About the author

Ferren Gipson is an art historian, writer, and artist based in London. She is the author of The Ultimate Art Museum and Women’s Work, hosts the Art Matters podcast, and is a doctoral researcher at SOAS, University of London.

Ferren is a researcher and advocate for art education. Her research areas include modern Chinese art history and topics exploring the crossover between pop culture and art. Her work can be found across mediums, including books, articles, interviews, and 68 episodes of the popular visual arts podcast Art Matters. Her first book is The Ultimate Art Museum (Phaidon), a museum-in-a-book for young readers. Her second book is Women’s Work (Frances Lincoln), which celebrates the stories of modern and contemporary women artists working in textiles and ceramics.

Within her art practice, she explores themes of labour, matrilineal connections, materiality, and colour.

Ferren has worked in the art and design sector since 2009, giving talks with wonderful brands and institutions, such as Tate and Esquire Magazine, and writing for the Financial Times and WePresent.

Through the lives and works of so many diverse artists across several hundred years, this book serves as a fantastic way to introduce children to the larger world of art. Moreover, the questions posed throughout invite them to interact with and think critically about what they are seeing, potentially inspiring the artist within themselves. All the stars!

One of my favorites for this month's theme in the Children's Books group, Art Appreciation.

Each artist gets one or two spreads. Many of works, and artists, are not the most familiar (though many are). They are in alphabetical order, so one isn't pushed to think that art gets 'better' through history. There is a pretty good diversity of representation.

Biographical information is very brief; emphasis is on the work(s) shown. Each mini-essay ends with a question for the reader, hoping to inspire some creativity or at least thoughtfulness. Included is a one spread summary and a 'want to know more' about each which basically only adds the materials and size.

"What scene from your life would you like to have painted? Who would you choose as the artist?"

Elizabeth "Catlett would print many copies on cheap paper so that her work could be shared with lots of people. Catlett believed that art should be inexpensive and available to many."

For Christo and Jeanne-Claude "the organizing is just as much a part of the art as the work itself." For *Surrounded Islands* "their crews removed 40 tons of garbage."

*Above the Clouds I* is Georgia O'Keeffe like I've never seen her. But in one sense it's not atypical, after all. Her 'headline' is "Seeing things from new angles can change how we think about them."

I lost my book dart so I don't know which painting this concept is associated with, or even for sure if it is this book, but in one piece the portrait is drawn as if we're looking up at the subject - which leads us to feel respect for her - an African-American woman, either an enslaved person or a sharecropper, iirc.

4.5 stars. This book talks about art through lenses of specific paintings of various artist throughout history. The delving into art is not chronological, so there is a nice selection of artist, recent or from past long ago alternating on every page, keeping things varied and unexpected. Notoriously well know artist switching with lesser known, modern art with classical. Showing children how incredibly interesting and inventive art can be, inviting them with thought provokig questions to think creatively about the endless possibilities of art.
The text accompaning the paintings explains the creative process, techniques, symbolic values and the meaning of particular artwork in an intriguing fun way that is informative and not overbearing.
This lovely book provide not just a great introduction into fascinating realm of art, but encourages young creative souls to express themselves. Highly recommended.

A pleasing and diverse collection of art and artists from a variety of times and places. Satisfyingly large pictures, interesting questions, and good basic facts to help readers of all ages both learn about and enjoy art a little more. A good gift!!
