WWWWOOOOOOOWWWWWWW….wow. WOW. (no I am not saying World of Warcraft a lot) Just wow.
Warning: I was given this in exchange for an honest review and this is part of a blog tour also so honesty is the best policy, I think yes.

First thoughts: This. Was. Beautiful. Really. It was. I couldn’t get over who beautifully it was written, and wow talk about managing to shock me! Damn woman! Jamie you are very very crafty, she lures you in, like yeah you think you are, of course you are…of course. You keep thinking that way babe, you think you figured it all out….probably not. Anyways moving on the characters amazingly well developed, awesomely written, plot shocking, new, interesting, and very intriguing. Overall this book was an A++ for me. I really did love this.
Thoughts on Plot: Like I already mentioned I thought this was wow shocking. It was really interesting I don’t want to say specifics because I don’t do spoilers but really, wow. Okay half this book I thought I had figured out half the time I decided you know what I am just going to sit back and let it happen but at the same time I wanted to try to guess …. I failed a couple times…. A lot of times. So many times. Anyways I thought that it was quite well done, at times I felt so convinced on something, other times I was questioning (these are all good things but again I can’t going into specifics). The times you are supposed to feel as hopeless as the characters you do, or as elated, or as blah blah blah are you getting the point? Yeah? Awesome. Okay but I will admit there were a few times I know that we were supposed to be in the dark with Indie but god I was so confused that I wish that the reveal came just a little bit sooner. It wasn’t so bad that I was pissed off that it was like that just in general sometimes it just takes a bit longer to get there. Relationships were a bit part in this book so I just want to spend a sentence or two saying I really thought they were really well done. Indie’s two best friends are guys and YES they did date at one time, (you know what I mean right? Indie dated both the guys – at different time, before they became friends)
Thoughts on characters: (NOW I don’t do this for very book, but I have been doing it more frequently and I wanted to do it for this book so this is my casting for the characters!)
Indie:
Mason:
Gavin:
Wilder:
Phoenix
Guardian:
So about them.
Indie: So I am slightly confused…she was supposed to be weak? She was supposed to be timid. And she was supposed to be I don’t know non-conferential is what I was getting from the way she talked about herself. But I didn’t see that, at all. Which don’t get me wrong here, I loved it. She was this very generous, loving, broken woman who was also very snarky, kickass, and totally a smartass. I loved her. I could see moments where she was breaking down a bit but I don’t blame her ….at all at the moments she acted like that. And honestly I thought she was a really amazing MC I really liked her. Like I said before who she thought she was and who she really was didn’t match but isn’t that the human complex most of the time? Anyways as the female MC she was top-notch she never really annoyed me, she NEVER ever did the whole love triangle thing even though we have a whole lot of hot gents, she was true to one person. Awesome MC. Awesome.
Phoenix: He was….wow…swoon-worthy if you like your men alpha male, that hot sort of possessive, and yumm-ie. Oh yes. I suppose my thing about him was though, there wasn’t enough of him. I also wasn’t quite convinced of his actions/decisions/reasonings. I thought a lot of the times he was giving up to easily which bothered me because I know that man is a fighter, I know he is. But yes….hott-ie.
Mason: He was fun, sweet, and dammit if I didn’t want him. :D he was a good friend in all seriousness. He really was protective of Indie and always tried to make her smile. I loved that he was that, he was a good friend, yes there was one part in the beginning when I thought….oh shit this kid still has feelings for her, like feelings feelings like more than bbf feelings you know? Luckily that was the only time I felt that, and I think it worked as a way to show they really did have history.
Gavin: He was the serious, down to earth, computer nerd with omgosh the best morals ever. I loved this kid simply for his one moral which was: all or none. He wasn’t about cheating – which thank you, thank you, thank you because I don’t believe in it either, and I don’t know you just don’t run into someone that flat out says that. I loved it. Anyways for the most part he was pretty quiet, and seemingly kept to himself but I could tell he truly did care for Indie and for Mason as best friends.
Wilder: Was as his name suggests a bit wild. He was the wild card, hot, passionate and in the next moment cold and unfeeling in the next. He was a puzzle that I am not quite sure we will figure out in this book. If you do please let me know because I would like to know. Anyways. So that was Wilder.
Guardian isn’t a huge part in this book hence why I am not going to talk about him. (yes I realized I did a picture for him, it’s because I might be a tad in love with...him… just saying.
So yeah no on the villains I am not talking about them mostly because I can’t find a way to do without giving something away. So no thank you.
The ending: Well it truly wasn’t the end, even it says that ;) the end was good, not really cliffhanger-y but enough that you and I will want to come back for more! Yay! I am really curious though whether we are keeping with the same MCs in this book or splitting off to others, which really it could go either way in my opinion, and honestly I think I would be happy with either way :D.
