Rate this book
A gentle, validating, and insightful guide to reparenting your wounded inner child and finding peace, healing, and wholeness as an adult.

If you experienced trauma as a child—including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; neglect; household dysfunction; or toxic stress—you may struggle with anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as an adult. Early childhood trauma can cause lasting effects, keeping you feeling stuck, lost, and unable to move forward. But you can heal the pain of the past and reclaim well-being in the present.

If you’re struggling with unresolved childhood trauma, reconnecting with your vulnerable inner child can unlock profound healing and set the stage for profound personal growth. Written by an expert in childhood trauma, this gentle guide presents an integrative approach that merges inner child work with self-compassion techniques to help you “reparent” the wounded aspects of yourself that were lost, frozen in time, or traumatized—so you can start moving toward the life you were meant to live.

A thoughtful and gentle guide to what is for most people a very painful topic. The author eschews empty platitudes and meaningless reassurances in favour of brutal but compassionate honesty, practical advice, and a soothing certainty that the reader can indeed take control of and rewrite their future.

I surprisingly really enjoyed this - it is a wonderful first step for someone who is becoming aware of their abusive childhood.

The beginning of the book lays out the framework and knowledge to fully comprehend topics that are later presented. I really appreciated the inclusion of basic beginner psychology terminology as well as relevant theories that are to be explored, opening the barriers of therapy to a new level. The breadth of knowledge is vast and the verbiage and direction is clear and concise, ensuring that the readers mind never goes off topic. The information presented is curated and relevant to the aforementioned topic and serves as a catch all for childhood trauma.

I honestly did not expect to learn something from this book, but there are things that therapy cannot teach and can be found in books like this. I highly recommend this book to anyone that may be on the cusp of admittance and needs an extra push to realize their healing is closer than they think.

Thank you to NetGalley for the arc <3

I highlighted a lot in the beginning of this book - I thought it was pretty helpful for explaining how trauma isn't always a big T trauma but can be neglect over time or emotional abuse.

I agree with the other reviewer who stated that when it veered into parts work it wasn't for her. Might be for other people, but for me, identifying the WICs (wounded inner children) wasn't something I was really interested in.

I also appreciated how short the book was, it was really digestable and succinct which is helpful when you are trying to work through things emotionally.

With thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!

REPARENTING YOUR INNER CHILD: Healing Unresolved Childhood Trauma and Reclaiming
Wholeness through Self-Compassion.
BY: NICOLE JOHNSON

We've all as humans experienced Childhood Trauma's to some extent which sometimes when not examined can affect us until we address them. Sometimes they are BIG T Traumas that we remember and sometimes LITTLE T Traumas that we don't remember, or consider them traumas since they're not recognized in the field of psychology. This book is very short but informative and I rated it five stars since the material covered is for everyone to choose to explore by self awareness, but with the Author's compassion to remind us that it's okay to not address them leaving the reader to decide for themselves.

I think that this recognizes that we need to evaluate the extent that they exist by bringing to this book a comprehensive list of the lesser noticed traumas, and if one or more resonates they are real if you felt it is. Even though the book is short it isn't something you've read and healing takes place. It requires deep introspection like any skill the more effort you spend the more easier it will be which we all know that change requires the willingness to put in time, energy and practice. I think it is going to require one to ask themselves how much do I notice traumas affecting me in adulthood that happened in childhood.

It requires reading a book about Internal Family Systems by which for anyone who has never been interested in psychology will benefit if they don't have a background during higher education if interested in this book. It offers hope to those who want to break through inner child wounds and the book claims that this at this time is the only self help book that equips you with the tools to reparent your inner child traumas. I just will repeat that this is a book that you read and your childhood traumas or subsequent older years that have experienced trauma will be healed by reading this, but it will take you to a starting point for gaining awareness which is easy to understand for everyone.

It is interesting to me to know more about this topic, but it won't fix them, but includes Chapter recaps to reinforce what key points are in what you just read which is a bonus. It requires a lot more time to answer the questions presented which are going to get my point that change requires awareness and this book will be a resource that will benefit those who are interested can go at a slow pace. We all have an inner child that depending on your key developmental milestones were tasks that you achieved or depending on your life experiences it's possible that the seven stages that all people experience were successful or stuck there. Overall, the main thing is it succeeds at bringing awareness that if you notice that you struggle in a specific pattern this is one modality of psychological problems that I was interested in reading about that I learned more about.

Of course, this concept of we all have inner children that we are going to benefit from bringing them into conscienceless and if inclined this is written for those who are beginning to look within. It is going to be helpful if you wish to approach this modality this is a easy introduction written in a warm and accessible to digest for those who wish to move at your own pace, which is valuable to some, but not one that is going to either interest you or not. It's very interesting and well written, but know that this is not a cure. I would recommend this to everyone since it is interesting, and was enjoyable, and everyone experiences trauma at some point in our lives. You never know how beneficial self development is a life long skill that is always positive towards all ages of life.

