JEAN

DNF @ 40%

When I started this series, from book 1, I was so excited to get my hands to the king and his valet’s story and now look at me, I DNF it! It was a disappointment! My major complaint is when the King finds out how Jean came to his life years ago, he didn’t have any particular reaction (Actually, he was too cool about it)! And after that, I lost my interest in the story. Hope you enjoy it more than me though!

I didn't like this book anymore than I liked book 1. Indeed, I think I liked it less, even though I was curious about Alarick's and Jean's relationship. They'd been together for millennia after all.

Unfortunately, the plot completely overshadowed the romance. There was just so much here: ancient beasts, battle, magic weapons, all the shifter children, Jean's mysterious form, threat of death by poison, Alarick's former lovers. Despite all that, I was bored reading this book and skimmed a couple chapters.

I also found it odd how Alarick's children interacted with him. They're there to fight for him, but they banter with him, tease him about sex, and Owin even slapped him in book 1. What's that all about? Who treats a king like that?

I wish I'd felt more chemistry between Alarick and Jean, but the romance was on the sidelines and by the time they got to it, I was over it. I mean, it takes you thousands of years to figure out that your best friend is your mate? How dense can you be?

I'm going with 2.5 stars, rounded down. This author and I just don't click.

I can’t help but question the insane levels of obliviousness that kept King Alarick, king of all shifters, from recognising until now that he was in love with Jean, his valet (his fiercest protector and dearest companion) of a MILLENNIA. I mean, I love a slow-burn and a friends-to-lovers tale, I really do, but this seemed excessively ignorant for my liking.

Having said that, I still enjoyed this final instalment a good deal—to the point that it was probably my favourite of the trilogy.

There was an overwhelming number of characters (new and old) jammed in here, but even though I found some of the multi-character scenes confusing at times, the various interactions between Jean, King Alarick, and the other shifters were often super cute and/or highly amusing.

I liked the romance, even though I was shaking my head at how long it took these two all-powerful goofs to embrace their mating call, as it were.

I also liked the increased threat-level in this story, as well the appearances of the past MCs, now happily mated, as they teased Alarick and Jean relentlessly about their obvious feelings, all while staying loyal and eager to help in the face of this new great threat to their beloved King.

It was fun and sweet, with a dash of adventure and excitement that helped end this short shifter series with a bang. Once again, proving how effortlessly Cochet blends action and magic, with good characters, romance, and plenty of heart and humour.

This third installment was quite ok I would say, unfortunately my expectations were much higher. The story is very similar to the previous ones, somehow I had hoped that the romance of the king would actually be more. The sizzle between Alarick and Jean was unfortunately a bit lacking and the many annoying distractions and fights didn't help.
It has a few good passages, like this one.

I stilled, my heart pounding fiercely as he placed his fingers under my chin and lifted my face, his warm breath caressing my skin as his lips brushed over mine. I had dreamed of this day for so very long. To feel his lush lips on mine, to know his taste. I yearned for him with a burning desire I’d never imagined. 🫠

But somehow it's not enough, I needed more of it, so everything just scratches the surface and the tiny sex scenes were also good but also way too short and somehow I didn't feel it. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Well, it was amusing and entertaining.
Now you wonder why I give it 4 stars after all ... it's the epilogue that blew me. It was just too wonderfully cute.

Utterly adorable and a fitting end to a unique series which draws on a multitude of different mythological sources and mixes them in with shifter lore to create delightful paranormal romance.

Alarick and Jean were a wonderful match, the King of all the Shifters being utterly oblivious to how his feelings for his valet come right hand man were actually those of love.

And Jean, it was a real surprise to me to find out his secret, but it was a clever idea and worked perfectly.

I don't think there's any more planned for this series but I'd love if there were!

I’ve been waiting for this final book of the trio since the very first. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed both princes’ and their mates but I was fascinated by the king and his mysterious relationship with his valet. It was clear to everyone, except Alarick that is, that Jean cared deeply for him, and longed for more. Jean may be the one without his sight but Alarick is completely blind to Jean’s obvious affection. Or maybe Alarick simply wasn’t ready to acknowledge the elephant in the room because he still hadn’t admitted to himself that he felt the same for Jean. For a brave man, he was rather timid when it came to his own feelings. That is…until their immortality is threatened. Fighting for your life has a way of prioritizing things. And it turns out their feelings for one another are at the very top of that list.
King Alarick is kind and gentle but one badass father when the time comes to protect his family. I loved how he flipped from carefree to battle focused. For a pampered man he was absolutely selfless when it came to Jean and his children. I loved how accepting Alarick was when Jean revealed his greatest secret. I loved how loyal the children were. I loved the heart racing battles and passionate stolen moments. I loved how dreams came true, even those that were never permitted to play out. Despite the vicious warfare, it was sweet and tender and full of goo. Yep, after years of hiding and denying their love, they let it free and it was gooey goodness. It was exactly what I needed and the perfect finale for this series!

