Ernst Jünger

The son of a successful businessman and chemist, Jünger rebelled against an affluent upbringing and sought adventure in the Wandervogel, before running away to briefly serve in the French Foreign Legion, an illegal act. Because he escaped prosecution in Germany due to his father's efforts, Junger was able to enlist on the outbreak of war. A fearless leader who admired bravery above all else, he enthusiastically participated in actions in which his units were sometimes virtually annihilated. During an ill-fated German offensive in 1918 Junger's WW1 career ended with the last and most serious of his many woundings, and he was awarded the Pour le Mérite, a rare decoration for one of his rank.
Junger served in World War II as captain in the German Army. Assigned to an administrative position in Paris, he socialized with prominent artists of the day such as Picasso and Jean Cocteau. His early time in France is described in his diary Gärten und Straßen (1942, Gardens and Streets). He was also in charge of executing younger German soldiers who had deserted. In his book Un Allemand à Paris , the writer Gerhard Heller states that he had been interested in learning how a person reacts to death under such circumstances and had a morbid fascination for the subject.
Jünger appears on the fringes of the Stauffenberg bomb plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler (July 20, 1944). He was clearly an inspiration to anti-Nazi conservatives in the German Army, and while in Paris he was close to the old, mostly Prussian, officers who carried out the assassination attempt against Hitler. He was only peripherally involved in the events however, and in the aftermath suffered only dismissal from the army in the summer of 1944, rather than execution.
In the aftermath of WW2 he was treated with some suspicion as a closet Nazi. By the latter stages of the Cold War his unorthodox writings about the impact of materialism in modern society were widely seen as conservative rather than radical nationalist, and his philosophical works came to be highly regarded in mainstream German circles. Junger ended his extremely long life as a honoured establishment figure, although critics continued to charge him with the glorification of war as a transcending experience.

смешанные впечатления, но скорее положительные, чем нет. какие-то страницы пробегала глазами или даже перелистывала, но другие перечитывала несколько раз в изумлении и состоянии безграничного восторга. кто-то это подумал? кто-то нашел для этого слова и даже записал их?
вот например: "светлая радость — могучее оружие в руках человека; он несет его на себе, как божественные латы, и в них он способен противостоять даже страху уничтожения."

Юнґер це Юнґер: я його ніжно люблю, поважаю та вважаю актуальним для українського суспільства.
Ось цю книгу я б дала почитати людині, яка хоче познайомитися з автором, адже тут є все: і художка, і есеїстика; і класичні для Ернста теми, які є ледь не в кожному його творі, і ексклюзивні, які він розглядає лише в текстах із цієї збірки.
Я отримала рівно все те, що хотіла: порозмовляла з улюбленим автором, наробила багато закладок, щоб швидко повертатися до важливого, а головне — відпочила.
P. S. Без русні не обійшлося (майже як і завжди в есеїстиці Юнґера), але в деякій частині без цього не обійтися (роздуми про тогочасні режими тощо), тому в мене навіть не згоріло. Проте, як то кажуть, «навіть найрідніші свиню підкладають», тому кожна згадка різала, як по живому.

Numa abordagem única, que combina reflexões profundas e estilo literário refinado, torna suas obras uma contribuição significativa para a filosofia contemporânea e a literatura, incentivando os leitores a refletirem sobre suas próprias realidades e dilemas existenciais.
Ainda assim achei algo "desinteressantes" parte dos textos deste volume.

This was not an ideal place for me to begin with Jünger. Collections of short essays in a second language are always a challenge: you can miss a line or two of a novel and still be fine, but if there are only fifty lines or so total in a piece, each part is vital, and you have to go much slower. This is also a book from a difficult time in Jünger’s life to understand: having undermined the Weimar Republic through nationalist and frankly proto-fascist writings, he was now dodging and to some degree rejecting the Nazis, and his writings seem to deliberately avoid political clarifications. Probably they had to if he wanted to avoid exile or arrest, but that can make it all the harder to “read between the lines” to get at what he really wants to say. Some of the most memorable pieces here are about flowers and motherhood, which are hard to tie in to contemporary events without considerable imagination. Jünger was, at any rate, a gifted artistic thinker, and he sometimes seems able to find beauty where it is least likely, and to convey it with surprising effectiveness, but in order to understand him with any depth, I will have to look elsewhere.

For fans of Jünger this book is a great treat. A collection of fantasy pieces, vignettes, and observations. It shows the French influence on his writing, the more fantasy oriented pieces recall Contes Cruels of Villiers de L'Isle-Adam. However, Jünger's style, that of the daring soldier and the cold scientist are also noticeable. Jünger the entomologist seems to put the smallest thing under his intellectual microscope, finding meaning in the colors of nature, the behaviors of animals, and the behaviors of men and women at the store. However, the warrior of Storm of Steel is still present, saying that the experience of life is enhanced by the proximity to death and danger. Yet it is a colder Jünger, the Jünger of Eumeswil emerges in the Sicilian Letter to the Man in the Moon, stoic, removed, watching as fate shapes the world from a distance. Also, from the obvious attitude of being "above it all" and his sneering references to the symbolic "Mauritanians", this work should free the readers in the Anglo-sphere from the perception that Jünger was a fire-breathing Nazi . If he could be called a member of a faction (I believe he was too unique to be classified as belonging to any one movement), he could be called a Conservative Revolutionary like his good friend and philosophical mentor Ernst Hugo Fischer, who probably influenced the figure of the Nigromontanus we encounter in this work. This book gives a very good account of the nature of Jünger's personality and provides an excellent introduction to his later works such as The Glass Bees and Eumeswil. Also, I must give a huge amount of praise to the publishers and translators at Telos Press for bringing the long neglected works of Jünger to the attention of the English speaking world.

