This Rotting Heart

Rate this book
A princess without a heart. A dying land. A king who will do anything to save his people, even force an alchemist to marry him.

Princess Hellebore loves nothing more than she loves decay. It is her specialty as an alchemist, and she expects her skill will serve her well when she one day takes her aunt’s position and becomes her brother’s alchemist.

When she risks crossing into Sun Elf territory and breaking the law to steal a Sunrise Iris for her studies, she’s caught red-handed and carried off to their capital. However, the last thing she expected upon arrival was to be thrust into a marriage with their king.

Their people’s animosity towards hers is a centuries deep wound, and there is no one who hates the alchemists more than King Taiyo. But something is deeply rotten, and when an alchemist is the only one who can save the Sun Elves, Hellebore has no choice but to be her husband’s alchemist.

The only benefit is that it means she is his wife in name only. She might give the charming elf her skills, but she will never give him her heart. No matter how hard he might try to win it.

This Rotting Heart is the third book in the Seasons of Legend series, a multi-author collection of romantic fantasy novellas designed to be read independently. Each standalone features a different season and retelling with an enemies to lover’s twist. In this spring tale you will find a Hades and Persephone reimagining full of alchemy and swoony no-spice romance.

Celeste Baxendell has always read anything she could get her hands on, but once she read her first fantasy novel, she was hooked and hasn’t looked back since.

Her love of magic, adventure, and romance hasn’t waned with age, and she endeavors to write nail-biting stories with compelling, complex characters, and finding light in dark times.

She is incredibly blessed to spend her time writing from her favorite chair with her legs curled up under her as she fights the southern heat. When she isn’t writing, she’s either reading, drawing, or sewing, in that order, and most likely thinking about writing as she does.

"Princess Hellebore stared at the collection of death she’d amassed in front of her, grinning."

Princess Hellebore is an alchemist and loves decay and death, especially among plants. She's looking forward to becoming her brother's alchemist when he becomes king, and take over her aunt's position. But when she risks crossing the border into Sun Elf territory to steal a Sunrise iris to practise on, she gets caught and hauled to their capital. Before she knows it, Hellebore is married to the Sun Elf king, Taiyo, who is in a desperate need of an alchemist to save his people.

Baxendell has put a fun twist on Hades and Persephone, where Hades get energy from the sun and Persephone is the one obsessed with death. I really love Hellebore's attitude and her constantly saying that the heart is simply an organ. Taiyo falls first, and their banter is so entertaining! We get some surprises along the way, but we all know how it will end...

"For someone so smart, you are so willfully blind. Do you not see how beautiful you are to me? Do you not realize the power you have over me? Have you not seen how any time you come before me in my people’s clothes and colors, you bring me to my knees? Not because you look like an elf, but because you look like you are mine.”

Earlier this month I read "Ties of Starlight" by the same author. This book takes place in the same world, but with another elven nation. We actually get to see king Nyrunn and queen Idonea from the Star Elves, since they are guests at the Sun Elf wedding. "This Rotting Heart" is also the third book in the Seasons of Legends series, where all books are standalones and written by different authors.

Oh my just WOW!! No words can accurately describe this book...I will try but you just must read it for yourself!

From the very start I was hooked and I never wanted to put the book down and when I did, I was thinking about it and wondering what would happen next. This book will keep you on your toes in the best way!

It's got all the enemies to lovers, slow burn, forced proximity and arranged marriage goodness, in a suspense, danger, emotion filled package! It's pretty fast paced, with high stakes to keep you engaged, and romance that will make you root for their happy ending.

Hellabore is a complicated, independent heroine who pushes all emotions down and only lets them out occasionally when no one can see it. Thoughts of worthlessness plague her, and she tries her hardest to be a cold empty shell to deal with all that hurts her. But deep down she really cares and will do everything she can to protect the ones she loves. She is very self sacrificing but is also strong, smart, and capable of whatever she puts her mind too.

