person point of view, which provides an insight into her inner thoughts. The characters, particularly Chloe, are well-developed, showcasing growth and depth as they navigate the challenges of a growing mystery. She is a strong, resourceful, and fearless character who trusts her instincts to guide her even if she has to be deceitful at times. Biel’s writing is engaging, with vivid descriptions that bring the story to life:

The trees rustled in the breeze as more and more leaves let loose and floated downward.

Overall, “Beyond the Cemetery Gate” is a mystery/crime novel and a thoughtful exploration of personal growth. With emotional depth and the themes of death, friendship, and identity, this is a standout in the genre. The pacing is well-managed, keeping readers hooked with a steady stream of revelations, secrets, and suspense. It is a must-read and recommended for fans of mysteries looking for a gripping and compelling story.

I tried so hard not to think about my dad being gone forever, but the times that those thoughts slipped past my focus on finding his killer were like the shock of jumping into a too-cold lake. I would double over in pain and gasp for breath.

This was my first time reading a book by author Valerie Biel. Actually, it was the first I had heard of this author. Beyond The Cemetery Gate is a mystery that grabbed my attention just by the title alone. Who doesn’t like reading about cemeteries? But once I got started, the storyline just kept me reading late into the night. I had a really hard time setting my kindle down. The authors writing flowed so smoothly that I found it really easy and quick to read. One thing I really liked was the short chapters. Chloe, the main character, is a young student in high school who lives in the caretakers house in the middle of the cemetery with her father. Her father is a really nice guy that sticks primarily to himself and as you read you learn that he is keeping a lot of secrets. One night Chloe hears something outside in the cemetery and when she goes to investigate, she stumbles upon her father’s dead body. This is when the story gets interesting and dangerously scary. Chloe feeling all alone takes it upon herself to investigate her father’s murder and by doing so she unearths a ton of secrets. Secrets about her past life, a life she doesn’t really remember much about. This was a really good story and it’s one I’ll be recommending to other readers. I really liked a lot of the characters and I was happy to learn that the author is going to be writing a mystery series about these same characters. I’ll be looking for those books when they get published. I’d like to thank NetGalley for the arc that I believe I found on the Read Now section. I’m giving this book a 5 star rating and look forward to reading more by Valerie Biel in the near future!

A taught YA mystery that is in a sub-genre I especially like: the average person thrown into a frantic situation for which they are totally unprepared. When Chloe Cowyn's father dies from an apparent drug overdose, Chloe doesn't believe it. Yet no one, especially the police, are interested in following up on her suspicions.

This sends Chloe on a frantic mission to first of all survive with no help from anyone in the family or any adults in town, and then investigate her father's death the best she can so she can prove to someone, especially the police, that they should look for a killer.

Resourcefulness is Chloe's strongpoint as she finds a job, a place to live after she is required to move out of her house, and stave off the social worker and other officials who are all to ready to put her into foster care. She does a good job of pretending to be her aunt, her only apparent relative and presumed guardian now that her father is dead.

Adding to the mix is the POV of "the watcher," someone whose interest in Chloe is far beyond casual. Biel teases us with hints of who the watcher might be, but we don't confirm the watcher's identity until near the end.

There are some nice subplots and strong supporting characters in this story that add depth and interest to the main plot: Mollie--the diner owner who hired Chloe; Emma, Chloe's best friend and cross-country teammate, and Jarvis, the nerdy boy who helps Chloe solve the mystery and obviously is attracted to her; and Chief Barnett, the police chief who may or may not be on Chloe's side when it comes to investigating her dad's death.

All the threads are woven together and fit nicely into the ending of the book. It's "slightly" predictable who the watcher is (I had a hunch early on that proved to be correct--lucky me), but we aren't 100% sure until near the end.

There are also some clever twists at the end which will surprise readers but work well to finish the story.

Beyond a Young Adult read!

Author Valerie Biel’s novel opens with a gripping murder, and the spooky graveyard backdrop quickly had me buried in the action.

Underlying themes worked well to pull the plot together. Starting right out of the gate with the 16-year-old heroine, Chloe, being on the high school varsity track team, the pace never slows. Her father, aptly named Dean, also had trained her to be a fast thinker beyond her years.

