Letty Duquesne Thriller #2
Unnatural Intent
“Unnatural Intent is like Michael Crichton's State of Fear meets Michael Connelly's The Rapture of the Deep.” –Cam Torrens, award-winning author of Stable and False Summit
The last one they sent didn't come back.
Disease ecologist Letty Duquesne is barely settled in to her new job when a colleague goes missing in the field. When Letty lands in Alaska's Katmai National Park to take over the investigation, she finds a violent welcome and the case in shambles. No record of the last scientist's work exists. His footsteps at the incident site disappear into nothing. And the polar bears Letty has been sent to find are hunting for human prey a thousand miles from the pack ice where they belong.
If Letty can't figure out why, more people will die. An unimaginable threat lurks under the icy waters of the Arctic, animals stalk the people of a tiny seaside village, and the greatest danger waits where Letty least expects it.

Unnatural Intent by Brooke L French is a thriller that kept my pulse racing. From the first chapter where we meet killer polar bears to the end when we wonder if Letty will make it through the book alive, Brook had me hooked.
Letty is a field researcher which makes her as much a sleuth as a scientist. She also seems to ignore potential hazards and often finds herself on the wrong side of safety. I found myself both willing her to make it through any given scrape and yelling at her to make wiser decisions!
As a complete science nerd, I loved the science portion of this story. What happens if climate change does more than heat up the earth's surface? What if it changes animals and how they behave? What if new organisms evolve, and these organisms are deadly? What if these changes don't just happen to animals but also affect entire populations? And what is there is someone out there who doesn't want anyone to know about it?
If you like a book that you just can't put down, but one in which you have to put it down to catch your breath, then this is the book for you.

Premise is Good, but…
Solving the mystery of the polar bear migration, changes, and attacks was solid as was the impact of ingested fish entering a food chain as was frozen arctic toxic waters beneath the ice…but the murder mystery back story became a distracting and unnecessary second plot with no real benefit to the story. The last quarter of the book is a slow push of jump the sharks…

Unnatural Intent by Brooke French is an excellent scientific thriller in the style of Michael Crichton and Robin Cook. I enjoyed this story with a number of unexpected plot twists.
The majority of the story is set in northern Alaska. It starts out with three men fly fishing in a remote river where they are attacked by two polar bears in an area not associated with polar bears. A foundation that investigates ecological incidents around the world sends a person to investigate the polar bear attack and the description of the actions of what appear to be diseased bears. He goes missing a couple of days after arriving. Another investigator is sent to coordinate with the police and game wardens and hopefully locate the first investigator.
One of the bears is killed after showing up at another cabin even farther from the bear’s normal range. Based on a GPS tracker attached to the bear, they were able to determine original location of the bear when tagged. The investigator travels to this site on the Bering Sea to determine what might have caused the bear’s actions.
While this is ongoing, the head of the foundation is in Washington D.C. meeting with senators trying to get legislation that would designate the foundation to coordinate and investigate ecological incidents. The founder is also the CEO of an oil firm that he inherited from his father. These other activities become part of the story line, but I will l not describe them here, because they have an impact on the on the various plot twists that occur in the novel.
If you like scientific thrillers similar to those of Michael Crichton and Robin Cook, you should take a look at this novel. This is the second book I have read by Brooke French and both are very excellent scientific thrillers.

What a compelling continuation of Letty’s story!! Unnatural Intent is the third thriller I’ve read by Brooke French (I’m a fan) and it does not disappoint! The author has an incredible way of turning clever descriptions and/or slick turns of phrase into fabulous insights about place and character. And what great characters!! Especially Letty. I GENUINELY like her. Letty is brave. Letty has integrity. Letty is kind and considerate of others. But I also really like how flawed Letty is, and how wounded from the tough life she has lived so far, yet also strong from having survived it—which enables her to confront the challenges at hand. And the book is chock-full of them! The story races along until the ending, which is wonderful and the payoff totally satisfying. The Arctic setting is mysterious and intriguing all by itself, and the sense of urgency is both real and realistic. I kept thinking about our own world and totally believing that something devastating like this could happen—even as I was fascinated by French’s descriptions of the harsh landscape and her excellent research. I love books that teach me about the world while simultaneously entertaining me. Learning becomes effortless, and I feel like what might have otherwise been classified as escapism or a guilty pleasure (which are still valuable in my opinion) ends up being so much more.