Rivulet was an absolute pleasure to read and I totally got sucked into life at Falcon Manor. The synopsis is spot on in the description of this wonderful story as we join Indie, her sister Cadence & almost boyfriends Mason, Gavin and Wilder on their journey to enlightenment, battling the gold digging Aunt for Falcon Manor & working out all that is Indie along the way. I really liked Indie’s character and thought that even though others wanted to see her as someone crippled with grief following the death of a few close family members, she came across pretty level headed especially with how she dealt with her Aunt and the efforts she was going to, to strip Indie of her inheritance. I liked how she had been raised, how she dealt with her abnormalities, her ‘two beats’ philosophy, her need to ‘save’ people & put them on the right track & her family values. I connected with her as she went through her journey, I admired her for her outlook, her stubbornness, her need to do right, I pitied her for the hand life had dealt her but I mostly routed for her every step of the way and I loved when she found her warmth, bringing love & hope to her troubled existence. I was captivated by the story, I literally could not put it down especially when the mystery man turned up and turned the whole plot on its head. Believe me when I say that this is not just another reincarnation book, it is so much more! It isn’t just the souls of our two lovers that need to re unite, it’s larger than that, it involves everything & everyone and I believe this book is just the tip of the iceberg. Falcon Manor - the house that Indie has grew up in – features heavily in the background of the story, helping Indie unlock some memories & mysteries, being the major asset that is fought over and I wished I could see it for real, towards the end of the book I was actually visualising it by the descriptions and I loved that! I love when I can visualise scenes in a book and I love old houses & architecture so that it featured heavily in this story was a plus. There is a lot I could say about this book, I truly want to gush about it but everything is linked and even to hint at what is happening could give away something. Just know that it’s definitely a page turner, it’s mysterious, it’s emotional, it’s filled with twists & turns and one of those soul deep love connections that I adore and that is exactly how I felt about reading it, I adored it and I do hope there will be a sequel because there is so much more I need to find out & I’m desperate to see what’s next for everyone involved.
This book features Genevieve Indiana Falcon (aka Indie), the adopted daughter of the famous Falcon family. However, in an accident gone wrong, she loses her family and gains an enemy determined to take everything Indie has an inheritance to, trying to drive her out of her own house. It isn't until another accident throws Indie and her friends in a state of deathlike limbo that she's able to slowly piece together exactly who--and what--she's fight against, and the reason behind her strange curse to freeze things. Indie has a deadline of a few days to make sense of everything that has happened, including saving numerous souls trapped by an enemy. Turns out dying can have it's benefits at times...
At first, I found Indie's powers to freeze things a little like Elsa's from the Disney movie Frozen. But then I remembered that this book came out before Frozen did, so there's no way it's just a rip off. Just letting you all know that, in case you decide to try to compare it (don't).
Indie was quite an interesting character to read about. She's gone through quite a lot trying to beat Rasure (her aunt-in-law), who has come sweeping into her life trying to kick Indie out of her own home and deny her of her inheritance. Indie has gone through court battle after court battle against Rasure, and is constantly on her guard around her. Rasure is trying to make it seem like Indie is too unstable to inherit everything her parents left her (money and their manor), and is constantly supervising Indie, waiting for a moment of weakness to attack. Indie is able to keep her cool time after time, able to foil some of her plans and make Rasure look like the fool. But there's always something bigger in the world, and Indie finds that out the hard way with her powers and her friends. Even after Indie finds out that she's died in the accident, she's still bent on trying to set things right and stop Rasure. I definitely wouldn't have handled Rasure as well as Indie would have, that's for sure!
I absolutely loved Indie's support system of friends, mainly Gavin and Mason. Now, before you all freak out, they are not love interests. They are Indie's friends, and they are absolutely terrific. They stick up for Indie, help her through her issues with Rasure, push her to do the right thing, accept Indie for who she is, including her powers. They do a lot to try to protect Indie, way more than your normal friends would. Add that Gavin and Mason are best friends, and that they always see eye-to-eye about everything, and they make an absolutely amazing duo of friends. I wish I had friends like them.
Sebastian, or Phoenix, was our one and only love interest. He ticks off everything in the category: powerful, tormented, and hopelessly in love with Indie. I'm serious. His love for Indie was absolutely swoon-worthy, to the point where it could be seen as a little infuriating for her. He's doing what he thinks is best for her, trying to be her hero. But, like every strong heroine, Indie doesn't need his help, and we see Phoenix trying to come to terms with that, to let her be her own person and fight her own battles.
The plot wasn't bad. There was one character who's betrayal I was able to easily guess, but there was another character's betrayal I didn't see coming at all. There were a few times where I skimmed part of the book, but I noticed that there was the constant motif of clocks, which was nice. I'm not quite sold on the paranormal aspect of it, but I found the ending very satisfying, and hope that there's a bigger build up in the books to come!