Chloe never misses a step, or a clue, her endurance enabling her to stay ahead of the police tracking the killer, even as they seem to have closed the case.

I hope this is the start of a new series!

This story is an exciting mystery that follows a teenager on a mission to discover the truth about her father's death, which the police have labeled as an accidental overdose. Sixteen-year-old Chloe is convinced that there’s more to the situation and bravely embarks on her quest for answers. Residing alone in her father's caretaker house located in a small-town cemetery, she faces obstacles from a potentially corrupt police department and her tight budget. Biel, skillfully depicts Chloe as both strong and vulnerable, making her a character readers can connect with. The story unfolds at a fast pace, packed with unexpected twists. Chloe receives support from unique characters, including a quirky diner owner and a quiet new classmate who has an impressive memory. Additionally, a spirit appears during her toughest times, adding an extra layer of depth and mystery to her adventure. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves young adult mysteries or a well-crafted suspenseful tale. This was my first book by Valerie Biel, but after this book it won’t be my last. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Thank you to Valerie for the gifted copy to read and review.

This mystery for young readers starts out with immediate action, the murder of Chloe's father. The sixteen year old soon faces serious problems as the police do not believe it is murder. Her problems get worse when her aunt is out of communication and social service officials demand she be in the care of a relative or go to foster care.

I was impressed with Chloe's resourcefulness, even if some of it was rather sneaky and maybe illegal. Biel provides great secondary characters to help Chloe. I like her chemistry lab partner, Jarvis, and his being willing to help her. He was a reserved but intelligent young man and a great side kick for Chloe. And Molly, the cafe owner. What a compassionate woman.

The writing style is good as is the pace of the plot. There are scenes that go back in time to heighten the mystery. We have hints of a villain or other mysterious person on the scene too. The only part of this youth novel I did not like was the vulgar language some of the characters expressed.

This is a good youth mystery centering on a very resourceful young woman. I recommend it.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

MY THOUGHTS -
I just cannot tell you how much I loved this book. You know how different books just click with you, how there’s different books for different people? This book!… This book just clicked with me. I thought it was amazing and I loved every word of it.

I absolutely fell in love with Chloe immediately. My heart was just breaking for her. I loved what a brave, strong young woman she was at only 16. She very much reminded me of myself when I was that age. I don’t typically connect to male characters as much… But Jarvis, he just absolutely stole my heart! Such amazing character development. Molly, Maggie, oh so many great characters here! I really felt like I knew these people, like they were family. I was invested in their lives and what happened to them.

It was suspenseful, heartbreaking, cheer-worthy, and memorable. This book had me thinking about it for days after finishing. I just really had such an emotional connection with this book. I connected with the characters deeply! Officially going on my list of top favorites for the year.
First one by this author for me! Woot, definitely won't be my last.

I knew I was in the hands of a master storyteller from the first pages of Beyond the Cemetery Gate. This mystery suspense novel opens at break-neck speed and never lets up on the gas. Sixteen-year-old Chloe, the teenage protagonist, will capture your heart as you follow her through agonizing ordeals in the search for her beloved father’s killer. The stakes and tension in this gripping tale ramp up as we learn that Chloe’s life is on the line in the race to find the killer, culminating in a well-earned surprise ending that brought tears to my eyes. This story has everything: a protagonist who earned my empathy from the first pages, a supporting cast of colorful characters, small-town corruption, lies, secrets, betrayal, and crisp pacing that made this brilliantly crafted novel impossible to put down. Well done, Valerie Biel.

Beyond the Cemetery Gate is a YA mystery book involving our FMC named Chloe. Chloe lives in a cemetery as the caretaker's daughter. However one night,Chloe finds her father dead with the appearance of an overdose, except Chloe knows it is a lie as her father never did drugs in his life. I was intrigued from Chapter 3 with the 'watcher' watching over Chloe and what is happening with father and wondering why they are not supposed to be there at the cemetery. It was an interesting interlude in the beginning of the book as the watcher also thinks Chloe is beautiful, almost like a stalker...
Chloe is now questioning everything she knew about her dad and is determined to find out the truth and prove her dad did not overdose but is a victim in a homicide investigation. Chloe was involved in a house fire as a young child and has scars and some memory of this happening in the book. We also get different pov's in the book which made a lot of sense, since I think some differences in pov's can help make a book better and more engaging. Chloe is a relatable character especially as a teenager who knows a lot about her dad, since they are very close to each other. I can also relate to that relationship as our immediate family and I are super close. I loved this book, it was one of the best books I have read this year so far. Chloe's father has a lot of secrets in this book and one just cascades into another as you read the book. I loved that ending too! It was a great ending to find out what happened to Dean and Chloe's mother. WOW!

