Rate this book

Some day, a piece of media will convince me that I don't want to fuck the mothman. Today is not that day.
Regine Abel once again surprise drops a PMA novel and ruins my tbr and sleep hygiene.
I love the fascinating cultures and ecosystems in this series. The romance here is perfect. There's yet ANOTHER side character that needs a novella. There's illustrations.
The length of this was great! Just a few extra pages so the story and romance plots had room for each other.

The evolution of these stories has been very interesting to see

I'm conflicted about this one.

On the one hand this was unputdownable. I was absolutely glued to the pages, almost skimming in my desperation to know what would be revealed next.

On the other hand,

3.5 stars rounded up

I still find a lot of comfort in this series with the lower angst and that the main couples usually tend to work together to resolve some outside conflict or pressure. I really adored Atlas (H) in this one as he was this intriguing combo of competent and shy because he's an elite guard but part of an ostracized part of society and therefore not given positive attention or affection. Venus (h) was unique for this series in that she's roped into having to be on a primitive planet due to a specific circumstance and she has zero intention of staying on said primitive planet beyond the completion of her duty. She's also more high maintenance than some of the other ladies have been in the series, though she's also more technically skilled I felt because she had a background in science as well as diplomacy. The marriage that gets set up was also unique because of why Venus needs to be married, how the selection occurs, and how the development flows from there. I'm glad the author is doing new things to keep the series fresh.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, h was experienced, and H had no experience.

I did feel that the politics and the scientific elements of this particular planet did make the story drag in places and feel a bit overwhelming at times. There was just so much information about the different types of people, their magic, and technical names. That was before investigation into a possibly planet destroying phenomenon that added more layers. The added aspect that Venus had to walk a fine line between encouragement and engaging too much into a species that wasn't developmentally there was interesting though.

I thought the relationship was the stronger aspect of the story, but that it did get overshadowed by all the big picture plot portions. Still, how Venus supports Atlas and his people was interesting and especially how Atlas's character arc changed from a limited perspective to an eyes opened one. He deserved to be loved up on and Venus slowly showing him all the sweetness he had missed out on, which then gave hope to others like him, was adorable. Atlas also had a nice streak of taking charge that developed, which did also come out a bit in the bedroom too. Though the steamy times do take a while to build up to because of how the relationship has to simmer before it can boil given how dramatically unique it is.

There's a lot happening as the story gets to the final act and the climax had so many moving parts, but it also flowed well. I felt like everything was wrapped up and addressed at the end and Venus and Atlas each having an important moment was nice. The epilogue was excellent and left me satisfied and also smiling at their official wedding (though I did have questions about the incorporation of a certain element given that the planet was still technically primitive, but ok). Overall this was a good read, but it didn't give me that wow factor, except for how much I enjoyed Atlas.

I spent the whole night reading this because of how interesting it was.

Regine Abel really knows how to world build these fascinating places that make me want to go there😭👏🏾.

The way she writes her characters is the reason why I continue to read this series. Mind you nothing gets repetitive. It's all unique😭✨.

Some of the best sci-fi romance you’ll read…

I’ve been obsessed with this series since the beginning - every time a new book is released, I jump to read it!

📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: I Married A Mothman by Regine Abel

📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Prime Mating Agency character series. Book 12.

📗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: E-book on Kindle. 🆓 on KU.

📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Sci-fi romance

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Fish out of water, fun appendages, instalove, fated mates.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Venus is traveling when she finds herself saving and being bonded to a moth chrysalis. When she returns the chrysalis to its home planet, it won’t let her free. To stay there while the planet unwraps a mystery, she must be a citizen - which means marriage to the city’s head guard, Atlas.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: This series is my favorite. Clueless, simping aliens. Smart and talented female mates. A few laughs. Some solid spice, and just some really good writing.

I loved the fact that Atlas was almost a slave to his planet, in that it made it so much more emotional as Venus showed him affection. He was happy and vulnerable, and I love that in an alien.

This was a little long and a lot more sci-fi than the others, in that included very detailed explanations. I didn’t hate that part, but it felt like a steep learning curve on a new planet.

Otherwise, LOVED. Can’t wait for the next one

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: 3/5 🌶🌶🌶

This was soooo wonderfully complex and plumbed the depths of societal norms and hateful rhetoric. Atlas was a sweetheart with a sarcastic inner dialogue and a lot of negative self beliefs. Venus was diplomatically savvy and had a decent self image, though she wasn’t without her insecurities. She was also a reluctant main character, wanting to enjoy the life she had. That’s not to say she was selfish; she spent her career on worthy causes. She was constantly supportive of Atlas and never backed down from a fight. They worked well together.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: alien caste-like system of oppression, child abandonment (historical), trafficking, sentient being sacrifice/genocide, radiation, severe illness and euthanasia of animal, death of side character, poor self image, encouraged unnecessary medication, loneliness and depression

The usual sweet and sexy sci-fi romance from Regine Abel. A decent mystery to solve. I did struggle to find the sexy with this one when the alien peen was revealed! I laugh/cringed and wondered at the author's browsing history. Where does she find these ideas!?

