This book is divided into two arcs. The first one sees Mia's attempt to stop her academy from falling apart, which not only introduces us to Ludwig's teacher, but also links back to Perujin nicely. It's nice to see how the side characters remain prominent in the story, instead of getting pushed to the sidelines once their role is over. While the narrator is still as snarky as ever, it is undeniable that Mia has grown a lot as a character. She might be shallow and petty, but she does care a lot for Tearmoon and its people. As this arc comes to a wrap, it opens up the path to more political intrigue since the academy problems were caused by the Greenmoons.
In the latter half of the book, Mia goes on a summer vacation with Esmeralda to an uninhabited island. It goes as well as you'd expect, since they get hit by a storm and end up trapped on the island. It's mostly a fun summer adventure that serves as a nice change of pace, but at the same time, Ludwig is also dealing with yet another political issue in Ganudos. Except this one involves the Yellowmoons as well, so we're slowly getting introduced to the Four Duke's families. I'm actually pretty impressed by how Mia seems to be just having fun, but the overarching plot never really stops moving.
Miabel's presence, on the other hand, does fade into the background in this volume. I guess it's inevitable since bringing her to see Esmeralda would complicate everything, so she's staying in Saint-Noel Academy and doesn't get much spotlight this time. The book ends with Mia still on the uninhabited island and Esmeralda lost in a cave, so it looks like the conclusion to this summer vacation arc is going to be in the next volume.
Also, the bonus short story actually fleshed out the court chef who fed Mia ambermoon tomatoes in the first book. At this rate, the supporting characters will need their own sheet. 😂
Lots of fun! A good addition to the series. Mia, Abel, Anne, Sion, and Esmeralda are all entertaining. I laughed a lot as usual, and the plot is thickening in a few different places. 4.5 stars.
(Japanese) Reread July 23rd-August 14th, 2022 This was a fun read. I read along with listening to the (fantastic!) audiobook, which made it easier to read extensively in Japanese. At any rate, this was an amusing installment in the series, which some interesting plot developments! Definitely recommended. 4 stars.
Jumped into volume 4 a little after 3 as i loved this series so far. How was the 4th volume? Um....it was a mixed bag.
Essentially the first half of the book was pretty entertaining. it was about nobody wanting to join Mia's new school and her having to convince this old guy to be her headmaster. that part was actually pretty endearing and fun. the problem i had was really with the second half. Essentially she goes on a cruise with her snobby friend Esmeralda and they get shipwrecked.
This...is where things got pretty dull. We had previously had Mia in the woods walking about in volume 2 and i didn't feel like it needed repeating in this volume. the worst part is, it doesn't even wrap up in this one as it's a cliffhanger that leads into volume 5.
Not really a huge fan of this story arc. However, that's not where the weirdest part lies. So essentially in the previous book they brought in her grandaughter from the future Bel. Basically as a surrogate to replace Mia's diary from the future that tells her what's going to happen so she can avoid them. However, the inclusion of Bel REALLY feels like the author realized that getting rid of the diary was a stupid idea and had to replace it with something. Because honestly, it doesn't feel like Bel really......DOES anything. She shows up a little bit, has a couple of flashbacks to the crappy future and talks a bit. 2 books worth of her, and honestly i forgot she was even in the story half the time as she doesn't really hang out with the main cast that much and is really treated as a plot device to show more scenes of the bad future.
I really think they should have just brought the diary back instead to be honest.
I will have to say that Mia is still her fun self and is still very funny, but it feels like the story in itself is having a lot less of those "Mia is amazing!" moments and those are some of the funniest moments in the series and i want more of those.
Everyone else in the cast is still fine. However, we ARE getting to the point where the cast is ballooning to the point where i'm starting to forget people's names.
All in all though, a fine addition, if not "Great". i'll give it a 3.5 out of 5 and round it up to a 4 because it DEFINITELY doesn't deserve a 3. wish i could 3.5 this though. still has the wit and charm, but lost the plot along the way.
More of the same, I guess. I don't know how this was originally published (it was some sort of web novel at first), but the transition to paper has been really awkward--there's been no narrative structure in either the last book or this one.
The first part of this novel is nothing; Mia's academy looks like it might be in trouble, but then Ludwig's teacher agrees to be its headmaster and I guess that solves everything. Great. In the second part, Mia goes on a pleasure cruise with her hideous classmate Esmeralda, and they all end up stranded on a deserted island. That situation remains unresolved by the end of the volume, but it's a step up from the first half--Mia's classmate is kind of funny, and Mia is openly useless in ways that I find more entertaining than the regular "she's useless but seems amazing" schitck. There's also some less comic sections where Ludwig and Dion try to unravel a conspiracy in Mia's absence; as a mystery lover, I liked those,
"In time, he came to know her better. She was indeed arrogant, but despite her grumbled protests, she always bent an ear to his counsel. She was indeed cowardly, but she did not flee, choosing instead to stay and struggle in hopes of restoring the empire. She was indeed a slow learner, but she endured his scathing remarks with teary resilience and a dogged, desperate effort to catch up"
I love Mia so much. And this is previous timeline Mia, she always had it in her.
I think this is my favorite volume so far! Mia has matured a lot and all her wild prepping is paying off. You can especially see this with her triggered flashbacks, before she kept going back to her imprisonment and death which scared her into action but now her memories focus on how she tried to help and on why her efforts failed, which guides her actions to prevent these issues in the first place. The way she focuses on problem solving and her genuine concern for others is a joy to witness.
My last review commented that the previous book felt like part 1. Well I must have remembered subconsciously that it WAS part 1!!! This continues the story, although a lot of it feels a tiny bit fillery, it does a great job of showing how Mia is starting to grow into the wise princess everyone thought she was. The next book will definitely continue as part 3.
There is something comforting about reading about a character who is selfish and whines, but does the job anyway. And is well recognized for it.
Oh, I've missed reading about Mia's adventures! The writing continues to be absolutely hilarious and genius in the way the misunderstandings stack up, and the characters continue to be such a delight to read about! There's two arcs in this volume and both are just perfection! The second arc (the cruise arc) isn't quite wrapped up, and we're technically left on a cliffhanger, but it was such a perfect way to end the book that it feels like the perfect place to end the volume! Absolutely loved reading this!
Wish it didn't go off on a tangent in the last 20% of the novel, which drops a star from the book. Another star dropped because this novel only sets things up and nothing is paid off. I will read book 5 because I really enjoy the characters, but I find this novel basically not having a complete arc inside of it frustrating.
Tearmoon is my favorite book series, all of its volumes are hilarious and I am glad to say this one keeps up the quality, I read the first three volumes in a binge so having to wait for this one to come out was pretty rough even if if it was worth it (T▽T)
Love the way how the flashbacks and foretelling works well with the present. And the remarks from the author to her character(s) is still an adorable experience (for a reader like me).
Can't wait to reread this after I'm done with the rest of its future volumes.
A romping good volume with Mia battling F.A.T., cruising the seas, and showing her passion for mushrooms (a bit too much it seems). Oh, and plots and intrigues galore.
More good character development, jumps around a lot towards the end though (mostly a me problem wanting to finish the whole thing therefore getting stuck in side stories)
