2.5? Pacing is odd, MC is sheltered and innocent and traumatized to the point that I was concerned when he started having sex with the love interest. Gorgeous art but this is the first Moscareto where I didn’t love it and the age and power gap was unpleasant and concerning. Adding that to his horrific past those long spicy sex scenes were upsetting. Includes child abandonment, child physical and emotional abuse, violence, creepy medical testing on children, child death, isolation, etc.
I already own the series from a huge sale (85% off) so I’m planning to finish. Had I been reading week to week at full price I would’ve dropped it.
This is an atypical omegaverse story and I am in love with the art style. I thought the story was set in a historical setting but it’s actually set in the modern world, it’s just that the characters are part of the royal family so they’re partly dressed in traditional clothes. Honestly I am obsessed with how clothes are drawn in this webtoon and I appreciate all the little details in the outfits.
Han Sangyul (MC) and Reok Lee (ML) have a tender and sweet romance even though RL has his suspicions about HSY, as he continues to work towards finding out the truth about his omega fiancé. Just like RL, I too think that HSY is adorable and naive, and I feel bad for everything that HSY had to go through. HSY’s innocence makes him endearing and a little pitiful and it was heartbreaking that he had never known love and happiness before he met RL. Due to his upbringing, all HSY knows is his purpose as a lab rat which explains his low self esteem when he’s around RL, as he feels unworthy of RL’s affection. But RL is so good and patient with him, never pushing or blaming him even though RL is at a position where he could. RL is truly a good person but he’s also pragmatic and fair. At the end of S1, there’s some character development as more of the truth is revealed but there’s still a lot left that requires both HSY and RL to be more honest.
The art in this series is stunning. Sue is a super talented illustrator. However, this is my least favourite Moscareto story. I usually read Moscareto for their humour and adorable couple dynamics, but this is a much more angsty hurt/comfort dynamic. Uncomfortably whumpy. Even though it's well written with good subversion of tropes and believable relationships and complications, it just didn't sit well with me.
The setting is really interesting, mixing together royalty tropes within a modern setting and then an omegaverse on top of that. Especially because the complications weren't specifically related to the characters being alphas/omegas/betas, but more about how the world perceives those people, it was a really interesting take on that trope. But ultimately, the different elements didn't quite mesh together and the pacing was a bit odd. There were too many unbelievable things going on.
The romance itself is very cinderella/fairytale-esque and honestly quite sophisticated with intertextuality with Romeo and Juliet as well. It's very much a prince and the pauper story, with all the uncomfortable power dynamics that that brings.
Overall, it's not that it's a bad story, just that it's not to my taste.
I wasn't prepared for the plot of this manhwa. for the first time I encountered an omegaverse in which those born as alphas are considered "below" the rest of society. For the first time I saw an honest, friendly and intelligent alpha, as well as using this intelligence for himself and to help others. a green flag isn't enough for this main character, I need a bunch of them! And by the way, relationships where communication and acceptance is mutual... is definitely sexy. Thank you dear author! oh and this art? I promise it will make you fall in love 👌
Anyway, the story wasn't all rainbows and love, but there were also dark parts, mostly about the uke's past where he was abused and experimented on. He was sold to this "medical facility" by his father and his step-brother was a piece of sh*t too, bcs he was thinking about selling him to vip clients and only for that the uke(20) was still a virgin when he met the Prince.
The Prince(23) was nice to him, and it's too bad we didn't see their kid(s) at the end of the story.