Taiyo is an amazing king who will do anything for his people no matter what it will cost him. He is desperate but decides to make the best of everything. He shows Hellabore the kindness and love she's never been given before. I loved his character though he had his moments that were not so good, but he did what was right in the end and grew to see his mistakes, and the way he treats Hellabore is so sweet. He calls her sunshine 🤭when the MMC gives the FMC a nickname it's so much better!

Their relationship is full of backs and forth, ups and downs, learning to get past preconceived ideas and prejudice. It's full of sweet, caring moments that may even bring you to tears. I did get a little teary at parts towards the end. The way Hellabore opens her heart up is so beautiful and there is many emotions happening in this book, it's amazing.

The end has lots of action, small plot twists, and so much more I can't say or else I'd spoil it. But I loved the ending it wrapped up so beautifully I couldn't ask for anything more 🫠

Content: No-Spice/kisses only, suggestive comments between the married couple, talk of rotting from the inside out, wounds and blood described(not gory), kidnapping, near death experiences.

I recently received an ARC from Celeste Baxendell for This Rotting Heart, which takes place in the same original fantasy elf world as Ties of Starlight from the Tethered Hearts series. The book had a lot in common with Ties of Starlight and could have easily been another entry into the Tethered Hearts series. Both stories are about arranged marriages between a human woman and an elf king in which the woman is initially reluctant but grows to love her husband over time. The post-marital love trope seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of modern fantasy stories. This Rotting Heart contains many similarities to Celeste Baxendell's other stories, including romantic misunderstandings and characters being forced to make difficult decisions that hurt the ones they care about.

Princess Hellebore is an alchemist who is wholly devoted to her craft and wishes for nothing more than to study rotting plants day and night. When she is captured by the sun elves, she fights for her life but fails to escape before learning that she was selected for a marriage alliance with their king. King Taiyo reveals that he selected Hellbore for her alchemy abilities to save the rotting flowers that serve as the source of the elves' power. When Hellebore learns that the same rot also affects Taiyo's heart, she makes it her mission to save him as well. The two never intended to fall in love. It was merely meant to be a business transaction.

During her stay in the castle, Hellebore starts to uncover numerous secrets about Taiyo's past related to her family. Because elves live so much longer than humans, Hellebore's aunt had a history with Taiyo before she was born. Only by uncovering this history can Hellebore learn the truth and save the sun elves from losing their powers forever. The problem is that instead of staying focused on her mission, Hellebore finds herself distracted by nagging feelings she has toward Taiyo that she doesn't want or need. Meanwhile, Taiyo struggles to break through Hellebore's icy demeanor.

Although this is a spice-free romance, I wouldn't necessarily call it sweet. Like Celeste Baxendell's other books, the story centers around difficult decisions in which both Hellebore and Taiyo torment each other through the actions of themselves and others before they learn to accept their feelings. Both protagonists are cynical and dark through their personalities, values, and goals. Because of that, this book is not for everyone. However, if you prefer fantasy stories with mature themes but no mature content, it could be your perfect match.

In This Rotting Heart, Celeste Baxendell weaves a twisted tale of reluctant love, ancient secrets, and the transformative power of acceptance. While the story shares similarities with her previous works, its unique blend of fantasy, alchemy, and complex characters makes it a compelling read. With its mature themes and spice-free romance, this book will appeal to fans of fantasy and romance looking for a story with depth and nuance. If you're drawn to complex characters, morally ambiguous decisions, and a slow-burn romance, This Rotting Heart is definitely worth adding to your reading list.

I forget who recommended this to me—but I LOVE YOU. This book was… *screams in incoherent fangirling* Too cute for words. 😍

Taiyo and Hellebore were ridiculously adorable. It’s a bit of a reverse grumpy x sunshine because Hels is the prickly sort who takes some warming up to, and Taiyo is the utterly besotted one and an absolute GEM. The YEARNING! The BANTER! 🔥🤭

I love a good marriage of convenience/arranged marriage scenario, and the stakes involved in this one had my heart racing. Never fear, there is an HEA, but I was on the edge of my seat the last 20% because stuff was getting real. 😂

So yes. I’m a huge fan. Did I nearly lose it with excitement when Celeste gave us the tie into her Ties of Starlight book? Absolutely because authors connecting their books give me life. 😂 This book took some of my favourite things—grumpy girls, arranged marriage, green flag guys, high stakes action, and deep emotional connection—and made my day!