The Writing: I really liked it. It made me be into the book and being interested from the first moment. Its all from one POV, from Indie's POV. Maybe I would like to read others POV (Phoenix,Mason or Gavin) but as a short story. I think it would be confusing to read it in the 'main' book.
The Story: It was a really interesting story form the beginning. The Falcon family taking care of children who had no family was such a sweet and amazing thing. Then, Indie with her powers. How amazing was that? I'm not sure I would like cold and ice as a power but it was amazing! Indie has a great character deveopment, people and circumstances, changes in her life make posible for her to grow as a strong main character. There are lots of twists, betrayal and things you don't expect. The Flacon's house is where all the action happens and most of the book is in there. I liked how the house was like laberinth or puzzle, how they had to find different keys to solve their problems, their existences. Its a race between time and characters and you have to find out who will win. Evil is in this too, and is something more they have to face. You have a kind of impossible but at the same time destined relationship. It's really beautiful to read, however sometimes was a bit too much for me. I hope to read more about other characters and powers, I want this plot to develop because I think in this book we get to read the introduction.
The Characters: Indie: I liked her through all the book but I really liked her at the end of the book. As I said before she has a great character development and I really want to read the next book to read more of her. Her powers are amazing. Phoenix: I loved him. He is so sweet but he doesn't pretend to be the stronger perfect who doesn't fear anything. He fear things, he fear his decisions if they are right or wrong. He is strong. And he is perfect in his own way. Indie and Phoenix relationship was so beautiful. Destined but impossible. They fight so much to be together and are amazing when they are side by side. I can't wait to read more of them in the next book. I want a Phoenix. I want a relationship as beautiful, strong, full of faith and love as them. Mason: He was such an amazing friend. While I was reading him and Gavin I was like 'I want male bestfriends like them'. He was there for Indie any time, anywhere. It was so beutiful, such a good friendship. Gavin: The same as Mason but I think I liked just a bit more Mason, just because I think I get to know Mason more than Gavin. But he is an amazing bestfriend too. Wilder: I had big expectation but he disappointed me. Cadence: At first I didn't hate her but I didn't like her. Now I hate her. :)
This is a great supernatural book, with mystery, action, betrayal, romance, friendship that leaves you wanting to continue the story.
"Nothing worth having comes instantly. It's the fight, the drive that makes your dreams strong enough to withstand the mark of time."
Rivulet is the story of Indie, a very special girl, weeks away from turning 21 and inheriting everything her parents left behind after their deaths. But Indie is not your normal girl. Everytime her emotions get the best of her everything she touches turns to ice and everytime she touches an object she can she the memories attached to it, her memories. But it's in her mansion that she has the most vivid memories of a past she know can't be hers but still feels like the most real thing she ever experienced. With prophetic dreams and some not so imaginary friends,a long with her actual friends she will try to unravel the mystery of her existance and the role that her evil aunt is playing in it.
The story of this book was certainly unique. Indie is a very special main character, which made me love her but also got me a bit frustrated. Sometimes I just couldn't understand her actions. Still she was quite enjoyable, unlike her sister, for some reason I could not like that girl. For me the most vivid and lovable characters in this book were the four guys closer to Indie. They way she described them and the way the acted just made me love them all. Another aspect of the book I loved was the Falcon family and its history. Such an amazing family. I'd love to be part of it, even though most of its members had terrible endings. The last part I enjoyed was the world that Magee created it really came to life, the places, the memories.
Unfortunately, this book had some things that I am not a huge fan of. Firstly, the star-crossed lovers, it didn't bother me so much in this particular book but it still existed. Also there was so much information in the first 100 pages of the book. It was a bit overwhelming and confusing at times. Everytime a new character showed up, Indie would go into detail about their personality and the memories she had with them. It was just at first. Then the characters got to show us who the truly were with their actions and I believe that was even better. Also there was too much mystery, yes, I never thought I'd say that, but at the beginning we had a million questions, so many sometimes I forgot some of them until the authors would mentioned them again. I love mysteries and it was fun to find the answers to Indie's past, but I believe that the mystery along with the too much info on the characters was just overwhelming for the first few pages.
Still, this book was a very fast read. After I got over the first 100 pages then I got more comfortable into the world Magee created and was glad to follow Indie around to see what she would find out and how she could save herself and everyone else.
This is my first Jamie Magee book and I truly enjoyed it. It is apparently a tie-in to the Insight series, which I am now going to have to check out!
