Fae Unbound #2

Queen of the Fae

A month after she freed the fae, all Lizbet wants is for things to go back to normal. In addition to sporting a brand new set of useless wings, she has to cope with mood swings, headaches, and an ancient fae queen who wants to steal her boyfriend. Could things get any less normal than that?

The answer is yes: things can get a *lot* less normal than that.

Throw in some controlling gnomes, a little brother who feels left out, plus a fae-worshipping ex-monk next door, and things can get crazy-less-than-normal fast. As Lizbet and her friends learn to use and control their magical powers, will they have what it takes to face down a new threat?

Jill Nojack

Jill Nojack is a writer, musician and artist. She has rarely managed to make a living from the pursuit of her creative endeavors. Instead, she is a corporate drone who stays up late to indulge her passions. This passion paid off in 2015 when her book The Familiar: Book One in the Bad Tom Series was selected by readers for publication on Kindle Press through the Kindle Scout award program.

Ms. Nojack has cred. Way back in the long ago, she romped through a degree in English. She followed it up with a Master’s degree in Sociology. During her time at University she served on the staff of the school’s literary magazine. She eventually stepped in to the editor’s role.

When she isn’t exploring her creative side, Jill enjoys laughing too loud and long in public and talking about herself in third person. She resides in the great American Midwest with a long-suffering cat.

It was just okay. Kind of drawn out and boring compared to the first book. There wasn't really anything catchy about it.
Also, Lizbet kept thinking she would not worry her mother by telling her, and then she would tell her anyway. Not that she shouldn't tell her mom, it just seems a little wishy-washy. I didn't really care about any of the characters. The girls were both a bit frivolous, and a lot boy crazy. And the boys were just meh.

For my clean readers:
No language, very little violence, and only some non-descriptive kissing.

Wasn't sure where this series could go after the first book, because it felt kind of finished. But, wow! The author has a wild imagination and brought in a lot of the smaller characters into this story to make an original, suspenseful story.

Basically, now that the Fae have been freed, LIzbet has a lot of problems because she feels guilty about some of the Fae being kind of a pain and also because a lot of people don't accept the Fae or the half-Fae people. And the Fae side of Morgan Le Fae is also trying to take her over. AND, the gnomes create some trouble for her little brother. So, lots going on. And then it gets all tied up fantastically in a really surprising way until the author drops in a loose thread at the very end. (Hint: if you hate loose threads, don't read the epilogue.)

So now, I just have to wait for the next one :-)

This series continues from Magic Unbound, with Lizbet, now sporting wings (hope that’s not a spoiler alert) and your friends from the first book's jaunt into Scotland. Prominent is everyone’s favorite garden gnome Eamon (although he’s actually a gruagach) who has some good lines in this book full of great dialog, one of Jill Nojack’s strengths as a writer.

There are gnomes.

Gnomes, according to Eamon, are stupid and, ‘magic and stupid is quite a bad combination’.

The story is not all fun and games, however, and takes a slightly darker turn than the first, which I personally liked.

For Arthurian buffs and fans of this kind of lit, there’s plenty of background. For the rest of us, fun facts: e.g. gnomes are flatulent.

I did not know that.

I also liked the clever chapter titles.

This story is very much along the same line as the first in the series. Both are easy reading, teen focused, urban fantasy - though urban in this case is suburban Ohio. This story line is weaker than the first as so many second novels in a series are and for the same reasons. Since we already know the character we don't get the intense pace for a ramp up, instead we just sort of move along. I have already bought the third but need some time before I jump into it. Read it if you love the genera - but if you read only a couple books a year then you probably want to choose something else.

Great story with twists and unexpected plots. Also good discussion of prejudice and addressing issues logically and not jumping to conclusions.