*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a eARC of this amazing book**

I picked up This Rotting Heart expecting a fascinating blend of alchemy and fantasy, but I got so much more—a powerful story of hidden betrayals, deepening devotion, and one of the most satisfying happily-ever-afters I’ve come across in a while. Helleborne’s journey is marked by personal walls she’s built up over time—walls that slowly crumble as she fights for her kingdom and her husband, King Taiyo. By the end, I could feel every ounce of relief, love, and hope pouring off the page.

Without spoiling too much, a shocking revelation about her beloved Aunt Palladia sends Helleborne reeling. That twist ratchets up the emotional intensity, highlighting just how far she’s willing to go to protect those she cares about—even when it means sacrificing her own safety. But the core of this novel is, ultimately, about a blossoming relationship that overcomes fear and pride. Chapter 27 nearly brought me to tears, and the final chapters left me with a deeply contented heart, proof that the author knows how to deliver a happily-ever-after that feels both earned and authentic.

If you love stories where court intrigue, magic, and romance meld seamlessly—and where emotional walls come down to reveal a genuinely sweet, triumphant love—you’ll find This Rotting Heart both gripping and heartwarming. It’s a book that left me smiling long after I turned the last page.

Y’ALL. You 👏🏻 all 👏🏻 ohmygosh this BOOK 📕 I was SUCKED in. Celeste has quickly become one of my favorite fantasy authors ✨ her banter, dynamic characters, and story telling are perfection, and this one was just 💋 chefs 💋

Hellebore. A persephone 💐 character OBSESSED with death 🥀 the first line of her POV had me shocked 🫢 like WOW YOU GO GIRL 👏🏻 her character was so unique 🖤 She was thrown into a horrible situation and I loved the way she handled it 💗

Taiyo. A Hades character 🖤 with sun powers ☀️ (SO COOL RIGHT?!) the depth of emotion this man shows through just body language (it’s only the FMCs POV) was INSANE. He’s carrying the weight of his kingdom 👑 and is willing to do anything. But he doesn’t except to fall in love with his alchemist wife 🧪

Guys. He falls first but she falls harder is THE TROPE OHMYGOSHHHHHHH 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 there were so many other AMAZING ones (but I’ll let them suprise you 😘) and the SLOW BURN 🔥was SMOLDERING 🫠 and not only the romance, I was SO INVESTED in the non-romance plot of saving the kingdom and the plot twist?! I was unwell 🫠 the last few chapters are completely highlighted 😂

Anyways. GO READ THIS it is absolute perfection 💋

⭐3.50

First of all there were so many lines worth highlighting! This is one of my favorite quotes.

"Don't apologize. Just say it. Again and again, say it until you lose your voice, and when you lose your voice, scream it just by kissing me until there is nothing else, and when you can kiss me no longer and you are too tired to even lift your arms to hold me, I will hold you and listen to your heartbeat and I will hear your heart whisper in every steady beat."

It was definitely different then most of Celeste's other books. This wasn't one of my favorites but it was still a good time. I read it in two days. 🤭Thank so much Celeste for the ARC. ❤️❤️

If more people want to support Celeste she has a YouTube channel and a website that is worth looking into. ❤️

⭐ **4.5/5 Stars**

Celeste Baxendell delivers an enchanting romantasy in *This Rotten Heart*, blending romance and fantasy into a fast-paced, addictive read. Though short, the story is packed with enough depth to make you fall in love with both main characters.

The romance is beautifully developed, balancing tension, banter, and emotional depth. The characters feel alive, their chemistry undeniable, and the world-building—while not overly complex—sets the perfect stage for their story. The book wastes no time on unnecessary fluff, making every moment count.