Космическое ощущение, когда в пределах трех дней ты читаешь очередной бестселлер про как писать хорошо и Эрнста Юнгера.
Юнгер поразительный. Хочется сравнить его с кем-то (интонационно — Селин, по мудрости — Манн), с чьим-то чужим текстом, с чужой речью, чтобы хоть как-то расчистить ему местечко в знакомой и упорядоченной системе ценностей, но нет.
Для того, чтобы писать хорошо, надо смотреть и видеть. Он видел все до мельчайшей детали, словно насквозь, словно с закрытыми глазами из реальности сна в реальность бодрствования.
Для того, чтобы писать хорошо, нужно интересоваться. Интересоваться каждой ничтожной мелочью, каждым движением, всем и всегда.
У Юнгера любое слово — живое. Он в ритме языка, в ритме речи, он восхищается этим, восхищается самим процессом "говорения".
И каждое происшествие, каждое сновидение, каждое действие оставляют в душе след, если совсем немного, совсем ненадолго дать этому задержаться в мыслях.
Не нужно никуда спешить. Мир во всем великолепии уже вокруг. Нужно увидеть.
Мне самым страшным и красивым показался очерк, пересказ которого состоял бы из "читал книгу, вышел на боле битвы, был ранен, в госпитале очнулся, дочитал книгу". Потому что самое прекрасное здесь не разгар боевых действий, а именно то самое состояние, когда ты прерываешься на ненужное (войну), чтобы вернуться к главному (книге).
Потому что в этом вообще все.

Drömsekvenser, filosofi och naturskildringar i en väldigt udda mix. Långa snåriga meningar - tyskarna förnekar sig inte! Lite osköna beskrivningar av kriget, men också oerhört vackra beskrivningar av natur som glöder och vibrerar. Udda.

This is the kind of book you have to set down and think about almost every other page. It really captured what I liked most about Jünger's writing style in his other books. It is also the most esoteric of his works that I've read, and is now one of my favorites of his. I left several small bookmarks behind as I read, because I foresee myself revisiting parts of this book someday.

Immagini vivide, che si alternano tra il mondo reale e quello del sogno, spaccati di vita e riflessioni analitiche di una profondità tanto impensabile quanto accessibile a tutti: questo è 'Il cuore avventuroso' di Ernst Jünger, una raccolta di scritti e pensieri pubblicata nel primo dopoguerra. Ciò che rende incredibile questo libro, che per gli amanti di Jünger rappresenterà una vera perla, è lo spirito di osservazione dell'autore, che ispira riflessioni su numerosi e svariati temi. Nei suoi pensieri si uniscono le figure del soldato delle Tempeste, dell'entomologo, del viaggiatore e del contemplatore. Fanno capolino, tra gli scritti, anche alcune delle leggendarie figure degli scritti più belli di Jünger, come il Forestaro e Nigromontanus: gli approfondimenti a loro dedicati arricchiscono il bagaglio culturale che le opere maggiori, come le Scogliere o Heliopolis, ci lasciano nella memoria.
Ciò che più mi ha stupito, però, è stata la grande concentrazione di scritti a tema onirico: in essi, Jünger si destreggia con naturalezza con visioni fantastiche, a tratti cupe e spaventose: le nere immagini riflettono fioche luci rosse al buio, mentre gli occhi del lettore si abituano pian piano ad osservare una realtà che, altrimenti, non sarebbe mai riuscito a vedere. Nella parte finale viene analizzato il sogno con occhio analitico, e si dà una spiegazione al perché le immagini oniriche sono tanto sfuggevoli alla nostra memoria.
Jünger racconta e spiega, attraverso la sua sensibilità, che si sostituisce a una lente d'ingrandimento, una grande varietà di fenomeni interni ed esterni, della realtà, dell'uomo in sé, della natura e dello spirito del tempo. Jünger diventa quindi l'osservatore che possiede le chiavi di lettura per comprendere appieno le motivazioni di tutto ciò che lo circonda: egli incarna appieno lo spirito del tempo.

Приступив к чтению, я не имел ни малейших предубеждений против автора. Вынужден констатировать: беда для читателя, когда писатель очень любит писать. Гораздо лучше, если писатель ненавидит пустые слова и снисходит до них только лишь когда вибрирует подлинным смыслом. Автор эстет-с? Что ж, литература знает и гораздо более эстетичные тексты. Здесь же пустота: пустая форма без содержания. За весь текст — 4–5 дельных мыслей. Самая красивая (одна из немногих и нерепрезентативная) цитата вынесена на обложку. Статья переводчика ситуации не исправила. Увы, книга с дизайном, претендующим на эстетичность (и на деле крайне непрактичным, — ибо шрифт чрезвычайно маленький даже для моего вполне хорошего зрения), предвещала большее, чем смогла deliver. Судя по всему, это неудачнейшая книга для знакомства с Эрнстом Юнгером (видел похожий отзыв и у другого рецензента); не знаю теперь, буду ли совершать иные попытки. Жаль. Если подытожить в трёх словах: книга вызвала раздражение.

really liked this book, despite not wanting to - disturbing to me how many rotten human beings I count among my favorite authors (Wallace Stevens, Heidegger, Faulkner, etc.)

Siempre perdiéndose en esos grandes pasillos de su conciencia, sin ningún reparo por encontrar la salida, pero siempre saliendo a saludar. Gran tarea, el respeto mutuo en la obra literaria. Jünger una de las grandes prosas del siglo pasado.
