Phoenix (2024)

Phoenix, Vol. 1: Orbital Resonance

Rate this book
Founding X-Man Jean Grey once again units with the power of the immortal entity, the Phoenix, and takes to the stars in this cosmic solo epic!

She is Jean Grey, one of the most iconic X-Men. She is Phoenix, the nigh-omnipotent cosmic entity of pure power. She fights for life. She brings death. One woman, alone in space, who not only must do what no one else can: She yearns to. And when a desperate S.O.S. from Nova brings the Phoenix to the edge of a black hole where hundreds of souls hang in the balance, Jean is dedicated to protecting innocents. But whatever she does — or fails to do — will bring darkness to the universe and haunt her in ways she can scarcely imagine! Plus: You’d think that with all of outer space as her playground, Jean would be safe from family dropping by without warning — but when your father-in-law is Corsair of the Starjammers, anything can happen!

This book is a bit all over the place. I would have given this 2.5 stars but deserved a round up. There is nothing bad about this book. It is just okay. My dissapointmen it I wanted it to be much better.

Jean Grey is the Phoenix again, or was she always the Phoenix? Was it destiny or choice? This volume does not give a definite answer, I am hoping that comes later. They do not even go why or how she became the Phoenix. However, she is Phoenix. Now, she has chosen to make amends across the universe. Is Jean really in control, and does the universe even want her or the Phoenix's help?

I do like the questions posed by this book, with a mortal having unlimited power, but my question with everything going on with the X-MEN and Earth at the moment why did Jean not start there? I am really hoping for more answers as the series goes on. The book finishes with a varient covers gallery.

Been awhile since we’ve seen the full force of what the Phoenix can do in the comics. It’s nice to have her out in space where she doesn’t always have to hold back. But seeing the struggle to keep control over a power so volatile makes for a good story even if it’s the only one they use for her. This volume all felt like build up so I’m excited for the next set of issues so we can see what the actual plan is here.

This is what Jean Grey should be doing in the Marvel Universe. Love Stephanie Phillips’ writing too.

When you have the Phoenix sigil and firebird tattooed on your arm, your dedication to Jean Grey and her abilities as the Phoenix are pretty strong. AND you are guaranteed to read a solo title written about her. So in addition to making my way through the "From the Ashes" storyline, I read this GN due to my love for the character.
Fresh out of her re-integration with the Phoenix Force during the Fall of X event, Jean has left Earth behind and gone to help the galaxy and its residents. Unfortunately, many cultures and peoples still have a negative image of the Phoenix, whether from the "Dark Phoenix" times, or just as a primal force. Jean means to change that. Interacting with such characters as Corsair (her father-in-law who is always in need of help), the Black Order (shut down their abduction of slave workers), Gorr the God Butcher (after "killing" her and giving her a chance to talk to Eternity, she comes back stronger and converts Gorr into a life-giving sun), and the Galactic Council definitely gives Jean plenty to do. Next up: Thanos.
LOL good luck tyrant. Jean will make you into dust.

Strong recommend. But don't stay away from Earth too long. Scott will always need you.

I'm on the record as liking all the goofy space stuff that the X-Men get up to, so this new Phoenix series is right up my alley. Jean Grey, now apparently on good terms with the Phoenix, is far off in space (for somewhat unexplained reasons), having little one-and-done adventures starring some of your favorite space goofballs (hello, Nova and Corsair).

The abrupt nature of these tales makes them sorta hard to attach yourself to, but they're fun nonetheless. There is a bigger picture threat running through the background, an old foe of Thor who has used the God Quarry to turn some battered alien teenager into a god.

Solid stuff overall, especially some dramatic scenes towards the end . There's none of that White Room nonsense you'd expect to see in a Phoenix storyline, just a mutant adrift with great cosmic powers and a nose for doing good. Curious to see where this goes!

Last year I tried out several of the “From The Ashes” X-books, and this was the one I liked more than I expected to. I might have gone further, but I set a goal to not buy any new super-hero comics in 2025. (That Issue #5 really came out in November 2024. That’s just the way Marvel dates their books).

At first I wondered why the new series would base Phoenix in space, but it makes total sense. She is a hero of cosmic/epic proportions and the new settings allow her to explore her powers to the fullest (and she does).

Phillips also explores the character and make-up of Jean Grey to the fullest, exploiting that dichotomy between what she yearns to do (protect innocents throughout the galaxy) and the dangerous elements of her often uncontrollable power (that has the ability to cause mass destruction). How does a mortal handle unlimited power?