Beware of: Shifter galore…shifters of every shape and size come together to safeguard their father. An outlandish adventure that is sure to crack a smile. And time honoured one-sided love that turns into openly reciprocated love to last forevermore.

This book is for: Calling all paranormal fans! This shifting trilogy should be experienced in proper order but they are short and quick reads…and if you’re craving something out of this world, I suggest starting at the beginning and jumping into this fun-filled ride.

A fun final installment to an entertaining, but not memorable shifter series.

This is the story of Alarick, king of all shifters, and Jean, his mysterious, deadly advisor.

It’s… fun. It follows the same pattern like the previous two books: there’s a quest to retrieve something (this time: the scythe of Kronos, the only weapon able to kill the only being that’s able to kill immortal Alarick).

They discover they’re in love (more precisely: Alarick discovers he’s in love, Jean already loved him for eons). They mate, and they eliminate the threat.
The end.

Again, it’s not a full length book, only 140 pages, so there’s no room for complex plot lines and character development.

By far the best thing about these books is the narration by Greg Boudreaux- so if you’re looking for an easy book to listen to, you can’t do much wrong here.

This was the best one yet! I couldn't wait for Alarick and Jean's story and it didn't disappoint. Long time friends to lovers, Alarick totally clueless and Jean badass but in love with the man he was meant to kill. Each realizing that the other has been their one and only for many years.

I'm sad to see the end of this little series. They've been sweet, quick and easy reads. Something to just enjoy.

I adored Jean and Alarick's story. There's a lot of action, plenty of cameos and we finally find out what Jean's background is. The story moved along swiftly as they basically mirror the quests they have sent their shifter children on. The story is full of humor, action, and romance, and the ending was so sweet. I would have loved to have had more time with Jean and Alarick, but the novella packed in enough to leave me smiling and satisfied.

ETA: And the audiobook is just as amazing as I KNEW it would be! I loved these two so so much and Greg does such a wonderful job, with a great range of voices and so much emotion in his tone. I just loved it SO MUCH.

Ohhhhh FINALLY, we get Alarick and Jean's book! I've been looking forward to their book since we first read about them last year, and I just LOVED their story! This was just the refreshing quick read I needed during this time.

We all learned from the ending of the second book that Jean coming into Alarick's life wasn't just to be his valet. But Jean just fell for Alarick completely his new life mission is to protect Alarick - and in this story, we get to read about it happening, and we finally get to learn what Jean is.

I don't want to give anything major away (and it's hard to say too much without giving major things away), other than that I LOVED these two together! I love Alarick's hatred of squirrels, how everything Jean has done since finding Alarick has been for his best interests, and I loved the big reveal of who Jean really is. I loved their banter, I LOVED getting to see Owin and Grimm again (Owin is fierce, y'all!) and I really loved the two of them finally taking and admitting their feelings for the other.

If you haven't read this trilogy yet, I highly highly recommend it! And I totally recommend the first book in audio format - Greg KILLS it. This one releases March 31st - enjoy!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

"You are oblivious as you are magnificent, Alarick. I love you. I have loved you from the moment you asked me to dance, and not as a friend. I’m in love with you. I hadn’t known I had a heart until you made it beat."

I’m so glad we get the chance to see King Alarick and Jean’s story because from the very first book, I was sure they were meant to be together.

As the Father and King of all Shifters, Alarick has been around on Earth for thousands of years and the only one who has remained by his side is his advisor Jean. He has been his ally, his protector and most importantly, his one true friend, and though he doesn’t know what kind of creature he is, he’s just as powerful as the King himself.

One day, Nathair comes into the picture: he’s the same kind as Jean, and he comes “to finish what the other couldn’t”, meaning, he will kill King Alarick and destroy all balance between the Shifters.

Now, I don’t want to give to many spoilers but let me tell you that this was probably my favorite book of the series. Alarick and Jean’s romance was the most precious thing ever. Is funny how we change so much around the person that we love and both of them were utterly adorable. More often than not I found myself smiling like an idiot because everybody could see they loved each other even if they didn’t acknowledge that wonderful feeling.

I think both of them complement each other and I could feel the devotion they felt towards their beloved. On top of that, watching them fight together against Nathair, talking about the old days and how they’ve always been together, despite all circumstances makes me believe in love. This is a precious couple and must be protected at all costs!

I would totally recommend you to read these books! Consider me a total fan and of course, I’ll be looking forward to read more Charlie Cochet’s books! Her characters are just marvelous!

Cute finish to a series I have thoroughly enjoyed. What a tease though! I can't believe we were introduced to so many new Princes, one in particular who really wants his mate, and this is the end!