The characters in this story are very well-developed. There were times when I was so engrossed that I forgot reality! She creates such real characters that I, as a reader, felt their emotions, their motivations, their thoughts. I had perfect mental images of each and every one of them. Protagonists or antagonist, there was an air of believability and humanity about all of them. This went a long way to creating an a real depth of understanding between the reader and those in the story.
The settings and surroundings were just as believable as the characters, with every single detail used to create an easy graphic image. I love, love, LOVE not having to wonder at what the world is like, preferring to experience it as the characters would! The writing is very lyrical, and the story is well paced.
I think I am going to read the Insight series and then reread this for a more complete appreciation of the story and its characters!
Things to love about Rivulet...
--Character development. It was so well done that I felt I knew these characters their faults and good traits alike. --The imagery. I appreciated being able to see the world through the characters' eyes as they would see it. --Writing style. There is an easy, lyrical flow to the author's writing that I really enjoyed.
My recommendation: A must read! I read it without having read the Insight series and didn't feel as though I was missing anything. So I feel like it could be read on its own, although this opinion may change after I read the series!
I was given this early to read and review, and it was so hard to create something without giving too much plot away. This book is an amazing addition to Jamie's series already, or it is amazing as a stand alone book. The characters are believable; you feel as if you are in their group of friends, and the setting is detailed enough where you can picture it without any problems. Hold on tight with this one. Lots of twists and turns where you think you know what's going to happen next, but you don't. Jamie Magee's intricately woven web of souls continues with the introduction of the icy Indie. Genevieve Indiana Falcon has had a difficult upbringing, made even harder with her uncle's new wife, Mrs. Rasure. It's Indie's tight knit group of friends that helps her through her darkest hours and keeps the cold from consuming her. A certain lavender haired friend gives Indie a priceless gift that becomes Indie's touchstone. Until it's red hot owner wants it back. The story continues as a nightmare comes to life and Indie finds out people aren't who they seem, and that the past has a tendency to find itself in our present lives again. Jamie Magee has outdone herself with this installation to her web of souls series. Unique plot lines, beautifully written characters, and a fiery, passionate love story that can melt the thickest of ice will have readers clinging to their arm rests in anticipation while eagerly turning the pages of Rivulet. Best of the series, or a great point to start reading her books if you have yet to start. This is a must read.
This piece of the story starts out a little confusing, because it is not strongly tied to the rest of the story until further into the book. That being said, I love Indie and Phoenix. We also get a better look at Skylynn in this book and I am so looking forward to her and Aden's story.
Fascinating read. Complex world and a bit of a muddled narrative, I found myself confused and lost at some points. The detail can be hard to grasp but the premise and story arc are just so wonderful. Magee really makes the reader work for it and it pays off.
Rivulet by Jamie Magee, todays review, was provided to me through none other than NetGalley, of course, and Alvasia Publishing. Now when I saw this book the cover caught my eye. The first thing I did was check if it was in a series and if it was book one. I’ve requested books realizing after getting them they are like book three or four which does me no good until I’m caught up. Here is the semi-confusing part, Rivulet is book one in the self-titled series but also book 11 in the Web of Heart and Souls series which from what I’ve gathered on Goodreads has several series in it. I didn’t learn this until after reading and it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the book one bit. It just added ten other books to my TBR is all. The start of the book did state all the books saying: All series mingle at some point creating a “web of hearts and souls.” So read it as part of the whole or like me as the start of a new series that may mingle with others. Either way you will be fine! Promise.
Indie, our main character, is dealing with a lot. She has this curse; this cold that she can’t get rid of. It pushes people away from her and keeps her somewhat captive and isolated from all but a select few. Still she cherishes the visions, particularly those of a special guy that held her in a lost time, one she can never reach. She would give anything for that life. She has all of this to deal with while fighting over her inheritance from her evil Aunt who tries to take advantage of her grief. Her parents where unfathomably rich and had fostered several generations over the years.
Then one night she wakes from a nightmare, just like the one she had before she lost her parents, and knows something horrible is going to happen. Everything changes then. Oh and the one thing that keeps her curse semi-under control is taken back as her special guy, Sebastian, the one she is in love with from the visions, walks into her life in the flesh. Indie soon realizes that she has her work cut out for her and she may have to risk everything she was, is, and could be to do what she knows is right. Because she will do everything in her power to prove that no myth, spoken fate, or curse, is able to keep her from having it all.
In life he haunted her…in death she haunted him.
Love is eternal…
I was intrigued through the whole story and read it in about three days and have already bought the first could of books in the overall Web series and look forward to starting them. Clearly I enjoyed the book or I wouldn’t bother right? I found Indie and her dilemma interesting. Sure there were times when I didn’t agree with her or her actions but she is impulsive and I respect that. Sometimes impulsive people do stupid things, I speak from experience. Besides you can’t help but feel for her with everything going on. You cheer and cry for her. Her close network of friends and the way they interact felt natural (minus the supernatural curse part of course haha). Falling into things that are expected then realizing it wasn’t meant to be but not losing anything.