If you’re looking for a quick but satisfying romantasy that hooks you from the first page, *This Rotten Heart* is a fantastic choice. It’s the kind of book you devour in one sitting and immediately wish for more!

Y’all don’t even know the beautiful story you’re getting into. 🖤🖤🖤

I have a deep love of any standalone that Celeste Baxendell writes, and this one did not disappoint! I received an ARC copy of this book for free, devoured it …and I’m about to launch into a reread!

I’ll admit, the title was a little off putting to me. But after finishing it, it’s totally necessary for the story. However, be aware that you THINK you know what the “rotting heart” is referring to. But think again! This story has mysteries wrapped in enigmas, and you’re just along for the ride. ;)

Maybe it was just me projecting, but watching Hellebore struggle so much to try and see her worth really struck a chord with me. I connected with her because she believed her only worth came from what she could DO. It was really special to have Taiyo show her that she, as a person, is inherently worthy of love. Just like we all are. 🫶🏻

Other things for you to look forward to:

- THE YEARNING. Tayio was a goner. He’s such a softie. 😭🫶🏻
- Mystery disease killing plants…and an alchemist desperate to save them.
- A brilliant FMC.
- People who can change their minds and opinions about their enemies.🫶🏻
- Swoony romance, you won’t miss the spice!

Hellebore and Tayio were an insanely good match. She was the grumpy in their grumpy/sunshine relationship and it was both hilarious and adorable. 😂

I really loved this book so much. We all love in different ways and watching these two fight for each other brought me to tears. It’s a lovely story, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 🖤

I wondered how in the world a title about rotting hearts would apply to Celeste’s fun writing style, but it actually fits perfectly along with the story.

Without her knowledge or consent, soon to be alchemist graduate Hellebore, Princess of Chymes has been promised in matrimony to Taiyo, king of the Sun Elves. Having snuck from the Academy and onto Sun Elves land, Hels is hoping to grab a Sunrise Iris, a magical plant from the Sun Elves’ realm that is sacred to them.

So when she is captured by a group of Sun Elves having dug up a precious plant and then trying to use her alchemy to escape, she has few options before her: either she will be held for ransom or killed for using her alchemy against the elves, she is hauled to the capital city to stand before the king.

When Hels is informed of her upcoming nuptials the next day she is shocked to be handed a letter from her father insisting she marry and that returning home will mean treason and the noose.

What’s a girl to do?

Turns out there is something wrong in the Sun Elf kingdom and it just may take every alchemist skill Hels owns to try to save the day.

Hellebore is a fun character to tag along with- curious, cocky and a single mindedness that gets her in her way more often than not. She’s certainly courageous with a keen mind for research, and it’s a perfect fit against Taiyo, who shoots more from the heart. Together there is a beautiful balance and you can’t help but wish her heart would soften towards the guy.

There are mysteries to discover, secrets to reveal and a villain you will absolutely hate. Plenty of action and banter as well.

4.25⭐️ ARC Review: Arranged marriage you say? Sign me up every time! I absolutely ate this up. I think I’m just a sucker for a married couple. Like if it has no plot, I’ll still probably like it if they are married lol. Most of the time. But this one does have a plot so that’s a plus!

I thought I was going to dislike Hellebore, but I really enjoyed her character. I thought she and Taiyo were so good together. They had personal character growth but also grew in their marriage, and I loved that.

The book does drag a bit while she is trying to find a cure for the dying land. But other than that I enjoyed the plot. It is rather short too. I also really really wanted Taiyo’s point of view. I think that’s where this book lacked.

There were serious, humorous, swoony, and heart wrenching moments (that chapter 27 though.
Tears). The best of all worlds. I'm such a sucker for books like this. A quick read that keeps you invested from start to finish.

This book is also a part of an interconnected world. It’s not a series though. But there are characters from Ties of Starlight that show up in this one for a second. It’s cool to see this interconnected world.