A daring female scientist, a frozen tundra, family secrets, an environmental crisis makes for an exciting read in Brooke French’s new thriller novel, Unnatural Intent.
Letty Duquesne is relentless in her pursuit of the cause of strange animal behavior in Northern Alaska. She has been hired by her brother-in-law, the head of the environmental foundation and the newest CEO of an oil company drilling in the Artic. Conflict of interest? Add to that a hidden past relationship between the two and a nosy aunt who seems to know everything that’s going on.
Letty’s curious but impetuous personality leads to misunderstandings and errors but also important discoveries. Increasingly alarming threats don’t stop her from pursuing the truth about what happened to fishermen and a colleague, but who can she actually trust? The handsome photographer? Her team? The locals? Her own suspicions?
Looking for a story you can’t put down, but scares your chilly insides? Here is a great read that explores our own insecurities and doubts and unwanted desires while addressing our growing concern about what’s happening to our environment. You won’t want to put it down and you won’t want to play in the snow again!

From the first swipe of a polar bear’s paw, I was in. French caught me like a seasoned fly fisherman in her powerful opening scene. The release wouldn’t be until four nights later but only because I had to work during the day. Damn!
Unnatural Intent rallies a raft of entertaining characters: Gemma (extraordinary admin and my fav minor character!), calming Aunt Kath, sticky-wicket board members, a really cute National Geo photog, Adam, quagmired Mark—what the heck is exactly going on between Letty and Mark?—and Jimmy, the godfather, (and I admit to some magical thinking that he will save the day) kept me turning the pages. But I’m betting it will be French’s craft that keeps your attention, plus a heroine who looks “like she’d snowballed through a rummage sale, picking up random layers of fleece and Gore-Tex as she rolled.” Humor is the hardest thing in a drama-filled narrative, that and weaving otherwise dry scientific data so it intrigues, not bores. But in this fast-paced reality-based tale, Ms. French has nailed it, serving up an incredibly clever plot that keeps you guessing. Well done, Ms. French. Can’t wait to see Letty’s next move.

Unnatural Intent by Brooke L French is a powerful thriller as a standalone and if you love it (no doubt) then you will be glad to know it is part of a series! We all love a belter of a new series so here we go!

Scarily plausible.
The science, certainly. As a fictional thriller, of course there are going to be some less-than-likely events and characters. Nevertheless, this was an absorbing ride, starting with a shocking prologue and continuing at pace, with twists and turns, scandals and betrayals, and a running thread of how both affirming and destructive love can be. And all the while, the sense of impending environmental disaster about to unleash on the planet.
Letty is a likeable MC, driven to do what she thinks is right and making mistakes - both understandable and illogical - along the way.
I enjoyed the science, which was well-explained, and how Sallow Bay and the Arctic environment was brought to life through descriptions of Letty’s work, and the human and animal residents of the area.
I hadn’t read the first book in the series, and didn’t feel I missed anything. And I’d like to know what Letty has next on her plate, so bring on book 3.
I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

In her latest thriller, Unnatural Intent, Brooke L. French marries ecological crises, corporate malfeasance and family loyalty. It is the second book in her Letty Duquesne series.
In it Letty, a top scientist, flies to remote Alaska to try to understand a world gone amuck where polar bears displaced from their habitat are claiming human victims. Her grit and determination push her forward in this dangerous undertaking even after she is pursued by human adversaries who will do anything to stop her.
Her boss, CEO of an oil company and head of the foundation where Letty works, struggles with his own ambitions and ethics under the scrutiny of a congressional committee. As the tension builds he is forced to confront political maneuvers that threaten to undo him and the foundation he oversees.
All the threads of the story are expertly woven together in a tense climax and a surprising finish. Smart, relevant, and hair raising, this is a piece of work you don’t want to miss.

This book hits all the notes that a good thriller should. There's plenty of downtime to get to know the characters, lots of great details and careful worldbuilding.
The twists and reveals are well-spaced. Without spoilers, several of the developments surprised me, someone who is very aware of tropes and genre convention.
There's a lot of real life science in here, and that was one aspect that did slow me down at times. Seeing where real science and fictional science meet is a fun game for some readers, but I'm not one of them.
But the characters and plot are great regardless. The science is decently explained, but doesn't get in the way of the narrative.
If you haven't read the first book, this may lose something. There's a subplot running through both stories about Letty's personal life. But the first book is also good, so why not start with that?

A riveting tale of environmental mystery set against the stunning backdrop of the southeastern Alaskan wilderness and the barren Arctic Ocean ice floes.
As scientist Letty Duquesne delves into the peculiar behavior of animals in the region, while simultaneously searching for clues to explain a colleague’s disappearance, she uncovers a snarl of intrigue that hints at a potential global crisis.
French masterfully weaves the urgency of a fast-paced plot with detailed descriptions of the Arctic landscape, immersing readers in a world where every clue brings Letty closer to unraveling the truth. Like a Jurassic Park that could actually happen, “Unnatural Intent” is a suspense-laden, environmental thriller readers don’t want to miss!