I'm so glad Jean finally got his man! Really, I am so glad the Clueless King got a freaking CLUE! HAHA!

Good stuff but I really am sad to see it end.

A Joyfully Jay review.

The King and His Vigilant Valet is the third (and final) book in the Paranormal Princes series. While you could probably catch on here without reading the earlier books, we do meet Jean and Alarick in both the earlier stories and this book does end up tying in with some aspects of The Prince and the Captivating Carpenter. So I think you will get more enjoyment here if you have read the other stories as well.

As I said, we have met Jean and Alarick before and I enjoy their relationship. There is a playfulness between them that I really like. Alarick may be the king, but it is pretty clear that Jean runs things, especially since Alarick can be kind of socially clueless and bumbling at times. There is a sweetness here as Alarick realizes that his feelings for Jean are much more than friendship and the tight bond the men have developed over the years allows them to smoothly move from friends to lovers.

Charlie Cochet sure has a way with fantasy stories! All of the episodes of the Paranormal Princes series are completely enchanting, and I’m only sorry Ms. Cochet has decided to wrap it up after The Prince and His Vigilant Valet.

Jean has been one of my favorite characters throughout the series. Hearing him described by the other shifters has made him very mysterious and intriguing. As the central character in The Prince and His Vigilan Valet we finally get his story. Not only does he have an amazing backstory, but it turns out he’s a sweet and devoted guy who very much deserves his happily-ever-after.

A tad bit oblivious, and distractible in the best of ways, King Alarick has been a source of humor throughout the series. Charlie Cochet does this kind of character so well! Of course we want him to wake up and see that Jean is completely enamored with him… and duh, Alarick is enamored right back. I loved watching these guys puzzle it all out, and of course, their chemistry is smokin’ hot once they succumb to their attraction.

The story of Nathair, the journey to find the Scythe, and the final battle are woven in with the romance. Ms. Cochet always writes a clever, exciting story - all I can say is that it’s all over much too soon.

I have been anticipating this book ever since we got a little glimpse we got of it at the end of The Prince and His Captivating Carpenter.

And, boy, was I not disappointed.

Jean has willingly and happily protected and served his king, companion and the man he’s in love with for centuries. But, the past always has a way of coming back and secrets he has long since buried are making themselves known. Can Jean protect his king and his heart all while knowing what’s about to be known can destroy everything?

Alarick is the King of All Shifters and has spent centuries playing matchmaker. And, somehow during all this time he has never really thought about himself and who his mate could be. That is until a force comes to kill him and he and the man he trusts more than anyone must embark on a mission to retrieve a weapon. And, of course during this time is when things become clear to Alarick...and he figures out that the one has been right there all along.

But, can they have this or is it too late?

This was a fantastic read. Short, sweet and full love so much tenderness I honestly could not stop smiling. I love this series and I just knew these two would become my favorite couple -- and they did. If you’re looking for a book filled with slight angst, some drama and such sweet romance I recommend this!

Cute, well-written fluff is something we could probably all do with at the moment, and this third instalment in Charlie Cochet’s fun fantasy Paranormal Princes series certainly delivered on all counts.

I recently listened to book one, The Prince and His Bedeviled Bodyguard, and was immediately intrigued by the glimpses we were given of the relationship between Alarick, King of All the Shifters and his valet/companion, Jean.  There was obviously something more than a master-servant relationship between them; equally obviously, Jean was desperately in love with Alarick who it seemed was completely oblivious to that fact.  (And also completely oblivious to a lot of things!)

I haven’t read the second book, (although I intend to – or more likely, I’ll listen to it when it comes out) but was able to jump into this one without any problems; events from previous books are mentioned and some characters recur (most notably Grimm and Owin – who is still fierce (!) – from the first), but this works  as a standalone.

King Alarick is immortal and if not quite a god, is pretty close to being one.  He’s ancient (although doesn’t look a day over thirty-five!) and has, for the last few millennia been accompanied almost everywhere by his blind valet, Jean, Lord Elrich, who is utterly devoted to him.  But even Alarick doesn’t know the truth about his friend and companion; Jean has kept a dark secret for thousands of years, and it looks as though he is going to have to reveal it if he is to keep Alarick safe – even though doing so could cause the man he loves to turn from him in disgust.

The reader is thrown into the action right from the first page when it emerges that a creature – probably the only one in existence with the ability to do so – is out to kill Alarick, and that the only weapon that can defeat it is the Scythe of Kronos.  The problem is that the Scythe has been missing for almost as long as Alarick has been alive, and nobody knows where it is.  Like the characters in the previous books, Alarick and Jean set out on a quest of sorts to find it, and along the way, readers discover the truth about Jean’s mysterious past and watch as Alarick finally gets a clue (!) and realises that love has been staring him in the face for millennia.