*Thank you to the author, Celeste Baxendell, for the complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Read if you enjoy:
- Arranged marriage
- Single POV (Hellebore)
- Enemies (annoyed) to lovers
- One bed

Content 💋:
- Kisses only
- No language

celeste knows how to write a man down bad and she wrote it DOWN. (that... was bad). i kinda wish this wasn't a part of a standalone series that has a recurring theme because it restricted the novel to it when it could've been so much more. with a wide set of side character and more insight to their pasts and interests and depth in general would've helped alotttt. still a solid book that i finished in less than half a day so kudos 👍

some eenie mini qualms bc.. im me:
- taiyo had heart failure but didn't show any signs of it? his heart was sluggish and couldn't pump blood well aka heart failure. where is the edema, the shortness of breath, the raised jvp? "he's an elf" oh so the laws of nature don't work there? she's an alchemist doing science shit? whats the logic in that
- are the sun elves japanese derived? taiyo and haruko are japanese names i think
- the villain was so obvious bc there were so few characters overall. also, taiyo was once engaged to her AUNT??? as emerson said, ew. could've left that out. also, needed more emerson.
- it was insta love, lets be honest. the whole relationship drama btw a married man and woman was eye rolling in a fantasy book
- a sad ending would've HIT. it should've ended with Hels dying. The bittersweet ending with taiyo recovering and living his long life alone... 10/10 but nooo, instead it took a generic route. not only did hels or taiyo not die, her lifespan got Extended??? boooo. boring

Ambitious princess Hellebore wants nothing more than to be the royal alchemist for her brother, the heir—but when conflict with the sun elves escalates and she is found trying to steal one of their special magic irises, Hellebore is married off to the king of the sun elves to keep the peace and has to help exorcise the rot in his kingdom—and in himself. With flip flopped Hades and Persephone aesthetics, This Rotting Heart is the third in the Seasons of Legend series.

This is was my first time reading a Hades and Persephone retelling and I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The main female character Hellebore is a sassy, intelligent, head strong alchemist that enjoys death and decay. Even though her sense of humor was a bit morbid I truly liked her character! On the flip side of things you have the main male character King Taiyo who is strong, protective, and a literal ball of sunshine. The swoon moments were satisfying, the world building was magnificent, and the plot was perfectly written!

“You know… Hellebore, you must know I love you with every beat of this rotting heart. And you must say nothing. You will not say anything to me, do you understand? You will not pretend a heart is just something that pumps blood when you hold mine in your hands. You will just… Just let me love you.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Oh my goodness. Where do I start with this gem of a book?!?! I’m such a sucker for the Hades/Persephone tropes in books, and it’s always so refreshing to find one that’s so gorgeously done with no spice but all the tension and swoon!! The story begins with our alchemist princess, Hellebore, who is obsessed with figuring out the ‘why’ to everything. She’s more interested in how plants and flowers rot and wither, rather than survive. It is this morbid curiosity that takes her deep into enemy territory on her search for a magical iris in the land of the Sun Elves. Her journey goes horribly wrong, and she is captured by none other than Mr. Hot-as-all-get-out Taiyo. He was such a wonderful spin on the classic ‘Hades’ archetype. He was strong, mysterious, dark, but also so gentle and soft and sweet with her when he began to open up. He needed her for more reasons than he lets on, and discovering the ‘why’ with Hellebore throughout this story was so fun. I smiled, I kicked my feet, I audibly gasped during certain parts and I feared for their lives in many scenes. This was easily a five-star read for me, and I will be ordering a physical copy for my shelf.

Thank you to Celeste Baxendell for providing me with this ARC, congratulations on this new, BEAUTIFUL release!!

One of the easiest 5 star books I read recently.

This book had me hooked at page 1 and I read it till 3 am in the morning- it was not possible for me to keep it down.

The writing was superb, the plot unique and the emotions so high. By the end of the book, I was so close to crying my eyes out.

In one word: Brilliant ❣️

Looking forward to the next one book by Celeste 💗

This might have my favorite Celeste Baxendell heroine. She was fabulous. 10/10. I love it when a character has common sense and also refuses to fall into the "there was miscommunication so now I won't listen to you and now I hate you without hearing you out." I LOVED how that bit was handled. All the stars for that. Our hero was pretty awesome, too.