I think the author did an amazing job conveying the mystery of what happened to Chloe and her father!

You won't be able to put this book down! One of the best thrillers I've read in a long time! Sixteen-year-old Chloe is obsessed with discovering the truth about her father's sudden mysterious death, convinced that he was murdered in the cemetery where he was employed as a caretaker. As she secretly delves into this mystery, she endangers her own life and discovers long-held family secrets that will change her and her life forever. Valerie Biel is a master of suspense and has created some unforgettable characters in this novel. I highly recommend it!

This is a twisty ya mystery about a girl trying to prove her father's death wasn't an accidental overdose while trying to evade social services. As she gets deeper into the mystery, she uncovers family secrets. It's part mystery, part coming of age. I enjoyed this one. The pacing is solid and the characters were interesting. I love that she lives at the cemetery.

I received an ARC from the author, but these thoughts are my own.

Valerie Biel created a main character in Chole you can’t help but root for as she navigates through the treacherous details of her father’s death while trying to clear his name and find his killer. As secrets of her family are revealed, lingering questions remain in her sixteen year old heart. A captivating read written in a 3 POV layout that builds natural suspense for the reader with each turn of the page, eager to get more clues to the mystery. Giving the perspective of her father Dean leading up to his death and that of “the Watcher” creates a larger story than the limited view of Chloe and allows a degree of empathy for the other characters that would otherwise be clouded by a single point of view.

As Chloe realizes she needs help, she struggles to know who to trust. The unique side characters highlight the importance of having a supportive community to help during life’s turmoils. A lesson for all of us to not let our pride make us struggle alone.

A mystery with a coming of age element that captures any readers’ attention and is a perfect introduction to the genre for a young adult reader.

Biel crafts a murder mystery with plenty of suspense and plot turns.

When the death of Chloe’s father is listed as a drug overdose, Chloe knows the record is a lie. She heard voices in the cemetery that night and she will stop at nothing to find the killer. Stuck in a house in the middle of a cemetery reminds her of her father’s demise, but he was the caretaker, so home is among the dead.

As Chloe starts to unravel the mysteries surrounding her father’s death, she discovers lackluster police work, and troubling revelations about her past. With the social worker prying into if Chloe has an adult in her home, Chloe must stay one step ahead of child protective services. Her only guardian is far away in a war zone.

Biel adds delightful characters such as Jarvis, Chloe’s handsome and shy lab partner, Molly who hires Chloe so she can have money at her disposal, and the Chief of Police who has a big heart and just might believe Chloe’s concerns.

There are villains in this story and a “Watcher” who is revealed at the end of the book. No spoilers here. With the drug thread and threat of danger, this story is suited for older teens.

Biel will take you on a wild ride in this mystery. She crafts a fantastic thriller that has a splash of romance, and a wonderful cast of friends.

I received an advanced copy of this story from the author, but all opinions are my own. I am a huge fan of this story.

In Beyond the Cemetery Gate, Valerie Biel presents a compelling mystery with characters you’ll want to remember.

Chloe knows, beyond any doubt, that her father doesn’t use drugs. But when he is found dead of an overdose, no one believes her. Since she is only 16 years old Chloe must dodge persistent social workers, well-meaning friends, and apparently incompetent police officers to investigate for herself. In the process, she discovers a tangled web of secrets, upending her life and making her question everything she thought she knew about her father.

With elements of suspense, coming-of-age, and teen angst, Beyond the Cemetery Gates is a real page turner. From the first few sentences, when Chole wakes to strange noises outside her window, I was hooked. I read the whole thing in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down.

I especially liked the sections of flashbacks that gradually reveal what lead to the murder. Each scene of the days leading up to Dean Cowan’s death gives just enough hints to keep the reader guessing and wanting more.