The consequences of her epic actions can be seen through the eyes of new character Adani, as her planet is spared destruction by a dying sun through the intervention of Phoenix. Then, Phoenix has to travel to the site of an intergalactic prison within a black hole. The black hole is collapsing, and Phoenix has to choose between stabilizing the black hole (which may afford some prisoners a method of escape) or allowing it to implode and destroy a vast section of space. One of the escapees is the Dark God Perrikus, who crash lands on the same planet Phoenix rescued, and then kills the father of Adani. Perrikus twists Adani to his purpose, turning her against Phoenix.

There’s a lot that happens within the first five issues, including brief team-ups with Nova and Corsair of the space pirate Starjammers. She also has a heart-felt conversation with Captain Marvel learning how to balance responsibility and power, and is invited to become part of Creation by Eternity. There’s also the Black Armada, a fight with Gorr the God Butcher, and a meeting of the Galactic Council where Gladiator warns of an alleged Phoenix threat. Plus, Thanos shows up at the end of Issue #5.

Good stuff, with some neat art. More deserving of THREE AND ONE-HALF STARS.

Summary:

Krakoa has fallen. While many mutants and heroes are trying to find their new place in the world, Jean Grey is looking outward. Literally. She’s headed into the cosmos, hoping that she can make a difference in the larger universe.

This isn’t just something Jean wants to do; it’s something she needs to do. She needs to be alone in space to get a new grip on her life and find peace with who she is. More importantly, she needs to test her limits.

Review:

Of course, Jean Grey is getting a solo series during Marvel’s From the Ashes. It would be strange if she didn’t, right? Phoenix Vol. 1 really lets Jean/Phoenix off the leash, sending her off into the larger universe, and boy, are the stakes high.

Marvel had to throw some cosmic-level threats at Jean for Phoenix Vol. 1 to make sense. As such, fans of the Black Order, Thanos, and Gorr should probably make note of this series. Just to see what their favorite villains are up to.

Honestly, a lot is going on in Phoenix Vol. 1. While the faster pace is appreciated, it sometimes feels like there’s too much going on. This is why I couldn’t rate it any higher. Newer X-Men fans are going to have a lot of trouble diving in and understanding the story from here. It isn’t impossible, but there are a lot of references and relevant backstories that only get briefly touched upon.

I do love that Jean has been allowed to head out on her own and just…exist. She has her powers, and she’s confident in herself, and honestly, that should always be enough. I don’t know how long the series will run, but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Highlights:
Jean Grey as the Phoenix
From the Ashes
Marvel Cameos (Starjammers, Gorr, Nova)

She is fire and life incarnate! She is Phoenix! And she is...going to outer space!

When I heard 'Jean Grey Solo Series', I didn't have many thoughts. However, I am glad I picked up this first volume of Phoenix, because it's great. Jean heads out among the stars to try and right some wrongs and make up for the atrocities that the Phoenix has committed in the past, running into some familiar faces from across the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe along the way, including Corsair, the Black Order, Gorr, and Gladiator.

It's fun to see Jean at the height of her powers, not worrying that she's going to blow everyone to pieces or get a headache when things are inconvenient. Letting her reach her full potential allows her to stand on this galactic stage, and opens her up to some neat storytelling moments. Stephanie Phillips clearly has a larger plan in mind for Jean, and I'm excited to see where it's going to go.

Alessandro Miracolo's artwork does the job and does it well - the fire effects during the fight scenes are beautiful, and even though there are a lot of scenes set in space, he never seems to skimp out on backgrounds, which I always appreciate.

She is fire and life incarnate! She is Phoenix! And she...has my attention.

I read the first and second volume in this series back-to-back, really fast. They do read quickly (the second volume clocks even even shorter than the first, from like 128 to 112 pages).

I thought this was fine -- I feel like I've read a LOT of stories centering Jean Grey or giving her a major spotlight in the last three or so years. She's fairly compelling, and her connection to other characters (Cyclops and Wolverine, mainly) gives her some personal dramatic stakes. That's all mostly stripped away in this series so far. By focusing on her basically functioning as another Captain Marvel-like galaxy protector, the stakes are so big that they almost cease to matter. I also found it incredibly odd that this initial arc seems DEEPLY parallel to Thor: Love and Thunder, from including Gorr and Eternity to basically having the exact same plot beats as Jean attempts to find balance within herself. I wish it had been more overt, potentially, to really strike a chord of difference that felt meaningful. I'd be really curious how the setup with Thanos being the bad guy pays off in the next issue but...I've already read it and