The plot was very cool, and I loved all the Hades/Persephone nods. (The jokes about the original tale's ick factor had me cracking up.) And the science lab angle was very unique and fascinating.

The only thing that turned me slightly off was the increased amount of innuendo. There was a little extra (as compared to this author's other works) and I did not care for that, personally.

Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling!

I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to leave a review, positive or negative. All thoughts and opinions are honest and my own.

I am always a succor for Hades & Persephone. But every other retelling I’ve ever read, the guy is death-personified, and the girl is life. This is the opposite, and it’s everything I didn’t know I needed.

With enemies-to-lovers, and arranged marriage, it checks all the boxes. Celeste is a pro at gut-wrenching, so prepare yourself. But she also excels at sigh-out-loud romance, so you can end the book feeling like you need someone who loves you the way Taiyo loves Hellebore.

Contains:
🌶️ Kissing, and some cuddling. But no spice
⚔️ Some fighting, death is talked about, blood is mentioned, but nothing graphic or gory
🤐 I don’t recall any swearing
🥰 Taiyo being possessive and calling her ‘MY wife’

I received an ARC copy. I loved this book, and cannot wait for others in this world.

This being my first Celeste Baxendell book (though I own some others and have many on my TBR), I was very happy with it!

Content warnings:

Language: N/A

Sexual content: Kisses and touching (legs, arms, hands, waist, etc.)

Violence and Gore: a few attempts at kidnapping, burns, bloody wounds, death, and poisoning

I have been dying to read a Celeste Baxendell book (and while I own a few there have always been others that I wanted to get to first)… so when I got this I was super happy!!!

I had a very hard time liking Hellebore at first. She was pretty self-absorbed and annoying, quite honestly. Rest assured, she does have quite a bit of character growth, to the point that you’re actually rooting for her! There were plenty of moments where I would start liking her though, and then she’d do something I couldn’t stand… but after a minute she stopped all that garbage.

I LOVE TAIYO!!! He was so sweet and funny, and honestly, though he definitely was in the wrong at parts, I could not dislike him. My only issue was that we didn’t have his POV. I love him, but I feel like he could have been a lot more fleshed out… you know?

As far as the plot goes, it’s mostly the romance. The plot is more of a side plot to the romance (which was fine). I wouldn’t expect any major surprises as it’s fairly easy to guess what’s going to happen (if you don’t though, good for you, you get more immersed into the story).

I would definitely recommend this book (I did to my sister already), and I found a lot of ADORABLE quotes in here!!! I don’t normally put quotes in my reviews, but I loved this one too much not too 😆:

“Hellebore told herself when she woke up the next morning the only reason she was smiling was because of how rested she was from sleeping a full eight hours. It had nothing to do with the way Taiyo was tracing “sunshine” on her palm.”

Like… IS THAT NOT ADORABLE!?!?

I thought I’d end up giving this three stars bc of the FL at the beginning, but she grew, and I loved them… so I gave it 4 stars.
The only thing I hated about their relationship was the fact that even though they slept in the same bed and snuggled and all that later in the book… Taiyo still couldn’t tell if she loved him (and apparently she couldn’t either). Like, y’all are that close… wdym you can’t find her heart? And girl, wdym you don’t know???

I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author, though all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Thank you NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Im not going to lie, I almost DNF’d this book multiple times. The writing was a little hard to get into for about the first 20%. Then after that, it felt like a completely different story and writing style. I did end up enjoying it overall. I do wish that the characters had a little more depth and purpose. The two man characters went from supposedly hating each other to flirting and cuddling too quickly. I think that if the author added a little more explanation and reasoning in the beginning, then that would make sense. Plus, Hellebore was just resigned to her fate without trying to fight it at all. That part didn’t make sense to me. The synopsis also said that she was obsessed with death. I didn’t get that feeling while reading it. However, like I stated earlier, I did end up enjoying this story overall for what it was. The concept was interesting. I would consider trying another one of this author’s books.