I also liked the scenes with a viewpoint from an unnamed watcher. They provide another layer of mystery, adding depth to the character’s development. Having the watcher’s perspective helps readers develop sympathy for, and suspicion of, this unreliable narrator.

Biel does a masterful job of character development, presenting each one as someone readers might recognize in real life. I love how Chloe gradually figures out who to trust and who to count on. Even more importantly, she learns that even though her father is dead, she doesn’t have to face the world alone.

With its many layers of secrets, tightly woven plot, and great characters, Beyond the Cemetery Gate tops my list of books worth reading this year.

I would give this book a solid 3.5/5.
I found both the title and cover very appealing, though after finishing the book, was a little surprised that most of the action in this story actually happens inside the cemetery gate, not beyond.
Chloe's character very much leans into her age, making less than safe choices in the face of danger, but as the mother of a teen only slightly older, the decision making skills are definitely on point for the age. I loved the character of Molly, as well as the Sheriff. I wish we knew a little more about Jarvis.
I questioned who the Watcher was for a bit, and I was honestly a bit disappointed that it wasn't someone else. Parts of the story are predictable, and parts aren't, but it was a nice palette cleanse after some heavier, more intense, mysteries I've recently read.

Thank you to Goodreads for allowing me the chance to win! This was my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it. I felt and related to on a deep level with Chloe. My dad was also murdered so some moments in this book really hit home with me. I do have some unanswered questions when it comes to Jarvis 🤔 definitely excited that this is a series so I'll be able to read more about Chloes life. The character development and relationships especially between Jarvis, Molly, and Chloe were well written.

Fantastic dual-timeline murder mystery with hints of the paranormal.

Beyond the Cemetery Gate: The Secret Keeper’s Daughter is the first book in author Valerie Biel’s fantastic new young adult/adult cross-over Chloe and Maggie Mystery series and features a clever dual timeline with just a hint of paranormal elements. Chloe Cowyn, who lives with her father in a house nestled with the city cemetery where he works as the caretaker, is awakened one night to screams, shouting, and flickering lights among the headstones. Thinking it is kids who have snuck in for a scary prank, she goes to wake her father so he can shoo the trespassers away. Finding his bed empty and assuming he’s already up and outside doing just that, she heads out as well in case he needs any help, only to find him dead, propped up against a monument with a needle in his arm. When the police declare his death an accidental overdose, Chloe urges them to look closer as she’s certain her father was and never had been an addict and that she had heard multiple voices in the cemetery at the time of his death. The police appear to close the case without further investigation, so Chloe decides to pursue the truth on her own.

The story cleverly unfolds through the viewpoints of father and daughter, with his narrative providing the backdrop for her account of the events of the present. Unbeknownst to Chloe, Dean Cowyn had been keeping a lot of secrets from her regarding their past, and those secrets were just about to come out into the open in a very dangerous way.

Chloe is a strong and determined 16-year-old, and she never wavers in her belief that her father’s death was caused by someone else in the cemetery that night. During times of stress, which is practically the entire book, Chloe figuratively turns to her guardian angel, Leb, for comfort, which is promptly given. Described as a loving presence and a warm, comforting hug, the invisible Leb has been a part of Chloe’s life for as long as she can remember. While they do not communicate per se, he is always there when she needs him and ready to provide mental and emotional support. As for Dean, he’s a dedicated father, trying to keep his daughter safe, which also means oblivious to what really happened the night of the house fire that took a life and caused the terrible scars on the lower half of her body. But while Dean kept those secrets from his daughter out of love, her ignorance of the truth puts her at a terrible disadvantage and her life in jeopardy.

A third narrator, The Watcher, provides stalkerish commentary about Chloe’s movements, and this adds to the tense and creepy atmosphere of the entire story. The Watcher’s identity is kept hidden, and I speculated throughout the book about who it was, thinking it was first one person and then another until, in one of many surprising plot twists, they and their motives are finally revealed.

The plot is fast-paced and compelling, and I was completely consumed by the story from the moment I began reading it. I could feel Chloe’s frustration with the lack of police action and her rising panic when she was unable to contact Maggie, her only other relative, forcing her to lie to and dodge the county’s social worker. The pressure increases when she realizes her sources of ready cash are gone and the city has given her a quickly approaching deadline to pack and vacate the cemetery house to accommodate the newly hired caretaker. While readers will be fairly certain they know who the killer is, it is the reason why and what comes next that drives the story.