Let's be honest...that was obviously and weirdly a Venus William & Mothman fanfic...

Regardless, the love story and world-building were quite good. despite the peculiar basis of the inspiration. This author is very talented at creating imaginative societies in which different cultures come in contact and conflict with the human fmcs experiences, and this book was not expected. I enjoyed learning and seeing this new society through the eyes of the protagonists.

The way this one plays out is AMAZING!!! I loved the world, and how light and color played such a huge part. The way that Abel continues to work with race and classism within her romances truly is a delightful surprise. I love seeing our recurring characters, and I'm sure we will be seeing more of this series soon in my reading. Just anxiously awaiting the next one!

Not enough relationship and too much world-building science stuff I wasn't able to follow. This also felt a little too on the nose as a parallel for what's happening in our world now. The Mothman was a sweetheart. He deserves 5 stars.

I’m sorry but I have to DNF this at 129 pages. Aside from the terrible dialog and just oddly stilted writing style, this latest addition to the series has even weirder white savior energy than the rest of the series, which says a lot.

There was a lot of off-hand weird diet talk that just made me uncomfortable.

Honestly, this series has really not held up for me as it’s gone on.

This is seriously one of the best series ever! 5 fabulous🌟's🔥🌟💖🔥

Regine Abel just never disappoints! This series has been one of my very favorites since I read the first book and I'm really hoping that she never runs out of material so that I can continue to wish that I too could ask the Prime Mating Agency to find my soul mate. In this book Venus Bello has just left a small visit with her sister Serena. While heading home on a star liner she feels a physic distress call that will change her life forever. She rescues a very rare species and becomes its bonded protector. That's when she meets Atlas. Atlas is what some may say a mothman. He's got incredible black wings and muscles everything for his is the head of security of the Capital. When the human brings back the prism to his people he finds out she the chosen protector and that she will have to stay and become a citizen through marriage. Venus pick him! She believes he is the only one that can help her and who can't s truly worthy . Together they must protect the prism, find away to stop a catastrophic event vent from wiping out most of Atlas's people and initiate a change in the way Freya n groups of people are treated in Promethean society. No small undertaking and yet their marriage becomes very real very quickly. And love, acceptance and genuine friendship is what will create a happily ever after. The world building is phenomenal as always. The characters have tons of chemistry and even the secondary characters are so entertaining that you'll hope she decides to write a book for them also. Highly recommend you won't be sorry! I'm just sorry that it had to come to an end! Fabulous and well worth reading🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟

Loved this one

It's amazing how Regine Abel manages to have the perfect ratio of romance, spice, intrigue, drama, and sci-fi. And this story doesn't disappoint. I love this intergalactic world and love all the beautiful images we get at the end of each book.
It has more actions than most of the other books, which makes it more thrilling. We also got to hear more about our favourite naga-human couple, too, as the story revolves around Serena's high maintenance sister, who happens to be an adpt politician and in STEM.

Spoiler: no remontó.

Maybe it's just that I'm getting used to this series, but overall I'd rate this just as...average. I mean, it's what you'd expect from Regine Abel: no more, no less.

This time, we have Venus as the main heroine, with her soulmate as Atlas, a mothman. There's an entire plot as the background to their relationship regarding Atlas's culture, but two things more or less kept it from being more engaging for me:

1 - the story itself felt...slow-paced, for some reason. I mean, at the beginning, it had me fully engaged and excited to see where things went, as the council room scenes were particularly satisfying! But, after that, as soon as Venus and Atlas are left together, you'd THINK that sparks would fly, but it's all kind of...restrained. I mean, on Atlas's side this makes sense, given his background and what he's been raised to think about himself, but whereas this left an ideal opening to have a strong heroine fully take charge, Venus's character was...inconsistent in terms of when she was a total boss and when she becomes a flustered cliche for no reason. I just...I'm not sure how to put it, but suffice to say that I expected MORE from her as a character, and never got it.

2 - also, even once the characters DO get together at around the 50% mark...I'm not entirely sure that I know WHY. I mean, I get that the author was maybe trying to avoid an instant attraction, which is fine, but in that case, the characters should really interact more and their psychologies explored more in-depth. For instance, one plot point that I wish was followed up more was

So...yeah. GOOD, for sure, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it "great". Not my favourite in this series, but overall pretty okay.