Then you have Sebastian. Oh yummy. First we fall for him like Indie in her visions. Then when he appears in the flesh there is definite chemistry and sparks. They don’t see eye to eye with lots of things in the way, but one thing is clear they have something real, something more than a vision. Sure he is a bit pig headed but he’s a guy and like so many of our beloved book boyfriends he has some brooding to do and that only adds to his appeal.
As mentioned the story is pretty fast paced. There is a LOT happening. I give this book a solid 5 Stars. I look forward to reading more books in the Rivulet series as well as catching up on the other books by Jamie Magee and seeing what connection Rivulet plays in the overall Web of Hearts and Souls series overall.
Rivulet is a beautifully written, well packed with imagery book that I could not put down. The plot is captivating and thorough, and the characters are strong and extremely believable.
Indie, the main character, is a very special girl. She is strong and witty, and she can also turn anything into ice through her mind. Sounds a bit like Frozen, but I promise you that other than the turning anything into ice part, nothing else is the same. Indie is the last adopted Falcon child, and therefore all the family's wealth goes down to her as her parents and sisters died in a boat accident. Unfortunately, like Elsa, Indie can't control her ability and often finds that she unconsciously turns things into ice when she feels emotional. This is a problem for her, as her gold-digging aunt, Rasure, is trying to find a way of convincing the judge that Indie is not mentally stable enough to inherit such a fortune, and being able to turn things into glaciers definitely fills that bill. She has to be sneaky and hide her ability as best as she can from her aunt. Indie also has another magical power; she can see images when she touches things in her household. Some of those images include past memories with her parents and sisters, as well as older scenes of a time that she believes had been hundreds of years ago. However, what baffles her is that in some of those older scenes there is a handsome guy named Sebastian who is hopelessly in love with a girl she sees every time she looks in the mirror; her. The girl looks like an exact image of her, and that confuses Indie as she doesn't remember ever knowing- better yet falling in love with- a guy named Sebastian. Nevertheless, she still feels a strong pull towards Sebastian, the guy that she doesn't recall ever knowing.
Other lovable characters in the book are Mason and Gavin, two of Indie's past lovers. They are exact opposites; Mason is playful but daring and protective, while Gavin is quiet and cautious. They are both fiercely loyal to Indie as her friends, and continue to help her throughout the book. Another character that Indie is close to is her adopted sister, Cadence. Cadence is psychologist in learning, and is seemingly a supportive sister to Indie. There is also Skylynn, who everyone but Indie can't see. Skylynn had saved Indie when she'd almost gave up years ago, and since then she has been one of Indie's closest friends. Skylynn also lent Indie a bracelet that helped her somewhat control her ice abilities. Lastly, there is Wilder, who is another of Indie's failed lovers, yet Indie does not feel as comfortable around him as she does with Mason and Gavin.
The pacing of the book is consistent, and there were no plot holes that I could pick out. Character growth is clearly shown for a lot of the main characters throughout the story. There is also a major plot twist that I definitely did not see coming. I did sometimes feel slightly confused as to what was happening in the text, but I was able to quickly catch up. I certainly did enjoy reading this roller coaster of a book, and I am excited to read the next one in Indie's journey.
I finished this beauty at almost 3 am, it's 11 now and I'm in withdrawal!!
I feel like, in terms of plot, this book is the most carefully crafted from the ones I've rerad. Everything changes (not in a confusing way ofc), you just don't know what to expect. The reality of the story unravels itself almost like a detective novel, while Indie tries to makes sense of what's happening to her. And that's why I'm in withdrawal! This aspect of the book was so good, but Indie is very independent and my heart aches for more Indie-Pheonix moments, the few scenes we got were not enough!!
Seriously, these two. Their dynamic is very different from the other couples in the series and I really appreciated it. If you've read my other reviews, you've probably seen that I don't really like when the girl is blind to what's happening but the guy is always in the know. Well with this pairing, even though Phoenix has all his memories, they are both disturbed by what's happening, or their past. They both make make mistakes, have false beliefs, etc. And I'd dare to say that Phoenix has more.
Indie is the strong one here, she's determined, she wants to be with Phoenix and understand what's happening to her and her friends. Phoenix's attitude might seem surprising when you've come to know him from the other books. We see a complete different side of him. The scorching rock he was in the Insight books just MELTS when Indie arrives in the equation. And who doesn't love a fearless warrior getting vulnerable, huh ?
We also see a lot more of Skylynn, another side of her. It was very nice, considering Willow is not a fan of her, seeing her with Indie's POV was refreshing ahaha. She shows how selfless she can be and I hope Phoenix will give her a break now...