I recommend BEYOND THE CEMETERY GATE: THE SECRET KEEPER’S DAUGHTER to readers of young adult/adult mysteries and thrillers, especially those who enjoy a little paranormal element in their stories.

Beyond the Cemetery Gate: The Secret Keeper’s Daughter

by Valerie Biel

Chloe, a high school junior, is determined to unravel the mystery of who killed her father with a drug overdose in the cemetery where he is the caretaker. Having lost a loved one expectedly myself I know the emotional roller coaster Chloe struggles are true to life. On one level the plot is a mystery but it is written as a suspense novel which draws the reader in and makes the book a page turner.
The story is like a Russian Matryoshka doll. Chloe lies repeatedly to protect herself. She is keenly aware of her lies and suffers consequences for her actions but remains relentless in proving her father did not die of a self-inflicted drug overdose. Valerie Biel uses flashback chapters throughout the novel to reveal a dark family history and secrets her father has kept Chloe’s entire life.
There are several chapters titled Watcher which gives another level of mystery to the novel because the identity of the watcher is unknown. However, the watcher clearly cares for Chloe and wants to protect her.
Chloe is joined in her quest by a unique character, Jarvis, who we learn has his own challenges and suffers at the hand of his father. Jarvis is an intelligent recluse who offers to help Chloe. Jarvis learns to trust her and risks having a relationship.
The final chapter is a reveal which wraps up every loose end in the story. It is the perfect conclusion to the novel.
This book should not be relegated to one age group of readers. Anyone who reads mystery or suspense will find this an excellent novel.

This book apparently falls into the young adult genre category, but I think it would appeal to just about anyone who likes an amateur sleuth tale.

Young Chloe hears voices one night that wake her up. Outside the young lady goes, only to find something she was not expecting – her dad. Unfortunately, Chloe has had to learn to lie … perhaps stretch the truth and/or make some pretty big omissions in order to be the amateur sleuth she thinks she is. She also discovers a friendship in Jarvis that she wasn’t expecting. More on that in the book – young teenage romance is an underlying story here. All Chloe really wants is the truth and she believes the police aren’t doing their job, much to the chagrin of the police chief.

I was quite entertained by Chloe and her antics, all the running around she did just to avoid being caught, so to speak, with her sleuthing. She gets herself into a few predicaments along the way, but also discovers who her true friends are and who she can trust. Chloe also seems to be quite a resourceful and smart young lady, and wait until you read about the police chief’s estimation of her abilities. And the truths Chloe uncovers along the way…

Molly is the colorful character in this tale with her fascination with bright red, a poodle skirt, and her own diner. Maggie is another character that I’d like to know more about and perhaps I will get that opportunity through this series. I will be interested to see what Maggie and Chloe get up to next as they delve into the new relationship they’ve had to develop.

I was hooked by the first line in Beyond the Cemetery Gate by Valerie Biel - “In the space between sleep and wakefulness, a sound seeped into my consciousness.” Pow! This is a page-turner not to be missed. I was saying the three magic words every mystery writer hopes their reader says, "Then what happened?"

Author Biel is a masterful storyteller and a gifted writer. Lines like, “It weighed more than I expected and made me think of all the things my dad carried in his pockets. I resisted the impulse to look inside so I could feel close to my dad for a second.” This is a deeply moving and meaningful passage that doesn't overwhelm with sadness. Biel's writing draws us into the story and keeps us there, showing a depth of emotion without dictating our feelings. This is truly masterful writing.

Valerie Biel’s characters are unique and memorable, and the settings are so well described that you are drawn in and pushed along the streets with Emma, Jarvis, and Chloe. Biel’s dialogue is moving and thought-provoking. “I slipped my hand into hers. I didn’t remember holding hands with my mother when I was little—before the fire.”

This is a book that will leave you eagerly recommending it to friends, and it deserves a wide readership. I won't spoil anything when I say the ending is inevitable and a surprise. You'll be left eagerly anticipating more from this talented author. Bravo, Biel.
