I thought it was a little cheesy. A woman flees to Canada to hide from her husband. You don't find out why until you are 3/4 through the book. What are the chances that another woman also is in hiding from the same man, lives in the same town? A little too much whale watching and Gaelicness for me.
The story of a woman who has taken her daughter and left an abusive husband to start a new, secret life in Nova Scotia. Only now her mother's health is failing and she must take the risk of returning home, meeting her husband, and encountering the detective who is still out to solve this missing persons case. This would make a great addition to the Lifetime, Stories for Women channel. But I never watch that channel. The whole time I was reading I felt like I was wearing rose-colored glasses. Too flowery, too dreamy, etc. etc. etc. I picked this up because I read a book agent blog where the agent was looking for more writers of this type. No thanks.
Lily Malone takes her daughter Rose, to Nova Scotia to escape form Rose's abusive father. She reconnects with her family and an old friend, who is a big part of her life. Lily will have to see her ex as, he is trying to get custody of his daughter
I felt that Luanne Rice had a little bit too much inspiration with not enough detail for multiple books, and so she decided to jumble 3 books into one.
The story of Lily and Rose was good. It was interesting, I liked hearing about her relationship with Edward. I liked the warning that was put in there. So many people have these little nagging doubts when in a relationship or before marriage - and they ignore it. It's just best not to. I liked her "escape", I liked her return.
Then you toss in Marissa. Ok, fine. While she might be a somewhat part of the story . . . Just - not really. I mean, what are the odds that they both live in the same town? In hiding? From the same husband? And then you just toss in the random stuff with the estrangement of her sister. Seriously?! Let's focus on one character. Unless you are going from two different perspectives on the husband thing. But, they didn't. She was hurt and broken, but that's where that ended. Rice just dealt with a sister relationship.
And if you aren't kinda going what? By this point. ADD: Random evil fisherman who likes to capture dolphins and whales. WTF!? Where?! WHAT!? And WHY!? He brings nothing to the story. He is not connected to anyone besides he wants a beluga whale that some other people happen to like. Where did that come from? And why did Rice feel it was needed? She could have skipped the evil man and focused more on Lily and Rose. Or Liam. Or even the fact that Edward tried to kill her Grandma????
Where did that end?! Oh Grandma is healthy again so we're just never going to mention that they are trying to get Edward for attempted murder? Cuz nothing could be found on him? As if something couldn't have been set up so that something came out of that.
But, no. What do they get him on? 21 yrs of child support!? Which - can they do that in court? I mean. . . I'm not familiar with the law. But, a DNA test just seems like a DNA test - and they wouldn't listen to the fact that he has another child. Or, maybe it could be. Helping set up that he doesn't want to be a father, so why require the test? But, then . . . . She quits the case. After handing out the evidence of the lack of child support. I just. Grrr.
I think if Rice could have kept with one plot and made it work - it would have been way better. Just saying.

the conclusion of Summer’s Child… i already read this last year, but decided to read it again after i finished Summer’s Child.. everything in the book made sense now after reading the first part.. i used to skim this book to find explanations for some events mentioned but can never find one.. it’s so nice to finally understand the whole story after so long..
Lily Malone, with her daughter, Rose Malone, and new found love, Liam Neill, returned to Hubbard’s Point to care for her ill grandmother, Maeve Jameson, and to face her past.. the happiness for Rose’s successful surgery was overshadowed by the fear and worry when Edward Hunter decided to return to their lives.. but all his evil plans to take Rose and hurt Lily backfired when family and friends helped Lily have her justice.. people from their past came back to ensure that Edward got his due punishment for hurting three strong women: Judy, Lily and Marissa..
meanwhile, Edward’s 3rd wife, Marissa (formerly Patricia), had also found her freedom in the same place as Lily: Cape Hawk.. they became friends who shared a common past and looking forward to a new future.. Marissa’s family suffered very much from Edward’s cruelty: her daughter, Jessica, lost a beloved puppy, and her sister, Sam, became distant both physically and emotionally.. but because of Patrick, the retired detective who found Lily, they were able to pick up the pieces of their lives and start again.. Marissa found in Patrick what Lily had found in Liam.. and the Irish music of the Ceili Festival (with a lot of help from Patrick) brought Sam and Marissa together again..
a very touching conclusion to a very touching story.. ms. rice was able to weaved different lives in one elaborate story.. Lily, Marissa, and Judy were all hurt and broken by Edward, but it was also because of this that they found their true strengths.. without that tragic past, they wouldn’t have found each other.. in the end, the women (including their children: Rebecca, Rose and Jessica) found strength and true love, and finally had that longed for “happily ever after”…
This is the continuation of the story in Summer's Child - and the author appears to be setting up other stories revolving around these characters and the town of Cape Hawk. It is a sweet story and truly the author is very good at that type. There are families of all types yet bound tightly; there is the lovely scenery of the coast of Nova Scotia and New England; and there's the dastardly bad guys getting their comeuppance. It is a great beach read/escapism - no one really cusses, there are good characters and bad characters and little of those who are some of both - so it's fantasy but fun fantasy. At least you know what to expect with Rice's novels.