The King and His Vigilant Valet is novella length, and packs in a lot of story, but if you’re expecting carefully crafted and intricate world-building, you won’t find that here.  The focus is firmly on the characters and their romance and some things are hand-waved (such as the fact that when these characters shift their clothes magically disappear and reappear). The story relies on the reader having knowledge of fantasy/paranormal novel conventions and of some Greek mythology, although there’s nothing too obscure here.  Alarick is adorably clueless a lot of the time, especially when it comes to framing an apology ;) and Jean is the perfect foil for him. All in all this is a quick, fun, light-hearted read with minimal angst, lots of action, plenty of banter and a nice amount of steam.

I adored this final installment.

King Alarick and Jean were adorable and sweet and loving together, and when they finally got together it was well worth the wait.

When Jean's past comes back to haunt him...and comes back to try to hurt Alarick, Jean must finally reveal the truth about how he and Alarick met and what kind of shifter he really is.

For thousands of years at Alarick's side, Jean has been in love with him, but has been too ashamed about their start and too scared to reveal who he was and is to his beloved king.

But circumstances force him to reveal all, and Alarick finally learns the truth, and comes to realize his own truths and how he feels about Jean which he has been too oblivious to see for so long.

This was a cute series, and it would have been fun to see even more love stories, although I also understand that this could go on and on, but it would start to have the same formula and get repetitive, and this is a wonderful place to leave it off, with the King of All Shifters finding his happiness. We can just imagine that the few new princes we met found their HEA's.

Two thumbs up from me, I loved this. Now I can't wait for more from Cochet, who I always love getting a new piece of writing from.

**grm** (Spoilers)

I still liked the first book more, but this one gets the 2nd position. I liked Jean and Alarick, and I was really interested in reading their story, only that I expect so much more from them. In the previous books we saw glimpses of their life together and that gave me high expectations, but sadly I felt as if something was missing in this book. I still found the story interesting and I loved the end with Jean pratically making a baby that is his and Alarick's, but I wished for more. In my opinion it would have been better if they had been lovers before the actual story started and then they slowly understood they were in love. I wished for a rival in love or some jealousy, I think this would have given the story a spark that it missed.

For me something is missing from this series. In order for the main characters to get in love they have to go on a quest. In this short quest we don't get to know the boys very well all is rushed and then bam .. they are in love and happy .
We now get King Alaric story who is thousands of years old .. but acts like he is 16 .. in was hard to believe the story they were best friends for a long time and now on a quest they both realise that they are soul mates.
I didn't feel the chemestry or the love .. I just saw a lot of cliches a lot of pointless characters just to make the battles more dramaticm

And finally the king and his valet get their story! I love the adorable, meddling king, and it was great to finally see him get his happy ending. He and Jean are such a perfect match, it's adorable.

I love this series for the sheer escapist FUN, the author's sense of humor is just my thing!

PLUS, a certain adorable, I mean, FIERCE Ozelot shifter and his mate make an appearance and are just as precious as ever.

This was a really sweet ending to a hilarious series!

Now, which Charlie Cochet book do I read next… Thoughts, anyone? :D

This was cute enough, it definitely made me chuckle quite a bit.

For this to be about the King of all Shifters, it wasn't as good or exciting as I thought it would be, but it was still entertaining.

I loved the way all his shifter children came together to help protect their King. The most adorable part of the book was the end, I was happy for Jean.

It could have been better, but a cute read.

**The audiobook is just as good as the story and adds great depth to Jean and Alarick.

I wish this wasn't the last book, but it was so good to get Jean and Alarick's story. The author has a way of world building that draws you in easily and the dynamics flow really well so the world becomes a character on its own.

Awwww these two have such a cute and sweet connection. I, like most people I'm sure, have wanted this story since the beginning of the series. Jean and Alarick are just plain adorable together. I love how devoted Jean is to his king. He's given up everything to be at his side and protect him from any threat coming his way.

I really enjoyed Jean's backstory. We finally get to find out about him and where he came from. His devotion to Alarick is just lovely. He's content to be by Alarick's side even when he thinks there's no hope to ever be with the king. But now a threat from the past is coming to finish what Jean was supposed to have done eons ago. An old enemy, but one whose power might just be stronger than Jean's own anymore. The loss of his sight severely limits some of his powers.

Of course Alarick and Jean were going to have to go on their own little quest to save themselves and bring them together. They've enjoyed sending Alarick's children out on their own mate quests in the past, it's only fitting they get theres. I did enjoy seeing all of the other shifters coming out to help save their king, they do truly care about him. This was a little silly, but also a lot of fun. I love the heart in these stories. They're warm and caring and bring a smile to my face.
