I was received a review copy of this book, but it in no way compromises my integrity in reviewing this book. There are a few initial caveats. I LOVE murder mysteries, having read and re-read many British Murder Mysteries since I was old enough to check books out of my local library. Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, and Sherlock Holmes are a few of my personal heroes. Having said that I HATE the supernatural trend infecting murder mysteries nowadays, so when I read the cover blurb: I was not impressed. However, after reading the first few pages the immediate vibe was Stephen King’s the Dead Zone and I LOVE me some horror. Mash horror with mystery and we just might have something special.
Jeff Resnick is just an ordinary guy with some darkness in his past. We all go through things that can really seem like the valley of the shadows of death and I found myself relating to Resnick. He gets mugged in the beginning of the book and experiences severe head trauma that causes what he believes to be illusions, but they are in fact visions of someone being murdered. At a certain point he feels pushed and compelled to determine who is the murderer and could he in fact be placing his family in danger by investigating.
This is a smartly written, quick read that is packed with an emotional punch and stimulating story. I have never read this writer, but I would read her again. She wrote this story in a first-person male perspective, but I believe she nailed the characterization and some key story beats. Not a perfect story, but very close. You get 4 and a half stars for going beyond expectations.

I received a free download of "Murder on the Mind" (Jeff Resnick Mystery, #1) by L.L. Bartlett through midlist. This was a very enjoyable mystery thriller with elements of the paranormal. This is also the first novel I have read by this author.
Jeffrey's luck was about to change, he had won some money at pool at a local pub in New York, and was about to start at a new job in the morning at a entry level claims position. But on his way home Jeff was mugged, and beaten to a pulp, where he lost consciousness. In the hospital he suffered from a bruised brain, broken limbs and nightmares. But now, still unemployed and trying to recover from his injuries while living in Buffalo, New York with his filthy rich half brother, he finds he has the ability to solve crimes through visions and feelings that come to him and uncontrollable. Jeff's brother, Richard, becomes a somewhat unwilling helper in solving crimes because Jeff cannot drive yet due to his injuries and Jeff is totally broke.
In this first of the Jeff Resnick books the visions that come to him are of a dead and slaughtered deer which he does not understand at all until another vision turns the deer into a man that Jeff met as a child and who has now been killed in a horrendous way. As Jeff witnessed the murder, he is determined to find the killer at all costs and bring that person to justice.
The characters in this novel are well-written, engaging and very real. A most enjoyable read , and this novel will appeal to a lot of readers.

We follow the adventures of Jeff, a man with family troubles, no wealth without a job who gets mugged on top of all this trouble. As a result of the mugging, he lands in the hospital and is offered to go to a quiet(er) state by his millionaire (surprise!) brother.
Jeff discovers that he has psychic "insights" into a murder and begins investigating it.
From the literary point of view, the book is weak. The family troubles of Jeff, as well as his romance and all the rest seemed undeveloped and bland to me. His psychic power appeared to me as a cheap instrument used by the writer to get the plot moving on. Perhaps, because the psychic power that Jeff has was so poorly described and wasn't really exciting. It allows Jeff to "cheat" through many parts of the investigation that are otherwise tense, exciting build-ups in a detective book.
A positive note is that the book doesn't drag on for too long, it is relatively short and can be read on a plane trip in pretty much one go.

I picked this up through iBooks when I was trolling for free downloadable mysteries. I get these by the dozen but rarely get past through the first few pages before realizing that there was a very good reason they were free. And after a few hackneyed phrases early on I was about to zap this book back to internet oblivion. But something about the breezy style and the lead character kept me reading. As the writing evened out I found myself really enjoying the story and the Buffalo setting. I ended up reading the whole book in one night. If I had read the story description and realized that the book was about an investigator who had suddenly gained some psychic abilities I would have never selected it. But the way the abilities are used are fun and basically just help the plot move on. If you are like me and you like to balance out your reading list with some light fun reads then I would suggest you check this out. I have even bought the second book in the series.

What I enjoyed most about this compelling book was the premise of a man being brutally mugged and hospitalized, who afterwards discovers he now possesses a sixth sense. Though troubled by his visions and the physical sensations of violent acts and fearful emotions, he realizes he has the ability to bring murders to justice, thanks in part to his 14 years as an insurance investigator.
The book is well written and the pace moves along nicely. I will definitely check out the other books in the series.

Not certain if I will continue on to the second book, but the first was a bargain. The story has a lot of layers along with improbabilities, but once invested in the fate of a young man who was brutally mugged the reader must follow on to discover what happens next. His reunion with older brother, a doctor who cares for him when needed, sets the foundation for family support that will enrich both men. The injured brother gains extrasensory perception through his brain injury and uses that ability to solve a murder giving unwanted help to the police.

I thought this was a very enjoyable light mystery/thriller. Jeff Resnik, a 30-something laid-off insurance investigator, was due to start a new job when he was viciously mugged and left with a broken arm and brain trauma, the latter of which seems to have given him psychic abilities. Unable to start his new job and broke, he goes to live with his estranged and wealthy older brother. Plagued by visions of the recent murder of a bank executive he met as a boy, he and his skeptical but supportive brother set out to follow up on the pieces of information about the murder that keep coming to Jeff in bits and pieces, ultimately endangering both of their lives.
The characters in this book were interesting to me. Jeff is resentful of his older brother for reasons that appear gradually in the book, and upon occasion he seems to regress to the sullen teenager he used to be, which sometimes left me rolling my eyes at his childish outbursts. He struggles accepting and learning to deal with his new abilities while using them to solve a heinous crime. It will be interesting to see how his character develops in the next book in this series.