"Healing The Unhealed Self"

Written by a certified clinical trauma counselor Nicole Johnson – a member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies— Reparenting Your Inner Child sheds light on the most vulnerable parts of the self. By merging inner child work with reparenting therapy techniques, this book offers a fresh perspective on healing unhealed wounds and encourages the readers to engage in the healing process proactively.

Trauma & abuse are often strictly defined. Despite the limitation of these definitions, Nicole Johnson both extends and redefines the perception of trauma and abuse. Not limited to physical and sexual forms – commonly referred as Big T trauma – the author emphasizes that small T traumas, such as emotional and psychological wounds, can affect individuals just as deeply. The book begins by encouraging honesty about uncomfortable past experiences and provides step-by-step guidance along with worksheets for those ready to address and heal their emotional wounds.

Reparenting Your Inner Child presents a well-structured narrative, offering clarity and guidance as readers progress through each chapter. The author also openly advises seeking professional help when overwhelming emotions arise. Nicole’s admission reminds readers that some aspects of the healing process cannot be managed alone and may require expert support. What stands out the most is the summary of each chapter, containing concise takeaways and reflective questions that effectively capture the chapter’s key lessons.

Reparenting Your Inner Child invites deep contemplation, reminding that every healing journey is unique. The exercises are designed to be approached at one’s own pace, without pressure. It serves as a guide for those prepared to confront, accept, and nurture their unresolved feelings. Readers are advised to proceed with caution, as the content may trigger discomfort or painful memories.
Overall, Reparenting Your Inner Child is a highly insightful resource, especially for those interested in learning trauma-healing techniques through the inner child framework. It is a well-structured, concise, and accessible to anyone proactively seeking a new approach to overcoming trauma & abuse.

Thank you Nicole Johnson LPC MEd and New Harbinger Publication. I am sincerely appreciate the opportunity to read the e-ARC.

5/5⭐️

This book was absolutely phenomenal. Reparenting Your Inner Child goes deep, and I truly appreciated the clarity and depth it brought to defining complex emotional concepts. Each chapter focused on a key theme, which helped break things down in a really digestible and meaningful way.

What stood out most to me was how immersive and hands-on the book is. At the end of every chapter, there are reflective questions that encourage you to pause and actually do the work, not just read about it. There are also key takeaways summarized at the end of each section, which I found incredibly helpful in reinforcing the main points.

It was an easy book to read and follow, even with the weight of the subject matter. It definitely stirred up a lot of big feelings for me—some of which were hard to sit with—but they were the kinds of feelings that needed to come up in order to begin healing. Because of that emotional intensity, I did find myself needing to take breaks, but that doesn’t take away from how powerful and impactful the book is.

If you’re looking for a practical, compassionate, and deeply validating guide to reconnecting with and healing your inner child, I can’t recommend this book enough.

This book feels like being handed permission slips you didn’t know you needed: permission to heal, to feel, to finally choose yourself. It unpacks childhood wounds with compassion while also giving you tools to actually do the work- reflective prompts, clear explanations, and gentle nudges that make the process less overwhelming.

I was surprised by how accessible it was. Heavy subject matter, yes, but the writing kept it grounded and digestible. The mix of personal reflection and beginner-friendly psychology opened doors that therapy alone hadn’t cracked open for me. At times it stirred emotions I wanted to avoid, but those moments were exactly where the healing started.

What stood out most is the balance- both validating and practical. It reminded me that reparenting isn’t abstract theory; it’s about daily practice, showing up for yourself with the love and safety you always deserved.

This won’t fix everything overnight, but it’s a powerful first step. If you’ve been circling the idea of healing your inner child, this book might just be the push you didn’t realize you were waiting for. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in advance.

In Reparenting Your Inner Child, Nicole Johnson offers a compassionate and accessible guide to understanding the different types of childhood trauma, the coping mechanisms often developed in response, and the long-term impact on personality and behaviour.

The book is well-researched and grounded in both clinical experience and psychological theory. One of its greatest strengths lies in the many real-life case studies interwoven throughout each chapter. These examples highlight the diversity of individuals affected by childhood trauma, allowing readers to feel less alone in their experiences while also clearly demonstrating how the techniques presented can be applied in real life.

While I can’t yet speak to the effectiveness of the methods, as I haven’t had the chance to try them myself and I imagine results will vary from person to person, I found them to be clearly explained, with helpful examples throughout. I particularly appreciated that Johnson emphasises there is no one-size-fits-all approach; what works for one person may not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay. Her tone is gentle and reassuring, making the reader feel seen and heard.