Serena has a sister, and her name is Venus!? I see you, author. I see you 👀

The Bello sisters couldn't be more different from one another if they tried it, and I love both in their own way. While Serena's simple, Venus is a high-maintenance girly who likes her hair and nails on point. And you know what's the best part of that? She didn't come off as entitled but just as this sweet girly-pop who wanted to show others how good it was to be pampered.

The lore in this one was both abundant and intricate, and while I thought it was intriguing, I think some chapters had too much exposition and repetition, which in turn affected the pace of the overall story. Don't get me wrong, some portions of it were pretty fun and I loved the mystery behind it all, but I also felt like the politics eclipsed all other aspects - especially the romance - which was a shame because I really liked both main characters.

3 stars. Enjoyable portions but a heavily political story that made everything else drag.

P.S.: My omphalophobic peers, there's a scene around 69% that made me scream and recoil in disgust. Please beware🥴

3.5 ⭐️

This book was definitely way more fleshed out and had a deeper plot than the previous ones, which was a pleasant surprise!

I found the premise to be interesting. I did get a little confused with all the terms sometimes but I was never totally lost and it came together in the end.

Atlas was a cute lil mothman learning his worth for the first time. Venus was his somewhat reluctant bride, really in his world to help out, but thankfully she doesn’t resist the thought of soulmates for very long at all.

I thought the romance was actually a little set aside at times because of the seriousness of the plot, but it didn’t bother me too much. I kind of liked that with such danger it wasn’t like oh let’s go be cheery, but they’re both working hard. There still managed to be cute moments, and really the angst was about the conflict and not at all between each other.

So I definitely enjoyed this one more than the last few!

Safety deets: no om/ow drama, Atlas is a virgin who really had repressed desire until now, Venus wasn’t but no specific details

Ok Romance, Bad Sci-fi

I had a hard time warming up to Venus who, in the beginning, came across as a bit whiny and self absorbed instead of the competent and diplomatic FMC that I was expecting. (Because the book repeatedly tells us how absolutely punt bottom she is without actually showing it) Venus acts very petulant upon discovering that she has been chosen to make a difference in Promethean society despite making a career out of helping other primitive species. She is told that she can possibly help avert a genocide and she still sulks at being chosen.

Even when Venus reluctantly agrees to the marriage, I had a hard time believing that she genuinely wanted to help these people without someone twisting her arm. The lady doth protest far too much and too often in this case for me to think otherwise. It's like she has very much decided that this isn't her circus and the Prometheans are not her mothmen. If it wasn't for the bond between her and the Prism, I doubt she would have stayed to help.

Oh.. Okay.. I think I just realized that Venus is the Han Solo of this story, but only if Han Solo was manicure motivated instead of profit driven?

Mentions of modern human slang, food trends and household appliances were peppered throughout the novel and kept breaking my immersion.  (cauliflower rice and warm laundry fresh from the dryer are among the worst examples) The FMC's POV is written with a lot of the same sensibilities and societal problems of a modern woman from the 2020's. (A.k.a The Dumpsterfire Decade) Which would have been just fine for a CR but is terrible for an alien romance set in the far future.

I temporarily got excited about the MMC learning how to do manicures and I thought it was a sweet way for Atlas to show care for Venus through acts of service. I am an indie and boutique nail polish aficionado myself, so I was really looking forward to reading some descriptions of futuristic nail coloration innovations. However, in that aspect I was sadly disappointed.

I also think some kind of message or point about "high maintenance women" and internalized misogyny was meant to be had here as well, but it was very muddled if so and never followed up on.

So in short, we are given a very lengthy description of a basic boring manicure that could have taken place on Earth within the past 50 (of our) years or so. Riveting.

I had an entire nail care driven rant typed out, but as I am a nail polish lover, not a fighter, I deleted it. Most of it. ... I may have saved a draft. To read over again when I am feeling particularly salty when I remember this scene.

And the MMC's hobby is miniatures? Okay, I can see how that fits with his particular subset of powers, but honestly, this story could be about a super ordinary human couple from earth because of the very bland and nondescriptive way both activities are written.

The "magic" system was also very bare bones and basically came off as magical 3D printing moth men who can do other stuff?

And then there was that bit with sexy moth Jesus at the end of the book that was just.. uncomfortable. Venus wants to "save" him all right. The FMC's interactions with the Prism were all so horny coded that it felt like the introduction of another love interest in a why choose novel. (I have read enough fallen angel romances that I get it, but this is a Sci-fi ma'am)  I felt really bad for Atlas because if anything untimely had happened to him, I feel like Venus had his replacements already picked out. (I remember how she perved on Acamon too)

So in conclusion, I don't think this novel knew what human decade it was from, what genre it belonged to, or how many love interests it actually wanted the FMC to have. I'll give it 3 "You didn't impress me much" stars.