This review is already too long so I'll wrap up in one paragraph. Rivulet is a story full of surprises that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This "family of souls" (hello Charlie) just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Indie is the fire and ice they needed to fulfill part of their destiny. Rivulet is her and Phoenix's new beginning and first real step together in this war of light and dark...
I was really looking forward to reading this book when I received it. Young Adult Fantasy? Right up my alley.I have been introducing myself to the world of fantasy lately and have been enjoying it for the most part. I am sorry to say this wasn’t one of my favorites, and has become the second book in my “Life is too short to read books you don’t want to read” new life. At the beginning of the book, I found the story line to be confusing and hard to follow. You are introduced to a lot of characters very quickly, and I found myself struggling to keep up with who was who. Now don’t get me wrong, we aren’t talking about Song of Ice and Fire type character introduction, but I still felt there was no real difference between between each of the people so telling them apart was, for me, almost impossible. The girls I got a grip on fairly easy, but the boys were just a mind boggle. Even now I couldn’t tell you their names, or their different personalities. All I know for sure (I think) is they all dated the main character, or at least tired too? That was my understanding anyway.
Also the main character sees a character that no one else can, and she seems to not get that much understanding from the people around her, until one of the boys sees this character too. But he makes no reaction. It kind of baffled me, and left me a little frustrated. Maybe this is one of the “Weird things that annoy Diesel” but I just thought it seemed pretty unbelievable that he would not have any reaction in the slightest to this disappearing girl.
Between struggling to keep up, and having characters brushing over story lines, after 10 chapters I felt I had given the book a fair go and decided not to continue.
Would I recommend this book? Well considering I couldn’t follow along enough with it to even finish, I’ll say no. But as always if you do read it, let me know what you thought.
I was honored to be offered a copy of this book to review. I had heard some very good things about this author, so of course I had to jump right in. This is a-pun intended- riveting story. It’s an easy read because the writing is well done, and most people will connect with the characters easily. Plus, I think a lot of people will like it if they’ve read anything by this author previously, though I haven’t, YET!
So the story starts with Indie, having a terrible dream, and when she wakes, you learn she has some “gifts” or maybe curses LOL, and that she’s not having the easiest or most comfortable life. She also has a, I’ll call her this for now, “fairy godmother” that appears, except without the gifts, she’s mainly there to try to “talk wisdom”. LOL Yes, I am leaving it spoiler free and vague on purpose. Things are complicated for her, but she knows she’s not crazy, and she also will NOT let anyone take her home or hurt her friends. I like her determination. I also like that she has a temper LOL But she has some cool friends who stick by her.
If I am to understand, this book will also coincide with her other series, again I haven’t read that yet, but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything, so I vote it can be read without the others, though after I read those I may change my mind. LOL The plot is well written, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters have excellent background and developement. And there are now some excellent characters and plot schemes to continue for the next book. I am seriously hoping somebody gets their “what’s coming” as bad guys should always have some kind of karma :) I really enjoyed this one, and I hope you guys will take a look into it too. 4 PAWS!
I have read a previous work by Jamie Magee, Edge, and really loved it so I was excited to get to read something else from this author. The style of this book was similar to Edge in that it was paranormal, but took it to the extra level. This novel though was so much more confusing to me than her other work. That's not to say I didn't like it. I did. It was just very confusing at times.
I think some of my issues were just that some things seemed to move very quickly and I kept having to re-read parts to understand. It seemed like there was a continuation of problems arising and they would then to get pushed aside then more would arise. Indie just kept saying they would deal with everything later and it got a little annoying. Again, it was just really confusing to me. If I read it again, it might make more sense.
I did like this book, I just don't know if I could tell you why I liked it. I read the entire thing and I wanted to keep reading, mainly because I was hoping some things would be cleared up. The story was also sorely good, its just that I really didn't get it sometimes. Some parts were confusing on purpose and I get that. I really liked the secondary characters and those relationships. Sebastian and Indie relationship was different and I didn't like that there really wasn't a process of showing how they fell in love, just that Indie had seen it over the years. The dual dimensions were confusing. I think by the end of the book there are questions that were answered, but some were not. Hopefully in the sequels more questions will be answered. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had simply forgotten how much I enjoyed Ms. Magee and her books. I had read Insight series. Loved it, I have no excuse! This book was no exception. Her writing style and development are amazing. She draws in and you uncover what you need piece by piece. She captured each nuance and simply built the perfect foundation for the story. The story has so many wonderful and creative characters - you are transported into the world she has written page after page. Indie's life is not easy. She has had a "difficult" life so far, mostly due to the horrible Mrs. Rasure. She is just awful! In spite of this Indie and her friends are close. They are her touchstone and I felt the relationships were genuine and loved the dynamics. Enter one Lavender haired friend and a gift of sorts. That sparks an interest.. So to speak. Sometimes things are not what you think and your darkest hour is still to come. Twists, turns.. Wow! When I thought, I know what's up. Yes.. Nope not at all. Bamboozled! I was caught up.. Reading it page after page. It was beautiful and touching. Passionate and even at times I felt longing. If you have not read any of her books, what are you waiting on? Get to it.. Get lost. Indie, Cadence, Mason, Gavin and Wilder are waiting at Falcon Manor. Trust me you don't want to keep them waiting long! Bravo Ms. Magee!