(3.5 stars) Logging this here, but I’m including both of the first two collected volumes of this series (I think there will be a third?). The first thing I want to say is that the artwork is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in a comic book. The Phoenix effects are stunning. Sprawling images of space and fire - wow. Ok moving on. This was confusing, I won’t lie. I think I prefer Marvel comics on a street level. Whenever I read a comic that takes place in space among the many invented Marvel aliens and gods and entities I get wildly disoriented. They (Marvel writers) get carried away with that stuff. So I decided to just focus on Jean, and she did not disappoint. She’s just so badass. I never get sick of seeing her kick ass. I pretty much tuned out all the other cosmic space shit. I hated Adani as a character - why is she a co-narrator? Stick to Jean please. Hoping the third volume is better, but overall I liked this. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.

When this book was announced I expected a quickly cancelled book, especially when half of the From the Ashes books were axed at 10 issues. Jean Grey in her own series and set in space? Meh. But this wasn't half bad. Jean is still a bit flat as a character. I did like how she's going around saving stars and the like instead of consuming them when she was Dark Phoenix, fully empracing her powers in a positive way. The stories are a bit quick.

Miracolo's art is interesting. There's a distinct lack of backgrounds but it's well hidden by having most of this in space where it can be filled with stars and comets so it doesn't feel like everyone is just floating in a void.

Kind of a mixed bag. There's no real through-line to this, other than Jean Grey trying to redeem the Phoenix force. Lot's of Marvel's galactic characters show up--Gorr, Perrikus, Captain Marvel, the Galactic Council, even Thanos--all concerned that things haven't really changed and the Phoenix is a threat to all life. Perrikus swears he'll take care of it, but Thanos must be placed in charge of the Galactic Council. Seems like a fair trade...not. Good artwork in this, though the story is a bit repetitive at this point, each issue featuring a different foe for Jean/Phoenix to fight. Hopefully, this gets better.

Cosmic Marvel has been hit-and-miss in recent years, and while I think Phoenix is a very fitting character to be featured in a galactic-spanning story, this one feels by-the-books in many ways. Phoenix wants to protect everyone, but in the process some NPCs get butthurt when Phoenix doesn't end up saving them specifically, leading to a string of issues where Phoenix is dealing with cosmic-threats but there's one character with a vendetta chasing after her. There's nothing new that's being said about Phoenix really, though I'm glad she's treated with more respect than in the past, but I found myself growing especially bored by the end of the volume.

I am absolutely here for various X-Men getting their own titles. Avengers have been getting them for years.... However, when you've got a character that's ultimately powerful, nothing comes across as a challenge. I also hoped Jean going solo in space would mean more introspection but alas, it's guest stars every issue. Since when are Jean Grey and Carol Danvers close?

This title feels a little too much like Captain Marvel in tone and story line to totally work for me. X-Men space adventures have historically been messier than this, full of bad romantic choices and questionable ethical decisions in the weirder corners of the Marvel Universe. This series, so far, is just a scootch too vanilla for me.

The writing is okay. But I really feel this series is let down by the art, I think a better choice really would have uplifted this series.

I am avid Jean/Phoenix fan ever since the 90s and I have hoped for a full fledged Jean/Phoenix solo book for a long time.

I look forward to the direct they take Jean.

And clearly Marvel and gearing up Wanda and Jean for something.

Like most modern comics, it is a VERY, very fast read.

What works:
-I just love Jean
-And I love seeing Jean do cool Phoenix shit
-The art is gorgeous
-It's clearly building to something with the dual narration

What doesn't:
-Jean needs a supporting cast
-Comics read like tweets these days
-That's not a Phoenix specific issue, but an entire monthly floppy can be read in 5 minutes

Jean tries to make up for Dark Phoenix by healing suns and saving lives. But when Eternity invites her to join the cosmic abstracts, what will she do? Additionally, Gorr the God Butcher is out for blood.

Meanwhile, the dark gods are manipulating a young girl named Adani who holds a grudge against Phoenix.

I didn't think I could enjoy a story about the Phoenix as I've never really enjoyed Jean Grey as a character. This was good though! A cosmic being trying to repair its horrific past choices and build a better universe while finding a place in it. I like it.

Amazing return for the one and only Jean Grey.....

Every single thing about the story was top notch. This is the Phoenix that we should have gotten from the jump. Stephanie Phillips knocked it out the park.