An excellent follow up!
Unnatural Intent, book 2 in the Letty Duquesne series, takes place in the months after the events of 'Inhuman Acts', when a researcher for the JDF goes missing while investigating an unprecedented Polar Bear attack in Alaska that draws Petty there. What she finds is nothing like she expected and dangers she is unaware of abound. The writing is, again, of the highest order, with remarkable insight into the thought processes and feelings of the primary characters. The descriptions of the arctic are stark and clear, producing clear imagery. I wasn't sure the sequel could BA as good as the first book, but I was pleasantly surprised! 5/5 stars! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys an immaculately crafted thriller!

"You couldn't test to see if the ice was thick enough to land safely… without landing." (per Letty Duquesne, protagonist)
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. UNNATURAL INTENT is a pulse-pounding, environmentally confounding adventure-thriller with a determined, resourceful female disease ecologist as a protagonist and a cadre of other memorable players. Great research, realistic technical accoutrements, and a frighteningly real scenario. There are scenes in here set in the Arctic that put readers on the edges of their seats and keep them there. Polar bears, dismembered scientists and dinoflagellates, oh my.

Unnatural Intent is the second book starring disease ecologist Letty Duquesne. It takes place in Alaska and begins with Letty investigating a fatal polar bear attack. She has been assigned this case after the original investigator disappears. The story picks up after the events in the first book, Inhuman Acts, but can certainly be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed this book and was fascinated by the science. The author has clearly done her research. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

A colleauge goes missing, and when Letty arrives in Alaska to look for him, more trouble insues. Meanwhile, Mark, her late sister's fiancé, faces hearings on his company's possible bad business practices. Overworked and frantic, Letty deals with polar bears preying on humans. (a delightfully terrifying scene awaits your reading pleasure) guilt and grief over her sister's death, and then an incredible betrayal. Still, she emotionally limps on trying to solve a possible murder and stop an environmental disaster littl realizing the next victim could be her.

The story bogged down in places but it soon got going again. Letty is carrying a bit too much personal baggage and needs to lighten up and appreciate that she is part of an organisation doing some good. She also needs to start realising she should not go out alone sometimes. A blood red tide has been a thread in several cases and is not usually linked to anything sinister but it is used to good effect in this case to explain erratic animal behaviour. Good story and characters.

3.5 Most of the time the story was brisk and engaging. Letty’s musings and blame game with herself became tiresome. The first part with the polar bear attacks and research held my interest. The author left some loose ends..carrying over into book three or just gave up? Because of that, I will not read the prior book or the one after. I doubt you will become bored reading this, but you might wish Letty would “grow up.”

Hard to put down!
I really enjoyed this book, which is the first I have read by the author. I got sucked into the story quickly and had a hard time stopping when I needed to. Very intriguing story, interesting plot line, and an ending I didn’t see coming that didn’t just drop off after the climax. I highly recommend giving it a read.

The blurb compared this to Michael Crichton. It is a novel. It has sci-fi elements. Mostly though, it's low-key romance, a smattering of outdoor action, board-room tension, sporadic violence, an easy-to-guess villain (two, actually), and I suppose a set up for more of the series. I won't be reading any more of it.

What an amazing read. First time reading from this author and I am certainly a fan. Great writing, intense storyline and entertaining throughout. Action around every corner that I didn't want to put the book down. Brooke French you have found a new reader fan in me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a high intense thriller with outstanding characters. This is one of those book that you CAN NOT judge by it's cover! 5 STAR read inside and out!

Field research has never been so riveting—and potentially deadly. UNNATURAL INTENT is a tense combination of scientific detective work and corporate intrigue, set within the brutal but starkly beautiful landscape of the Arctic, where man is no longer an apex predator.

Absolutely outstanding once again. Full of suspense and secrets that will keep you reading through to the end. Danger everywhere under the ice. How will this all turn out, who will survive. Can’t wait to read more by this talented author.

I stayed awake all night following Letty Duquesne, young woman scientist/detective, trudge through the ominous Arctic searching for a missing colleague, tracking displaced bears, sidestepping disaster again and again. This is a real page-turner. I couldn't put it down.

Not for me.
At 21%, I'd had more than enough profanity. I paged through to reach the review page. This could have been an interesting story with less scientific information. I advocate for research, but too much takes away from the story.

The intense beginning held my attention, but when the story seemed to turn into an environmental, political story, I lost interest.
Otherwise, the author wrote a well-developed story with relatable characters sure to please readers of Crime Action, Medical Thrillers, and Women’s Thriller Fiction.

Unnatural Intent
What is unnatural is the flippant use of the names of deity as profane expression, as well as throwing f-bombs around like they were candy. Not what I want to read.