This was one heck of an emotional roller-coaster for me!! The plot (and plot twists), character development, drama, romance, etc., was so amazing!! Finished in a day, this has made it to my Top 10. Taiyo and Hellebore - my dream couple. The "he loved her first" and her in constant denial! *Chef's kiss*

Some books have a tendency to make it cringy and just not compelling to read, but Celeste wrote it so real, and I was left like, "What is happening!!"

Usually, I shy away from stuff like that because it is just very hard to write (trust me, I've tried), and I'm just astounded at how well Celeste weaves it seamlessly into the plot!!!

I recommend from the bottom of my heart!!!💖❤️

This was such a gripping and emotional retelling of Hades and Persephone and artfully captured the fear of not being enough in a tale that is wrapped with tragedy, mystery, and so many hidden secrets.

Can the skill of death and the power of light really combine to heal a curse and restore not only what was lost but also create something entirely new?

This story made me cry and smile. It is an exceptional addition to this new world that this author is building and I can't wait to read more!

Oh my, hello! That was my reaction from the opening sentence in this book and I expelled a loud breath when I realised it was not quite what I thought it was. This author does this to me in all her books, here I am, thinking I know which direction I'm heading and Celeste goes "Na ha, I'm taking you over an obstacle course"! And the "oh my" kept on coming! I was like tumbleweed being tossed about by this excellent author, trying to find purchase but she left me nothing to grasp onto, I was at her mercy to the end.

Although Celeste's FMC's are instantly likeable and relatable, her MMC's draw out something in me, I simultaneously want to hug them and comfort them, all the while falling under their spell, I honestly fall head over heels in love with them, as I did and am with Taiyo. I'm swooning, seriously swooning! The feels he awakens in me writhe like a pit of serpents in my stomach, clawing at me to be released so I do, slowly, tentatively. My word is he....NICE! He's so kind, he's so understanding and he's so compassionate. Heck, when he tells Hellebore "let me make myself clear, I care for you" the serpents still and fill me with so much warmth. The slow burn was extremely yummy and I sure as heck could feel that Hellebore wasn't just a means to an end for Taiyo, his.... affection seeps through with the vividry of the prose. A beautiful thing to behold, done flawlessly by Ms Baxendell, she doesn't tell me, she let's me feel it. So profound is her prose, I sobbed at this, I dare you not to...."I didn't come after you because I thought there was a chance you could save my life, I came after you because I couldn't bear to pass without you being the last thing my eyes see"

Hellebore (clever right???) is an alchemist, she's completely gaga with all things rotting and dying, she wants to understand why and how and her greatest wish is to be the King's Alchemist. But that's not to be. What is to be is, on her ill-fated quest to study a Sunrise Iris flower, she gets caught, she gets gets tossed about like a sack of potatoes and she gets betrayed by her own family. She is "sold" to the king of the enemy, she is forced into a marriage with him. But before you cry foul, yes, her family was duplicitous, the Sun elves are in dire need of her talent but when the REAL reason becomes apparent, well shoot, the pit of adders were full on consuming me! And Hellebore does what Hellebore does best, she retreats, she becomes outwardly unemotional, she suppresses all feeling, she encases her heart in a cage. She's quick to tell Taiyo countess times "the heart is just another organ" Except, seeing that cage start bending, the tightly clad bars slowly disintegrating, shattering, flip was that awesome! But, as I said, it's Taiyo who undoes me, over and over again, by all that is real, I had REAL tears in my eyes when Taiyo told Hellebore, "You must know I love you with every beat of my rotting heart". Yep, remember I mentioned tumbleweed at the beginning of my review? Well...... what I and Hellebore thought was truth, wasn't, this author pulled the wool over both our eyes. But wait! Then she did a 360, again! And then again...

Without a doubt, this author knows exactly how to pin me fast, this author knows exactly how to keep me riveted, this author knows exactly how to pace her books, this author is a definite must read!