There was so much that could have gone wrong with Rivulet. The nature of the story in itself is very confusing (though I realise that it might have been more so for me, because this was my introduction to the Web of Hearts and Souls books), and that could have easily made it too convoluted and difficult for the reader to follow. Luckily, Indie was a superb narrator (though she does take 'unreliable' to the next level), and kept me hooked throughout. I wanted - nay, needed - to know how her story would end. Her connection to Sebastian kept me wanting to know more - was what she was seeing just an echo, repressed memories or a past life? And what had happened to the sinfully hot and amazing Sebastian? But most of all, I loved Mason and Gavin. I loved that they had this amazing, lighthearted relationship with Indie, and set up a little "club", to quote the woman herself, to talk about how to get over her. It was funny, and kept the balance between the whole good/evil battle, keeping the book light when it threatened to start getting too philosophical and heavy.
Also, that plot twist! Holy mother of plot twists! I mean, I knew who the "wolf among the sheep" was, but that? Did not see that one coming. I'm really curious to see where the characters are headed next - there's some awesome room for good stuff to come, and I can't wait to see more of Sebby :)
Firstly I would like to thank the author & NetGalley for kindly providing me with a copy of Rivulet to read and review.
I would love to read ALL the Web of Hearts & Souls series to see the bigger picture, this one is just a fragment although it can be read as part of the Rivulet series. I must say I have started and read Insight already :)
I loved Indie - she is dealing with this out-of-this-world icy gift that she doesn't understand fully yet, she does had her ways and trinkets to try and handle it so she can try to get on with her life but that suddenly gets turned upside and she has to make some devastating decisions, which way will she go?
I literally couldn't put this down, especially when the mystery hot hunk turned up and turned the whole plot on its head. This is not just another reincarnation book, it is so much more!
There is a lot I could say about this book, I sooooo want to gush about it but everything is linked and I could give away something. This is definitely a page turner, it’s mysterious and emotional, it’s filled with twists & turns.
The passion is a main part of what keeps the reader from wanting to put the book down.
The characters are likeable, lovable which helps create an understanding for the reader.
This is a deep very deep story . Book 1 by the author . It's a paranormal one . There are many layers to the story . This story is about Indie. Indie knows she was adopted . Indies life is always Cold . Indie lost her adopted family while they sank on a boat. Only she and an adopted sister survived . She can never get warm . And she dreams while she is awake . Little does she know that those dreams is evil coming after her . She suspects her aunt is trying to drive her crazy so she can take the house . Indie will do anything to save the house ..... It was her parents house . There is one part of the house that brings things to mind . She sees her life long ago with a husband. She lost her husband with his brother when they went to fight evil . She has 3 friends that are with her that will play a big role in the future While she is outside a magical being comes and talks to her . And explains some things to her . She also explains that her aunt has been around for centuries and she is pure evil . One day her husbands spirit comes to her and he is a phoenix . Way to much to tell now it will spoil the story . Let me just say one day there is a car crash with a train and she and all her friends are drowned . There are lots and lots of surprises and twists in this story .
I was honored to receive an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. I really love Jamie's main characters in this book. Her character development of all characters is phenomenal. I appreciated every character's motivations and I could picture them in my mind with great detail. Jamie is able to create a passion between important characters that is rare. The passion is a main component of what keeps the reader from wanting to put the book down. The characters are likable, lovable, and even the antagonists have a humanity, which helps create an understanding for the reader. The plot development is steady and well paced. Imagery is clear and creates a colorful , detailed picture in the mind's eye. In the end, the main characters were people that I felt like I would want to be friends with. I am a sucker for all manner of positive passions and this one has plenty. I strongly recommend this book to all readers. Jamie is the best at creating worlds in which love, loyalty, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and hope rule. All of her books contain these qualities. I loved this book and I know others will too. Ms. Magee is a giant talent with a dazzling imagination.