This is a new author for me and the novel is a very different murder mystery with an interesting premise that really works.
Well written with gritty characters you want to learn more about, the reader is taken on a journey of discovery by a down on his luck insurance investigator who has received a brain injury from a vicious mugging and awakens to find he has gained psychic insights.
The novel is tightly paced and running alongside the protagonist's need to find a killer is the backstory concerning his estrangement from his wealthy half brother and the added mystery of a certain elderly baker.
An interesting, enjoyable read and one that has peaked my interest in reading the rest of the series.

I don't know why it is that women are so good at writing murder mysteries, but here's another example. It's fast-paced, intriguing and entertaining, without bogging down in police procedures or getting so convoluted that you feel you ought to be drawing flowcharts or a timeline. I got the Kindle edition when it was free, but it's still cheap, as a lead-in to the normally priced rest of the series.
But I have to say this upfront: the author has been quite devious in designing her protagonist's setup. After a mugging leaves him with apparent brain damage, he discovers that he gets visions of murder. This is quite cute, because whenever the action slows up or a trail leads to a dead-end, he can suddenly have one of his visions and away we go again. It's a bit like one of those naff mediums: "Wait, I'm getting something... I see a maroon Buick..." And the hero's half-brother is fortuitously rich and unemployed and amiably prepared to drive him all over town.
But if you can get past the inherent implausibilities, this is a terrific page-turner. The main characters are all very believable and likeable, too. The denouement is a bit over-dramatic, but never mind. Overall, this is a good yarn at a good price.

Jeff's brother, Richard, becomes a somewhat unwilling helper in solving crimes because Jeff cannot drive yet due to his injuries and Jeff is totally broke.

Jeff Resnick is my favorite reluctant hero. He is mugged, badly beaten, on his way home one night and ends up moving to Buffalo with his successful half-brother. He he begins dreaming of violence and soon discovers that his dreams, and feelings, are in fact reality...an ability he doesn't want. Being the man that he is, Jeff uses his knowledge to investigate a brutal murder and works to solve the case before yet another murder occurs.
He is such a strong character who brings a such a wealth of emotion that wanting to read the next book is inevitable. It's hard to describe the range of feelings that one experiences while following his uncomfortable relationship with his half-brother to the budding relationship with a woman he meets in the course of his investigation to his conversations with the old lady in the bakery Jeff becomes becomes a man that one should definitely have the opportunity to meet.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants a good solid mystery with a very memorable protag.

A hot button trope for me: a psychic crime solver, but seldom does a book really satisfy that itch. This one didn't fully, but this story of Jeff Resnick's damage at the hands of muggers and just life did keep me reading until the end. The beginning is slow, and pacing remains a problem throughout, with extraneous detail belabored, and key facts just casually mentioned. (Hey, I don't usually have the patience to actually BE a detective; I like the author to produce an experience for me. :)) I found Jeff whiny, annoying and selfish most of the time (which is a problem since he is the narrator), but the book suggests that's a symptom of his recent brain injury and could improve as the series goes on. His brother Richard, Rich's girlfriend Brenda, and Jeff's new friend Maggie are all appealing. There's a lot of potential in this book, even though it didn't grab me, I'll probably check out the next in the series.

If this is a NYTs Bestseller then the world of literature has reached a new low. I know this book was written four years ago but there is no excuse for such pablum in print. The main character is a pathetic, boring person acts like a 13 year snot. The only mystery in this book is about any reader who doesn’t figure who did it by page 30.

I forget who recommended Bookbub to me but I ended up signing up and grabbing free Kindle books if they sounded remotely interesting. I snagged this copy based on the premise and didn't really delve much deeper. Now, I see that it's part of a series and was originally published in 2008 (despite my regular reading-series-out-of-order luck, this happened to be the first book!).

Resnick is a former insurance investigator who has been unemployed for a good long while. When we meet him, he's about to start a new job and get his life back. Unfortunately, a couple of crackhead kids changes his plans. He's mugged and beaten over the head with a baseball bat. While in a coma as a John Doe, the kids ransack his apartment and steal everything of value and deface the rest. Assholes. Resnick's half brother, Richard, comes to the rescue to take Jeff back to Buffalo to recover. Their relationship is tumultuous at best. Richard was left millions in inheritance while Jeff has nothing. Richard is a doctor while Jeff struggled to stay employed as an investigator. Yin Meet Yang.
Richard's girlfriend, Brenda, is a nurse and welcomes Jeff with open arms. Jeff starts having visions, where he sees a murder happen and feels the horror and emotion of the crime. Could this be a symptom of the brain injury? Maybe, but it turns out, the visions are real. A prominent banker in town is found gutted like a deer, strung up in his garage, exactly like Jeff's vision.
Compelled to investigate, we pretty much dive in to a crime of passion and greed that would have gone unsolved if not for Resnick. Since this is the first book, we learn what he is learning about his new gift at the same time. I'm pretty curious to see where he goes from here and what he can do without a broken arm and brain injury.