Summer of Roses Book 2 by Luanne Rice Lily and her friend Liam are back in Hubbard Point, CT at her grandmother's house after she left to go to the hospital. They arrived from Nova Scotia where Lily had hidden out for over 9 years. Patrick Murphy is the detective who found her and informed her of her grandmother's illness. Lily is afraid her husband, Edward will find out and come get their daughter from her. Love reading about familiar treasured things: moonstones, flowers, sea life, sounds from the ocean, smells from the ocean Rose the little girl, thinks that the whale that grew up with her mom followed them to Canada to send them back home to be with her grandmother. They have tracking devices attaches and can be followed via the computer. The needlecraft shop up where she ran to was being looked after for her by many of the people she was now friends with who had a similar liking to the craft. One woman Jessica's mom, Marisa was waiting to hear from her sister, Sam who was in Peru to help others. They had a falling out a while ago and haven't contacted one another. Music also connected them and there was a musical fair in town. The investigator, Patrick had found Lily and he also was introduced to Marisa and she called him when he was offshore in his boat in CT to ask him to find her sister. It might cause major problems so she told him not to find her in Peru. Then she played him their favorite song on the fiddle. He fell in love. Lily's husband was evil, that's why she ran away to Canada. Lily thinks Edward had something to do with her grandmother being in the hospital also. She hoped she would come out of her coma so they could talk. Love hearing about the Ghost Hills as I've never experienced that nor the rogue waves that come with them. Marisa and Lily share something in common that holds the key to the whole investigation. And the big mystery of the dolphins needs to be solved... Loved how they all are connected with one another.
This was book 2 in a series and no where in the description or on the cover did it indicate it wasn’t a stand alone book. It started you right where I’m assuming the other ended and as a result I was confused as to the characters as they didn’t get the introduction In this book that they hopefully got in book one. I don’t know if it was because of that or all the different plot lines that were going but I couldn’t get into this book and was so happy when I finally finished it. Also trigger warning there is domestic violence in this book.
Glad to finally get to know the end. I didn't like the second book as much as the first.
The second was pretty repetitive. Not just in the beginning, where it recaps book one, but throughout the whole book. Phrases used earlier in the book were repeated two or three times.
I was browsing through ebooks available to me through my library and found Summer of Roses available to check out. So I checked on Goodreads for reviews, although I've read a few Luanne Rice books before and I'm glad I did because I realized this was a #2 book in a short series. So I checked out Summer's Child, which is #1 first since it was also available. I guess you could read them out of order, but I'm glad I read them in order because of the cast of characters and the story line. I enjoyed these two books. Luanne Rice can be a hit or miss for me. I read a lot, and sometimes I just want a good fiction book with a story that's easy to follow yet has a good story. I found that in these two books. Enjoyable books, easy to read, easy to escape into, nice cast of characters so 4 out of 5 for me.
Gripping read! In Summer of Roses, author Luanne Rice picks up where Summer's Child left off. Lily, Liam and Rose return to Hubbard's Point after learning Maeve is very ill. The town is in a frenzy and old friends resurface, embracing the young woman who disappeared nine years earlier. Meanwhile, Marisa and the Nanouk girls try to keep things going in Lily's absence and gearing up for the celli music festival. Marisa waits to hear from her sister Sam and the new tender love that she thought she would never find again. But enemies are lurking everywhere. Edward Hunter has found out that his wife he thought long dead has reappeared and so has a small girl with green eyes and brown hair. just like his. Rice pulls out all the stops in this page turner about second chances and going home again.
I really wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the first one, although it was pretty sappy and some events were a bit farfetched. At the end of the first book, I was excited to read Summer of Roses to find out what happened with Edward. I found it quite boring - and eventually started flipping through any chapters with Marissa and Patrick - I think the book could have been better without so much emphasis on those 2 characters. I would have liked to know more about the Lawyer Lindsay and her daughter - I don't want to spoil anything - but that would have been a much more interesting read. I was really glad there was no volume 3 because I am a glutton for punishment and would have bought it, and no doubt been disappointed. On the positive side, I have read other Luanne Rice books and enjoyed them very much.