This book was one hell of a roller coaster. At first everything seemed off, the emotion, the places, the passing of time. You get totally thrown in the action and somehow remain there. There was a lot happening and a lot of details changing. This book is definitely plot based and the plot is really complex. It was a nice exercise to read it, I really enjoyed following Indie through her journey of life and death. I think it was just brilliant. I have trouble to actually explain what I liked about the book without ruining it for everybody because if I give too much details that's not fun for the next reader. So I liked the relationship between the characters even if I couldn't help myself thinking "too much exes around." I liked the romance part even if I'm not sure I like the romantic interest. At the same time I'm not a fan of a strong female character needing male protection. The sister interaction was nice, I would have liked to see a lot more family interaction though or memories. But the plot was one of the most savory I read since "Crown of Midnight" even if in a different way.
Loved the characters, loved the story line, loved the writing - character development, plot, etc... just LOVED!
If you have read the Insight and See series, then you will especially appreciate Rivulet (and, if you haven't read them, why not!? You're missing out!) It was great to be able to see this background story about Phoenix, his lost/found love, and Skylynn plus some new and interesting characters added to the mix in this one. It gives another perspective and a deeper understanding of Jamie's other series. I've really enjoyed how well both series, and this new book, compliment each other and help to immerse you in this world. Jamie writes so well that these characters and their environment easily come alive and can be so vivid in your imagination. It's so easy to forget the world around you and get lost in these books. It will definitely provide hours of great (and cheap!) entertainment as you travel along the roller coaster of events occurring that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
I can’t wait to see Indie mix with the Insight crew, especially Willow. They were friends once and I can’t wait to see what adding the Falcon’s into the mix will bring.
There were so many twists and turns to this story you never knew what to expect. Jamie Magee slowly revealed to you what she wanted you to know. She didn’t just dump everything on you at once. She slowly peels back the layers. Once you think that you understand something, BOOM, something knew is dropped in your lap. The way she does it pulls you from the reality you are in and brings you into the Web of Hearts and Souls. She pulls you inch by inch, detail by detail and you don’t even know what happened. This book pulls you in and keeps you. It won’t let go and you think about it for days afterwards. There is nothing better than a book that can do that to you.
So go out and get this book….this whole series. I promise, it is worth it!
I got this in the Dangerous Lovers box set. I loved Ms. Magee's first book "Insight" so I was exited to see this one in the box set. Unfortunately I didn't like it as much as I liked "Insight". I'm not sure what happened, but I just couldn't connect with the characters as much as I did in the first book. Throughout most of the book it felt like I was trying to enter a world that was just out of my reach. Instead of turning corners of the new world I was immersed in, I could feel myself forced out and faced with having to turn pages to keep going. I like to be pulled in to where I forget I'm reading. This book made me aware of what I was doing in this world. That being said, while I liked the conclusion that this story had, it just didn't do it for me like her first book did. I still like her writing enough to go back and continue the story after "Insight" though, so she hasn't lost me as a reader.
Bold and intense first scene gets this thriller off to a good start
Magee gets the action underway right off the bat in this thriller. Forcing readers to experience an emergency situation with her characters in the first page, she brings us into an intimacy with them. As we follow Indie, the main character, as she struggles for breath in icy water while trying to save her loved ones, we start rooting for her, willing her to survive, and this is a crucial ingredient for a fantasy thriller series to have.
“When death shadows your path, you only have one viable defense—adrenaline,” Rivulet’s opener reads. I think this is a powerful start and the rest of the excerpt begins to prove how thematically relevant this line is, and how lead character Indie is shaped by these two forces, death and adrenaline, or determination...
I didn't like this book so much. The idea of the story was good but I think it was a little chaotic. It was hard to follow everything that was happening. I liked India's personality— she is strong, independent and above all, loyal, and I loved the relationship among her, Gavin and Mason. It's like they knew each other better than they know theirselves and they were willing to do anything to protect the ones they loved. I didn't like the character of Phoenix. He was too passive, it didn't look like he fought hard for his love, he was willing to let her die thinking it was the best for India. I was surprised about Candace, I didn't expect her to be one of the bad guys and moreover to betray India after everything that India have done for her. Usually when I read a book and I like it I'm in a hurry to read the next one in the series but for this one, although I'm curious of what is happening next, I don't know if I'll read it or no.
Wow! Simply amazing!! I love Indie - she is dealing with this insane, icy gift that she doesn't understand, but she finds ways to handle it and is able to get on with her life. Plus she has some great friends that stand by her no matter what. Then there's the appearance of this mysterious boy that Indie is immediately drawn to. He is hotter-than-hot and makes Indie see things in a whole new way. Suddenly her whole world gets turned upside and she has to make some devastating decisions. She has vowed revenge on the evil aunt that has made her life miserable, but she will have to face betrayal along the way. It's just one thing after another for this poor girl but she digs in and fights back regardless of how unbelievable the circumstances. I loved this book more and more with each page - so much excitement & suspense - I just couldn't get enough!!
