Josh Wunderkind is 10 years old. His life hadn't been super until a few days ago when a glob of neon green bird poop lands on him. And he was excited about it! A couple of months ago, Grandpa Wunderkind shared a family secret with his older brother Jake, twin sister Madison and him about how every Wunderkind that had ever lived had been born with an extraordinary ability. His grandpa was born with the ability to read cow's thoughts.
Josh was bummed because his brother and sister already knew their abilities and he didn't know his yet. One day, they were playing baseball when the bird poop landed on him. He wasn't excited about it at that time and started running around screaming, which led him to Max, the baby of the raptor who pooped on Josh and had died. It doesn't take too long for Josh to learn about his extraordinary ability.
Josh and his brother, Jake, sister, Madison, and friends MacKenzie and Justin, decide to start investigating strange happenings in the neighborhood and that's when they come up with the name Gumshoe News Crew. They have super training and start right in on a current neighborhood mystery.
This book was fun! I wasn't familiar with the word "gumshoe" so it was fun to learn what that means and how they came up with it. Their training boot camp was fun. I enjoyed the humor in this book. It starts with learning that a glob of neon green bird poop landed on Josh (I've had bird poop land on me before and there was nothing fun about it for me). This book is fast paced and easy to understand which makes it perfect for young readers. There are simple illustrations which are fun to look at.
I read this book with my kids. It was fun to read together and got a thumbs up from all of us. We spread it out over a few days and looked forward to finding out what was going to happen next. When we were done reading it, my son asked for more!

This is a fast-paced early chapter book with a great gang of kids and a pseudo-parrot (you’ll have to read it to find out what that means!). Josh, his brother Jake and sister Madison have superpowers – but Josh’s are rather more dramatically revealed (and more powerful) than theirs. There’s plenty of goo involved, that’s all I’ll reveal.
They join forces with some friends to right some wrongs, a venture which involves maps, ingenuity, commonsense, technology and duct tape. It also involves some Robin Hood-like conclusions.
Altogether it was a fun read with lovely touches, great and believable characters, and plenty of jelly beans. Should be plenty more fun on the way with the Gumshoe News Crew!
Bonus points for the super illustrations!

Ten year-old Josh Wunderkind, the second oldest of the four Wunkerkind children (along with twin sis, Madison) has been feeling left out. Both his older brother Jake and his twin sister Madison have been endowed with super-human powers. Madison can communicate with her Guardian Angel who frequently looks out for her, and Jake can read the thoughts of animals who dwell in the ocean. But things change for Josh when some neon green bird pop hits him in the eye, awakening his extraordinary ability, namely superhuman senses that allow him to see things, hear things, and do things that no other human possibly could.
Banding together with their friends MacKenzie and Justin, the three Wunderkind children form the super-investigative news team, The Gumshoe News Crew. After under-going some training in order to hone their skills as investigators, the crew attempts to solve their first real mystery: where is Isabelle Wunderkind’s (the youngest Wunderkind child) favorite blanket? The new team must work together to solve the crime and return their little sister’s blanket (along with other missing items) to their rightful owners.
Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew: The Super Secret is the fifth book in the Wunderkind series by Melissa Perry Moraja. We have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Madison and GA: The Tale of the Slimy Spitball and Madison and GA: The Tale of the Messed Up Talent Show and we loved both of those books. Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew was an absolute hoot to read and I really appreciated how it featured a combination of characters (the Wunderkind children) who vary in age and gender. I like this combination of children and feel that most elementary school child will be able to relate to one character or another in the story. They are each unique and special in their own way – an important underlying message in the book. While the story is told from Josh’s perspective, I thought the collection of characters (Josh, Jake, Madison, Justin, and MacKenzie) worked very well for this story. Even Max the bird was a great addition to the story!
While the two Madison and GA books we read previously featured Madison dealing with real life issues that a middle school girl would likely encounter, this book seemed more about fun and adventure with a sprinkle of silliness. Any book that starts with the main character stating that everything in his life changed after he was hit in the face by some neon green bird poop, you just know is going to grab children’s attention and this one left my children begging me not to stop reading night after night. I can safely report to you that both of my children were absolutely engaged with the story and were frequently laughing out loud as I read the story.
As always, I must comment on the illustrations. There are simple black and white illustrations in every chapter (roughly 1 per chapter) usually featuring one or more of the children along with quirky one-liners. I think they are a great addition to the book (especially with my “picture-hungry” children). Love them!

Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew is a fun adventure told from the perspective of Madison Wunderkind’s (Madison and GA) twin brother Josh whose extraordinary gift is awakened when he is hit in the face with a glob of green neon bird poop. Together with his older brother Jake, his sister Madison and two friends, the “Gumshoe News Crew”, an investigative news team dedicated to solving mysteries in their community, is formed and this is where the fun begins. This story features a great cast of characters and a hilarious plot which sees the newly formed team go through training and finally solve their first mystery. All of the Wunderkind Family books are great fun and I highly recommend them as read-aloud stories for children ages 6 to 12, especially if you have a wide range of ages to accommodate.

