I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This book will be out on August 19, 2014.

THE CHARACTERS:

Thrand:

Thrand is a mercenary. He is also known as Thrand the Destroyer. A hero scarred by his past. Years ago, his parents were killed by Hagal the Red. Until now, he blames himself. If it weren’t for his desires for a woman named Ingrid, he would have been with his parents and he would’ve helped protect them.

It is because of his parents’ deaths that he has sworn his life to finding vengeance for them and killing Hagal the Red.

Thrand is not the destroyer he is known to be. He’s big and badass in battle but he has a soft spot for Cwen. Also, he is just a man longing for forgiveness and wanting a new start for himself by having his own family and living far, far away from all the chaos.

Cwen:

Cwen is the sister of the Lord of Lingwold. A Northumbrian lady who considers herself cursed. A woman cursed her and she blamed the following events on her life on this curse. Her older husband Aefirth died from a wound which became infected. Then, their infant son followed. Because of this, Cwen believes she is cursed.

What I like about Cwen is that she is no spoiled, weak heroine like most of what we find in historical romance novels. Cwen has backbone and even when a bunch of warriors bet against her, she proved them wrong.

MY REVIEW:

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." -Thrand Ammundson

Things started by Cwen travelling to be married to Hagal the Red. The marriage contract includes that Hagal will bring Cwen’s brother the head of Thrand the Destroyer who was known for conducting all the raids in Cwen’s brother’s lands. But Cwen took a walk and that was when their caravan was attacked by Hagal’s men.

Cwen luckily escaped and that was when she ran into Thrand. Thrand wanted to use Cwen as a witness to tell the King everything so that Hagal will be put to justice. He declares Cwen under his protection and brings her with him in his journey.

Reading Thrand’s story felt really different from reading Ash’s story in Saved by the Viking Warrior. Ash’s story called out to me more and there was just so much excitement there! Thrand’s story started out slow for me and I didn’t feel the passion between the hero and heroine right away unlike the fire between Ash and Cara that almost consumed me right away. The plot picked up at the latter middle part and that was when the excitement started to kick-in. That excitement lasted until the end. But as for Return of the Viking Warrior, the excitement started in the very first page and never ebbed.

What I did like about Saved by the Viking Warrior that was different from Ash and Cara’s story was Cwen’s personality. She wanted to be strong and she wanted a new life for herself. She keeps on saying that she is different from the other Northumbrian ladies that Thrand knew. Cwen’s personality is refreshing because it’s different. Heroines in historical romance are usually not like this and I loved reading something for a change.

And about Thrand, I liked his character. But I didn’t really feel as though there was something that made him stand out. His this Viking mercenary with a scarred past. That was it and I didn’t feel as if there was anything more that would really make him a memorable hero. The only thing I’ll remember about him is that he’s one that wanted to leave the past and the fighting behind to start a new life with his family.

As for the settings and the writing, I have no complaints here. Every time I read a novel by Michelle Styles, I am pulled back into time and inside the world where hot Vikings existed. Through her writing, it feels like I’m really there.

To Ms. Styles, congratulations on another excellent novel! Overall, I am giving this one 3.5 stars. It’s still an enjoyable read and maybe it’s just my personal preference but Return of the Viking Warrior captivated my heart much more. Until now, it refuses to let go.

To Ms. Styles, congratulations on another excellent novel! And as always, I will be waiting for more from you! Thank you for this and I hope you get more inspiration to do more of what you love and what we love reading. :)

Cwen is rescued by Thrand, rumoured to be a Viking berserker. But the rumours aren’t true. Hagal, his long-time enemy has done evil and blamed it on Thrand, including murdering the entire party escorting Hagal’s would be wife, Cwen. She alone survived the massacre.

Thrand seeks only revenge for the murder of his parents, but Cwen slowly warms his frozen heart.

I would have liked this book more if our H/h had been upfront about their feelings.

A good build-up and slow burn to the final chapters. The smut was good. But the story was sometimes confusing although I will blame this on French translation.

This book was ok. I had a hard time really getting into the story line but when I did, it was ok. There was lots of action, but it lacked substance. Pretty predictable ending.

Saved by The Viking Warrior by Michelle Styles
I read few books published by Mills and Boon in England or elsewhere because I do not enjoy detailed descriptions of how the hero and heroine make love.
However, there are a few Mills and Boon authors some of whose romantic historicals I read. Amongst them are Michelle Styles’ novels set in the Viking era.
I enjoyed Saved by The Viking Warrior about which Michelle Styles explained: “Part of the problem with writing this book was that the primary documentation source is not very good for Northumbria in the ninth century. It is a mixture of legend and fact. Sometimes the facts masquerade as legends and sometimes it is the other way around.”
I enjoyed the historical background in Saved by The Viking as much as I enjoyed the story of “Battle-scarred Thrand the Destroyer who has only one thing on his mind, settling old scores.”
Thrand captures Cwen, an Anglo Saxon lady trained to obedience by her family and late husband, who grieves for the loss of her young son.
Thrand and Cwen must overcome many obstacles while their true characters emerge and they fall in love.
All in all, The Viking Warrior is an enjoyable, light read.

A solid 3.5 stars.

I really liked the heroine Cwen . Loved how she wanted to stand on her own two feet and her progression from weak Northumbrian lady to feisty heroine works really well.

I wasn't quite so keen on the hero Thrand. He's not bad but he's not as interesting as some of the heroes in these types of story. His progression from hardened warrior to family man isn't quite as natural as Cwen's transition and seems a tiny bit far-fetched.

Adored the setting and it's very well realised. I also liked the story. My only issue is the ending felt a teeny bit rushed . Hagel's demise was over too soon and I wanted to see more of Thrand strutting his stuff and proving to us how great a warrior he is.

Other than that I really can't fault this one. A strong heroine who finally gets her hunky Viking hero. Thumbs up - Michelle Styles you've done it again.