Rating: 5 Stars!! Review: This was only the 3rd Novel ive read by Luanne but im really starting to enjoy her writing style and storytelling style.
The Characters were fun and interesting to read about. Lily/Mara was definately my favorite even tho she ran from her husband and changed her name in the process but there could of been other ways for her to deal with all that.
The Setting was so beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in Nova Scotia while reading especially when the scenery was described.
Overall a Good Book 2 in this Summer Series!! Can't wait to read more in this series and by Luanne in the future!!
When I want to read a feel-good book with a great story, strong women, some twists and turns...Luanne Rice is where I go to find one. This sequel to Summer's Child wraps up another satisfying series that warms the heart and strengthens the belief that there are still good. people in this crazy world. Love the women in both these books who will do anything to fiercely protect their own and fight for them to the finish. Luanne tells a tale with details of beautiful places that make you feel like you've traveled there and have a ringside seat.
Lily Malone, on the run from her abusive husband Edward, has found happiness in Nova Scotia, with a gentle man and her daughter who was fathered by Edward. However, she must return home to Connecticut to tend to her ailing grandmother. Lots of turns and other characters in the story. I had read Summer’s Child a few years ago, and I wish I had read it more recently, to link the two books together. For this reason, it was quite slow to start for me, and I found the story a little too sentimental for my taste.
This was a totally fine read in the car waiting for my kid to finish his hour-long class each day (it didn't make sense to drive all the way home). I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one, but the characters continued on and there was more resolution to the story. I enjoyed reading about the settings, the marine life, the Celtic music, and the tension over a dark figure from their past. I thought the addition of the marine-mammal-smuggling plot just confused things and didn't feel worth the effort when it petered out.
i think this is my only DNF of 2024. i wanted a break from the Literature with a capital L that i've been reading this year so i thought i could do modern?? romance???? whatever this is? i cannot. i got 30 pages in and i'm giving up. this is so cheesy and overwritten. what happened to showing and not telling? the summary of the book made it sound interesting but the only nicely written bits i found at least were the descriptions of the damn flowers and the sea. NOTHING in the book or on the cover says that this is part of a series either. good gawd. back to crime and punishment i guess.
This is one book that I practically breezed through. The plot was engaging and kept my interest so well that I read it in one sitting, only taking a short break to eat dinner. Each character was well developed and entirely believable. There was no lag of action and suspense throughout the book. While it addressed the topic of domestic violence, it was refreshing to have the women persevere and prosper.
I have not been able to get hold of Summer's Child, so did not have a great idea about some of the things that happened, BUT -- it was not so complicated that I could not figure it out. Another book with a lot of domestic abuse highlighted, but that's OK. We all need to be vigilant and aware. And I suppose it was predictable, but that is not a main issue in my life. Anyway, kind of fun at the end and the abuser was outplayed in court.
Luanne Rice never disappoints me. Her stores are so relatable. This story particularly reminded me of my life with my late husband. We had married too young and had children right away. Neither of us new how to adjust and cope with our new life together. After many years of struggling, we finally figured out how to make our marriage work. We were soul mates and enjoyed our last 15 years together. Forty-seven years together.
This series was a joy to read. Louanne Rice, has a way of highlighting universal struggles wrapped up in the mysticism of how love, courage and togetherness can see us through even the most painful and frightening of circumstances…leading us to keep believing in happiness and love.
The synopsis written about this book on the Good Reads app was not exactly accurate however I enjoy books by this author. To get the characters set in my mind I should have read more further at the beginning without stopping before putting the book down skipping a couple of days of reading and then going back to it.
Another wonderful book by Luanne Rice. I so enjoy her fluid writing style and rich character development.
Summer of Roses is part mystery, part thriller, part romance, and so heartwarming. It's also a beautiful travelogue for both Nova Scotia and Rhode Island. Enjoy this summer story in any season - whether in year or in life.
Barely a 3... easy read but a little confusing at first sorting characters and settings. Quite long-winded through the middle and still a little confusing. It all "came together so well" that it was really quite unbelievable.
I wish I could go higher but there was some misspelled words and sentences and also some of the endings of the sentence was not quoted right, the ending was good but not to my liking and not much action that I tend to follow. but 3 stars are better then 1.
Good book and moves at a good pace. I like reading light romance books at night to help me relax. The support character is a scientist in oceanography and that helps bring other interest to the story besides dealing with a battered spouse.