Josh Wunderkind is just an ordinary kid, but his brother Jake and sister Madison have managed to carry on the Wunderkind family tradition and exhibit amazing abilities. Josh is about to give up all hope at finding his power when a giant bird attacks hits him with glowing green bird poop. Strange things begin to happen and the only explanation seems to lie within the unusual bird poop and leaving him with the responsibility for caring for a baby bird named Max. Can Josh learn to master his abilities, help the group, known as The Gumshoe News Crew, fight crime in their town? And what's the *super Secret*? Only way to find out is by *reading*, *Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew “The Super Secret”*.
For me when I read this book,starting from the fifth book in the series, it was a easy read and to follow through from beginning to end. It didn't matter, like some where you start from the middle not completely realizing until something comes up that was explained a previous novel, not this, the author did a good job following through with her characters, plot, overall story line. Through the book there are quaint but fun illustrations which are always fun to see. The story overall, is self-contained, characters well developed, and easy to follow.
Being said, this is a fun book perfectly geared for middle grade readers and generally young reader. The reader gets a chance to know each of the characters well, their fears and hopes, while still be led through an adventurous and humorous tale. The The Gumshoe News Crew, kids, are full of life and simply entertaining to read about.
With unpredictable twists and turns, you will never be bored with these group of kids. You'll just may want to read the rest in the series. I know I do.

Josh is just an ordinary kid who does ordinary things with his friends and siblings. When he accidently gets super powers he is not sure what is happening. He also at least at first does not have much control over them either. His brother Jake concocts a training exercise to help him and friends.
As the story unfolds, his super powers come in handy as he leads four other kids through the training and subsequently a adventure to re-obtain stolen items from his baby sister, Mom, and neighbors. The thief is not at all who one would think as a thief.
Josh does learn to work together with his team and that all of them have something to offer and that super powers are not always useful or needed. The book winds up with the creation of the "gumshoe news crew" who will no doubt have more adventures and crime seeking explorations in subsequent books.

The book was a fairly easy read so the youngest of new readers will not have much difficulty. The older reader will love the humor throughout and should be able to read the book with ease.
My only disappointment was that the book left me hanging and wanting more.

Intended for a slightly younger audience than my usual books, this story was a super-quick read. Charming and witty, it moved swiftly, narrated by the slightly hapless Josh, who is happy to finally find his super power, but is pretty worried about messing things up, and with some reason. The tone and humor are perfect for the target audience, and were enough to keep this alleged adult turning pages too.
I really had only two complaints about Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew: for one, the role of the baby bird in the story is sufficiently unreal that it needs to be very clear that there is a lot of magical stuff going on there. He learns to fly in a single, 5-minute lesson? The author is careful to be sure the readers know that in the ordinary way of things, touching a wild animal or baby chick is a very bad idea, however, which is good. My second complaint is that the ending was rather sudden. The story hints at a further mystery they will need to solve--but we are apparently to be left to figure that one out in the next book. No fair!
Recommendation:
This looks like a great series for readers making the transition from easy-reader books to more advanced chapter books.

Ms. Moraja leads the reader on a series of adventures in which the reader will learn about accepting themselves for who they are and turning to others when you need help. Readers will be led on an exciting adventure as Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew learn how to control their powers and solve mysteries. I love to read YA literature, and Josh and The Gumshoe News Crew was great! It was easy to read, understand and would be very easy to turn into a great series :) Josh is just a boy until he finds out that he has special powers or the "Wunderkind". He has no idea what it means, until he rescues a bird and decides to bring it home and names it Max. Max becomes his "sidekick" and all of Josh's friends decide to begin training themselves to become private investigators. I found this book very funny and cute, I think it it something that most kids would love! I am 38 and loved it :) The kids are not just simple characters, we find that they are very intelligent and able to take care of themselves in most situations. I love the way the author humanizes Max the Bird - he becomes an integral part of the story and saves Josh on more than one occasion! I cannot wait until the next story about the Gumshoe News Crew comes out :)

Firstly, Yay to the length and Yay to the cute illustrations scattered throughout the book! At 154 pages, this is perfect even for reluctant readers. And the pictures are an added bonus. Yes, even those kids who aren't 'reluctant' love something to look at occasionally.
That said, this is a fun book perfectly geared for middle grade readers. The characters are sympathetic and realistic. We get a chance to know them well, their fears and hopes, while still be led through an adventurous and humorous tale. I especially enjoyed the dialogue--very realistic and spunky! These kids are full of life and simply entertaining to read about.
The plot itself has unpredictable twists and turns, and definitely remains at the middle grade level. I enjoyed watching the characters work through their problems and find solutions, while dealing with a baby bird (quite the bird!) and all the other nonsense. When I picked up this book, I did not know it was the fifth book in the series. That being said, it didn't matter. The story is self-contained, characters well developed, and easy to follow.
I couldn't help but think about how kids tried to get spider bites after Spiderman came out for special powers... when people finish this book, there might be a few messes to clean up. ;)
This is a super fun story, that hits the marks in terms of content, humor, adventure, and spunk. The illustrations were fun and simple... there's not much I can tell you, except go and buy it. You and your kids will LOVE it! 5 stars
I couldn't help but think about how kids tried to get spider bites after Spiderman came out for special powers... when people finish this book, there might be a few messes to clean up. ;)

Josh Wunderkind is not sure he will follow in the rest of his family's foot steps and have extraordinary powers but that all changes with a baseball game, a bird and it's neon green poop. Josh and his siblings will then join forces with school friends and form a sleuth news crew to help the neighbourhood. It is a great chapter book to start for readers beginning to dive in to chapter books and it was engaging for my son and it captured his interest.

The target audience is children ages 6-12 years old. I can definitely see the appeal for middle schoolers with this title.