I also really liked the short summaries at the end of each chapter: they’re a great way to reflect on the key points and takeaways.

All in all, a thoughtful and empowering book that many people would find both helpful and comforting.

Many thanks to NetGalley and New Harbinger Publications for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book has been such a surprise!

I didn't expect much from it, I was just curious as I had a growing focus on this subject.

What impressed me the most is the absolute clarity and the richness of resources provided: it takes you step by step, from the very beginning, on this journey of doing the work of reparenting yourself on your own. Providing various techniques, tools and covering even possible solutions to setbacks, while also providing examples for different situations. I am particularly impressed by the Pedro Pascal one, and how such a "fun", social media accepted thing, can reveal so much.

It also bears mentioning the compassion and the beautiful safe space created by the author, the level of understanding and empathy permeates all the pages.

I am grateful to have received this book in order to share my view on it, for me it has painted a complex and complete picture for starting this process.

As a mental health therapist, I’m always looking for resources to expand my practice or recommend to clients, and this book exceeded my expectations. Within the first 50 pages, I was already sharing its insights with clients. The information is presented clearly and effectively, without getting bogged down in overly technical explanations. I especially appreciate that the author offers free worksheets to accompany the material, making it practical and easy to apply.

One important note: I believe this book is best read with the support of a therapist or someone to process the material with. Some of the concepts can bring up strong emotions, so having a space to discuss them is vital.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to implement what I’ve learned into my sessions.

I‘m not sure how I feel about this book. It deals primarily with parts work, and parts theory always sits a little off for me (like it’s saying everyone has dissociative identity disorder). It’s a good workbook if you want to work on treating yourself with compassion and doing some serious work on addressing childhood wounds. I think it will be better for people with a few major wounds rather than really extensive childhood trauma. I personally felt absolutely overwhelmed at the thought of doing these exercises for all of my own experiences but I had really severe and ongoing abuse and traumas. The book is written compassionately and steps are laid out if you are ready to do the work.

I read a digital ARC of this book via netgalley.

This book does a good job being very clear about definitions and instructions. It also is very clear on the other resources that are available for support both to continue the process at self help and care journey or to reach out to professional support. I appreciate this approach significantly. each chapter has homework and summary. The wonderful concept that love can come from anywhere to help heal and you can give your inner child many different tools to recover and feel better this was very informative allowed you to self lead and choose tools most effective. I think the thing I adore most about this book is that it will really mean nothing unless you want to put the work in and are mindful about considering the work to make change.

This is an excellent book honing in on the process of reparenting the wounded inner child. Often this concept is raised in books regarding childhood trauma, but the specific action steps aren't shared, or aren't shared in detail or with a range of options, so I thought it was great that this book did so. I will return to the exercises in the future. I would highly recommend this book. I would only suggest it could be considered a little short, although this is more of a personal preference, as I thought it was very well written, and I could see how it is designed to be more practical than academic.

The ideas in this book are fine, and even interesting and helpful, but to me, it felt like it was written for an audience of 12 year olds. The first 2/3 of the book where the background is presented was so dumbed down it sounded almost silly. I have some familiarity with psychology and neuroscience, so I know that the ideas the author puts forth are based on scientific research, but the way they were presented made them hard to take seriously if you didn't already know that. I do think she has good points and that the exercises she recommends are useful tools - I just take issue with the way the book is written because I can see an average person with no psychology background picking this up and thinking it's dumb and not bothering to try out the methods.

„You deserve healing, freedom, relief, and hope. You deserve to receive all the love, support, and protection you may not have gotten as a child. You deserve to have a safe person who loves you unconditionally. And that person is meant to be you.“

I loved this book so much, it helped me understand some things. Everything was easy to understand and not complicated in any way. It really touched me, and i'm glad i found it. I can't wait to start the exercises.

„Emotions are not gender specific and you have a human right to feel all of them.“

Recommended to me by a psychologist for ideas about repairing one’s self image and attitude towards aging. If you are not happy with your current attitude and behavior towards your future, this book suggests a solution by looking at your childhood and memories of how you were raised.

Reading challenge category - 2025 Flourish and Blotts: Curse Breaker - Includes the breaking of a curse or a cycle

Thanks to #Netgalley for the ARC ebook of this work.

Nicole Johnson does a great job defining and describing the terminology for lay readers. I appreciate the inclusion of non-DSM descriptives for things like trauma, abuse, and neglect. So often, people, particularly women and other marginalized groups, feel like their truth and experience aren't valid. Be that from gaslighting or what have you. But, Johnson does a great job with comprehensive definitions with labels. The "work" at the end of each chapter was the only thing I found lacking.
